Point of pleasure, celebrate moments of joy or connection. Lesley Logan 0:19  Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started.Lesley Logan 1:02  Welcome back to the Be It Till You See It interview recap where my co-host in life, Brad, and I are going to dig into the eye-opening convo I had with our guest, Kristal DeSantis in our last episode. If you haven't yet listened to that one, you should, especially if you're married or wanting to be married to a dude, because I think it was just a really, but if you want to be married to a woman, you know, also there's stuff in there. (inaudible) Communication is universal and I think we all can. Brad Crowell 1:28  I feel like it's also like a social commentary on how we value ourselves, (inaudible) you know, or the stories that we've been told. How about that? Lesley Logan 1:36  Oh, the stories we've been told, the stories we've been raised with. And, you know, we're all taught different things, and so you might be dating someone who's taught something different than you, and so you gotta get on the same page. Brad Crowell 1:46  Yeah, honestly, I was a little concerned when I read the topic. I was like, oh, there's a doctor female who's coaching men. That just seems weird, but I really appreciated her approach to the conversation and the high level on both sides of the conversation about, you know, we're like, almost like two ships passing in the night from the way that we were raised. Anyway, I'm doing a lot of hinting at, you should go back and listen to the last episode if you didn't already.Lesley Logan 2:14  Also, she wrote a great book, so we are to give it out on our tours (inaudible) people. I feel like it's really great and I, too, was a bit concerned. I was like a woman coaching on what it means to be a loving man, but she wasn't condescending in any way. And it wasn't like they're wrong or you're wrong. It felt really welcoming. I just really enjoyed it.Brad Crowell 2:19  I am curious. I didn't read the book yet, but I'm curious because the conversation, at least, was more about the consternation that has been created by the shift in female empowerment, and then the messaging not being. Lesley Logan 2:53  Delivered. Brad Crowell 2:54  Yeah, I'm just trying to pick the right words here, because the messaging for women has been A but the messaging for men has not changed or been impacted or shifted, and so now there is a disconnect happening. Lesley Logan 3:09  And well, let's just get into it in a second. Brad Crowell 3:11  We're gonna get into it, y'all. We're gonna get into it.Lesley Logan 3:11  Because I have some other thoughts to say on that. So, okay, today is February 13th. It's happy almost Valentine's Day, and it's Self-Love Day. You know what? There's a really awesome sweatshirt that I'm not gonna buy, but it's about like Cupid was in a pissed off mood. I feel like that's where everyone is in 2025 right now. And that was just a dark satire, and I loved it. But anyways, it's Self-Love Day. And you should love yourself before you can love other people, just kind of how it goes. Because if you've been in a crappy relationship, you probably could tell that you weren't really loving yourself very much. That's what the therapist would probably say. So, at any rate, Self-Love Day is an annual celebration to preach and understand the importance of self-love. I feel like that's using the word in a definition, but we're gonna let that go. Brad Crowell 3:53  Well, I decided to remedy that. So keep going. Lesley Logan 3:55  Self-Love is one of the most powerful forms of love. It is something that we have coded inside us. Proponents of self-love believe that it could strengthen a person's feeling of being loved. Is there an opponent to self-love? Who is telling people not to love themselves? Brad Crowell 4:13  Oh, maybe it's like the people who are like serve others. You're always last. Lesley Logan 4:17  Oh, yeah, yeah, uh-huh. Brad Crowell 4:19  They probably would argue that they're not arguing against self-love, but yeah. Lesley Logan 4:23  Yeah. The date coincides with Valentine's week, and is celebrated so that people can be strong enough to love themselves by the next day and not need a romantic partner on February 14th. Brad Crowell 4:33  It happens in a day, y'all. Just one day, you're good to go. Lesley Logan 4:35  So Brad wanted just fill us in (inaudible) yeah, Brad wanted to fill us in on what self-love is exactly. Thank you, Brad, why don't you step in here? Brad Crowell 4:44  That was a terrible question. Read it like a question. Lesley Logan 4:47  Hey, Brad. Brad Crowell 4:47  Hey. Lesley Logan 4:48  Want to fill us in on what self-love is exactly? Brad Crowell 4:51  Yes, I would be so excited about that. Self-love is the practice of valuing, caring for and respecting your self. It involves recognizing your worth and treating yourself with kindness, compassion and forgiveness. Self-love is not selfish or narcissistic. Rather, it is about fostering a healthy relationship with yourself which can positively impact your mental, emotional and physical well-being. Now. Lesley Logan 5:18  I have some key aspects of self-love. Brad Crowell 5:20  Yeah, I was gonna say, how do you practice self-love? Lesley Logan 5:23  So, one, is acceptance. Embracing who you are, including your strengths, flaws and imperfections. Brad Crowell 5:30  Yeah. Another is self-care. And I know we talk about this often on the pod, prioritizing yourself, physical, emotional, mental health, with activities like anything that actually lights you up. Could be sleeping an extra hour. It could be eating right. It could be getting your nails done. Lesley Logan 5:46  Also, setting boundaries is a key aspect of self-love. Protecting your energy and time by saying no to things that don't align with your values or well-being. Brad Crowell 5:53  Yeah, could be positive self-talk, replacing self-criticism with encouraging or kind thoughts. That's really hard to identify when you're berating yourself sometimes in the moment, but if you can catch yourself, great. Lesley Logan 6:03  Forgiveness, letting go of past mistakes and treating yourself with understanding. Brad Crowell 6:07  Yeah, that's a hard one. That's a hard one, especially with our generations of guilt that you just like slathered on children, and then we carry that into the rest of our lives. Forgiveness. Or if you did something in your past that you're shocked that you did. I have instances in my memory like that that I can't let go of, and that forgiveness has been hard to be like I made that decision. It wasn't a decision that I like or agree with today, and I'm moving past it. I am not that person now, but yeah, that forgiveness, that's tough. Lesley Logan 6:39  And gratitude, appreciating, oh, I skipped one. Brad Crowell 6:42  Yeah, growth. Being open to learning, improving or pursuing personal goals. We're all about that, of course. And then finally. Lesley Logan 6:47  Gratitude, appreciating your journey and the unique qualities that make you who you are. Practicing self-love allows you to build resilience, maintain healthy relationships and live in a more fulfilling life. It's an ongoing journey rather than destination. Brad Crowell 7:00  Yeah. Lesley Logan 7:01  So let us know how you're loving up on yourself today and every day. Brad Crowell 7:04  Yeah. How do you practice self-love? Lesley Logan 7:05  Yeah. We want to know. Send it to Be It Pod so we can share them with people who need ideas other than these brilliant ones. (inaudible) Brad Crowell 7:09  Yeah, and maybe it'll be on the wins.Lesley Logan 7:11  Yeah, we'd love that. Let's do that. We are almost to Cambodia again. So when this comes out, we're leaving, I think the Monday after this, so. Brad Crowell 7:11  It will be a couple of days, yes. Lesley Logan 7:13  Yeah, we're gonna go. So you should come with us on October, because it's kind of too late for you to come with us now, I'm just gonna be honest. Lesley Logan 7:22  Well, look, you are welcome to fly straight to Cambodia. Lesley Logan 7:31  Yeah, Brad will figure it out.Brad Crowell 7:32  (inaudible) We will make it work. However. Lesley Logan 7:34  October is great. Brad Crowell 7:35  More realistic. October this year, October 12th to 17th, we're gonna be back in Cambodia at our place. And by the way, we have been able to continue to work on our place, our property, the rooms, make it nicer, cooler, just more amazing. We've got some incredible partners. We have made some incredible adjustments to the trip that I can't be more excited about. We just got a new boat ride and the Lotus Garden. Lesley Logan 8:00  Oh my God, I saw a reel of the Lotus garden. And I was like, that's so beautiful. And I was like, oh wait, we do that every time. Oh, my God, but it's so funny, because I'm like, look how beautiful that is. I'm like, wait, that's where we go. That's what we do. Brad Crowell 8:11  Yeah, so we want you to come join us. Go to crowsnestretreats.com, crowsnestretreats.com. Lesley Logan 8:17  In March, we'll be home for just a little bit, and then we get to go to Denver. Brad and I gonna drive into the POT in Denver, and you can come. It's a great for Pilates instructors to get CECs and connect with other Pilates instructors. It's really, really a lot of fun. We'll have a booth there. Brad Crowell 8:32  Yeah, we'll be hanging out. Lesley will actually be teaching. I will be manning the booth and generally just kicking it. Yeah, that's gonna be super fun. We're really excited to be heading back to the Denver area. And then in April, mark your calendars y'all, April 27th to May 3rd, April 27th to May 3rd, we are doing. Lesley Logan 8:51  Spring training. Brad Crowell 8:52  Spring training. Lesley Logan 8:53  Pilates spring training. Who knew? Brad Crowell 8:54  What is that? Lesley Logan 8:55  So it's a play on baseball spring training, but nothing to do with it. We're not doing anything with baseball. Brad Crowell 9:03  It's gonna be a home run derby. Lesley Logan 9:04  Yeah, assuming something like that. So basically, years ago, everyone loved that week long Control Your Balance challenge, and so this is kind of like that, but something for everyone. So there's myself and the six other OPC teachers doing live classes on the mat reformer. There'll be a tower and a Wunda Chair class during the whole week around the same theme. So there'll be different levels, there's gonna be several classes at different time zones. So no matter where you live, you'll be able to attend live. And if you can't attend live, there'll be access to the replays for a limited time. It's essentially so you can experience OPC without having to commit to OPC just yet. So you get to experience what it's like to learn from different teachers on the same theme. You need to be on different pieces of equipment. You get to have that community aspect and that Q & A without you having to go into the app. So we're basically like bringing the experience to you.Brad Crowell 9:57  Awesome. I love that. If you are a Pilates business owner. That's anyone, if you are taking your own clients and getting paid by them directly, that will be small business owners, medium, even large business owners with multiple locations. I want you to come join me for a free webinar that I've been hosting called the Sudio Growth Accelerator. Don't be thrown off by that. If you don't have a brick and mortar, it's okay. I want you to come join me. It's the growth accelerator. Go to prfit.biz/accelerator. That's profit without the O dot biz slash accelerator, and we're going to be covering three big secrets that Lesley and I have learned over the last seven years of coaching more than 2500 businesses just like yours. We've boiled it down to these three big things, and then we get a chance to talk and Q & A and do all sorts of fun stuff. Because these concepts, we didn't know them when we were getting started, we just kind of had to figure them out. And then over time, having had thousands of conversations with people just like you, it's really helped us create a path that you can take. And I want to share all that with you. So come join me, prfit.biz/accelerator. And then finally.Lesley Logan 11:06  The last and final deck of the flashcard series is the Accessories Deck. And this is something that anyone can have, because more than 70% of it is things you can use around the house or make yourself. And so if you want to get this deck at 30% off, you have to be on the waitlist, because that's where the presale price is going to be, soon. Brad Crowell 11:26  And only, only there, we do not publicly post it. Lesley Logan 11:30  And so if you are on our regular email list, you are not going to hear about the presale there. If you are on the opc.me/events for spring training, you will not hear about the presale there. You have to be on the specific, you raised your hand. Brad Crowell 11:45  You did. Lesley Logan 11:45  For this waitlist. So, opc.me/flashcardwaitlist. That's we're you're going to get the updates when that presale happens. As of right now, of this recording, we don't have a date picked, but I feel like we're going to be able to do March. The team is working really swiftly, so we're already on the editing stage as we speak, and so we're past the longest part of it. So, it's coming up, it's coming up quick. Brad Crowell 12:08  It's gonna be good. Lesley Logan 12:09  Okay. Before we get into Kristal's episode, we have an audience question. Lesley Logan 12:13  Yeah, we sure do @goaltech_ontheroad asks on IG, hey, regarding the short box series on the reformer, should the legs touch the carrier or not? What differs? Lesley Logan 12:26  When we were on tour, Brad, when we're at Virginia Beach, we did a post about the short box and how to use your legs and all that stuff there, and so this question came through there, and I thought that was really interesting, because for the teachers and Pilates-lovers listening, we have to stop thinking that things are so black and white, like, should the legs touch or not touch? I don't know. How tall are you? What box are you on? What reformer are you using? Where is the strap connecting on the equipment to? All these things matter, because if you're on a really tall box and you're a really short person, chances are your legs are going to touch, right? If you are a really tall person on a short box, like me, my calves touch carriage. They just do. Now, do my feet touch the frame? No, but depending on the equipment the box, if the strap is on top of the frame versus underneath, there's so many different things. I can't answer that for you, because it's going to depend. And the difference is. Brad Crowell 12:26  It depends on the body. Lesley Logan 13:09  Depends on the body. And so. Brad Crowell 13:21  Depends on the box. Lesley Logan 13:23  What I would just say is, are you connected to your center? Are your legs connected to your center? Or are you working in halves? Are you sliding around a lot when you're doing the exercise? That tells me you're not set up correctly. So if you feel like when you round back you slouch, you are. If you round back and your legs go with you, you're sliding. If you come up and your legs go forward, you're sliding. So the legs should be still on all the short box exercises. When you round back and up, or flat back and up, they should be still and they you should feel the hamstrings, the glutes, inner thighs, the outer hips. And so I would focus on that. Then what's touching what. Brad Crowell 13:56  Yeah, I think it's good. That workshop, I remember it. And I think you're also, I think we were down in Huntington