On this episode of The Writing Life, we speak to news journalist turned non-fiction writer and biographer Richard Balls about interviewing difficult subjects. Richard is the author of three books: A Furious Devotion: The Life of Shane MacGowan; Be Stiff: The Stiff Records Story, and Sex & Drugs & Rock 'n' Roll: The Life of Ian Dury. In this conversation with Steph McKenna, he talks about using the experience and techniques acquired through a 20-year journalism career to inform the way he approaches, interviews, and writes about high-profile figures such as Shane MacGowan, whose life story is as much fiction as fact! How do you secure an interview with a reluctant subject? What do you do when an interview isn't going to plan? And what ethics or responsibilities are involved when writing about someone's complex, contradictory, or unacceptable behaviour? Richard covers all this and more on the podcast.

What a packed episode this proved to be with my fascinating guest Dr Liliya Wheatcraft. Liliya is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatry and tells us of her struggles with her diagnosis and coming to terms with her autism and ADHD. She shares her family life (with all members being neurodivergent) and how she fought to get accommodations for her children, especially within educational settings. Liliya also shares her own challenges as a ‘chubby' child, then anorexic adult, and how she was not understood by those in important clinical roles within the NHS. We talk about medication, including some fascinating insights into genes, and about the quality of life of autistic folk who struggle far more than others. I found Dr Wheatcraft insightful, thought provoking and inspiring, and her talk was full of important learnings. Apologies for the clicking sound which can be heard in this episode.

In today’s episode, I sat down with Stormii Knights and Tamika Archie of NuVysion Media Group to discuss their latest production and why they are passionate about sharing stories that address difficult topics. “Behind Closed Doors” touches on a myriad of taboo subjects, from domestic violence to human trafficking. We talk about the struggles they faced in putting together a production team from scratch and what it was like filming scenes that re-enacted similar episodes that had happened to them. In today’s show, we dig into the mental health aspects of retelling these stories and how we can navigate our own self-care as storytellers. We also discuss the difficulty of creating a film that caters to both victims who have lived through abuse, as well as those who have not suffered abuse and for them to be able to relate to the tragedy on screen. Thaddeus Russell is notorious. He is unafraid to think or speak about the things that college professors aren't supposed to think or speak about, and is leading a revolution in having thoughtful conversations about off-limit subjects across the US. This is a colossal project that is becoming more necessary with each passing day. Among his growing list of contributions to the world are being a father, Ph. D. of US history, notable author, founder of Renegade Univeristy, and host of Unregistered with Thaddeus Russell. I urge you to investigate all of his public works as they are truly thought provoking. The key transferrable lessons for your journey of independence that I hope were imparted in this episode revolve around the art of thinking clearly; identifying and challenging deeply embedded assumptions; considering culture, humanity and personal wounds and goals when dealing with others; and having conversations about difficult subjects aka forcing yourself to have that akward conversation - something I impart on ALL of my proteges from day 1. If this episode makes you uncomfortable, good... it was supposed to. What are you doing to make yourself uncomfortable and overcome it today? Enjoy.http://www.thaddeusrussell.com
