Matteo Franceschetti has always been obsessed with performance. Athletic performance, business performance, and now sleep performance. An athlete from a young age—he was a competitive ski racer in his native Italy and played tennis and raced cars on the European stage—Matteo has always been focused on winning, and on winning in record time. That drive to succeed propelled him from sports podiums to the top tier of the international legal world and to start two clean-tech companies on two continents, all before age 30. Not surprisingly, sleepless nights were a way of life. It was Matteo’s quest for more restorative sleep, in fact, that led him to quit his previous life and launch Eight Sleep, a New York-based company dedicated to fueling human potential through optimal sleep, and to turning the bed into a seamless health platform for improved health, performance, and longevity. The path he took to becoming CEO of Eight Sleep, however, is as circuitous as the tracks he raced in his youth. Some of the Topics Covered by Matteo Franceschetti in this Episode What Eight Sleep does and how they got started Why Matteo decided to use Indiegogo to launch Eight Sleep The initial version of Eight Sleep The team behind Eight Sleep The challenge in manufacturing and fulfilling the first 8,000 orders of Eight Sleep and why Matteo booked a one-way ticket to China What happened after the Indiegogo campaign and how Matteo grew the business Matteo's advice around getting through difficult times as a founder The product lineup today at Eight Sleep today The future for Eight Sleep The tech behind the complexities of the Eight Sleep product Matteo's approach to growing Eight Sleep today Matteo's health stack - sleep, nutrition, and exercise routine - and why he moved from 8 to 9 hours of sleep Why you should go to sleep at the same time each night Matteo's opinion around naps Using a regret minimization framework to guide your decisions How Matteo structures his days and weeks Sign up for The Weekly Grind, for actionable insights and stories from successful entrepreneurs delivered to your inbox once per week: https://www.justgogrind.com/newsletter/ Listen to all episodes of the Just Go Grind Podcast: https://www.justgogrind.com/podcast/ Follow Justin Gordon on Twitter: https://twitter.com/justingordon212 Follow Justin Gordon on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justingordon8/

When I think of technology for sleep, I think in two dimensions. In one dimension you have your phone with emails coming in, Slack messages, text messages, Whatsapp and so on that can give you anxiety. That type of technology is bad because it keeps your mind racing when you really just have to slow down. Our technology at Eight Sleep has a different concept; you don't see it - it's just there embedded in the bed and it does the work for you as it enhances your sleep without anxiety. We've just leveraged the power of sensors and machine learning to help your body recover faster behind the scenes. - Matteo Franceschetti Get 15% off your CURED Nutrition order with the code WELLNESSFORCE ---> Get The Morning 21 System: A simple and powerful 21 minute system designed to give you more energy to let go of old weight and live life well. How their embedded sensors are able to tell people when they're about to get sick or are sick already. Their vision of someday being able to help prevent strokes with their data collection. What they've done to include the component of behavior change into achieving greater sleep fitness. Tips, insights, and suggestions that you will receive using the Eight Sleep products to help you make good, healthy lifestyle choices. Exploring whether good sleep comes from the amount of time or quality of it. How you can get a good night's sleep in a compressed amount of time. Why cold temperatures are necessary to maximize your deep sleep but REM sleep calls for thermoneutrality. What thermoneutrality is and why we need it for a quality night's worth of sleep. [23:00] How Does AI Help Us Sleep Better? Why technology is such a great tool for us to sleep better at night especially in this modern age. How technology, when it comes to too much screen time, messages, and social media, creates too much anxiety. Why the more the variability happens between heartbeats, the more recovered and refreshed you are. What health transformations Matteo personally went through with his Eight Sleep's collected data. How a 20-minute power nap can help reduce your adenosine levels and have a greater focus for the rest of your day. Why the best way to reduce your adenosine levels is to take a quick nap rather than go for that cup of coffee. Why Eight Sleep isn't just for athletes but for everyone too who's looking to improve their health. His recommendation to people to try and sleep at least 1 hour more each day for a week and see how that makes them feel. [38:30] Why Do We Struggle With Sleep? Why it might seem like a simple thing to try and get more sleep each night but it can actually be a very difficult thing for people to do. The fact that people are now viewing sleep deprivation as the new smoking for our society. How you will achieve peak energy, focus, and performance when you begin to focus more on getting better sleep each night. Why better sleep will help you reduce disease as well as increase longevity and lose weight. The research out there that shows disease from obesity to heart disease to Parkinson's are directly related to sleep deprivation. 