when you were talking about the. Lesley Logan 14:03  Huntsville. Brad Crowell 14:03  Huntsville, I mean, where the boxes were, like, people had them in the wrong position, and they were a little unbalanced. And then, the bodies were shorter and longer, and you were just talking about the general idea, the concept of it. Because, yeah, I mean, (inaudible). Lesley Logan 14:16  We actually did a YouTube, we actually just did a YouTube video about where does the box go? It was a week ago, Sunday. Well, now that this is airing, no, it was months ago, but, it was a month ago. But if you're subscribed to our YouTube channel, that's where I answer questions about Pilates-inspired, I go way deeper into them. Unless you're an OPC member, then we get to go deeper on you and your practice on what you need. So thank you for this question. I hope that that helps. And.Brad Crowell 14:40  Yeah, subscribe to our YouTube channel and stay in the loop on all that stuff, and stick around. We'll be right back. We're gonna dig into Kristal DeSantis and her book and all the things. It's gonna be great. Brad Crowell 14:52  Okay, now let's talk about Kristal DeSantis. She is the author of Strong: A Relationship Field Guide for the Modern Man, a groundbreaking resource aimed at bridging the gap in relationship dynamics by redefining healthy masculinity. With a passion for helping individuals and couples create deeper, more meaningful connections, Kristal brings a fresh, compassionate perspective into modern relationships. Lesley Logan 15:25  Yeah, picking up a (inaudible) conversation, you were clearly raised in a household where your mom was like, anything they can do I can do better, like, that's how your mom was raised. So you were, your mom was on the men's soccer team or whatever. So, you were raised in a household where your masculinity wasn't based off of you being better than your partner, and I think that makes a big difference where, in some households, what they're modeled is not that women can be independent and have their own things and have their own dreams and be in collaboration with their husband. I'm not saying every other male is like that. I'm saying I think a lot of males are raised like that, and I also know that there are a lot of women raised to be timid flowers that can break at any moment. So I think all these different things can be true, and we live in this really weird world where we get to see how you were raised made you an adult human being. And then also, I just want to give credit to there's a lot of parents out there who did the best they can, and their son still turned out to be some part of, dickhead, or their daughters turned out to be an asshole. So you could also do the best you can, and it didn't work out. But to what Kristal was saying that I really loved, in the podcast, she mentioned, it's not compromise, it's collaboration. And I thought her example, this is about marriage, I thought her, in relationships, I thought her example was actually really cool. She said, when artists, two artists come together to collaborate on a project or a song, they're always creating something better than when they were alone, because they're working together. So when Lady Gaga worked with that really famous blues person or soul whatever, I'm forgetting the name, and they're super famous, so don't attack, Brad's already looking it up, but people were like, oh my God, she's gonna ruin the music. Tony Bennett. She's gonna ruin the music. No, the music is amazing, and Tony Bennett's amazing, but what they created together was more amazing what the two of them could do by themselves. And so that's what a relationship is.Brad Crowell 17:11  Yeah. I think specifically with this point you were talking about how do you make a suggestion that somebody needs to go to therapy without it coming across as insensitive and commanding. She's clearly been through all of the conversations with people, and what she said is, like, how do you portray it in a way that doesn't sound like you're in trouble or you're going to see, you know, go sit in the corner. So I thought that was really good. And the way that she was talking about approaching it was, hey, together, we can do even bigger and better things. It's not a compromise, this is a collaboration. This isn't like an ultimatum or else kind of a thing, but I think that we will both be better if. Lesley Logan 17:48  Yeah, she also mentioned in the relationship thing, she said, it's multiplication, not addition. So be a whole person, do your work, and then find someone who's also whole, so you can create a whole, healthy relationship. And I thought that that was really cool, because my dad was really big on, like, no one completes you. You're not finding another half. You're a whole, right? Your life should be amazing, and then they just add to it. But I like how she takes it a step further, where it's, like, it's multiplication, actually it's compounding. When you're a whole person and they're a whole person, you compound, like, together, it's a compounding effect. And I thought that's really cool. Brad Crowell 18:21  Yeah, I dig that. I always said one plus one equals one, which isn't logical, you know, it's not a half plus a half equals one. It's one plus one equals one, you know? Lesley Logan 18:28  I'm glad it worked for you. Brad Crowell 18:30  Maybe it should have just been better if I did multiplication, because one times one is one. Lesley Logan 18:34  Yeah, yeah, yeah. Brad Crowell 18:36  How about that? Lesley Logan 18:37  Yeah. But also, like. Brad Crowell 18:38  So, it's not addition, it's multiplication. Lesley Logan 18:40  Yes, yes. Brad Crowell 18:41  I love that. That's a better way to say it. Lesley Logan 18:43  And we all need to stop watching the movie where he's like, you complete me. That is the.Brad Crowell 18:47  Yeah, yeah, I know you. You mentioned that in the episode. What connected with me a lot was when the two of you were talking about, and this is what I was alluding to at the beginning of this pod, when you are raised as an empowered women, the stories of how we were raised, what we were raised to go after and accomplish, or how we are told to get purpose, they're now two different paths, right? I'm a strong, empowered woman. I can do everything myself. I don't necessarily need a man, whereas the storyline for men has always been she had three P's, and I can't remember what it was, provide, protect and procreate. Those are the three P's that she said. It is possible for those provide, protect and procreate to still happen with the storyline of the strong, empowered woman, but the expectation is what's shifted, right, of like, how do I provide, what she must be in need in order for me to provide, how do I protect? She's got to be weak for me to be strong. How I procreate, well, you know, that better be a collaboration. Lesley Logan 19:50  But I also, that better be, I also do think that like, it requires both people to redefine what those definitions are. Brad Crowell 19:57  Yeah, when she started to talk about that, she's. Like, hey, look, women, Butespecially women who have been raised with this new philosophy, we still have to understand that there's now a disconnect in the language and in the mentality, and so that's where I thought it was good to have empathy and also to redefine for men, I think she's right on the money, you know?Lesley Logan 20:20  Yeah, I really, I really liked it because it wasn't about us as empowered women compromising and going, oh, okay, I'll do these things so that they can feel empowered. No, it's actually if provide isn't them making more money than you, can provide be that they actually make the meals and they take care of the household, they take care of the kids. Can that be providing? Brad Crowell 20:39  Yeah, or she her, example was creating a safe, emotional space to thrive. I think it also comes down to, y'all didn't talk about this, but there's a ego with like, machoism with men, and I feel like that's where things get confused, because you can still be going after the three P's, that protect, the provide, the procreate, and not have the machismo that goes along with that. Lesley Logan 20:39  Yeah. And also machis, I feel like that is where everyone is getting it wrong, like. Brad Crowell 21:12  Somehow that's become the definition of a man. Lesley Logan 21:14  It is. Brad Crowell 21:14  I disagree with that. Lesley Logan 21:15  It's so weird, because it's not how you are. It's not how any of the male friends you have in your life. Brad Crowell 21:19  There's nothing alpha about that. Lesley Logan 21:21  No, oh, no. Also, if you have to say you're alpha, you're not, just so we're clear. But then I follow several really amazing dudes online who are very healthy forms of masculinity to me. It's just really interesting, because I'm like, what is going on with this disconnect? And it's just, it's actually very sad. It's almost like people are, they're afraid if the world changes, then they won't have a place. So if there's not dangerous men out there, then there's no one for them to protect us from. Is what's going on on social media, right? And it's like, actually, we can get rid of dangerous men who can still protect us from scammers, like you, my husband, makes sure I have a VPN on wherever I go, I can translate that as protection, right? Like, it doesn't have to be that you beat someone up at a bar for looking at me the wrong way. You know what I mean? Like you can actually protect by just making sure your partner's passwords are all created on a way that can't be taken. There's so many different ways we can translate this, and I feel like people are unwilling to be creative, but also maybe they were never raised enough, way that there was a spectrum or a possibility. Yeah. And so really, how do we re-educate an entire generation of people? I don't know. But I think what we can do, as everyone listening to Kristal, is go, okay, who's in my world? Can I have this honest conversation with, with just like one person. I can't change neighbors. I don't know, but I can, you know, we can certainly talk to people in our life around (inaudible). Brad Crowell 22:47  Yeah, I was gonna suggest her book is maybe beginning to the education of a entire generation, both men and women. Lesley Logan 22:54  Yeah, let's get it in libraries, let's get it in Boy Scouts. Brad Crowell 22:57  Yeah, all right. Stick around. We'll be right back. We're gonna dig into those, be it action items we got with Kristal. Brad Crowell 23:04  All right, welcome back. So finally, let's talk about those Be It Action Items. What bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted action items can we take away from your convo with Kristal DeSantis? She talked about something called the Heartbeat Exercise, which it was for emotional connection. She also mentioned that people have done this when they're dating. She explained, it's three points. It's a point of this is a conversation that you would be having with someone, but it's three points, a point of pride, a point of pain and a point of pleasure. Imagine it as a heartbeat, the ups, the downs, and the points where you connect. How it works. Point of pride, ask your partner what they are proud of, and then validate it. A point of pain, hold space for their struggles without fixing. Point of pleasure, celebrate moments of joy or connection. Lesley Logan 23:49  I like this. Brad Crowell 23:50  Yeah, I think it's pretty cool. The Heartbeat Exercise. She said we normalize talking about pain, checking in about it, and also about pleasure. Like, did you discover something new during our last walk or experience together? So, you know, it helps with communication, it helps with talking about feelings, it helps with going deeper. So it's kind of cool little exercise. I think it's neat. Lesley Logan 24:11  Yeah, so I loved the four positions of conversation. Brad Crowell 24:15  Oh, yeah, this is neat. This is kind of cool.Lesley Logan 24:16  Yeah. So this is to improve communication. So there's four positions. Position one is listening. Brad Crowell 24:21  Yeah, this was the four positions of conversation. Lesley Logan 24:23  Yeah, yeah. So position one is listening. Brad Crowell 24:26  Okay. Lesley Logan 24:27  Position two is offering empathy. Brad Crowell 24:29  Okay. Lesley Logan 24:30  Position three is fixing. Brad Crowell 24:32  Okay, listening, offering empathy, fixing. Lesley Logan 24:35  Position four is debating. Brad Crowell 24:37  Debating. Lesley Logan 24:38  So the way you use this is, first of all, you both need to know what these positions are. And second, she said, even put it like on the fridge, where you can see it. And then whenever you feel like you're not in the same conversation, you can say, can I ask you to move to position one, which is, just listen to me. Brad Crowell 24:53  Yeah, I think one thing to point out, just to help, because people can't see this right now, she said traditionally, it's been understood that women are focused more on positions one and two, which are listening and offering empathy, while men are focused more on three and four, which are fixing and debating. She said, so we often are passing each other in this because we're on the wrong communication track or position. So, one and two, listening, offering empathy. Three and four are fixing and debating, yeah, and, and, bless you. Hey, if you could just shift back to position one instead of sneezing. That'd be great. No more position four. Lesley Logan 25:32  You've been too much in the position three right now. So I'm gonna ask you to offer some position two (inaudible).Brad Crowell 25:38  Okay, okay. So that's actually exactly how you use it. Lesley Logan 25:46  That's exactly, we just did it. We're excellent. I really like this because I think here's what ends up happening in a relationship, someone says to calm down, which is mistake number one, never tell someone to calm down unless you want to be murdered. It's like, the most annoying thing, just calm down. You can't tell someone you don't want them to do. You have to tell people what to do. Like, that's just the way that it works. It's like that in Pilates, by the way. So if you can get each person on the page of what these positions are, and you can say, hey, I feel like you're really in a position three, and I just really need to be in position one, and if you can just take a beat and then the other person can understand that you're not correcting them, you're asking for your needs to be met. Brad Crowell 26:27  Yeah, I feel like we need, like, live action stick figure body symbols for this. Like, what if position one was like, okay. Lesley Logan 26:33  Oh, you want to do it like, the baseball team? Brad Crowell 26:35  You are in a position. Lesley Logan 26:37  No.Brad Crowell 26:37  And I need you in a position. Lesley Logan 26:40  I think, I think, at best, hand signals, but maybe magnets. I don't know. Brad Crowell 26:45  If there's ever a reason to watch YouTube that would have been it. Lesley Logan 26:47  That would have been it, that they missed it. I'm Lesley Logan. Brad Crowell 26:50  And I'm Brad Crowell. Lesley Logan 26:51  Get Kristal DeSantis' book. It's great for both men and women to read, and then also check her out, because she and her husband actually do like couples retreats, and really do an amazing job working with couples. I also think it's important to state that you don't have to be in a state of need to go in and develop yourself as a couple. Brad Crowell 27:10  Sure.Lesley Logan 27:10  You can also do this when you're on upswing, there's always