A Girl Scout troop in St. Louis County made bracelets to raise funds for child war victims in Gaza. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri told them to stop — or face legal action. The troop's co-leaders, and one of the scouts, discuss what happened next, why they've decided to disband from the organization to create their own group, and their continued efforts to fundraise for the Palestine Children's Relief Fund.

Each year, we broadcast nearly 200 episodes of programming. As 2023 comes to a close, we are highlighting some of our favorite conversations. Today, we're sharing three important interviews on mental health and trauma. Senior Producer Tess Terrible shares her favorite conversations on these topics. First up, we're going to listen back to our conversation with Kate Dias: President of Connecticut Education Association. She spoke with us about school shootings, lockdown drills, and how they're impacting student and teacher mental health. At the start of the Israel-Hamas War, we zoomed in on trauma in that region — and the ripple effects here in the U.S. In our second segment, we hear from Dr. Julian Ford, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Connecticut Health Center. We also hear from Steve Sosebee, President and Founder of the Palestine Children's Relief Fund and Rabbi Debra Cantor from the B'nai Tikvoh-Sholom Synagogue. And later, we hear from Deb Bibbins: Founder and CEO, For All Ages; Connecticut Collaborative to End Loneliness and local efforts to address the loneliness epidemic. Full episodes: Feeling safe or creating trauma? How lockdown drills are impacting our schools The trauma of witnessing war, near and far 'What's eating at America': Addressing the loneliness and isolation epidemic Where We Live is available as a podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music, TuneIn, Listen Notes, or wherever you get your podcasts. While working as a journalist on the West Bank, Steve Sosebee met two Palestinian children who'd suffered traumatic injuries when their home had been bombed. Their innocence and injuries touched Steve's heart. He became determined to find treatment for them and through his efforts, they received free care in Akron, Ohio. Returning to the Middle East, he was determined to help more of Palestine's children and others throughout the region get the care they so desperately needed. With that, the Palestine Children's Relief Fund was born. Politics was pushed to the side in favor of humanitarianism and love. For the past nearly 30 years, Sosebee has been steadfast in his purpose - bringing aid, compassion, and love to children who are so gravely in need. Listen as Steve Sosebee speaks with host Bill Ellis about the big challenges and even greater rewards of living a purpose based on humanity over politics. When war erupted in the Gaza Strip, Linda Badran decided it was time to co-found a local chapter of the non-profit aid group Palestine Children's Relief Fund. She wants to rally fellow St. Louisans who want to see an end to the war and contribute to the healing, and recovery, of the thousands of children being harmed by violence.
A very special fundraising gig will take place in Doolin this coming weekend. Tara Howley, Aindrias de Staic and many more will take to the stage at the Attic for the Gig For Gaza on Saturday evening. Cuppa Tea TV's Le Cheile Le Ceol Open Session on Sunday afternoon will also be aiming to raise funds for the Palestine Children's Relief Fund. For more on this, on Thursday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey spoke with Niamh Davies, Doolin Arts Coordinator.
We hit our fundraising goal for Palestine Children's Relief Fund in October and this is the bonus episode we promised as a thank you for your support. As of today, you, our listening community, have raised $8900 — and our goal was $5000! That's incredible and we're so grateful for your resource sharing and messages of solidarity. This bonus episode is a conversation between Marcelle and Hannah about a paper Marcelle published in 2015 called Comic relief: the ethical intervention of 'Avodah 'Aravit (Arab Labor) in political discourses of Israel–Palestine. The text of the article available for you on our episode page at ohwitchplease.ca. You can read it by heading to our site, or just listen to Marcelle read the abstract in the opening part of the episode. Here is the direct link: https://www.ohwitchplease.ca/all-episodes/materialgirls-sitcomandreframingisraelpalestineAs a heads up, this paper was written in 2014 in response to anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian racism in North America. That racism wasn't new in 2014, and it remains powerful and widespread today, amplified by the mainstream media's dehumanizing portrayals of Palestinians in its coverage of the so-called “Israel-Hamas war.” Marcelle's conversation with Hannah is very much about that racism and that dehumanization; about the discourses that perpetuate dehumanizing stereotypes about Palestinians and Arabs. You may not have the spoons for this conversation right now, and that's ok! It'll be here for you when you're ready, and you're always welcome to pass the episode along to someone who's looking for more information about the crisis. Thanks again for supporting Witch, Please Productions and our collective contribution to the urgently needed financial aid for Palestine Children's Relief Fund. The link to contribute is here: https://pcrf1.app.neoncrm.com/ohwitchplease. The Palestine Children's Relief Fund's president and founder, Steve Sosebee, joins us to talk about Gaza's children, the nature of the work that the PCRF is doing and the immense pressure that the healthcare and sanitary systems are under right now in Gaza. Steve lays out the state of the healthcare system in Gaza pre- and post-October 7 and how the absolute destruction taking place is impacting their ability to support Gaza's children and vulnerable patients. He conveys the reality of what “operational” means for hospitals doing their best to support the community in Gaza right now, as well as the risks posed by the spread of disease now and in the imminent future. Finally, he explains why he believes there's no sufficient psychological treatment or support for the trauma that Palestinian children are facing because the real source of the trauma is the continued occupation and state violence that they are enduring. This episode was recorded on Tuesday Nov 7, at 7pm Palestine time. Please note that we're recording special podcast episodes relevant to understanding historical context to what is happening in Palestine. Make sure to check out the other highly informative conversations with guests from completely different disciplines who are generously sharing their time and insight in these dark times.About Steve Sosebee:Steve Sosebee is the president and founder of the Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF). While working as a journalist, Sosebee met two children in Hebron who had been injured by a bombing of their home. He brought them from the West Bank to the USA for free medical care. Following this, he met and later married a Palestinian woman named Huda al Masry, a social worker with the YMCA in Jerusalem. Together, they built the PCRF with the support of a network of volunteers from all over the world. In 2009, Huda passed away from cancer and Sosebee moved back to Palestine with their daughters, building the first public pediatric cancer department in Beit Jala Hospital in his late wife's name. About PCRF: Since its establishment in 1992, PCRF has become the primary humanitarian organization in Palestine that delivers critical and life-saving medical relief and humanitarian aid. To date, they've sent over 2000 children abroad for free medical care, as well as thousands of international doctors and nurses to provide tens of thousands of children free medical care in local hospitals. They have also delivered crucial humanitarian aid to Palestine's children. PCRF has also established two pediatric cancer departments, a new PICU and pediatric cardiology department in Ramallah, amongst other projects that support the country's healthcare system. ***** ABOUT THIS SERIES ***** The afikra Podcast is our flagship program featuring experts from academia, art, media and beyond who are helping document and/or shape the histories and cultures of the Arab world through their work. Prophecy Radio episode #106 discusses Chalie of the Gods chapters 9 through 11 in all of their glory, including how wistful and introspective Percy is these days! We also break down the latest Riordanverse news, including Rick's latest blog posts, J. Maya's fate on Survivor season 45, the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, and Graci Kim's newly announced series coming in 2025. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:02) Life has been pretty chaotic on every front lately, but we're doing our best to get back into the groove of the podcast. Thanks for sticking with us! We start the episode with a discussion of Rick's October 17 blog post, in which he discusses what's going on in Gaza at the present moment. This post had no promotion, and it was seemingly deleted and then reuploaded. Rightfully, fans have been critical of Rick for talking about Gaza and then transitioning into self-promotion. Please be aware there is A LOT of misinformation out there about what's happening right now, so do your due diligence and verify all the information you're receiving before passing it on. Tehlor Kay Mejia, Daniel José Older, and Sarwat Chadda have been speaking out a lot on their platforms about Gaza, Israel, and Palestine, so be sure to follow them for additional resources. Mark Oshiro is raising funds for Palestine through Books for Palestine. The auction is now live. Here is a list of Palestinian journalists on the ground in Gaza. If you have the ability to donate, charities like Save the Children, Doctors without Borders, and Palestine Children's Relief Fund are good places to start. You can also use 5Calls to talk to your representatives about a ceasefire. Rick also wrote a blog post on October 23 about the recent releases from Rick Riordan Presents, and some upcoming titles. We're particularly looking forward to A Drop of Venom, Winston Chu vs. the Wingmeisters, and It Waits in the Forest. Read Riordan has also been busy over the last two weeks, wanting you to catch up with Zyanya from Dawn of the Jaguar, as well as meet Admiral Paik from Fox Snare. They also wrote a cute little article about how to sneak into Camp Half-Blood. Graci Kim also announced the title and a vague release date for her next book, Dreamslinger. We read through the synopsis and confirm that we're really excited about this one! Kristen's Korner is back as we discuss the last two episodes of Survivor season 45 and J's fate on the island. The SAG-AFTRA strikes are ongoing, and we're waiting with bated breath to see what becomes of them. Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan (00:36:54) Let's kick off our discussion with Chalice of the Gods chapter 9! Getting chased by chickens is, like, Karen's worst nightmare. Annabeth is SO SMART, and we love how single-minded she is in leading the trio. Grover is so helpful in this chapter, and we love seeing him be the person with all the helpful information. Did you know that Hebe and Hercules got married!? Did we just find out why satyrs age half as fast as humans!? Grover must go distract the chickens while Annabeth and Percy commit a party fowl. NGL, we kinda love Li'l Killer. Okay, the plan is to sing a song and beg for forgiveness. The backup plan is Plan Chick…whatever that means! This chapter may have contained Karen's single favorite joke in all of Rick Riordan's books. Let's move on to Chalice of the Gods chapter 10. It's time to belt out a tune by some guy. Why is the choice always the plan succeeds or we die!? This is 90% all Percy's fault. Percy has his priorities, and Annabeth has hers. When did you figure out what Plan Chick was? Annabeth really is a genius. This was SO CLEVER. The trio FINALLY get returned to their proper ages. It's now time for Chalice of the Gods chapter 11. Hebe sends the trio after Iris, down at the farmers' market. It's so cute how excited Percy is for a local quest, but also pretty sad how traumatized he is by being turned back into a little kid. Sally Jackson gets the Mother of the Century award. Do we have to worry about her getting older!? What was Percy like when he was a kid? Mark Oshiro's influence on Rick is SO OBVIOUS in this chapter. Yes, Percy, MILLIONS of people have dreamt of slipping into your life. Can Percy wash the dishes and play video games at the same time!? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 107, in which we'll discuss Chalice of the Gods chapters 12-14! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Each episode, our Prophecy Radio hosts and their guests will keep you up to date on the latest information coming out of Camp Half-Blood, including upcoming books and adaptation news, discuss a topic of choice, and do a chapter by chapter reread of the Percy Jackson series. Like so many of you, I have been all consumed the last few weeks by the events going on in Gaza and the genocide that is being carried out against the Palestinian people. We've put everything on pause at First Name Basis to be able to try to share updates and share actions that we can be taking as a collective to try to support the activists and so many amazing humanitarian workers that are on the ground in Gaza. After having some conversations as a team, we realized that continuing to do anti-racism work is one of the things we can do as a group to facilitate productive conversations around big hard topics genocide and anti-Semitism. Listen in to hear more about what I mean. And be sure to follow along as we continue to amplify the voices of the affected populations on Instagram, and check out the show notes for resources to help you redistribute your resources to help in the humanitarian efforts and to help you advocate for a ceasefire. as a Black South African, my existence and freedom today are only possible because of the liberation efforts of anti-apartheid revolutionaries like Steve Biko, Winnie Mandela, Chris Hani, and Nelson Mandela. all of these people were labeled terrorists by the apartheid government and international community. like Israel, the USA and UK financially supported the South African apartheid government (until it was no longer popular to). after many attempts at non-violent protest, the ANC had to turn to armed struggle. they found that there was no other call for justice and freedom for Black South Africans that would be heeded. this is the case in all liberation struggles. the violence that was used to oppose the apartheid regime in South Africa can not be put on equal footing with the extreme violence of apartheid itself, and must always be viewed in its proper context: an attempt by an indigenous people to be free from the militarized and everyday terror of a white supremacist apartheid state. the same is true for Palestine, with respect to Zionism. decolonization is not a metaphor. when we see thorns of violence, and when they pierce our skin, we must look at them and consider: if i am against this thorn, i must acknowledge that this thorn has a stem, this stem has a root, and if i am not against the root of violence, suffering, and terror that gave this thorn life and made its existence not only possible but inevitable, I cannot in good conscience claim to be against violence at all. colonialism and imperialism are the root of all structural violence; are the true terrors against humanity and this earth, so normalized and so protected that to condemn them is to be labeled with words only appropriate for the militarized forces of the world that create the most heinous, and organized forms of violence we as human beings have ever been made to experience and witness. this is an episode in solidarity with my Palestinian siblings, suffering under the weight of an oppressive regime. Free Palestine — free every colonized people from imperialism and colonialism, from bombs, raids, checkpoints, seiges, humiliation, terror, blockades, forced removals, occupations, prisons, slavery, and exploitation. re-indigenize this earth so that peace, community, and love can be returned to the center of human life on this precious planet. As Jacques Tati’s best-remembered film, PLAYTIME is a technical achievement on many levels. The crew built an entire city block, complete with skyscraper façades and cardboard extras, to manufacture a grey, corporatized Paris against which to feature its many layered gags. It’s fitting, then, that the film’s third-act script-flip, which corrals us into a wonderfully chaotic nightclub, feels so freeing. But because the film is neither as pointed as MON ONCLE (1958) nor as dour as TRAFIC (1971), PLAYTIME occasionally feels as plastic as the staged city it wanders through. What TRAFIC lacks in punchlines, it makes up in pathos. A sidestep from the meticulous comedic craftwork that defined Tati’s masterpieces, it doesn’t feature many of the clever gags seen in MON ONCLE (1958) or LES VACANCES DE MONSIEUR HULOT (1953). It feels a little empty, actually – until you get used to its currents of anti-comedy and high-minded statements about the folly of man and the ways we get around without going anywhere. Hoo boy, you would think for a couple of guys who spent some time inside a college at one point in their life, they would know how to do simple math (like knowing 10am - 2am is 16 hours, not 14). But NOOOOOOPE. Anyway, E3 is coming and that means that this show is light on video games, but heavy on laughs. You know, like EVERY show? *nudge nudge wink wink* If you have extra money, or are feeling for the situation in Gaza right now, please consider giving the the Palestine Children's Relief Fund https://www.pcrf.net.