252 Harpreet Rai The various hormones that are impacted by sleep including ghrelin and leptin which impact our appetite and eating patterns. 357 Robb Wolf Why it's so important to have a consistent sleep pattern by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day including the weekends. How to wind down 30 minutes before bedtime with blue light glasses, orange light bulbs, melatonin, and magnesium supplements. The benefit of creating thermoshocks in the body before bed with hot and cold showers but why it's not for everyone. The Eight Sleep feature that their customers love the most which is a thermal and vibrational alarm to wake them up without any sound. breathwork.io M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Power Quotes From The Show How Sleep Impacts Our Weight & Eating Habits "When we workout, we feel good and thus tend to eat healthier just because of that feeling. This is the same concept with sleep; if you sleep well and had a solid eight hours of good sleep, then when you wake up, hormonal changes with your ghrelin and leptin levels will take place. You will not crave carbohydrates, bad food, and most likely less food. The point is, this is not a placebo effect in your mind but your hormones justifying these behaviors. While instead when you are sleep deprived, and you want to try and compensate that sleep deprivation and lack of energy in your brain through food in particular junk food." - Matteo Franceschetti Quantity vs. Quality Of Sleep "The standardized quantity of sleep is 7 to 9 hours per day but the reality is that you need a certain percentage of deep sleep and REM. Light sleep is an inefficiency of your body to transition across the different sleep stages and that is where we believe that we can compress your sleep and let you recover faster. At the end of the day, good sleep is strictly connected with your quality. If you can get your 20-25% deep sleep and 20-25% REM, you translate that into minutes and that is what you really need. Deep sleep is more for your physical body and REM is more for your mind." - Matteo Franceschetti Let Eight Sleep Do The Work For You "What I love about our Eight Sleep technology is that you don't have to wear anything, you don't have to charge anything, you don't even have to change your habits. There is nothing you need to remind yourself; there are no obligations. You just keep doing what you were doing last night but this time your bed is marked and it will improve your sleep." - Matteo Franceschetti Links From Today's Show 341 Josh Clemente Joe Rogan Experience #1555 - Alex Jones & Tim Dillon 252 Harpreet Rai 357 Robb Wolf Why Technology Is The Future Of Sleep Expanding Our Lineup For The Future Of Sleep SleepFoundation.org - Eight’s Matteo Franceschetti Interview Eight Sleep Blog | The Health Stack: with Ali Spagnola Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes breathwork.io M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Eight Sleep Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube Matteo Franceschetti Twitter LinkedIn About Matteo Franceschetti Matteo is the Co-Founder and CEO of Eight Sleep, the world's leading sleep FITNESS company. Yes, the Holiday season is upon us which means two very important things: a chance to slow down from the usual frantic pace of life to spend time with loved ones and close family AND the insanity of 2020 is almost behind us. This has definitely been one of the craziest, most hectic years in anyone’s lifetime, BUT the good news is that we’re almost through, we just have to make it through the Holiday season. If you’re like me, I LOVE giving gifts to the people who are important in my life, it’s a chance to show how much I care about them. However, while I love giving gifts, I find the process of picking out gifts somewhat intimidating which is why I’ve put together the 4th Annual All About Fitness Holiday Fit Gift Guide to help you find that special something for the special someone in your life who loves to sweat. Yes, the is the 4th annual Fit Gift Guide but it’s the first one I’ve recorded with a good friend and colleague, Tricia Murphy Madden (previous gift guides were recorded with Amanda Vogel, who was unavailable this year). To help you find the perfect gift for that special someone I asked Tricia to come up with ideas that would be perfect for women