more to learn from each other, because we're always growing, right? So how are you gonna use these tips in your life? We want to know. Brad Crowell 27:17  We do. Lesley Logan 27:17  Tag the Be It Pod. Tag Kristal DeSantis. Since 2018 we've been providing the course and CECs, and now, this is not a course, it's a business. Learn more here. Questions I Answer in This Episode: Why type and timing of exercise matters more in menopause? [00:07:56] The normal curve of hormones during the day (and night) [00:08:48] How exercise affects hormones [00:10:06] Some examples of how exercise timing change has supported symptoms of menopause [00:15:38] First steps to try if you're a little “addicted” to your exercise [00:38:49] Let's review hormones related to exercise (in menopause or any stage): Cortisol is at its highest level at 8am and lowest at 2am when you're functioning optimally. During times of stress, whether chronic or acute cortisol levels spike (also increasing blood sugar). Insulin levels will increase if blood sugar rises, in order to lower blood sugar levels. By late afternoon, cortisol levels are low and not providing the energy we've enjoyed during the morning. So if we exercise, your body will convert another hormone into cortisol. In the evening, progesterone levels rise to help facilitate the chill and relaxation that helps provide a sound night sleep. During deep cycles of sleep, we release testosterone and growth hormones which improve muscle growth and repair. Why Doing Intense Exercise Early Improves Exercise Benefits in Menopause (H2) So you don't misinterpret, this isn't a suggestion for intense exercise every day. Doing intense exercise early improves exercise benefits in menopause. Also true, intense exercise late might interfere with exercise benefits in menopause. The two keys in the conversation on High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) are: cortisol during exercise cortisol after exercise What does cortisol do? Cortisol is responsible for physiological changes, such as the quick breakdown of fats and carbohydrates and a rise in blood sugar for immediate energy, and repressing the immune system to focus your energy on whatever you're doing at the moment. The blood sugar elevation you see on your Continuous Blood Glucose Monitor is normal and not a bad thing (provided you're recovering quickly from that spike that is caused by a legitimate need). The glucose has been released so it can be used: It's when you see your CGM continue to be elevated after your HIIT session, or crash, that you want to be concerned about. The quality of your recovery is important. In menopause, particularly perimenopause, recovery can be slowed or insufficient simply because of the changes in hormones. The same stressors in your life can potentially have a greater negative impact on your cortisol. Additionally, some of the keys to recovery are hard to get in midlife: Sleep Down time for Meditation and breath-slowing exercises Foam rolling or massage Decades of conditioning work against us getting adequate nutrition and hydration. If we still operate with “eat less, exercise more,” we generally don't have enough fuel to recover, and hydration could be impeded by low sodium intake. So many of us grew up with messaging about low salt, low sodium being the goal and have taken it so far that we're not actually hydrating by drinking water only, or worse, water with sugary substances. Exercise Early Improves Exercise Benefits in Menopause But Not If… (H2) One big mistake women make with HIIT is doing it too much or doing it after a workout that was lower intensity, assuming it's short and feeling you didn't work hard enough. We often assume feeling good after exercise is wrong. We've been conditioned by the media that it should be hard or hurt to be effective and should be under that threshold of cortisol elevation. There is a psychological effect from HIIT that differs from cardio activities. Studies on HIIT and high intensity weight training show these are safe and create positive feelings. The brain gets bathed in neurotransmitters after HIIT sessions that give a boost of creativity or problem solving. While you CAN do HIIT and strength training on the same day, it is not recommended daily. Hard exercise is more beneficial at your capacity. When you're in a period of extremely high stress (emotional and or physical) because of that overall load, the allostatic load interferes with recovery. During Perimenopause, the roller coaster of hormones can mean HIIT is not even ideal for you at all. If you do it and respond positively, 1-3 short sessions a week of not more than 45 minutes of HIIT is ideal. Beyond that point, injury rates go up significantly. Tendons can become more rigid and connective tissue is reduced thanks to lower estrogen. Awareness about this sweet spot of enough - not too much - is really important. I call it the MVP, MINIMUM VIABLE PHYSICAL activity to get results. Doing more gives you less ROI, it might tip your bucket so much that you are headed to breakdown instead of a more resilient body. During post menopause, the hormone roller coaster has generally calmed down and you can potentially include HIIT. You may be able to increase it up to 4 short sessions a week. First Steps to Improve Exercise Benefits in Menopause [H2] Skeptical or a creature of habit that it's hard to change even if you're not getting the results you want? If you say, your belly fat is not budging, in fact seems to get worse, here's my suggestion. Let's use the analogy of science by the Glucose Goddess (we'll link to that episode). If you have a plate of food and change nothing but the order you eat that food, you can change the impact of your blood glucose by up to 75%. Let's say you find it hard to give up your exercise habits. Change to exercise intensely only in the morning and light exercise or movement late in the day. Two things to keep in mind: Intensity comes from duration too. So hiking 2 or more hours may also spike your blood sugar. Lack of fuel before, during or after exercise (for recovery) will also increase the negative impact on your cortisol. There you have it, keys to improve the exercise benefits in menopause: Time intense exercise early in the day Even low to moderate intensity exercise can become intense if the cardiac drift is prolonged enough to elevate cortisol and it remain elevated, or if The habits before, during or after don't facilitate quick recover with the right fuel and rest to avoid muscle breakdown References: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25560699/ https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1728869X22000338 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9990535/ Resources: My Favorite CGM: https://www.flippingfifty.com/myglucose Flipping 50 Membership: https://www.flippingfifty.com/cafe Flipping 50 STRONGER 12-week program: https://www.flippingfifty.com/getstronger Other Episodes You Might Like: Cortisol Hormone: Don't let it derail your fat loss efforts: https://www.flippingfifty.com/cortisol-hormone/ Best HIIT Workouts for Women Over 50 | Fat Burning: https://www.flippingfifty.com/best-hiit-workouts/ The Blood Sugar Belly Fat Loss Connection for Women Over 40: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qnjwjT5-nc

Let's get started.  Lesley Logan 0:50  Welcome back to the Be It Till You See It interview recap where my co-host in life, Brad, and I are going to dig into the interesting convo I had with Tom Paladino in our last episode. Here's the deal. Normally, this is where I say you should go listen to that one and you should. Unfortunately, our guest passed away two weeks after we interviewed them. However, their family still does their work, and so we decided to continue to share his work and his words with you. So go listen, and if you are still interested in what they do, the family actually still does the scalar work, and you can actually see it on their Facebook group. All right. So anyways, go listen. And now, today, I mean, it's just so interesting, I feel like I just need to take a beat. Brad Crowell 1:32  Yeah. Lesley Logan 1:32  We found out yesterday, before we recorded this, I interviewed a guy last year who was dying of cancer. I knew he was gonna die and his episode came out, he was still alive. And I was like, oh, you're still here. But I, that is, you know, you all think about that. We just think we're gonna live forever. So, anyways, he passed away from a fall. Brad Crowell 1:51  Yeah, he fell and that was it. Lesley Logan 1:53  Yeah, the family decided to donate his organs, which is really cool. And if you haven't yet done that on your driver's license or your iPhone. You should do that because. Brad Crowell 2:02  I think I have (inaudible) driver's license. Lesley Logan 2:04  But didn't you just do it on my health app on my iPhone?Brad Crowell 2:06  Yeah, but that's just to tell anyone who picks up your phone that you are an organ donor. It doesn't that's not a legal declaration. You need to do it through your driver's license.Lesley Logan 2:15  Well, I currently don't even have my driver's license, so. Brad left it in LA. Ah.Brad Crowell 2:23  Sure. Lesley Logan 2:23  All right. Well, with that, well go do that. Go notify the powers that be or at least your family and friends who have you know medical decisions over you. Today is November 7th and it is Project Management Day. About this day. It's International Project Management Day is celebrated annually on the first Thursday of November, and is all about appreciating the important role project managers play on organizations. This year it falls on November 7th. Without project managers, the huge projects companies take on will be, frankly, impossible to achieve. LaVerne Johnson and Lori Milhaven of the International Institute for Learning (I.I.L.) created this day to give project managers the spotlight and appreciation they deserve. Shout out to Meridith who keeps us all on point and on time if you listen to the end credits and if you don't know that line, you don't listen to the end credits, we caught you. Brad Crowell 3:10  Yeah, that's right. Lesley Logan 3:10  And you might not know, might not know a project manager in your life, but you might be one, and so you might be the person who's managing all the projects and the day and today is your day.Brad Crowell 3:19  Today is your day. Congratulations. Lesley Logan 3:22  Yeah, to Meridith. Also, we should acknowledge that we are recording this before the election and this episode is coming out after the election, so we are either celebrating like crazy or crying in a dark room. We don't know. Brad Crowell 3:36  It's true. That's very true. Lesley Logan 3:38  I think if you listen to last week's episode with Tia Levings and our recap there, you know, where our heart (inaudible) and also just the fact that we want all of you to live your best life, that should just give it away of where our heart desires (inaudible). And so. Brad Crowell 3:51  And we have rights. Yeah. Lesley Logan 3:52  Yeah. Rights. You know, that thing. And that everyone has equal opportunities to living an amazing life. Brad Crowell 3:58  And voting. Lesley Logan 3:59  Yeah. But that thing, voting, so many ways. I'm just gonna be really honest, I think we take a moment. In this moment, I could be eating my words. I actually think she's gonna slay. Brad Crowell 4:09  It's gonna be close. Lesley Logan 4:10  Fine. Well, that's because we have to get rid of Electoral College, that racist bullshit. Because if we got rid of that, none of us would be taking Prilosec every day. I just feel like a lot of people are excited to vote for her.Brad Crowell 4:10  Yeah, I'm feeling cautiously optimistic. Yeah. Lesley Logan 4:14  Yeah, but obviously it's too late to tell you to go vote. Don't vote now, that would be wrong. You should have voted, and if you didn't, you need to make a voting plan and need a project manager in your life. Brad Crowell 4:33  That's right. Lesley Logan 4:33  To make that happen. Brad Crowell 4:34  It's true. It's very true. Lesley Logan 4:36  Okay, we just, like, literally, in recording this, we actually just got back from Cambodia, but we've been back for a while when you hear this, and we are going again in February, and now is the perfect time to snag your spot. You may be wanting to escape, or you might want to celebrate all the possible awesome, amazing (inaudible) that are going to happen in a new democracy here in this, we don't know. We don't, I don't know what's happening in the world right now. But either way, Cambodia is a great place to go to.Brad Crowell 5:04  We had a largest group we've ever taken this past trip. Lesley Logan 5:07  Oh, my God. It was amazing. Brad Crowell 5:08  Yeah, it was, we had 21 guests. It was incredible and.Lesley Logan 5:13  No. We had 20.Brad Crowell 5:15  23 of us total. My guess.Lesley Logan 5:16  Yes, okay, okay, okay. Brad Crowell 5:18  And so it was great. It went off without a hitch. We had a great team around us, and incredible food, incredible experiences, amazing temple touring. You know, I was really proud of everybody on our team, and also I was really excited for everyone who joined us, because we lucked out with some of the weather. Obviously, that's one factor we cannot control, and it was a little bit overcast, which was quite nice for when we were out, which is usually like the hot sun, we were in a little bit of shade, so that was great. But we would love for you to join us in February, because this is the kind of trip that is a marker in your life. It will be pre-Cambodia and post-Cambodia. Lesley Logan 6:04  Oh, yeah. Brad Crowell 6:05  And you will talk about this trip for the rest of your life. Lesley Logan 6:07  You all have to just watch Ainsley stand in the rain. And she did that. She came to Cambodia and knows she want to do that, because (inaudible) Cambodia. I do the same workshops, you know, that I've done before. And so I just said to her hey, like, how was that? Because you already did these a year ago. She's like oh, I was such a different person a year ago. It was, like, a whole new experience, right? And we already have people on that one who are coming on the next one, they're already, like, knowing, they know they're doing it again, because it is truly life changing, and it's really spectacular. You just get so good at being so present. You, like, you can only be when you're there, and so it's fabulous. So go to crowsnestretreats.com to snag your spot for February.Brad Crowell 6:45  Yeah, come join us. Lesley Logan 6:46  All right, I'm also getting ready to go to LA. I am gonna be camping at Brad's friend's house. I mean, they're my friends now. We've been married for nine years, so. Brad Crowell 6:54  It's true. They're your friends too. Camping is a funny way to say you're gonna use their guest bedroom. But, yeah, camping. Lesley Logan 7:01  Is it a guest bedroom, Brad? Brad Crowell 7:02  It's David's office. There's a pull-out couch. Lesley Logan 7:06  There's not a wall on one side. So I'm gonna call that glamping. But I'm doing that because I'm gonna do the photo shoot for the accessories deck in a couple of weeks, and that means we are getting that much closer to the accessories deck coming out the last deck, and this deck is gonna have the Sandbag, the Two by Four, the Toe Corrector, the push up devices, the Guillotine, the Ped-o-Pull, towel exercises, a pencil exercise, a marble exercise, tons of things you can make at home, only a few you'd actually have to buy. So majority of deck can be used by anybody. And it's really amazing for just supporting your practice if you've been wanting to do Pilates more often, but maybe you can't go to a studio that much like this deck is for you, so you want to be on the waitlist for that. But also the team and I are really trying to get this deck done, because we are tired of releasing decks in hurricane season, so I am on a mission to (inaudible). So instead of it being a late Q2 presale. It would be an early Q2 presale.  