“We don't 'speak for young people, we let them be the voice and share their perspective.” We keep coming back to the S – ‘social and societal impact' in many of our conversations with clients, leaders and marketers, we're discussing the role of business, both in how they operate and what they are doing for society. In this episode of the podcast we have a chat with the brilliant Kian Bakhtiari, Founder of The People, a Gen-Z consultancy. We were keen to know more about the work Kian does both with the youth generation and businesses, how he brings those worlds together (which is very much needed). Kian explains, “We've applied such a narrow lens to how business can be done, how marketing can be done that we've lost track of the opportunities and all the ways that we can create a more flourishing society and more sustainable future.” Kian tells us about how the younger generation feel and think about the world they are growing up in, making the point, “Wealth inequalities are a bigger determinant of your future than your education and how hard you work.” Kian and his teams bring Gen Z insights into the boardroom, they want to close the gap between as he says, “those who make the decisions and those whose lives are impacted by the decisions”, opening up opportunities to share knowledge and insights both ways and, and create a space to explore how we can change business. A new author, Kian has recently published his book, ‘Marketing for Social Change – How to Turn Purpose into Business and Social Impact' , a book which explores and asks the question – What is the role of marketing in the 21st century? Like us, Kian firmly believes that marketing has a significant role to play and if harnessed in the right way can accelerate social change. “We need to find ways to bring business and communities together.” When asked how he would measure social impact, Kian shares, “There are lots of different lenses on social impact- start by being neutral, then bring in meaningful connection and impact.” “Start small – it can be really overwhelming at a system level. What is something you can do today which might have an impact and go from there.” Tune in and listen as we talk to Kian about: The importance of the role of marketing in driving positive impact on society. Why he wrote his new book ‘Marketing for Social Change' and what he learnt. Thinking about the way things are done, outside the ways things are currently done. The work he does with the youth community and, diverse communities. Understanding what businesses want from the future. What unifying factors young people are finding challenging. Social impact and how we can approach it and measure it. The second episode of our new specialist series, Explore: How To Plan An Expedition, focuses on The Five P's - Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance. In this episode, Matt speaks with Nigel Winser, Felicity Aston, and Stephen Jones about the importance of proper planning. The vast majority of the time, expeditions are won or lost in the planning stage, and often, the moment you step into the field isn't the start of your expedition, it's half way. Matt, Nigel, Felicity and Steve discuss common pitfalls in planning, methods of team selection, and advice and resources out there.Nigel Winser needs little introduction; his career directing interdisciplinary research and learning programmes in Africa, the Middle East and Asia spans decades. He was Deputy Director of the RGS, responsible for developing and managing 11 major field programmes, and Executive Director at Earthwatch leading its ‘citizen science' programmes to support conservation and sustainable development priorities worldwide.Felicity Aston MBE is a British polar explorer, author, speaker and student research scientist. In 2012 she became the first woman to ski alone across Antarctica. Starting out as a Meteorologist with the British Antarctic Survey, Felicity has since been involved in many ground-breaking expeditions. She is currently undertaking research investigating airborne microplastic deposited on Arctic Ocean sea ice. Steve Jones is an Expeditions Manager for Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions. He also works as a speaker, and advises on safety management and crisis management to projects around the world. Steve is also a contributor to the Oxford Handbook of Expedition and Wilderness Medicine, and Vice-President for Expeditions and Fieldwork on the RGS Council. You can find out more about the RGS and use the Explore digital resources by visiting rgs.org/explore, or @rgs_ibg on socials.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-adventure-podcast. Today on Sojourner Truth in partnership with the Global Justice Ecology Project our Earth Watch guest is Anne Petermann, Executive Director of the Global Justice Ecology Project and international coordinator of the campaign STOP GE Trees. Researchers at the State University of NY College of Enviornmental Science and Forestry are developing genetically engineered (GE)American Chestnut trees that are blight resistant, and hope to win government approval for its unregulated release in the environment. GE trees are being lauded as the biotech solution for forest conservation, however the reality is that should GE trees be approved they would be mass produced and used for commercial production of timber, pulp and bio-fuels, instead of forest conservation. The GE American Chestnut could be the first GE forest tree species planted specifically to spread freely through forests, and the dangers of this could be catastrophic to existing forest ecosystems. Not only does the US regulatory system have no specific regulations to deal with the release of GE trees into forests, but the highly experimental introduction of GE trees could create new problems and worsen existing pressures on forest ecosystems, already strained from unsustainable logging practices, invasive species, introduced pests and pathogens and the surmounting impacts of climate change. Anne Petermann has played a key role in the global effort to stop the release of genetically engineered trees into the environment in the last 22 years. In 2008 she led a campaign demanding a global ban on GE trees that won an historic decision on GE trees from the UN Convention on Biological Diversity warning countries of the dangers of GE trees and urging them to use a precautionary approach.

