NQD is kicking off an all-new season focusing on the horror scream king Patrick Wilson! The modern horror icon stars in our first movie of the year: The Conjuring (2013). Director James Wan kicks off this horror movie franchise with Patrick Wilson alongside Vera Farmiga playing real-life paranormal investigator couple Ed and Lorraine Warren. They're skeptical of the haunting at the Perron house...until they get there. Discussion points include: 1970s sideburns, vintage real estate, mother/daughter relationships.
Dana and Tom with returning guests Kieran B (Host and Creator of the Best Picture Cast) and Jaylan Salah Salman (Film Critic for In Session Film, Geek Vibes Nation, and Keith Loves Movies) discuss the horror film Saw (2004) for its 20th anniversary: directed by James Wan, written by Leigh Whannell, music by Charlie Clouser, starring Cary Elwes, Danny Glover, and Ken Leung.Plot Summary: Saw is a horror film that takes a grim pleasure in its own sadism, positioning itself as both a grisly thriller and a twisted morality tale. At its core, the movie revolves around two men, Adam and Dr. Lawrence Gordon, who wake up in a dingy bathroom, chained to opposite sides of the room. They soon discover they are the latest victims of a deranged figure known as Jigsaw, a serial killer with a perverse mission: he doesn't just murder his victims—he forces them into life-or-death games where survival is determined by how far they are willing to go to save themselves.Director James Wan revels in pushing the audience's discomfort, presenting a relentless series of traps that are as much about mental anguish as physical pain. The characters' desperation is palpable, yet their choices feel less like genuine human decisions and more like pawns being moved by the screenwriter's hand. The result is a film that thrives on tension and shock but leaves little room for reflection.Chapters:00:00 Introduction to the Podcast and Guests02:47 Cast and Recognition for Saw04:54 Relationship(s) with Saw12:00 What is Saw About?20:45 Why Do People Like Horror Movies?28:37 Are There Any Good Horror Sequels?32:23 Plot Summary for Saw34:06 Did You Know?35:17 First Break36:10 What's Happening with Kieran and Jaylan39:46 Ask Dana Anything51:12 Best Performance(s)01:02:36 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)01:09:42 Second Break01:10:41 In Memoriam01:14:58 Tom Rant01:16:46 Best/Funniest Lines01:20:23 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:30:38 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:38:05 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:41:58 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:50:48 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:57:43 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total02:00:18 Remaining Questions for Saw02:10:10 Thank You to Our Guests and Final ThoughtsGuests:Kieran BHost and Creator of the Best Picture Cast; @bestpicturecast on X, IG, LetterboxdPrevious Episodes: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1957), Lost in Translation (2003),

Our 8th Annual Scary Movie Month has arrived and we kick it off with a film that has several legit frights and some "I'm creeped out in my own basement" staying power. Our 539th episode talks about demonic possession, child endangerment and other weird things. Director James Wan knows how to use jump scares in The Conjuring, but he also knows how to build tension and he really knows how to shoot a horror movie. This Malaysian mogul based his freak-fest on a real story and he cast solid actors like Vera Farmiga and Ron Livingston, but then he had to go and (as he often does) work with...yeah, Patrick Wilson. Lili Taylor and the 5 young actresses who play her daughters are fantastic though. In any case, The Conjuring delivers and it not only became a blockbuster, it inspired an entire horror universe. So whether you crouch menacingly on top of an armoire or playfully clap in the darkness, be prepared to hear us talk about screams and skin-crawls in this 10-year-old ghost story. Well, Actually: A Stir Of Echoes is the name of the Kevin Bacon movie we couldn't remember (the one where he discovers a terrible tragedy in his basement). On the big screen, the exploits of famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) have launched a lucrative movie franchise, beginning in 2013 with THE CONJURING. Director James Wan's unsettling supernatural thriller is based on the real-life haunting of the Perron family home in the 1970s, but just how accurately depicted is this terrifying tale? Fill your canteen with holy water and find out "WTF REALLY Happened to THE CONJURING!"