Brad Crowell 7:10  So that we can ship in the summer. Lesley Logan 8:04  Ship before hurricane season because, holy fucking moly, two hurricanes stop fulfillment wise back to back. Brad Crowell 8:12  Back to back. Oh and last year that happened too. Lesley Logan 8:15  Yeah, no, I'm done. We're done with that. We're not doing that anymore.Brad Crowell 8:18  This year was two, two in a row within one month, there was two (inaudible). Lesley Logan 8:22  Yeah, three decks got out in between hurricanes. It was, I mean, everyone's safe. I can't complain. Our decks are safe. We are very, very lucky. But also, I'll be honest with our listeners, some people aren't fucking patient, and the nasty emails of impatient people, I'm like, Helene has caught, all of our people had to evacuate, so they're not at work right now, and UPS is not delivering, so you just need to take a beat and just pray that everyone's safe, and then they'll be delivering shortly. But you know, some people just aren't patient. Most of our listeners are. Thank you so much. But anyways, so that's how I really feel about that opc.me/flashcardwaitlist gets you on the waitlist. Why do you wanna be on the waitlist? Because the waitlist gets the best sale price of the decks ever. Brad Crowell 9:07  It's the truth. (inaudible) Lesley Logan 9:08  So because you'll be the ones who are patiently waiting through hurricane season, okay, no, you won't. We're gonna, we're gonna beat it to it. Then, Brad, you want to take it over? Brad Crowell 9:16  Yeah, totally. Okay. We are back and I am back in my routine doing some webinars here, I'm really excited to be able to share the top three things that Lesley and I have learned after coaching more than 2000 businesses. These are the three things that move the needle on how do you grow your income in your studio, whether that is a home studio, a brick and mortar studio, whether you're renting from somebody and I want you to join me. It's a free webinar. It's called the Pilates Studio Growth Accelerator and it's only an hour. We shortened it. I was doing an hour and a half before, and I just realized it was too long. So come join me. Go to prfit.biz/accelerator that is profit without the O, prfit.biz/accelerator and get yourself signed up for free. Come join me, and I can't wait to dig into this topic with you and share these things that we've learned with you, and then, around the corner before we even realize it.Lesley Logan 10:13  Oh my gosh, it's a month from this release. Brad Crowell 10:16  It's so true. Lesley Logan 10:17  Like, the first stop is on the sixth of December. So it's in one month, the winter tour. You guys, you have to come.Brad Crowell 10:24  Yeah, come party with us. It's going to be so fun. Lesley Logan 10:27  We have 23 cities at the time we're recording this, seven cities are sold out of classes. Brad Crowell 10:31  I can't even believe it, literally, on the very, y'all are impressive, okay. On the very first day that we announced that there was tickets, three spots sold out within 24 hours? Lesley Logan 10:41  Three cities sold out in 24 hours. Yes, yes. And five within 48 and now we're at and then Boston sold out in 24 hours of it being announced. So you guys, I can't even list the cities without looking at it, so just go opc.me/tour (inaudible). We're starting in Sedona, we're doing Oklahoma City. And then I forget the third, is the New Orleans the third one? Brad Crowell 11:05  No, Memphis.Lesley Logan 11:06  Memphis. Brad Crowell 11:06  And then Huntsville. Lesley Logan 11:07  And then Huntsville, Alabama. Brad Crowell 11:09  Yeah, New Orleans is on the way home. Lesley Logan 11:10  Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. And then from Huntsville, Alabama, I. Brad Crowell 11:13  Atlanta, Greensboro, Washington DC, I think Pennsylvania, before (inaudible).Lesley Logan 11:18  And then Maine and then Boston, and then Cape. Brad Crowell 11:21  Cape Cod. Lesley Logan 11:22  When's Providence? Brad Crowell 11:23  After that. Lesley Logan 11:24  After that. Greenwich. Brad Crowell 11:25  Yes. Lesley Logan 11:26  Then we have Christmas and then, and then, from Christmas. Brad Crowell 11:30  We're going down, I think, I don't know if we have a stop in Delaware. I think we're just going to Delaware to see the fam. Lesley Logan 11:35  No stop in Delaware. Brad Crowell 11:36  And then we go down to South Carolina. Lesley Logan 11:38  Yeah, Charleston, Miami, Tampa, Pensacola. Brad Crowell 11:42  Yep, then Pensacola, New Orleans, Austin, Dallas, Lubbock. We have Lubbock.Lesley Logan 11:50  Yeah. They promised me a good latte. They said they have it. They said it's a college town.Brad Crowell 11:55  Lubbock and then. Lesley Logan 11:56  Phoenix. Brad Crowell 11:57  Yeah, then we're gonna go over to Phoenix. Lesley Logan 11:58  We just named them. Brad Crowell 11:59  I can't believe it. I think that's 23 (inaudible) we may have, I think we got them all. Lesley Logan 12:02  I hope we didn't miss any. (inaudible) Anyways, if we missed you, you must be sold out. Brad Crowell 12:07  It's gonna be amazing. We kick off the beginning of December, and we literally Lesley Logan 12:10  (inaudible) Virginia Beach. Brad Crowell 12:11  Oh, that's where it was. Virginia Beach. Okay. 34 days on the road y'all. 34 days on the road. So come hang out with us.Lesley Logan 12:20  We're gonna love each other more or. Just saying.Brad Crowell 12:24  Yeah, and we will be bringing our pups, two of them this time, obviously, but they'll be with us.Lesley Logan 12:28  Oh, I don't think we've told everyone we said goodbye to Gaia. I don't think, we did it online only, we didn't tell our listeners.Brad Crowell 12:35  Well, if you haven't heard it's been a month since us recording this, Gaia has taken the rainbow road. Lesley Logan 12:42  Yes, the rainbow bridge. Brad Crowell 12:44  It's been a challenging, one of the most challenging decisions that I've ever had to make in my life, but she's in a better place so. Lesley Logan 12:53  Yeah. And also, our boys are really quiet and you know that from listening to podcasts since she's fast there's no flapping of her collar or digging at the chair. Brad Crowell 13:06  Or scratching at the door or barking at nothing.Lesley Logan 13:11  We also have a little bit more time. It's really weird. I miss her, though. It's so I look at the art, the artist is fucking awesome for this tour. You guys. It's like a rap album. It's fucking off. Brad Crowell 13:20  Yeah, it's fun. Lesley Logan 13:21  And I actually had to look at it before she passed away, and I, because I had to approve it, and I didn't want you to see it, and I had to approve it without her on it. And I was like, so anyway, she's not on it, and people are like, oh, there's only two, but there's two boys, they can't wait to see you and it's gonna be a lot of fun. So opc.me/tour to get your tickets, workshops are all levels, so you don't have to be a teacher to get them. There are CECs if you are a teacher. Brad Crowell 13:48  Even the classes are also all levels. So yeah. Lesley Logan 13:49  Classes are all levels. So come, come, come, trust me. Brad Crowell 13:51  Even if you're brand new. Lesley Logan 13:53  Oh yeah. I have literally had a class of eight teachers and two first timers, and let me tell you, they slayed. So, me too. So go to opc.me/tour this is the winter tour, we talked about this before, it is awesome, because it's either the best excuse to get you away from your family during the holidays, or it allows you to bring your family with you and you have a shared experience. But I'll entertain them for a couple of hours. You don't have to do anything. So, yeah.Brad Crowell 14:17  Awesome. Well, before we move into talking about Tom and digging into scalar light, we had an audience question. So Theresa8294 on YouTube asks, hey, Lesley, on a Balanced Body Allegro 1 Tower, which springs are leg springs and which springs are arm springs? Here's what I have. I have the long yellow and purple and I have the shorter yellow and red.Lesley Logan 14:17  Yeah, I love this question. For any Balanced Body piece that's not Contrology, it's always these springs.Brad Crowell 14:33  And if you have no idea what any of this means, I mean. Lesley Logan 14:41  That means you're not doing Pilates. So here you go. So first of all, I just want you to know, on in the Cadillac tower flashcard deck we actually explain which springs to use and where to put them on your Tower or your Cadillac, so that you have the right angles, because the angles make all the difference, okay? So I literally give you the measurements. You can measure to make sure you're using the right hook or the, putting your sliding bar at the correct place. As far as the springs go, the purple springs are going to be your leg springs, and the long yellow I would use those as leg springs if you are like, if the purple springs feel like they're pushing you around, but ideally, you're at the purple springs because we need to help you get up and down off a toilet or off the ground. Okay, so I don't typically use the long yellow unless I have someone who's just really can't do the purple. The short yellow are great for arm springs. The red springs are used for your push through bar. Now, I'm gonna say all that, and I'm gonna say I really love the CenterLine® from Balanced Body. That line has gray springs, and I recommend getting two sets, one set for your rollback bar, one set for your arm spring, and ditch those short yellows. They're really light. So that's my opinion. And you can use our affiliate link to buy anything that you want over at Balanced Body and Contrology and that's what you do. So there you go.Brad Crowell 16:07  All right, now, let's talk about Tom Paladino. Tom was a passionate and positive scalar light researcher dedicated to making the world a better place, inspired by Nikola Tesla and guided by the legacy of Dr. T. Galen Hieronymus, he developed advanced scalar light instruments that enhanced health, balanced energy fields and neutralized over 400,000 pathogens Driven by his commitment to positive change, Tom used scalar energy to improve both the physical and emotional wellbeings of others. Yeah.Lesley Logan 16:37  Yeah. So, you guys, it would, you send, you can still email a picture of you or your loved ones, and then he, if you look in the YouTube video, you can see the tool that he uses behind him, and it, it's really quite, quite crazy, like he could just touch it, and it turned, I, this is where I'm gonna be really honest. This is where, you guys, I discovered that you could just do study hall in high school. I didn't do, I didn't do physics. I, also when quantum was added to the math class, I was out on that. So this is really over, over my educational head. Brad Crowell 17:14  I'm just gonna go with I'm 1000% skeptical on this entire thing. Lesley Logan 17:19  Right. But then I went on his Facebook page to look about his passing, and everybody is like, you healed this sister, you healed this person. Here's the thing, I also think a lot of people could say that about, you know, we've had Louise Swartswalter on and there's a couple other people that. Brad Crowell 17:35  Yeah, I, that doesn't, none of that, like, this to me, I can't understand. I struggle when people tell me that science hasn't caught up to this science yet. Lesley Logan 17:44  That's true. That is (inaudible).Brad Crowell 17:45  So you know, as soon as you go down that road. I'm like, is this a cult? You know? So. Lesley Logan 17:51  He, yeah, I agree. Because also now when people don't believe in science, I get a little skeptical of them, but he's not not believe in science. He just said science doesn't caught up to him. Brad Crowell 17:58  I know. So it's like walking a fine line, and there's definitely some logic behind it. But then there are some complete leaps and bounds of faith that you have to have that, for example, that your aura is associated with a photo. Lesley Logan 18:13  Right. That, that's true. Brad Crowell 18:14  I don't know if I can reconcile that. I don't understand how, I understand how a body, a physical being, has an aura because we emit energy. But when you take a photo of that body, then there's. Lesley Logan 18:25  I know, well I don't. Brad Crowell 18:26  Not sure I'm on the same page there.Lesley Logan 18:27  Isn't the Aborigines who are like against you taking a photo of them because they feel like it takes something of your soul. Here's the thing about faith, according to Tia Levings that's what you need for a lot of things. And so if this sounds cool to you, that's cool to me. If you're skeptical, it's also okay. I think it's okay. I think there's nothing wrong with being skeptical at somebody. But here's the deal, so he says quantum healing is not physical.Brad Crowell 18:27  Well, before we go even into that, I think we can say that he 1000% believed in what he did that was very clear, and he also was.Lesley Logan 18:43  There's something very inspiring about that. Brad Crowell 19:00  And he also was very positive and came across very kind. So I'm intrigued by the claims that he was making, because I felt like, if it's reality, then it's amazing.Lesley Logan 19:12  Right. I agree it would be really, really cool if it works, and also if it and for the people who had to work for like that, I don't want to take that away from them. So at any rate, I had talked to him about how he does his day and what's going on, because he claims, like, I've never been sick. I'm never on any medication. And here's the thing, he didn't die from an illness. He died from a fall. This is the, that's like, the fucking ironic, you know? So that's when you're like, wow, I don't know if it's your turn, I guess, but it's, I find it really fascinating. So yes, you send your, you email them your picture, and you can email, you told me, I can email a picture of Gaia. I didn't, because I knew what we're doing, and I was like, we can save the prayer of something we have to make a decision on. But so many people on that Facebook page have sent pictures and really credit what he does as work that has helped people in their lives or themselves with their health stuff. So I think that's really cool. He also really credits his wife Nita, who, I read her post about their love and oh my god, so beautiful that. Anyways, she mandated his diet, and he didn't overeat, and he exercised daily, and he was happy and doctors said he was also very healthy. So, you know, I will say, I think several times I try to figure out what it was, and I really had a hard time getting out what the scalar light is, scalar energy is. But I'll say, for a lot of these, would you call it, not worldly, but these other type of exercises out there, I still feel like I don't really get great answers out of I don't feel like the definitions are there, and maybe because it's still being defined. So I really can't give a better description, unless you have a better description of what I listened to. Brad Crowell 20:54  No. I mean, I think it's a conversation worth exploring and understand, like, beginning to understand. Lesley Logan 21:00  Well, I kind of, like, if it really does work, it would be really cool if science would just test