Today on Sojourner Truth's weekly Earth Watch segment our guest is Policy Director for the Center for Food Safety, Jaydee Hanson. Multinational corporations pushing GM crops, food, trees and fish are up against environmentalists who outright oppose them or question the need for them. Will we see a future where foods are derived from GM microorganisms or GM animals are more broadly introduced into the market? Does the general public even know what GM foods they are now consuming? In 2021, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California agreed, with the ruling that the FDA ignored the serious environmental consequences of approving GM salmon. The court also ruled that FDA's unilateral decision that GM salmon could have no possible effect on highly endangered, wild Atlantic salmon was wrong and it violated the Endangered Species Ac. The original suit was filed in 2016 by the Quinault Native American tribe in Washington state, who sued the FDA along with environmental and fishing organizations, for approving the safety of GM salmon based on limited research. We will speak to Policy Director for the Center for Food Safety, Jaydee Hanson on the recent court ruling and what it means for the future of GM foods in the U.S. Jaydee Hanson's expertise includes emerging technology issues related to nanotechnology, synthetic biology, animal cloning, animal genetic engineering and gene editing. He has a Master's degree in Biogeography and Resource Management from the University of Hawai'i. Before coming to the Center for Food Safety, he worked for the National Marine Fisheries Service, starting both the environmental justice program of the United Methodist Church and their genetics and bioethics program. He is a co-author of the Principles for the Oversight of Synthetic Biology, the US co-chair for the Nanotechnology Taskforce of the Transatlantic Consumers Dialogue, a member of the synthetic biology experts committee for the Convention on Biological Diversity and a fellow of the Institute on Biotechnology and the Human Future.

Earth Watch: Dawn Chapman on the Westlake Landfill Superfund Site

There are 1344 Superfund sites on the National Priorities List in the United States. Forty-eight additional sites have been proposed for entry on the list. For years activists have worked to draw attention to the Westlake Landfill, in MO, a superfund site, that encases a radioactive fire that is currently burning underground. The radioactive Superfund site has sat in the middle of a St. Louis Community for over 45 years leaving surface level radioactive waste to blow and be subject to all the elements. Presently, the Westlake Landfill is experiencing an active fire deep underground. It causes waste to decompose at an accelerated rate, producing excess gas and liquid. This results in a pungent odor byproduct of this gas and liquid. The Westlake Landfill sits in the floodplain of the Missouri River where radioactive contaminants (from the landfill?) are spreading into other neighboring communities along the river. The waste was created during World War II, when St. Louis-based Mallinckrodt Chemical Works purified all the uranium for the first nuclear weapons. The waste was eventually purchased by Cotter Corporation, then illegally dumped in north St. Louis County in 1973 The EPA classified it as a Superfund Site–a classification only given to the most polluted sites in the U.S.-- and put it on the National Priority List in 1992 30 years ago. Since then residents most impacted by the toxic waste site have organized to demand government action. In 2018 the EPA declared plans to remove a majority of the radioactive material and ensure the safety of the surrounding community. The clean up plan intended to remove contamination by digging out waste at varying depths between 8 and 20 feet below the surface, depending on the amount of radioactivity that exists at each location. Concerned residents continue to urge the EPA to revise and adjust their clean up plan to include the river and surrounding areas. Unhealthy levels of radium and other radioactive material remain despite these clean up efforts, resulting in constant exposure for the soil and the people living closest to the site, increasing their chances of developing lung cancers, lupus, asthma, and tumors. Advocates continue to urge the EPA to continue to clean the superfund site and make revisions to their clean up plan that take into account data reflecting current radioactive levels. Our guest joining Sojourner Truth Radio today is Dawn Chapman, a resident who lives near the landfill who will tell us what the EPA has done this far; the impacts of contamination on her community and discuss her ongoing advocacy work to push the EPA to clean up the West Lake site. Dawn Chapman, runs non-profit organization “Just Moms STL, (St. Louis) working in tandem with co-founder Karen Nickel. Just Moms is an advocacy group formed with the goal of raising awareness and community engagement regarding the nearby West Lake Landfill Superfund site. Living mere miles from the landfill, Dawn became engaged in this effort in 2013 after contacting the MO Dept of Natural Resources regarding pungent odors. That call lead Dawn on an unlikely journey from housewife and mother of three to becoming an advocate, a repository of knowledge and history about this site, and even a mentor to people dealing with the impact of other Superfund sites on their own communities across the country. Dawn has collaborated with and advised local, state and federal agencies, media organizations, and both locally affected community members as well as passionate environmental advocates worldwide. She has presented to groups as widely varied as high school and college classes, church and municipal groups, the MO State Legislature, all the way up to appearing before the United Nations Human Rights and Environmental Justice division. She was also invited to present to the White House Council on Environmental Quality. Her story is documented in the HBO Documentary: Atomic Homefront.