After a long, unforeseen hiatus, we are back with episode 9 featuring fellow Egyptian, Engy Mahdy of One and Four Studio! From Egypt to Saudi Arabia to New Zealand growing up and now based in Dubai, culture shock is a term that no longer applies to Engy. This one is a fashion-heavy episode with an OG in Dubai's creative scene. 11 minutes in and fabric suppliers are ringing her phone. In a branded graphic-tees world, One and Four's simplicity cuts through it all to provide ethically sourced and sustainable everyday clothing. Cut from a different cloth. They've got it all, from quick-dry fabric bodysuits and vegetable dyed cardigans, to simple recycled cotton polos. Engy will go to any lengths to keep her promise to herself to hold ethics and sustainability above all else, even as far as partnering with a Peruvian family to produce cardigans for one of her collections. Shout out Elma for sowing the buttons on those. Will it ever be possible to convince fast fashion to become sustainable, or is it up to the people to educate each other to consume more consciously? Tune in to find out. In this illuminating episode, we explore the challenges of freelancing, being independent, event collaboration, the role of social media, advice for up and coming designers, and much more. 0:00 - Who is Engy? 5:15 - Why are creatives marginalized? 9:41 - What is OneandFour Studio? 11:01 - quick business call 15:10 - Sustainability in fashion 21:20 - Motivations behind OneandFour 22:30 - Learning new design methods in quarantine 29:00 - Egypt and Sole DXB collaboration 34:46 - Graphic tees 37:33 - Stopping freelancing/client work 44:47 - Whats next for OneandFour? 45:38 - Effects of social media 46:44 - Engy's message to aspiring designers 48:10 - Other creative passions outside fashion? 49:43 - Story behind the name OneandFour 51:03 - Outro SUPPORT PALESTINE! In 2006, the Gaza Strip was plunged into darkness following an Israeli military assault on Gaza's only power plant. Since then, the 2-million-resident coastal enclave has suffered prolonged power outages. To cope with the cuts, private solar panel services have been installed in residential homes, hospitals, industrial and agricultural facilities, sewage water treatment and desalination plants. Shadia Darweesh, a mother of eight children, four of whom suffer from disabilities, has had a solar panel system since last year. The new source of power was provided by Sun Box, a private company, in return for 1,500 US dollars, donated by Palestine Children's Relief Fund, an NGO based in Gaza. Shadia is now able to look after her disabled children, who need ventilators and food processors, at home, instead of having to make the trip to the Al Aqsa hospital or the local clinic. Shadia needed the help of an NGO because the solar electricity comes at a price. The cost of a single kilowatt of solar panel-produced electricity ranges from six hundred US dollars to one thousand five hundred US dollars, very large sums in the current economic situation of Gaza. Benefits to all sectors of the community And it is not just individual families which are benefitting. According to Kamal Almash-harawi, an engineer who works for Sun-Box, one of the major installers of solar panels in Gaza, "the number of our beneficiaries, across the Gaza Strip has exceeded more than 100,000 so far. "They include refugee camps, neighborhoods, towns, streets and almost all other sectors of the community. The projects that we have so far executed included street lights, infrastructure projects, private and public use, as well as direct and indirect use by the community." Kamal told RFI that, since 2018, his private firm has imported items including batteries, inverters and protection boards from European countries and mainly from China. A perfect place for solar power projects Gaza's Electricity Company, which is responsible for distributing power to the population of Gaza, says that over the past 15 years, around 200 megawatts of electricity have been provided by both Israeli lines and Gaza's power plant. Gaza still needs another 300 megawatts to meet demand. Recently, the company has also resorted to solar panels, in an attempt to improve its services. With plenty of available sunshine...more than 350 clear days every year...Gaza is ideally suited to the development of this important resource. Which will improve the lives of many Gaza residents, to say nothing of the benefits to the environment.
Steve Sosebee is the founder of Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF), a non-profit humanitarian organization formed in 1991 that has been providing life saving, critical relief to Palestinians ever since. Since COVID-19 became a global reality, The Palestine Children's Relief Fund has been working on the ground in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, as well as Lebanon and Jordan's refugee camps to help support the public health care system and response by providing equipment and materials. Steve Sosebee is the president and CEO of the Palestine Children's Relief Fund. He's married to Dr. Zeena Salman, a pediatric oncologist working with the PCRF. For 25 years, PCRF has been leading medical missions to help children in the Middle East, helping children get medical treatment abroad, and delivering humanitarian aid.