it out. That could be really cool. And so his family is still doing it, so maybe that could be an option. Brad Crowell 21:09  Yeah. Well, he talked about quantum healing, not being physical healing. And I don't really understand that, but he said the energy from the sun. Lesley Logan 21:16  Well, I think it means he's not touching you, so he's praying over your picture, but he's not physically touching you. You don't have to go to him. That's the thing that's actually really accessible about it, is that you don't have to go to a doctor if you have a rare cancer and you are going to go to the one doctor who does it, you have to fly there. He doesn't have, that's how I took the physical. Brad Crowell 21:35  Yeah, okay, that actually makes sense. But he was talking about the energy, effectively, the machine he built is harnessing energy from the sun, and then he's passing your photo through the fields that are being collected from this machine that he built. And, yeah. Lesley Logan 21:53  Yeah. Watch the YouTube. Go see it. Brad Crowell 21:55  Yeah. Lesley Logan 21:56  He showed me. Brad Crowell 21:57  He did. I saw it. I saw it.Lesley Logan 22:00  Well, what did you like? Let's move on to what you like.Brad Crowell 22:02  I like that you kept asking him questions about him instead of questions about what he does. Lesley Logan 22:08  I just, well, I think also I really like to know the people behind the things. I find that helps me understand especially when I'm like, I couldn't wrap my head around it. And so then I was like, okay, well, I can't wrap my head around it, so let me get to know the person who's behind it, because I also thought Pilates was shit, and then I really liked it, and then people who doubt what Pilates is but they really like me. So I feel like I can't stand here and be too skeptical of something, because there's plenty of people who are very skeptical at what I do, and there's not a lot of scientific studies about what Pilates does because the ones that are out there, they're doing exercises that I don't even teach. So there's actually no scientific study on exactly what I do, saying the claims that I have. So, you know.Brad Crowell 22:50  Yeah, I get that, but there's also a lot of logic involved in Pilates. Look, you asked him about passion. And he said passion is the reason why people get up, why they go to school, why they work, why they have kids, why they get married, etc. And he really encouraged people to believe in God, believe in yourself, to have goals and have objectives. You kind of asked him about skeptics of his work, and he said, with absolute confidence, that you cannot listen to the negativity of the unbelievers effectively. He said he experiences comments like that all the time about his work, but he never lost sleep over them. And I felt like that was actually really. Lesley Logan 22:51  We all learned something from that. Brad Crowell 22:52  That's important. It really is, you know, because there will always be people who are going to derail you or try to derail you, whether or not they're being intentionally malicious or ignorantly maligning, you know, or dis-railing you, there are people who are going to take you off the path, right? And that could be people who love and support you, but are afraid of you, and they're projecting their own fear into this situation, right? And they're telling you to be careful and be cautious and don't do the thing because, or maybe it's like your parents who were like, you want to be an artist, you got to go get a real job, right? So it's 100% what he's saying. I believe that. If you subscribe to what the negative people are going to say, or people who are projecting that fear on to the thing that you're chasing that will derail you totally. Ask any professional athlete, did they have to be single-minded and put the blinders on and not listen to the community they grew up in, or the people that are in their household, or the whatever. I'm sure they would agree with this as well.Lesley Logan 24:39  Yeah, yeah. I think so. I think we get all, take that as a great takeaway. You've got to have passion for what you're doing. Otherwise, like, what are what are we doing?Brad Crowell 24:47  Yeah.Lesley Logan 24:48  And if you don't have passion, because you like, I am a trash collector. I make great money, and it pays my bills, take care of my kids, I have health insurance, I can have this house on my head, then be passionate about your kids, or be passionate about a hobby you have. It's okay to just do a job, but we all have to have some passion in life, otherwise we're kind of just going through the motions. And so if you haven't found something you're passionate about, maybe you're passionate about donating your time to the animals and walking foster care dogs or something like that. I promise you, it gives you a lot of life. And I will say Tom is very vibrant and energetic. He was so passionate. It was both times I've talked to him, because I talked to him before we got him on the pod, I was like, I don't really get this, but he really cares.Brad Crowell 25:28  Yeah. And he said, if you follow your purpose in life, that's it, remove all the extraneous noise. So yeah. In that sense, he definitely took his own advice, and I'm excited. I think that's positive. I think that's helpful.Lesley Logan 25:43  You guys, this is two weeks before he passed away. Like what great advice that we could all learn from even if we don't use scalar energy.Brad Crowell 25:50  Yeah. All right, stick around. We'll be right back. Brad Crowell 25:53  All right. So finally, let's talk about those, be it action items, what bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted action items can we take away from your convo with Tom Paladino? He said you have to be happy in life. If you want to change your life, you need to take gradual steps, one goal a day, one small goal a day. Imagine if you have only one goal, just one improvement a day, and only do that Monday through Friday, that's 200 if you only do those small improvements Monday through Friday, you're at 200 improvements a year or in business, whether that's in your home life, your family life, or your social life. And he said, imagine 8 billion people experiencing benefits every single day around the world, if we were focusing on progress, on one goal a day. And he said, that's what the world is missing. Now we need to stop fighting each other, and we need to have progress. We need to make progress. Lesley Logan 26:45  I love all of this. I just told our agency members during their breath work session at the end, I was like, you're all doing too much. If you just did one thing each day the rest of the year, that'd be on the day that we're recording this. I mean, 92 things, right? That was October 1st and December 31st, like, 92 things. It's a ton of things. That is so many things. I bet you don't even have 92 things on your to do list. We just cleared it, but you're trying to do 17 things in one day. That's why you're fucking it up. And so I really like that. I like that action item. Brad Crowell 27:14  Yeah, I think that's, an incredible addition to it is, you know, we pile so much on our plates, and we've got like 10 projects we've got to start or do or tackle, or do finish or whatever. And what if we just did one of them, just did one and got to the point where it was finished and we start the next one, we'll probably actually finish all 10 projects faster than if we try to juggle them all at the same time. Lesley Logan 27:39  Is that, are you looking in the mirror when you say that? Brad Crowell 27:42  Yeah, I was looking right past myself.Lesley Logan 27:44  Someone has a Be It Action Item for themselves. Okay, my turn. He said change for the better. In order to make an improvement, we have to change. If things aren't working out, we have to change. Take small steps towards improvement even if it means doing something new or unfamiliar. And we just released an episode literally October 22nd, Lisa Schlosberg said, "You are uncomfortable, not unsafe." So when you are making these different changes and you're doing something that's new or unfamiliar, it can make you uncomfortable, but you're not unsafe. And when you do those things, you change for the better. So I'm like adding a little of this and a little of this, and I'm making it all up. I really love it. Lesley Logan 28:25  So anyways, I think fascinating conversation, very interesting. If you try it out, let us know how it goes. To Tom's family, who's working on it, I'm really sorry, because he was so passionate. What kind of amazing energy and positive energy to be around all the time. That is a loss. And he cared so much for so many. He is praying for so many people. So I know that is never gonna get easy to have said goodbye to him so soon or ever. But Tom, thanks for sharing your energy and passion with us, and I think we all can like have a little takeaway of something you said. So, I'm Lesley Logan. Brad Crowell 29:00  And I'm Brad Crowell. Lesley Logan 29:01  Thank you so much for listening to our episodes. We love you. We have something really fun and exciting coming up with the December episode. So stay tuned. And I find that so cool. Lesley Logan 0:10  Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. Let's get started. Lesley Logan 0:52  Welcome back to the be it till you see it. Interview recap where my co host in life, Brad and I are going to dig into the revelatory convo I have with Tia Levings in our last episode. If you haven't listened to that one, you have missed the fuck out. It's so good. I clearly can be. It's pretty clear and you can tell when I loved an episode. I love this guest so fucking much. I don't want to scare her off, because I want to be her best friend, but in a non-culty way, Tia. But you should listen to it. And you can listen this one first and then listen that one. But it's really great. We do get into politics and you want to know what? I don't care. If you're mad at me for talking about how to save your right to be a human in this country, then I have no apologies, because it is near and dear to my heart that we protect people's rights. I have been to countries where you do not have rights and you have no idea what that looks like and how scary that is. And so, no.Brad Crowell 1:45  Yeah, no, it's been pretty crazy. So yeah, we are going to get into that a little bit. But before we do. Lesley Logan 1:50  We're not telling you how to vote, by the way. We're just telling you the facts that are laid out before you. But Brad's smirking. You're not going to say, you're not going to, you're not going to say anything? Brad Crowell 1:58  No, we're gonna get into it later. So. Lesley Logan 2:00  All right, well, first, it is, today is October 31st 2024, it is Halloween. You are probably familiar with it, but there are some interesting history behind I'm sure there's some really good history. Brad Crowell 2:11  Pagan and then Catholics were like, we hate pagan. So we're gonna make a (inaudible)Lesley Logan 2:16  Like, how did we get her recap on Halloween? It's a (inaudible) culture and anyways, anyways, I swear, I swear to you, when I was like, team, I want this out before the election. This was the only day. But we thought we'd share something actually really cool for you, and hope this doesn't get you teepeed or is that what you call it when they throw toilet paper on your house? Brad Crowell 2:36  Yeah, that's what they call. That's what they say. Lesley Logan 2:39  That's what they call. I'm sure they call it something else now. I'm sure it's called like, skippity or something. We thought we'd share about a really fun alternative to giving candy to kids called books for treats. So today is Books For Treats Day. Books For Treats Day was born from the belief that books are more valuable treat than candy on Halloween. Books are more beneficial to children than candies because they nourish the mind and equip the child to understand life better. Some naysayers tell Rebecca that she is stealing the fun of Halloween and ruining kids' Halloween. Rebecca clearly created. Brad Crowell 3:06  She created this day. I forgot to say that part. Lesley Logan 3:08  Yeah. We're gonna get to her in a second. In fact, the contrary is true. Kids love books. Since they get to choose their book from the age appropriate box, they're excited to have a treat that lasts more than a few seconds. I commonly hear we made sure to come to the book lady's house. Rebecca Morgan is the author of 25 books, two of which have sold over 200,000 each. She's appeared on Oprah, 60 Minutes, NPR, USA Today and international media. She's a speaker and management consultant and runs three businesses and this nonprofit. Learn more about Books For Treats at booksfortreats.org. We should just have her on the show. And also, I forget, but it's, sometime in this month, it might have been last Friday, we're recording this in the past for the future, but it is like National Reading Day or something like that. And we were going, we actually, from a different Rebecca as a guest, started donating to the Little Readers Big Change organization to help get books into K through 12 schools that have low funding. And so I'm all about this. If you get teepeed, I'm sorry. But also, like, put some (inaudible). Brad Crowell 4:09  I mean, you will, you'll get teepeed by, like, the 13-year-olds who are like, ew books. Lesley Logan 4:14  But you want to know something? You might, oh, my God, that you might live in a state where some of those books have been not accessible at their school and you could be that book lady. We're going to that book lady's house. We'll get the other books. Anyways, we just got back from Cambodia retreat. Brad Crowell 4:28  We did. We just spent 10 days in Cambodia with the largest group we've ever taken. It was amazing. Lesley Logan 4:34  The retreats only, like six days, guys. We just were there for. Brad Crowell 4:37  Yeah, we get there early so that we could prep everything and make sure everything is going to go smoothly. And then after that, we took a little breather. We actually went to Thailand. And we explored parts of Thailand that we'd never been to. Lesley Logan 4:48  We went to Northern, I know it sounds like, oh, a beach. And I was like, opposite. Brad Crowell 4:52  Jungle. Lesley Logan 4:52  Lots of jungle, lots of really cool temples. Just, so cool.  