Book Vs. Movie: Mulan The AD 6th Century Poem Vs. the 2020 Disney Live-Action FilmThe Margos are celebrating AAPI month and we are very excited about the heroine from the poem Ode to Mulan who was either a real-life Calvary soldier or not. Her bravery (fighting against “nomadic hordes”) in replacing her father in battle by disguising herself as a boy has been told since the 6th Century AD. First transcribed in the Musical Records of Old and New, during the Southern Chen dynasty (according to Wikipedia!) it was first adapted as a play in 1593 and subsequent versions used different names for the lead character. The family name is Hua which means flower and Mulan stands for “Magnolia” in Chinese. The Ballad of Mulan takes place in Northern China with Mulan's father being asked to fight off the nomadic Rourans. However, he is too old for battle and her brother is too young--so she goes to fight instead. She fights for ten years and is then asked what reward she would like for her efforts. She asks to go home and return to her former life. In the end, she claims women and men fighting next to each other should not be an anomaly. There have been several films and operas based on the story of Mulan and in this episode, we discuss the 2020 live-action version directed by Niki Caro and starring Yifei Liu, Jet Li, and Gong Li. This episode is sponsored by Kensington Books and Unstable by Alexandra Ivy. The third in a small town thriller series, which emphasizes the creepiness of small towns that hide a lot of secrets! Mulan is a 2020 American fantasy action drama film produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Niki Caro, with a screenplay by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Lauren Hynek, and Elizabeth Martin, it is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1998 animated film of the same name, itself based on the Chinese folklore story, "The Ballad of Mulan". The film stars Yifei Liu in the title role, alongside Donnie Yen, Tzi Ma, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Ron Yuan, Gong Li, and Jet Li in supporting roles. The plot takes place in Imperial China, where Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, masquerades as a man to take her ailing father's place during a general conscription to counter the Rouran army.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulan_(2020_film)

Remember the innocent 90s, when white directors thought they had the N-word pass for some reason? What do you think their “woke” movie would look like? Probably like this, where the N-word is replaced by horrific rape and Mexican jokes. This proto-edgelord movie was looked at as such a good time romp that it was considered the perfect vehicle to transition from the hit network show ER to the big screen. Finally, 2020 is coming to an end. This year has brought a lot of bad things and one of the most painful has been the impact on the movie industry. December is usually reserved for Through the Cracks, that is movies that Jonathan (@berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) missed seeing during the year. Despite theatrical releases being basically non-existent, Jonathan and Corey still found four movies to fill out the month. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 2: Mulan (2020) Mulan came out the same day as I’m Thinking of Ending Things, but Disney+ required an additional $30 plus the subscription fee for people to see it. Considering Corey and Jonathan have no attachment to the original animated feature, they decided to wait to see it. Now it is just included with Disney+ so it is a perfect fit for the theme. Directed by Niki Caro and starring Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, and Li Gong, Mulan’s plot summary reads “A young Chinese maiden disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

W pierwszym odcinku jesiennej serii NERDYCJI o najgorętszym ostatnio filmie, czyli o nowej wersji Mulan od Disneya i wszystkich powiązanych z nią problemach. Najważniejsze omawiane filmy: Mulan (2020), reż: N. Caro; scen.: R. Jaffa, A. Silver, E. Martin, L. Hynek; w rol. gł.: Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, Li Gong, Jason Scott Lee, Jet Li, Tzi Ma; prod.: Walt Disney Pictures. For our September film discussion, we decided on Disney's streaming release of the live-action remake, Mulan. It's a film that is surrounded by controversy both domestically and abroad. Yifei Liu, the actress who plays the titular character, sparked a boycott hashtag last August (2019) with a pro-police post on Weibo. More controversy hit the film as early viewers realized one of the filming locations is Xinjiang, where the Chinese government is holding Uygur (Muslim ethnic minorities) in "re-education" camps. Host Jonathan Schwartz is joined by Alex Ago, Ange-Marie Hancock Alfaro, and Aubrey Hicks to discuss the film, its controversies, and the possibilities of theater in the pandemic.