while I offer suggestions for the men in your life. Whether it’s a colleague or distant cousin that you got in the family gift exchange or someone you snuggle with every night, hopefully you will hear a suggestion that will help you identify the right item to give this Holiday season. In the interest of full disclosure, some of the gifts suggested are from previous guests of the All About Fitness podcast - that’s only because I have been using the products and believe in their ability to help you to enhance your quality of life. We've all heard of athletes getting in trouble for taking performance enhancing drugs (PEDs). The primary purpose of PEDs is to help athletes recover quicker so they can do more training. What if there was a way to boost your performance that didn't require you to take drugs, would you be interested in that? Whether you want to perform better on the field or in the office, getting better sleep is one of the most effective things that you can do to achieve optimal performance. Not only can good sleep hygiene enhance your ability to perform, but the best part is that it will not result in a positive urine test. Matteo Franceschetti was an avid athlete who realized the power of sleep to help human performance which resulted in starting a technology company to improve the way we sleep. EightSleep produces the Pod, a mattress that can track your health data while you sleep to ensure that you are getting the best results from your down time. On this episode of All About Fitness, Matteo talks about the power of sleep and the benefits of using technology to achieve a better night's sleep; get ready for an engaging and enlightening discussion on how sleep can optimize your performance. Nutrition, exercise and sleep are the key components of optimal health. Yes, you may workout everyday and count every single calorie yet if you're not paying attention to your quality of sleep, you may not get the results you want from your exercise program. A lack of quality sleep not only affects your physical performance, but being sleep deprived is bad for your health and could cause you to overeat or drive like you're under the influence of alcohol. On this episode of All About Fitness, Dr. Craig Heller, a professor of biology at Stanford University and an advisor for EightSleep - a temperature controlled mattress that can help you optimize your sleep, discusses the biological reasons of why the body needs sleep and offers suggestions for how you can achieve a great night's sleep every night. Many of us may think we’re at the edge of biohacking, but if we aren’t putting enough focus on our sleep, we’re missing a vital step. No matter how dialed-in we are to optimization, a lack of quality sleep will always hold us back from our full potential. Sleep is something worth investing in, so why are we still spending our nights on basic and unsophisticated mattresses? The mattress has been the same for 2000 years, it’s time to modernize it. We’re surrounded by technology in almost every aspect of our lives, so it only makes sense to incorporate it into our rest routines. How can we leverage technology to improve our sleep performance? In this episode, CEO of Eight Sleep, Matteo Franceschetti shares how the Eight Sleep mattress helps us optimize our sleep. You can improve your sleep by being consistent in your times. Waking up early during the week and late on weekends only confuses the body. -Matteo Franceschetti Three Takeaways How temperature affects our sleep: Temperature is one of the biggest factors impacting our sleep, and it changes as we go through the stages of drifting off, going into REM, and later waking up. Eight Sleep assists this process by helping our bodies move into those temperature changes faster. How to wake up more refreshed: It’s difficult to feel ready for the day when we’re waking up to a screaming alarm clock. The Eight Sleep mattress helps us wake up more gradually by slowly increasing temperature in the last few hours of our sleep, and vibrating softly when it’s time to get up. What makes Eight Sleep more effective than a wearable sleep tracker: On top of being uncomfortable, wearables require charging to give us an accurate reading. By installing an Eight Sleep mattress, we don’t have to worry about charging a device. All we need to do is go to bed. Guest Bio- Matteo Franceschetti is the Co-Founder and CEO of Eight Sleep. Given his extensive background as a professional athlete, a lawyer, and Co-Founder of two clean-tech companies, it should come as no surprise that Matteo has had his fair share of sleepless nights. It was this experience that encouraged him to shift his efforts towards sleep optimization, and today he leads the world’s leading sleep enhancement company. Matteo Franceschetti is the cofounder of Eight Sleep. More than just a comfortable mattress, their technology offers everything you need to achieve sleep fitness.