Brad Crowell 4:56  Yeah. If you want to see something that is mind blowingly cool, go onto Google and search for northern Thailand, the White Temple. Lesley Logan 5:05  It looks like it should have a movie around it with magic. Brad Crowell 5:09  They have a White Temple, a Black Temple, Blue Temple, and I think there's a Red Temple, too. Anyway, it really is unbelievable. It's like this massive art piece. It's incredible. Like, jaw-droppingly cool. It's like, when I heard about it and I saw the photos, was like, we gotta go. Lesley Logan 5:24  I understand that we are talking about a temple on this episode, but it's a different kind of temple. And we, like you said, look at it for the art in it and the history of it, and it's mind blowing. Brad Crowell 5:34  Well, it was created by an artist. Lesley Logan 5:35  Yeah, it's beautiful. So come to February's retreat, you won't see the White Temple, Black Temple or Blue Temple, but you will see the eighth wonder of the world. Brad Crowell 5:42  You will see the eighth wonder of the world, which is another temple. It's actually the largest religious structure in the entire planet. How about that? Lesley Logan 5:51  You wanna know why you shouldn't say no to Cambodia? Because when you come to Cambodia, you will learn about the temples, and you'll see some were Hindu, and then some were Buddhist, and then some were Hindu and some were Buddhist. Now they just celebrate all of it. So they have a lot of fucking holidays. Brad Crowell 6:03  Yeah, that's a lot of holidays. Lesley Logan 6:03  But talk about this compromise. They didn't go, oh, you all have to be Buddhist now. They are a Buddhist, Hindu. Brad Crowell 6:08  Well, they did that a bunch of times. Yeah, they did that. They did war back and forth. And, different kings would change different things. Lesley Logan 6:14  And then they just combined them all. Brad Crowell 6:15  Yes. It's kind of a mash up now. Lesley Logan 6:16  Yeah, okay, I am going to be. Brad Crowell 6:18  Oh, go to crowsnestretreats.com to join us, crowsnestretreats.com. And then, now that we're back. Lesley Logan 6:24  We're really diving in. My team is making sure I stay on the fucking track with this last deck. Brad Crowell 6:32  We are.Lesley Logan 6:32  We are making sure that I do not go two months past schedule for the fifth time I'm doing it already. Right now, on this moment, I should have already written 50 cards and 50 blogs. Brad Crowell 6:43  Great. Lesley Logan 6:43  That's the goal. By this, by the time this drops, maybe more. And there's 83 to go. 83 total. So the accessories deck is going to have the two by four, sandbag, toe corrector. Brad Crowell 6:55  If you're wondering what an accessories deck is, this is Pilates flash cards we've been doing. Lesley Logan 6:59  Yeah. Thanks for making it, you know, specific. Brad Crowell 7:01  Yeah, we got the sixth deck in the series, the accessories deck. So it's all the other things. And here's the thing, I get so many questions about, should I, which Reformer should I buy that could fit under a couch? You guys, there are so many pieces of Pilates, apparati, apparatus, apparatuses that you that don't take much space and you can make it home. And I bet you can say all three of those, because I just watched a whole reel about a guy talking about how platypus has four different plurals. I'm pretty sure it's just apparatuses. (inaudible) A plural of the word apparatus can either be apparatus or apparatuses. Lesley Logan 7:37  So it has two, I think apparatus. Anyways. Brad Crowell 7:40  I liked apparati, though. Lesley Logan 7:41  I know apparati, it's like a, I don't know it's a cacti, at any rate, you guys, my goal is that more than half of this deck is hand-makeable. Brad Crowell 7:50  Hand-makeable. You mean the the equipment being used in the deck? Yep. Lesley Logan 7:56  Thank you again. He's just coming in here to translate what I'm saying, guys. We were on vacation and so I'm clearly already there the time that we're recording this. Okay, Brad, do you have any Accelerators left of this year? Brad Crowell 8:10  Yes, yes. Actually, if you are a fitness business owner and you are stuck with money income, you keep hitting the same marks every year. You're not growing the way that you need to grow to be able to actually pay yourself the money that you want to make, or put money aside because you want to retire one day, then you should come join me on this free webinar. It's called the Pilates Studio Growth Accelerator, and in there, Lesley and I have been coaching for years and years and years, and I'm going to be covering the three biggest secrets that we have learned, we have gleaned, we have come alongside these businesses to go through the trenches of, how do we make adjustments with them? Create that plan with them that they can go change their lives. And we're going to share those. I am going to share those three big secrets with you on this webinar. It is totally free, so you should absolutely join me. Go to prfit.biz/accelerator. That's profit without the O dot biz slash accelerator. And sign up. Lesley Logan 9:07  And finally, we are, as you can hear, are clearly not staying in Vegas for very long. Because not only am I going to LA but then we're gonna come back and a few days later, after Thanksgiving, specifically, which my dad is now trying to get us snow camping on so we gotta figure that out. Brad Crowell 9:20  We'll see. Lesley Logan 9:21  He (inaudible) guys. So we can talk about it there. But we are going on tour, and you can buy tickets already. So. Brad Crowell 9:26  Yeah, we're hitting the road again, y'all.Lesley Logan 9:27  I'm being it till you see it on these tour tickets. They are out now. Brad Crowell 9:30  I'm so excited. Oh yeah, we, the tickets opened up in beginning of October. So, you know, things have been, uh, cruising here, but we are coming to 23 different cities. We're going to be doing the South, I guess southern central I don't know we're going to take Route 40 across. So if you're anywhere near Route 40, when we hit Greensboro, North Carolina, we're to go all the way up to Maine and then down to Miami, and then back through Texas, hitting Phoenix, all the way back home. So if any of that sounds anywhere remotely close to where you're going to be for the holidays, or any time of December, or if you live near there, come hang out with us. Lesley Logan 10:00  It is so much fun. Brad Crowell 10:01  It's a blast. It's amazing.Lesley Logan 10:03  It's so much fun. Balanced Body is sponsoring us again. We'll have Contrology equipment for you to try. There's prizes, lots of prizes. So it's gonna be really, really grand. Brad Crowell 10:12  Lots of swag. Plus, if you're a teacher, you can get CECs on the workshops. So, anyways. Lesley Logan 10:12  And the workshops are for every level. You don't have to be a teacher. Brad Crowell 10:14  You don't have to be a teacher but if you need that stuff we're working that it in. Lesley Logan 10:22  I've just created a new workshop, I've created a new workshop for this tour. And the working title is rolling with the mat homies. So mat is in parentheses because it's all about the transitions, and I think it might be too cute, and so I told Meredith to fix it. (inaudible) Well, I really like it. It's a working title.Brad Crowell 10:39  It is a working title. Well anyway, go to opc.me/tour opc.me/tour and join us while we are on the road. We really do want to hang and also introduce our pups to you. They love meeting you, too. So before we actually dive in here, I swear we are going to talk about Tia Levings and we are going to talk about.Lesley Logan 11:00  (inaudible) But we have a question. Brad Crowell 11:01  Well, she said a, she said a word that I thought was really intriguing. She said she escaped. Okay, so if that is something that is intriguing to you, stick around. We're going to talk about her. But first we got this audience question. So Donna Lombardo on IG asked, Hey, I just ordered a workshop from OPC, which is onlinepilatesclasses.com and I would like to do the teaser, but I'm having a hard time finding this the correct place on my sitz bones to do the teaser. Where should I start?Lesley Logan 11:28  Yeah, so, Donna, you should really focus on your rolling like a ball, because the teaser is the same position on the sitz bones. It's actually behind the sitz bones as you're rolling like a ball. And in fact, you can roll like a ball and land in a teaser. And if you can't, if you lose your legs, or you fall back, or it just looks like (inaudible), is what Jake Bryant would say, (inaudible). So it looks like that. Brad Crowell 11:51  It is what he used to say. Lesley Logan 11:51  He used to say that a lot of times to me. Then you're in the wrong spot, and also you're not ready for it yet. So rolling like a ball is your friend. Double Leg Stretch is your friend because it's going to help you learn how to reach your arms and legs away from your center. And I also would recommend your single leg kick and double leg kick on the mat, because it's going to stretch your hip flexors out and create more strength in your hamstrings and your butt. Basically, the rest of the mat is going to be your friend. And anything that seems harder than teaser, or as hard as teaser, you're just going to pull out, so if you have the flashcard deck, you'll just pull out all the ones that look like a teaser and are towards the end. Pull them out you're not ready for them yet. And then also, you better love your roll up. And if your legs are coming up in your roll up or you come up like a vampire. Brad Crowell 12:36  Your roll up is critical. Lesley Logan 12:38  And if you're an OPC member, then you can actually show me what your version of the teaser is, and I can and the other teachers can provide some support around how close you are, how far away you are. Sometimes we're just talking about different exercises altogether. So maybe this is not even what you're asking for. It's the best way for us to give personalized and tailored feedback, because I can't give you more than this without seeing you, and so it's general, but if I saw you and I could see, oh, the reason why you can't find this by your sitz bones is because your lower back is tight. That's a whole different thing, versus oh, your core is weak, right? Or it's both. Anyways, so go to (inaudible) opc.me/40, opc.me/40 will get you 40 days of OPC for $40 and during that time, you can submit a video of you doing the teaser. Brad Crowell 13:24  Yeah, come join us. Lesley Logan 13:25  Send your questions in I love answering them. We want, doesn't have to be Pilates questions or business questions. They can be life questions (inaudible and I have great advice. Brad Crowell 13:34  Yeah, we do. That's true. Just text us at 310-905-5534, or hit us up on the Instagram or leave a YouTube comment or whatever. You know, just reach out. We will pretty much get it all. Yeah. So great question. Donna, thanks for asking that. Stick around. We are gonna dig into Tia Levings and how she escaped from Christian fundamentalism when we get back. Brad Crowell 13:58  Okay, welcome back. Now, let's talk about Tia Levings. Tia Levings is a New York Times bestselling author of A Well-Trained Wife. It is her memoir of escaping from Christian patriarchy and fundamentalism. TiA is dedicated to shedding light on the impacts of religious fundamentalism and helping others break free from it and its political agenda through her social media platform and her books, she's actually writing another book right now on how she, once she escaped, how did she change? Because it took her 10 years.Lesley Logan 14:30  I know, and I think it's so good for the people who've like, it's a special book for people who've gone through that. Brad Crowell 14:36  Yeah, it took her 10 years to be able to even share her story. Like, it was fascinating. She said that she.Lesley Logan 14:41  Tried to write it in different ways. Brad Crowell 14:42  Yeah, she wrote it as a novel first, and then she wrote it under a different name, and she said it was all wrong. And then finally, through many years of therapy and life and raising kids and stuff, she was like, I gotta tell it as me. Lesley Logan 14:53  I don't remember if it was in our interview, but I listened to her on an interview where she said she has healed so much from it. When she did her audio of her own book, she was able to do it. It did not affect her in that way. But the people in the sound booth were hearing it for the first time, and they were in tears, because they, it's it's dark, it's really intense, you guys.Brad Crowell 15:14  I mean, why don't you give us just a little bit of a synopsis of what this book is, A Well-Trained Wife and like, what her background is here, because I think that will be impactful. Lesley Logan 15:23  Her parents were not super religious. And I wanted to say it before I get into this, somebody is gonna say not all Christians, just like someone post something like, not all men, guess what? Then stand the fuck up and say, hey, I'm not like that, and that's wrong. You gotta call this stuff out, otherwise you get lumped into it. So I'm just going to say that, because you're correct. It's not all Christians. This is a special type of it. However. Brad Crowell 15:45  She mentioned that, in fact, on the interview, and she said, yeah, story of my life, that it's not all Christians, but somehow I was involved in this (inaudible) fundamentals.Lesley Logan 15:55  She was also involved in multiple churches. So here's the other thing. So she wasn't raised in a church in her early childhood. But they moved to Florida, and her parents joined a church, and one of those big mega churches, because it was like something to make friends. I know a lot of my friends were like, oh, I think I'm gonna go to church. My kids have this moral upbringing. The problem is, when she went there, the way that she interpreted the rapture is like she was going to be left behind. And so she had this, we talked about this with her sister, where she was in her life, and the way that she was born into this world, she took it as truly real, and she had this such a fear that she was going to be left behind and someone was going to die, and all these things. And so she was having stomach ache, but she just kept forcing herself to go. And then also all of her friends were like, oh, you shouldn't date. It's such, it's gonna break your heart. And by the way, my parents were never this strict, but they definitely dabbled in like, oh, there's some, really, some Christian churches. They pick the husbands for them. And I'm like, that's an arranged marriage. That's not okay with me. But this happens more than you think. So anyways, she marries a man who is not awesome and but she is marrying a Christian man, and she's doing the thing that she's supposed to do because a church told her to her job is to make babies.Brad Crowell 17:09  And he's very controlling. Lesley Logan 17:10  And he's very controlling, and he's very abusive. And when she talks about the abuse she has, it is when they go from different church to different church that abuse turns into wife spanking. They literally call it that. It is, so it's basically a different word for abuse. You're abusing your wife. And as they switch from church to church, they go into a Calvinist Church, which is super dark, and they believe the kids are born with sin. And so anyways, there is a time when another wife, kind of like, breaks the fourth wall and is like, do not go off the grid because they were about to switch churches and go or move towns, which would mean they would go to a different church with the same (inaudible).Brad Crowell 17:45  This is after she was married, right? So she's married, she's in this really bad relationship, and the guys like, we're moving off the grid. We're getting out of here.Lesley Logan 17:52  Yeah. So so it slowly went that way after one church, the next church, and the more controlling the churches were, the more he actually did well. But she obviously was bearing the brunt of it. Her kids were bearing the brunt of it. There was abuse in the household, and you'll have to read the book to hear kind of why she left, and how she left, but she, but it is, I hope they make a movie about it, because it is truly empowering for those women that you know who are what people don't understand is coercive control and being abused doesn't happen overnight. It happens slowly, and there's a lot to lose because you're isolated, and the more isolated you are, the harder it is. And the other thing is, is that you start to then feel embarrassed, because multiple times, her parents are like, are you sure you want to do this? Are you sure you want to do this? And like, soBrad Crowell 18:39  Then you can't go back or you feel like you can't go back. And like. Lesley