Disney's live action Mulan is out! And oh wow has it caused a controversy. We took one for the team, gave it a complete watch, and come armed and ready to discuss it all: the good, the bad, and the terrible. Unless you've been living under a rock (or off Twitter, kind of the same thing), you'll know that when Mulan was first announced - just about this time last year - there was a lot of controversy! It was announced just about the same time as the Hong Kong protests we covered in episode 53: Geek Discussion: Hong Kong Protests, Blizzard Entertainment, & Cancel Culture (https://geekherring.com/discussion-blizzard-hearthstone-hong-kong/). Lead actress, American-raised Yifei Liu, shared a post on Weibo (a Chinese social media site) that she supports the Hong Kong police (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/aug/16/disneys-mulan-star-sparks-call-for-boycott-with-hong-kong-stance). To sum up, what she shared said, "I also support Hong Kong police. You can beat me up now. What a shame for Hong Kong.” Okay, we have two ways of looking at this statement. Either she's pro-China and doesn't support Hong Kong's protests for independence or as a fairly prominent Chinese actress, she's being very careful about what she's saying so as not to incite hatred against herself and her career. In more recent controversy, because YES, there's more! Disney filmed many parts of Mulan in Xinjiang, currently making history for the horrible human rights atrocities against over 200 million Uyghur Muslims. Concentration camps, forced sterilisation, and murder topping the charts, here. Should Disney have chosen these locations to film in? What solutions are out there when it comes to Disney as a company, our consumer dollah dollahs, supporting or boycotting China, and enjoying the damn things that we love. Speaking of - did we love Mulan or nah? We both think there was a lot of good in the film... but a lot of MEH, too. Mulan is a 2020 American action drama film produced by Walt Disney Pictures. It is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1998 animated film of the same name, based on the Chinese folklore "The Ballad of Mulan". The film stars Yifei Liu in the title role, alongside Donnie Yen, Tzi Ma, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Ron Yuan, Gong Li, and Jet Li in supporting roles. It is directed by Niki Caro, with screenplay by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Lauren Hynek, and Elizabeth Martin. Plans for a live-action remake began in 2010 but the project stalled in development hell. In March 2015, a new attempt was announced and Caro was hired to direct in February 2017. Liu was cast in the title role in November 2017, following a casting call of 1,000 actresses, and the rest of the cast joined over the following year. Filming began in August 2018 and lasted through November, taking place in New Zealand and China. With a production budget of $200 million, it is the most expensive film ever directed by a woman. Mulan's Hollywood premiere was held on March 9, 2020. Originally scheduled to be a wide theatrical release, it was ultimately cancelled in the United States after being delayed multiple times due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Disney instead premiered the film on September 4, 2020, on Disney+ for a premium fee in countries where the service had launched. It will have a traditional theatrical release in countries without Disney+, where theaters have re-opened. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the action sequences, visuals, and performances, but criticized the screenplay. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

The Movie Robcast reaches episode 99! And in the final double digit episode before we boldly to get into three figures (*gasp*) Robs Daniel and Wallis cast an eye over Disney's live action Mulan remake. The pair were really rather impressed with the 1998 animated version when reviewing it back on episode 87. So, what do they make of this $200m reimagining that has bypassed cinemas to premiere on Disney+? With a £19.99 price tag… Their chat dives deep into what's hot and what's not in the film, plus Hong Kong action movies, that 1998 original, plus the online calls for a boycott of the movie following star Yifei Liu's controversial comments about the Hong Kong protests. Then, Rob Wallis delivers his verdict on Charlie Kaufman's I'm Thinking of Ending Things, which has premiered on Netflix. The Twittersphere declared it a headscratcher of Tenet proportions, but what does Mr. Wallis think? Enjoy… and xièxiè(or thank you)! Directed by Niki Caro (The Zookeeper's Wife) and written by the team behind the newest Planet of the Apes trilogy (Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver), this movie seems like the perfect choice for a live action entry. A cast including Donnie Yen (IP Man, Rogue One), Jet Li (Hero, Once Upon A Time In China) and Yifei Liu playing the titular Mulan. Mulan will be released on March 27, 2020 and has been given a $300 million budget. We talk about the dangers of running on a wall, directly at someone who is also running on a wall. Also, the original villain of the cartoon version, Scott Cahn and whether or not a phoenix should be considered a "fire monster". This is our first episode after a prolonged hiatus and we are glad to be back. We answer the burning questions that you have been wanting answered. Will Mulan pull a horse up a mountain on a rope? Will there be a naked wrestling match in a pond? Will she climb a pole with a couple of gold medals? There’s only one way to find out. Subscribe to us on iTunes or Soundcloud to get an episode every week to hear what we have to say about all the new movie trailers. It's your unofficial Disney+ podcast, reviewing the most popular stuff on Disney+! Today on the show, we’re reviewing the live-action remake of Mulan, the 2020 movie starring Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, Tzi Ma, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Ron Yuan, Gong Li, Jet Li and more! But before we do, we have a discussion on “ordering” the movie through the Disney+ app. Was it easy or hard for us? Email the show and let us know how your experience was! We DO start out with a somewhat lengthy NON-spoiler discussion on Mulan so if you haven’t watched the movie, still tune in for that and then come back and listen to the rest of the episode when you have watched it. We’ll tell you what we thought (generally speaking) of the movie, the CGI, the sets/makeup/costuming, the choreographed action scenes, the lack of singing (it’s not a musical), etc. Once we get into spoilers, we’re mostly talking about the differences it the original movie compared to the new one, what we thought of the new characters, scenes, lines, and what we think some of the overall themes and message of the movie was. Write the show at disneyplusreviews@hotmail.com - we LOVE hearing from our listeners! Thanks for listening! Be sure to subscribe so that you can automatically get future episodes.
