When Sally McQuillen's grown son died in a boat accident, her greatest fear was realized. Christopher was often drawn to risk and struggled with addiction. In her riveting memoir, Reaching for Beautiful: A Memoir of Loving and Losing a Wild Child, Sally captures the wild ride of his jam-packed life and her deep love for him while reflecting on her own childhood and family's legacy of alcoholism. McQuillen shares insights about what it's like to experience the aftershocks of acute grief, through the lens of her experience as a mother and her professional vantage point as a psychotherapist. Even if they have not been touched by loss in this way, readers may see themselves in Sally's bittersweet illusion of trying to keep her child safe, in how she is challenged to let go of her fear, guilt, and regret in order to forgive herself, and in the ways grief teaches her about the power of love. It is a phone call no parent wants to receive. A child is missing —or even worse, presumed dead. That was the call that Sally McQuillen and her husband, Joe, received on a cold January day, nine years ago. Their 21 year old son, Christopher, and three friends, drowned in a boating accident when the canoe they were in capsized on an icy lake in Wisconsin. Sally shares her journey through that life changing experience in Reaching for Beautiful, a memoir that captures her deep love for her son, the agonizing grief of his loss and the lessons learned through a profound experience she has since learned to embrace as a gift. Christopher was, in Sally's words, a “wild child.”  Prior to getting married and beginning a family, both Sally and her husband struggled with addiction, but by the time Christopher was born, both had embraced years of sobriety and believed they could protect their children from the mistakes they'd made. And yet, despite all the preparation that goes into it, parenting is often a journey without a road map. The oldest of three, Christopher struggled with ADHD and later, addiction, but years of treatment gave him a path to sobriety, so by the time he entered college, he was on his way to a brighter future. But it was not meant to be.  “He had a couple of near death accidents, even when sober, says Sally, “So that just kind of showed me that what I've come to believe is true, I don't think that he was meant to be here for longer than his 21 years.”Sally McQuillen, LCSW, CADC, is a psychotherapist specializing in addiction, grief, and trauma recovery. Based in the Chicago area, she provides ongoing support for addiction recovery, as well as support for those recovering from the impact of a loved one's addiction. She works with clients to find peace and healing from trauma and loss. You can learn more about Sally and Reaching for Beautiful hereDo you know someone who has a story to tell? In this episode of Grow a Small Business, host Michael Denehey interviews Dave McQuillen, the founder of Sufferfest (wahooX), discusses building his cycling app into a $20M enterprise with 45 team members. He details the tough transition from digital downloads to a subscription model and the importance of staying close to customers. Host Michael Denehey explores McQuillen's journey, from managing growth to achieving work-life balance, and the valuable lessons learned along the way. Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here.   Michael delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice.   And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions:   What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to Dave McQuillen, the hardest thing in growing a small business is choosing what not to do. He emphasizes the importance of focusing on what truly drives success and avoiding distractions from bright, shiny objects that can divert attention and resources. What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? Dave McQuillen's favorite business books are "Why We Buy" by Paco Underhill and "Setting the Table" by Danny Meyer. He values "Why We Buy" for its insights into consumer behavior and merchandising, and "Setting the Table" for its lessons on customer experience and leadership. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Dave McQuillen didn't find podcasts to be particularly influential during his time with Sufferfest, but he mentioned enjoying cycling podcasts now that he's out of the industry. For growing a small business, he emphasizes the importance of tools that facilitate meaningful conversations with customers, rather than just quantitative surveys. Prototyping ideas and getting feedback directly from users is also crucial. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Dave McQuillen recommends using tools that facilitate direct, meaningful conversations with customers. He emphasizes the value of prototyping ideas and gathering feedback through interactive discussions rather than relying solely on quantitative surveys. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Dave McQuillen advises that he might not give himself any specific advice on day one. He believes that if he had known how challenging and consuming the journey would be, he might have been too scared to start. Embracing the unknown and adapting as things progressed was, in his view, advantageous to his success. Book a 20-minute Growth Chat with Troy Trewin to see if you qualify for our upcoming course. Joe McQuillen and his wife Sally have experienced the devastating loss of their son, Christopher. In this follow-up book, Joe continues to share his journey, a father-and-son tale, while simultaneously finding in-roads to connection and thriving on this ability to visit with his son on the other side at various ‘thin places.' With Chris at his side, Joe takes us from his beloved son's gravesite to his bedroom (now Joe's office) in Winnetka, Illinois to the Florida Gulf beaches at night where Joe has found hope and affirmation of his son's everlasting love through shared dialogues, to In Balance Ranch Academy in Arizona, where Chris was a shining star and a leader for troubled youth, and where he also found healing and the love of an American paint horse. Through their travels and visits to thin places, we learn about both men. Navigating the roads in his Jeep with a cigar, his trusty yellow lab, a Buffalo Bills folding chair in back, and a love of music and audio books which alternately pour from the speakers, Joe is the quintessential, hard-working guy's-guy who loves golf and a good steak, who sometimes makes “an Irish exit,” and who also happens to have a heart bigger than life itself. Their story speaks directly to you, providing courage, strength, hope, and connectivity—all delivered with a healthy dose of McQuillen humor. The words within provide comfort and solace for all of us, reminding us life is precious, and that although we may go around only once, we can continue to find connection from both sides of the veil. We're Not Done Yet, Pop, is fresh follow-up to his first book, My Search for Christopher on the Other Side, Joe McQuillen continues to share his difficult journey in this father-and-son tale, We're Not Done Yet, Pop: My Lessons from the Other Side, while simultaneously finding in-roads to connection and thriving on this ability to visit with his son on the other side at various ‘thin places.' With Chris at his side, Joe takes us from his beloved son's gravesite where a trusted friend might sometimes leave an empty Landshark bottle to his bedroom (now Joe's office) in Winnetka, Illinois, to the Florida Gulf beaches at night where Joe has found hope and affirmation of his son's everlasting love through shared dialogues, to In Balance Ranch Academy in Arizona, where Chris was a shining star and a leader for troubled youth, and where he also found healing and the love of an American paint horse. Joe's book is an easy-to-follow guide to finding out what best connects each of us with our loved ones in spirit. Throughout the book, Joe and Christopher offer evidence that our kids are still right here, sharing in every significant event and helping us move forward and heal.

We all have loved ones who have transitioned to the other side. They have not died. They have moved on to a different life in a different realm, the spiritual realm. The wonderous news is that we can still communicate with them, have a relationship with them, heal the past, and allow them to help guide us into our future. Just like we continue to grow on earth, they continue to grow in heaven. If we choose to communicate with them, we can learn from them and develop spiritually while we're still on earth. From the other side, Joe's son reassures him that there would have been even more pain had he lived longer. He then encourages Joe to trust his intuition and to stretch himself to reach spiritual enlightenment and soul enlightenment, telling him that it will be “exciting” and he needs excitement now. Please join us Thursday to learn how to communicate with your loved ones on the other side and to hear the lessons Joe has learned by communicating with his son who passed over in early 2016.