Logan 18:42  Yes, and she was afraid she'd lose her kids because she has no job, because the women in these religions do not have jobs, so they have no money, so they can't. Brad Crowell 18:51  They have no agency. Lesley Logan 18:52  They have no agency. You are correct. Brad Crowell 18:53  They're like, often not educated intentionally. They are just taught to conform and control. Lesley Logan 18:59  Yes and she went for help multiple times, and the church, the different churches that she went to, didn't help her, didn't help her. So I think if you are listeners, and you're having a hard time that we are using the word Christian, and you're like, that's not my, that's not what I know. Brad Crowell 19:15  That's not what I know.Lesley Logan 19:15  That's not what he knew.Brad Crowell 19:17  I mean, I grew up, I grew up in a church, and my church was pretty conservative. It was like a very intellectual style church, and then I ended up going to a very, very conservative 1950-style Bible college, you know where you weren't allowed to hold hand on campus unless you were engaged. You know, it was some, it was some really, really crazy rules that didn't make any sense. Lesley Logan 19:37  And that, that school is producing a lot of this, and.Brad Crowell 19:43  I mean, especially, like a Trad wife thing, or you know, they used to jokingly call my school, the letters are LBC, like, like, Bible the bridal college. It was Bible college, but they used to call bridal college.Lesley Logan 19:53  I went to a Christian university, and everyone said, my dad said do not go here for your MRS degree It's too expensive. Brad Crowell 19:59  That's right. Lesley Logan 19:59  That's what my dad said to me. So I was intentional and not dating and not getting married, but so many of my friends that was what they wanted, because that's what they had been raised with, and that's what they thought. And here's the thing, if that's what you want, there is nothing wrong with that. But where things get wrong is and what what she experiences when there's abuse, when you are affecting children negatively when you are in this control place and and then you are trying to then control those lives around you who do not live this way. That's where it goes wrong. Yeah? It's not like they're just on their plot of land living their purity life.Brad Crowell 20:34  Yeah, I think that's actually the thing that's kind of insane. Is like Christianity, the way I experienced it, and the way that I grew up, it was like, of course, there's missionaries and we're spreading the Good News and all that kind of a thing. That's not what this you know, that's still part of it. But this is about control. I also about taking over. Lesley Logan 20:51  I think Tia and I also talked about this. When I went to church, you didn't know how people voted in your church. No one talked about that. My high school church was pretty conservative. They didn't preach from the pulpit. It was very, obviously, there were certain topics that people knew how people were voting. But Brene Brown said in one of her books, might have been Rising Strong or something about leaders. She said in the 70s, 70% of people lived in a community that voted differently than them. And today, well today, 10 years ago, 10 years ago, 70% of people lived where they voted the same. And so now the problem is, is that now, because you live in an environment where everyone's voting, similarly, it's also very visible because of the internet, yes, your fear of being kicked out of the community is so real because you want to belong. Brad Crowell 21:39  That's right. Lesley Logan 21:39  And so that is kind of what (inaudible).Brad Crowell 21:29  I mean we're a tribal, we're tribal species. Lesley Logan 21:38  Of course. That's how being able to tell stories and work together is kind of why we got here. We probably should talk about her talking points. Brad Crowell 21:49  I know. We've, we definitely went down a tangent there. I appreciate you. Lesley Logan 21:53  I really hope you all read her book and if you want to listen to it on tape. It is a great listen. It is hard. I strongly encourage you if you are like this is not how I know church to be, then I also encourage you, because it's important to know what other people are going through, because you also need to understand, why are they voting that way? Yeah, why are they not scared about these things? Because that's how they're living, and they want us all to live like it. So I was, I think I asked her a question, and her response was, that's faith. And I was like, oh my God, so be it till you see it is faith, guys. And one of the things that like blew my mind when I read her book is that you could be it till you see it in a way that affects you. But I had this in relation today.Brad Crowell 22:31  I need you to expound on that. Be it till you see it in a way that.Lesley Logan 22:34  Is affecting you.Brad Crowell 22:35  Negatively affects you. So, it is possible to do that be it till you see it in a way that negative (inaudible).Lesley Logan 22:40  And here's, here's what I have percolated on census interview, and she said you're supposed to become what they want you to be. So it's not being until you see it. It's being it till they see it in you, until you're doing what they want. So it's really not, it's still not a true be it because you are conforming to what they want and you're being it till they see it. That's what it really is. You're doing all the things to get their approval, to stay in the community, or to not get beat by the husband, or be terrible to get kicked out. She even talks about this time when she found this internet group, and then she almost got kicked out of that internet group because they were kind of like talking about things that were like, not super purity, whatever their religion was at the time. So anyways, faith is how these things happen. You're having faith. Brad Crowell 23:25  And I think we need to clarify that. Lesley Logan 23:27  Well, why don't you? Brad Crowell 23:28  Okay, so faith is the idea that you can become this thing, right? That this thing can happen for you down the road. What she's talking about there is that when you have a religious formula that promises rewards, like prosperity or love or blessings or happiness, if you do x, y and z, then why would you not want to do x, y and z? Because you want to stay in the community. Your family is there, your friends are there. And so of course, that's the entire goal is then okay, if I do this, then these other things will happen, and that will be this high level reward of prosperity and love. I mean, there's a whole new offshoot of Christianity that is literally, like, all they talk about is making money. Lesley Logan 24:12  Oh yeah.Brad Crowell 24:12  Yeah. It's crazy. Minion Jesus. It's like a whole fucking thing. It's fascinating. Lesley Logan 24:16  It's very, I know it's a bit much, it's a derogatory name, so please don't get mad at me. But the Moonies have broken up, and the second son of the Moonies guy, their whole Christianity is built on guns and the Second Amendment, and so he's the Third Coming of Christ, or something like that. There is a lot of different ones out there guys. But she said fear of rejection and punishment drove her to fake it till I make it, to avoid hell, to void rejection and unhappiness, because that's what they promised her. They promised her, if you follow all these things, you will feel this way.Brad Crowell 24:46  Yeah, no, well, not that you'll feel this way, but that you will avoid these things. Yeah. Lesley Logan 24:50  Some of us can think back into our youth to kind of go, oh man. When I was in my 20s, I was such a free spirit. I was such these things to, like, kind of find themselves again, right? She can't do that. She can't look at her 20-something self or her 30-something (inaudible) right because they, she actually had to grieve those parts of her past that is gone. She doesn't get those back. She doesn't get those years back. She can't change that. So she had to have a new vision for what is, who's Tia at 50? And that you guys, is being until you see it. So if you are someone like Tia who has just such a childhood or such an event in your early youth, like adulthood, that you can't really use that time to figure out what did make me happy? Like, I hate the question, like, oh, were you super like this when you were a kid and that's why you're a Pilates instructor? No, I wasn't. She can't, being it until you see it is like, what, who do I want to be? What could I be? And you have to see some of those things to believe those things. So she was not going to let them get her present or her future, because that was the only thing she had control over. And I find that so cool, whether or not you had her life experience right now, you guys, you have the control over the present and the future, like the choices you're gonna make. Obviously don't have control of, like, what could happen in those things. But like, what time you want to wake up? Where do you want to go? What do you want to wear? What do you want to listen to? What are you putting in your ears? You have control of those things. So that is part of being it, till you see it. Brad Crowell 26:10  Here's what I really loved, and this is where I'm going to go a little bit into politics y'all, which we don't do very often here on this pod. I'm sure you understand. If you're a longtime listener. You know us. You know where we stand. I want to talk about this here because this is a very scary concept. Okay, what you two were talking about was, what if our convicted felon of a candidate for the Republican Party, what if he gets into office? That's going to be really scary. But what if he doesn't get into office? What is actually going to happen? It's not like this movement is just gonna go away. So how are they doing that? And what she did is she broke down how there's a bunch of conservative organizations who effectively banded together. There's over 100 of them, right? And they created this program called Project 2025, and before that, they were very connected to Jerry Falwell. And before Jerry Falwell came out and said, hey, we should be supporting Trump. The Republican Party was not interested in supporting Trump. They were like, we're not with this guy. He's a crazy person. But because of the religious fundamental movements that are really underpinning a lot of the decision making now in the Republican Party, they said, no, no, we got to get behind Trump. And what they did is they basically created someone who could be swapped out. So if it's not Trump, it could be somebody else. It doesn't matter.Lesley Logan 27:28  Oh, (inaudible) and I got to show you a reel I just saw. I'll show it to you later. Brad Crowell 27:31  Yeah. So the point is that if he fails to be elected president, it doesn't mean that this movement goes away, okay, and so you two were then talking about, what do we do, and how do you move forward with this? And Tia said she chooses light, she chooses life, she chooses energy, she chooses progress. So she was specifically talking about voting, and she said the most important thing is that we have the right to vote and we can cast the vote. She was not in a place where she could vote. Lesley Logan 27:59  No. She was in this country and was not allowed to vote. Brad Crowell 28:01  She was not allowed to vote. Okay? And so I'm today, right now, I'm wearing a hat that's, it says VSA on it, VSA, which stands for Vote Save America, and it's an organization that we would encourage you to go check out. They help you volunteer, donate, or even run for office, or just understand, are you even a registered voter? They can help you through all those things, and they're an amazing organization. Vote save America. Go check that out. But she said, if there's someone who is going to be putting policy in place that could restrict my vote, I'm voting for the other guy because the other guy is going to be helping me be able to vote. Lesley Logan 28:34  And I think that's really important, no matter how you label yourself in politics in this particular upcoming election, and maybe the next one too. We need to be voting for the people who have the love and the light and the energy to provide more rights for people, not take them away. That's the easiest way to distill who am I voting for in every single whether it's a judge or a local school board or whatever it's like, who is wanting to support as many lives as possible, and who wants to support less people? Brad Crowell 29:05  She said something else, which I thought was really interesting. She's like we as a society have moved through and past puritanical times, but that's what she was basically living under, right? Here in the United States today, right now. And the point is, this is still there, and the Christian Nationalist Movement that is, the fundamentalist movements that she was part of, could be lumped under that movement. They're still making decisions, and they're still trying to expand and control, right? So when we are voting, we need to be voting people into power who are going to be protecting people, right? Not people into power who are going to be taking rights away for people. Lesley Logan 29:43  And voting for people who we might not agree with on everything but we can argue with because we have the right to that is a right that is not shared in most countries, to be able to yell at your politician and go, you're not doing what I want. That is a very special thing we have here. So Jane Bona says you vote for the person you can argue with. Brad Crowell 29:59  I was just thinking about her. Lesley Logan 30:00  Yeah. So in Shakespearean times, when they wrote those plays, the Puritans were really big in power, and they would control a theater, and certain plays would not be allowed on the stage, and no woman could write and no woman could act in them even though the characters were women, they had the men dressed as women, because it would have been too ridiculous outside of their religion. That's what it is. That's what's going on. You won't even have art. It doesn't exist. Anyways, we've got to get to the Be It Action Items.Brad Crowell 30:27  Yeah. So she said I choose to go forward. And she expressed support for political ideologies and groups that protect progress, even if she doesn't agree with them entirely. Okay? So you know that is what we would put this in front of you and argue the same thing. I don't remember why or when it became this idea that we have to agree with our political candidates 100% of the time for us to vote for them? That is, that is like only a new thing. That was never the case, even 10 years ago.Lesley Logan 30:57  My parents always bitched about whatever President was in office and they voted for him. Brad Crowell 31:01  Right. Yeah, exactly. And somehow we have this idea that, like, oh, there's this one thing I don't agree with. Well, what about the other 99 things? Do you agree with those? So anyway, yeah, all right. Lesley Logan 31:13  We'll, beat this in. Brad Crowell 31:14  Yeah. Lesley Logan 31:15  We're linking to everything. I'm sure we did it on the other episode on Project 2025, if you come at me and say he said he's not with that, I'm gonna tell you right now, he flew on the plane with him after he said that. He hung out with him after he said that, do not come at me with that, because it's called logic. And 200 people who were part of his office before were part of writing that. Brad Crowell 31:34  So yeah, I mean, like a large part of his staff were the people who then went on to