Drawing parallels from sports, language learning, and my own golf lessons, I highlight the importance of setting specific, attainable goals that push our current abilities. I share my personal experiences with Duolingo and golf, illustrating how purposeful practice leads to genuine growth and mastery. I think each part is promising on it's own, and I have a dream that they interconnect into something promising and powerful. I also have a standard, which is that you should be able to tell if it's helping. One of those parts (I think/hope), is "the generalized skill of Deliberate Practice." That is, the meta skill of: Noticing that your goals are bottlenecked on some kind of skill (or skills). Figuring out what those specific skills are. Figuring out who can teach you those skills, or, how to teach them to yourself. Creating an explicit practice regime. Actually putting in the work to practice. Noticing when your practice isn't working, and figuring out how to troubleshoot your process. I do not currently have this meta-skill. I am kind of betting that it exists, based on reading books like Peak, talking with Romeo Stevens, and reading stories like László Polgár who methodically taught his daughters chess. I think I've made progress in the two months I've been working on it, but that progress hasn't translated into "I quickly gained multiple skills" yet, which is the standard I feel like I should set for "this is actually working well enough that other people should be paying attention." I'm experimenting with using this my dialogue format for journaling my explorations here. I'm inviting a few people I know well to be top-level dialogue participants. She believes it extends to the characteristics of our own behaviour and how we show up in the world as individuals who aim to build a civil society. On this episode of The Workplace Communication Podcast, Shelby joins us to talk about how to stop hostility and incivility in the world. Join us as we discuss how shifting from focusing on the “difficult” people who prevent us from living collaboratively in a civil society to self-reflection on our own behaviours and decisions can have much greater impact on the world than we sometimes imagine. This is the final part of thsi special 3-part series where you are going to learn HOW to accelerate your English learning to reach your English goals faster in 2022. Get the ALL the worksheets, audio lessons, and transcription for this special training podcast series here: https://realenglishconversations.com/email/deliberate-practice/ About this episode... So what was the BIGGEST mistake I made that kept me stuck as a beginner for so long? It wasn't only because I was doing Naive Practice... But it was also because I was following the 'common' suggestions and ideas about HOW to learn a language, such as: "Just listen to lots of audio" "Watch movies with subtitles" "Take a language course" "Go to a Spanish speaking country. You'll learn fast!" Trust me, I tried ALL of them.... Multiple times. It seemed like these ideas worked for everyone else, but they weren't working for me. I thought, “Maybe I'm just bad at learning languages”. And at one point, I almost gave up. It wasn't until I started think about how I usually learn new skills that I realized, it's a simple 2-step method: Step 1: Think about the skill I want to be able to do. Step 2: Think of ways to learn and practice it. For Spanish, I wanted to be able to: > Speak with real people and understand them But when I looked at what I was actually doing > Memorizing random words and doing grammar drills Wait a minute… How are grammar drills helping my speaking? Or listening? Oops. They don't. And what type of words am I learning? …Words from grammar lessons. Are those the words used in everyday communication? Nope. Definitely not. This helped me realize, I was doing the wrong activities for the skills I needed. My next mission: Find a better way to practice speaking and listening. And this brought me to the ‘trial and error' part of my learning where I spent the next two years experimenting with different ideas. Although most of my ideas were complete failures… … Eventually I found the key methods that UNLOCKED my language skills and allowed me to make rapid progress. Like really rapid. I got up to an advanced level within 1 year. Although my story is ‘interesting' because it explains HOW I figured out how to reach fluency. My story is also the LONG and SLOW WAY. … And I don't recommend it. Because there is a MUCH faster way. In today's podcast, I want to share the concept of DELIBERATE PRACTICE which builds on the concept of Purposeful Practice. Without doubt, Deliberate Practice is the fast-track to fluency. And it's a method that can easily increase the speed you learn by 3x. >> Get the worksheets, audio downloads, and transcription for this ALL the lessons from this special training podcast series here: https://realenglishconversations.com/email/deliberate-practice/ Get on the Fast-Track to Fluency with our Special Offer HERE: https://realenglishconversations.com/memberships/member-plans/fluency-programs/ny-special-offer/

I'm laughing now but when I first set up in private practice I was completely terrified that I had “missed” something big when setting up insurance or data protection. Even now, three years in, I sometimes catch myself wondering if I have really covered all the bases. It is hard, no impossible, to think creatively and have the impact you should be having in your practice if you aren't confident that you have a secure business. BUT it can be overwhelming to figure out exactly what you need to prioritise before those clients start coming in. I've created a free checklist (plus resources list) to take the thinking out of it. Tick off every box and you can see your clients confident in the knowledge that you have everything in place for your security and theirs. We don’t have all the kids read the same book in reading, so why do we have all kids work on the same math facts? Now there are definitely times we have them read the same passages so that we can have a common conversation about things, but we also have times that kids are reading books at their level. We need to do the same for our students when it comes to math. The book Fluency Doesn’t Just Happen is your guide for that. The book is full of what to expect as kids are building their fluency and ideas on how to respect that. What do you actually do in your classroom to allow students to work in their zone of proximal development when it comes to addition and subtraction facts? Get all the info here: buildmathminds.com/40