What does it really take to optimize your sleep? Should you pop some melatonin and hope it gives you a good night’s rest? Or can you simply wear a black-out blindfold and hope for the best? Matteo Franceschetti, the founder and CEO of Eight Sleep, which is a high-tech mattress that helps you optimize your sleep using your own biometrics, comes on the show to share exactly what it takes to improve your sleep. You’ll discover the key ingredients for better sleep, what you should be tracking to see if you’re getting the right quality and amount of sleep, and how temperature affects your sleep. Dr. Anthony Gustin and Matteo also veer off into non-sleep related topics to show how optimizing other areas of your life -- or disregarding them -- can impact your sleep. On top of being the founder and CEO of Eight Sleep, Matteo was a business lawyer and serial entrepreneur who co-founded and led GIR and Global Investment, which you’ll hear more about in this episode. But since those businesses, his Eight Sleep company has accelerated and was even named one of the Most Innovative Companies in Consumer Electronics by Fast Company. His Eight Sleep company has also radically transformed the traditional mattress by developing cutting edge AI and machine learning models to track biological signals during sleep to help people optimize recovery and rest. On top of that, Matteo has been the co-chair at FWD.us and a mentor for Techstars, Microsoft Bizpark, and the NYU Summer Launchpad Program and he’s a member of the Forbes Technology Council. Tune in now to see how you could be optimizing your sleep health.

Sleep is incredibly important for all of us considering we spend roughly one-third of our lives sleeping, and in today's episode, we will be looking at sleep science and technology. If you are a true fan of Brains Byte Back, you will know that we have covered sleep and technology before in our previous episode "Sleeping with technology," where we looked at how modern tech hinders our sleep. However, today's episode will be different as we will look at how technology can help our sleep, specifically through the use of smart mattresses. Joining me to discuss this is Matteo Franceschetti, the co-founder and CEO of Eight Sleep -- a technology company based in New York City that specializes in developing and manufacturing smart mattresses. In this episode, you will learn how smart mattresses can produce an optimal environment for sleep, what the data tells us, and how this type of technology could replace trips to the doctor. In addition to this, you will also learn what your body needs to fall asleep, why your circadian rhythms are so important, and how temperature can help you fall asleep faster.

One of the biggest challenges of launching a company is transitioning from the security and support of a corporate job into the unknown, and how your former corporate allies may question every move you make. For Alexandra Zatarain, cofounder of EIGHT SLEEP (the world's first sleep fitness company), she had both the trust in and of her cofounders, and the knowledge that they were onto something important that’s universal to everyone on the planet: the need to fall, and stay, asleep. Alexandra and her team have now raised millions of dollars, were selected to participate in prolific accelerator programs like StartX and YCombinator, and have been shipping product non stop since they completed their fundraising seed round! Alexandra joins Socialfly co-founder Stephanie Cartin for a conversation about building her business and career, and describes her journey to success, including about the challenges Latino and female founders go through; why Indiegogo was such an important tell for cash flow and testing interest; how Eight Sleep uses science and leverages knowledge through the mattress itself; and, why it’s important to just keep swimming.

Today I’m joined by Matteo Franceschetti. Matteo is the CEO of Eight Sleep, the sleep fitness company. In today’s episode, we talked about how Eight Sleep is using AI, data, and temperature regulation to improve sleep. How Matteo plans to expand beyond the mattress to reinvent the entire sleep environment. And why Eight Sleep is often compared to Tesla. Let’s get into it. More from Matteo & Eight Sleep >> Matteo Franceschetti has always been obsessed with performance. What We Discuss with Kris Buckner: Why the trillion-dollar counterfeiting industry should concern you -- even if you don't care that the "Gucci" bag you got for $12 can't be spotted as a knockoff by the snootiest in your circle of friends. What gets counterfeited? You name it: designer clothes, automobile parts, cancer medication, alcohol, makeup, vaping products, perfume, computer parts, and kids' cough syrup are just the tip of the iceberg. How buying or selling counterfeit goods -- knowingly or otherwise -- potentially benefits corrupt regimes, terrorists, and organized crime networks around the world. The real harm counterfeit goods pose to the end consumer, from health risks associated with contaminated products to loose parts that can become choking hazards for small children.