For years, “delebrities” — which refer to the continued licensing of the names and images of dead celebrities, helped rake in millions of dollars for advertising and marketing purposes. In showbiz, they've also been utilized from beyond the grave to maintain the integrity of a film in progress. Back when Furious 7 was still in the works, fans all over the world mourned the untimely passing of Paul Walker. In an effort to remain true to the spirit of the film. Director James Wan decided to hire a digital effects studio to insert Walker's likeness into the last parts of the movie. 350 CGI shots of the late actor, with distant shots of his brother, helped bring his character's arc as well as the movie into completion. This trend isn't limited to deceased celebrities. Recently, the DeepNostalgia app brought tons of netizens to tears as they watched old family photos of loved ones come alive in just a few clicks. It's brought looking to pictures, text chats, and other content of our deceased loved ones for comfort to a different level. If this is a glimpse into what life after death can promise for the ones who've been left behind, how will tech professionalists, programmers, and data scientists navigate the ethics of preserving the name, image, and likeness of the deceased? In Loving Memory: In this podcast, we mention how important it is to collect information and knowledge gathered in the past, and forward it in the most efficient manner. Ultimately, the purpose of technology has always been to enhance our capabilities by opening doors to new and exciting possibilities. We've been capable of introducing a better quality of life through the introduction of blockchain technology in the global logistics industry, online banking and cryptocurrency for the unbanked in developing countries across the world, and cloud storage for businesses around the world. What's contentious about this is the intent behind our usage of such technologies. These machines have yet to find a way to operate autonomously and on their own goals; it's always an extension of our desires and needs. Grief and loss have always been difficult aspects of our existence. However, with the introduction of these technologies, the permanence of their death is brought into question. What if we could create new memories with the artificial likeness of our deceased loved ones? Meaningfully Processing Our Grief: The modern understanding of how we process grief, which can be attributed to Swiss-American scientist Elizabeth Kübler-Ross, laid out the general roadmap: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally, acceptance. There is no question about whether we can develop technologies powerful enough to emulate our deceased loved ones. However, there certainly is contention about whether it would help us come to terms with their passing. A common concern, should these technologies proliferate, is whether it would hinder the grieving from making it past the first stage of denial — where they choose instead to cling to a false, preferable reality. To add to the confusion, progress does not always take a linear path. It is possible for some people to cope well with the loss of a loved one for extended periods of time, only to relapse aggressively into nostalgic and even self-destructive behaviors when they are exposed to a trigger that brings them back to such a painful point in their life. Closing Thoughts - Human Psychology and Experience: When such a visceral reminder of people who have had a strong impact on our lives can become a lingering possibility, the temptation to relapse becomes more tangible. How can these technologies be used to improve the way we process our grief? As is with any other man-made creation, understanding and regulating the impact of our work is just as important as turning the potential of what we make into reality. We live in exciting times and we are, doubtlessly, privileged to have our lives improved by the presence of the latest scientific innovations. Whether we can continue to remain at the helm of our own progress remains to be seen. Our response to these possibilities may define what it means to live out one of the most pivotal parts of the authentic human experience: the aspect of our lives that is associated with human psychology and moving on, and the painful learning process that everybody inevitably has to deal with. Director James Wan is far better at visual storytelling than creating a coherent narrative in this exposition loaded, over-complicated and overlong film but being amiable goes an awful long way. Be interesting to see if Amber Heard ever gets a role this prominent again.

The Harold & Maudecast Movie Reviews - Hush & The Conjuring 2 by Sarah Mason & Jake Essoe Who doesn't love Horror movies in the Summer!? This week we review two horror/thriller films one Now Playing and the other Now Streaming. HUSH from Writer/Director Mike Flanagan starring Kate Siegel who co-wrote the script and John Gallagher, Jr. It's a thriller with horror elements about a writer living in isolation in a house in the woods with just a couple nearby neighbors. She finally seems to break through her writer's block when a masked man appears to torment her forcing her to fight for her life. Just when you think you've seen every thriller plot twist and jump scare there possibly is in suspense films, think again. This well crafted script backed by solid performances from Gallagher and Siegel delivers. Be prepared to watch it with a pillow covering your face. It's that scary. THE CONJURING 2 is the much anticipated (amongst horror lovers) sequel to the 2013 film THE CONJURING. Reprising their roles as real-life 1970s paranormal sleuths Ed and Lorraine Warren are Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. Also returning is Director James Wan who in addition to THE CONJURING birthed the INSIDIOUS and SAW franchises. The Warren's case files include the infamous Amityville Horror incident which finds its way into the beginning of this sequel. This time the Warren's travel to London to investigate, on behalf of the Catholic church, a family being tormented by the ghost of an elderly man who died in their house. Turns out, it's a lot more sinister than that as the Warren's discover ties to Lorraine's earlier visions and the Amityville case. Though not as good as its predecessor, THE CONJURING 2 delivers on the jump scares -- you won't see them coming. And the demon takes the form of the CREEPIEST nun ever which says a lot coming from two hosts who endured Catholic school. As a standalone horror film, its solid, very scary, good performances, as part of this franchise, slightly lessor than the original. Listen to our review for our full 2 cents! HUSH - 8.5/10 THE CONJURING 2 - 7.8/10