Jordan is the best selling author of Called to Create, Executive Chairman at Threshold 360, host of a new podcast, The Call to Mastery, and something of a productivity ninja. This episode was exciting for me as Jordan is similarly fascinated with the role of work in life and has given himself to exploring a Christian theology of work. This episode also serves as something of a sneak peek at his newest book Master of One which will be available soon. Welcome to Episode 62! MTT Coach Gareth James and Peak Performance Strategist Dr. Tricia Cardner are back after a too-long hiatus! In this episode we break down all the fun we had between last year’s SCOOP, WSOP & our book release (Purposeful Practice for Poker). Gareth also previewed his current WCOOP plans including an announcement that he will be hosting a free webinar where he reviews hist most interesting WCOOP hands, so check out https://www.facebook.com/events/729678507472967/ for more info on that! We break down all the action and talk about decision points on all streets. Then Tricia led a discussion on some common illusions of competence that can impede our ability to learn poker effectively. Ep. 29 – The Importance of DisciplineDiscipline - to train or develop by instruction and exercise especially in self-control. Jerrod defines it as “Discipline is doing what you said you were going to do long after you feel like doing it.”Ali defines it as “Deciding what it is that you need to do and doing it consistently.”How do YOU define discipline?Discipline is normally considered to be a negative. If you were disciplined as kid, it typically meant being grounded or having things taken away. It is RULES you have to follow or pay the consequences. As an adult, it can mean a write up at work, losing a job or losing your freedom to make choices. In this episode, we discuss the different types of discipline, internal and external and how they evolve as you grow. When it comes to discipline, how do you hold yourself accountable? Has your discipline allowed you to influence others? What happens when you have no discipline? This Week's Purposeful Practice:1. Identify in what ways you could become more disciplined?2. Identify what the results of being more disciplined could be?3. Identify two ways you are committed to becoming more disciplined. 4. In addition, he also made the final table of a Monster Series event on Party. He also was a guest on an episode of The Chip Race Podcast where he talked about an interesting hand he played recently. If you want to change how you feel, change how you think. She gave several strategies for doing so. Gareth then took over the mic to answer Adam’s question about a hand he played blind versus blind. On this week’s episode of the Healthy Wealthy and Smart Podcast, Dr. Jason Silvernail joins me for Part 1 of Ask Jason Anything! Dr. Silvernail is a Doctor of Physical Therapy who was selected for the prestigious Army-Baylor Doctoral Fellowship in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy at Fort Sam Houston for subspecialty training and graduated in 2010, earning him both a Doctor of Science degree from Baylor University and Fellow status in the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists. A clinician and researcher, he has published clinical commentaries and original research in the medical literature including the Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy, Manual Therapy, and the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy. In this show, we discuss: -How manual therapy is integrated into the biopsychosocial framework -Rethinking the goals of your initial evaluation -Strengths and limitations of a pain science perspective on patient care -The roadmap to a military physical therapy career -Jason’s hiring process for seasoned professionals and new graduates -And so much more! While Jason is a proponent for making advances in research, he also believes that there is more to gain from the existing literature to improve patient care. He challenges clinicians and researchers to “actually start using the evidence we already have. What can we do to build processes in our health systems to help us better integrate existing research evidence and clinical practice to make it relevant to clinicians, to make it relevant to payers, and to make it popular and effective for patients so patients start asking for it… What can we do to integrate and better use what we already know?” Jason believes that there is a positive outlook for physical therapy and that the profession can fill a desired role in the current marketplace. He states, “Patients are looking for a low cost, low risk, non-invasive approach that they can have quick access to that is an appropriate match to their goals, that is matched to exactly what they want, and you can get what you want when you want it. There are not too many people in medicine that are offering something close to that, but PT is one of them.“ Utilizing the biopsychosocial framework for patient care has proven to be effective for Jason in his career. He advices, “One of the things I say the most to PT students is this job is half psychology and I used to think that my job was the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of non-surgical musculoskeletal conditions. That’s actually not my job. I am in the business of behavior change. And if you’re a PT, you’re in the business of behavior change too. And the sooner you understand that and the sooner you start to work on your ability to help engage others for behavior change, the more success you will have in your profession. “ For more about Jason: Jason Silvernail DPT, DSc, FAAOMPT qualified with a Master of Physical Therapy degree from the University Of Scranton Pennsylvania in 1997, and he has been in practice as a physical therapist since then.