write project 2025 so of course, he's aware. Lesley Logan 31:41  Let's get to some positive Brad Crowell 31:42  All right. Let's move on. Let's move on. Stick around. We'll be right back. We're actually gonna dig into the Be It Action Items that we took away from Tia, where she had some incredible insight that's for each and every one of us. So we'll be right back. Brad Crowell 31:54  All right. Welcome back. Finally. Let's talk about those, Be It Action Items. I'll get myself off my high horse here, and we'll talk about Tia Levings and the action items that she said during the interview last week or earliest week, what bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted action items can we take away from your convo with Tia Levings? She sai hey, spend time with yo self.Lesley Logan 32:18  She went on a freaking slow cruise to Europe. Brad Crowell 32:21  By herself. Lesley Logan 32:22  Yeah, it takes like, six or eight weeks.Brad Crowell 32:24  That's pretty crazy. I know that's kind of amazing.Lesley Logan 32:27  I want to, do I want to do that? I don't. I love being by myself. Do I want to be by myself that much? I don't know, but I agree with this. I love when you go out. I'm like, I have all (inaudible). What am I gonna do? It's such a good way to, kind of, like, understand what you need and what's going on. I love it. Brad Crowell 32:41  Yeah, she talked about just tuning out the noise, learning to sit in silence. I can tell you, I always find myself walking around listening to something. I'm always listening to something. It's very rare that I actually have just chill time. I'm always entertaining myself in some way. She pays attention to her nerves and bodily sensations, honoring them, even if she can't fully understand them or express them yet. So when you have a little bit of quiet time, that can be really powerful.Lesley Logan 33:09  Yeah, I agree. And it's also kind of the only way to hear it, you gotta hear it, you know? All right, my biggest takeaway is kind of, I mean, like she'd spend time with yourself, and then she said, spend a lot of time envisioning. She doesn't believe you can become something without intention unless you can see it. For her, she needs to be able to see it using practice like vision boarding and journaling to the person she wants to become. So she's big on vision boarding. And she also has a win board, and I love that. You guys have to have two boards because you can put it over here. I'm like, oh, that is way too much fun. I think it's so cool. Brad Crowell 33:41  I love the wins board because it allows you to remember, if you're in the moment of beating yourself up, which we all go through, you know, being able to turn around and see the wins board and be like, oh, yeah. But I, I did do that. And that happened, and this happened. Lesley Logan 33:55  I mean, you guys, she practiced many times in the mirror being able to speak or smile like a normal person would, because she didn't spend a lot of time with people outside of her church. There's just different nuances to how life is. Brad Crowell 34:09  She said she couldn't even be on the phone without stuttering the whole time. And she said being able to even do the interview that you two had is like a dramatic difference from where she was.Lesley Logan 34:20  Yeah. And she's doing some great things. She's really worth following on Instagram. I highly recommend it. I really recommend this book. I recommend anyone who is doubtful that this stuff really exists, it's, it does, and so reading other people's stories kind of, to me, though, it's why I like books and I like travel. It allows you to see how other people are living, and one, recognize how much you do have. Two, you can learn a lot about what you want and don't want, and that is important. You know, we take things for granted.Brad Crowell 34:48  I was literally just gonna say, I want you to know how much we appreciate you, yeah, being here with us on this pod, and we genuinely care about you, your well being and your future. We care about all of our future.Lesley Logan 35:01  So if you disagree, if you disagree with some of us on some of these points, that's okay, because we still love you, because just like we don't have to agree with every 100% of the people we're voting for, we don't have to agree with everything that you are or say to still love you and still want to support you and your journey. Trust us. We've got family members who I'm a little bit like, hmm, we don't agree on these things, but I still love you and I still want the best for you, and we will constantly put out content here to support you and everything you want to be it until you see it. Thank you so much. Brad Crowell 35:29  Bye for now.Lesley Logan 35:31  That's all I got for this episode of the Be It Till You See It Podcast. EDINBURG, TEXAS - The College of Engineering & Computer Science is the fastest growing and most productive college at UT-Rio Grande Valley, says its dean. Dr. Ala Qubbaj gave an update on college activities at CECS's 2024 Convocation. He said one in seven students at UTRGV are part of CECS and, pro rata, its faculty bring in the most grants and research dollars. “I'm happy to report that we have the largest freshman class ever, 1,128 students. It sounds exciting, but we are having challenges finding classes and space for them,” Qubbaj said. “But that's a good problem to have because I talk with other deans, and they tell me they are having problems fighting students. I don't have that problem.” Qubbaj said CECS has grown 75 percent in the last five years.  “We have over 5,000 students in this college. Can you believe it? Five thousand prospective engineers,” Qubbaj said, proudly.  That number is even more impressive when one considers that engineering classes at UTRGV only started back in the 1990s (at its predecessor, UT-Pan American), Qubbaj said. Before that state leaders would not give accreditation to UTPA for an undergraduate engineering program because, Qubbaj said, they did not think its students were smart enough to enter that profession.  “If we didn't have a College of Engineering here, how many of those 5,000 students (would make it)? Maybe ten percent of them, maybe 15 percent? So, this is tremendous,” Qubbaj said. UTRGV has grown to 34,000 students so CECS represents 15 percent, Qubbaj said. “So, if you walk across our campus, one in each seven students is an engineer. You cannot find that in any other university.” Another thing Qubbaj is excited about is the fact that 20 percent of the students within CECS are females. "Actually, last semester, I had the president of the Society of Women Engineers (visit). When I told her we have 1,000 female engineering students, she was astonished. And, by the way, 20 percent are Latina. You know what's the representation of Latinas is in engineering? One percent. We have 20 percent. So, this is amazing.”Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian website to read the full story.Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

Have you ever been to a counselling conference? Are you considering going to one this year for the first time, or are you a regular attendee?  Whether you are more introverted or an extrovert, conferences offer spaces for both! Not just quiet workshops or long tables filled with fascinating people, but also where you can learn and develop your skills as a professional while enjoying time spent with other interesting therapists.  I got out of my comfort zone a bit and went to a CCPA conference last year, and it was great! Going forward, I know what I'm looking for now, and how to find other great therapists. If you're interested in finding out how, listen in! In this Episode: What is the CCPA? Conferences can be a lot of fun! Choosing conferences going forward  What is the CCPA? ‘If you don't know, CCPA stands for Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, and usually the conference that they have each year is in the springtime, but last year in 2023 they had it in October in Toronto.' - Julia Smith  Usually, going to a conference for me is nerve wracking on a couple of levels! I was going alone to this conference, and I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy it or not. However, I was able to select the speakers that I was interested in, but it can be a hit-and-miss!  However, going to conferences also contributes to your CEC credits that all members of the CCPA need to get each year. So, keeping all this in mind, I pushed myself to go! Conferences can be a lot of fun! ‘With the CCPA conferences, you're expected to network. It is encouraged to talk to other counsellors. You don't look silly going up to people and starting conversations … Once I got into the swing of things, it was really fun to have conversations with counsellors from all over Canada!' - Julia Smith  If you felt like you were getting a little over socialized, you could go see some of the workshops and talks that were happening around at any given time.  I really liked that there were options to be silent and listen, or to put yourself out there and socialize! Even during lunches, it felt comfortable to sit down at a table with people that I didn't know and to strike up a conversation, since this is encouraged by the CCPA conference guidelines. Everyone's in the same boat! Choosing conferences going forward  Despite the great time I had, I know that I want to be intentional about choosing the future conferences I'll go to. Specifically, I want to be mindful about going to conferences which will give certain information that I want to learn about.  The CCPA conference is great for learning about many different things in the counselling world, from research to different types of therapy techniques to private practice information. Although, I know what I love! And so I would love to go to a conference on narrative therapy for therapists, because that is what I want to learn more about.  ‘So for you, as you're considering your budget for this year, I'd highly recommend budgeting some money for going to a conference, and honestly I'd really just start with the CCPA conference! The workshops are so diverse, everybody is a Canadian counsellor, and you get CECs for going!' - Julia Smith  Connect with me: Instagram Website  Resources Mentioned and Useful Links:  Ep 118: Brittany Wells-Pantaleo: Growing a Group Practice Virtually and Ethically | EP 118  Learn more about the tools and deals that I love and use for my Canadian private practice Article: How to Set Up a Canadian Private Practice Website   Sign up for my free e-course on How to Start an Online Canadian Private Practice Jane App (use code FEARLESS for one month free) Rate, review, and subscribe to this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon, and TuneIn

No one gets anywhere being shamed. You cannot shame yourself to hit your goals. Lesley Logan 0:08  Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. Let's get started.  Lesley Logan 0:50  Welcome back to the Be It Till You See It interview recap where my co-host in life Brad and I are going to dig into the motivational convo I had with Tamika Robinson in our last episode. If you haven't yet listened that episode, feel free to pause this now. Go back, listen to that one, you're gonna hear Tamika and I giggle a lot, especially if you're listening 2x like Brad does, then it sounds like chipmunks. But it's a lot of fun. It's quite motivational. I loved it, it was really great. And then you can come back and listen to this or you can listen to us now and then decide when to listen to that. Whatever you want to do is totally fine. I just want to like highlight for a moment that this is the first time ever I have not tripped up on the intro of the recap. And we should just take a moment because it's what 200 Episode 290. After 145 times of trying here we are celebrating. Brad Crowell 1:34  I also did not interrupt you. So yeah. Lesley Logan 1:36  You didn't interrupt me and I didn't fuck up. And you gotta celebrate when you do things so your dopamine kick happens. And this is now a habit. Lesley Logan 1:45  Okay, so today is November 16. It's Useless Stuff Day. That's so crazy. I think that my FYF for tomorrow is about how I cleared out my closet. I didn't even know that, so great. So the day was created to spread awareness around the clutter of unnecessary things in our homes, especially during the busiest shopping months of the year. It encourages people to adopt a minimalist lifestyle where only the essentials are bought or kept. Keep that in mind as we talk about Black Friday, Cyber Monday, most everything that we're about to talk about is digital. So not gonna take up any space. But I agree, I do think that like, we probably have a lot of things. So maybe pick a room one of the things that Brad and I do on the New Year, which we're going to do this time around Thanksgiving, because we're never home on the New Year's anymore. So I picked a new holiday. So on Thanksgiving weekend we are we go through room by room, like clean out a closet, clean out a drawer and just like get rid of stuff. You're like i What is this? It's taking up space.Brad Crowell 2:41  And it was a hell of a lot easier when we lived in an apartment. Lesley Logan 2:44  Yes, now we don't. But now we have a whole weekend to do it, Brad, because we have Black Friday through Cyber Monday. Brad Crowell 2:50  That's true. That's true. Lesley Logan 2:52  Also, it's it's even if you just start with one room and just do the one room and you go, Okay, I have not used this in so many years like do you really need it, give it away to someone give it to someone. You can sell things on Facebook marketplace, you can make some money so you can actually get paid. Then what's going on. So next month is December. So we'll be on tour for our winter tour. And we've got tons of cities and lots of opportunity. Bring your friends bring your family, there's classes that anyone can attend. And then there's workshops that I designed them so that whether you're a teacher or a client, you can enjoy them. But there are CECs if you are a teacher. So go to opc.me/tour to see what cities we're going to be in. Look we're driving 7000 miles, you can drive two hours. I'm just saying. Brad Crowell 3:36  100% Lesley Logan 3:36  You can be part of if you are like oh my god Lesley, it's a holiday I have a family. I bet you they (inaudible), but you need a break. Or you can bring them and let me entertain them. So opc.me/tour. You're gonna want to be there. Next week is a holiday. Brad Crowell 3:50  It's a crazy tour. We're going to be hitting something like 20-plus locations on this tour.Lesley Logan 3:59  Yeah. I want to light I want to lighten the van that's like you are in Denver and like, hello Denver what's up? Like, then I was like okay, Lesley, you are now in Austin, okay. I'm in Austin, okay, like I need to, I need a flashing light anyways, but let's get back to today. Next week is the official Black Friday Cyber Monday situation. So I know your inbox is full of people who celebrate all month long. But here at our household, we really like nostalgia. And so the earliest we kick things off is next Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, there are lots of opportunities for you to save on mat flashcards, on Pilates workshops, on business workshops.Brad Crowell 4:45  And my special upcoming live webinar.Lesley Logan 4:48  Yes.Brad Crowell 4:49  We're gonna be doing. We're gonna be selling tickets for that over BFCM as well.Lesley Logan 4:54  We might as well go into what that webinar is. Brad Crowell 4:57  What your website needs. Lesley Logan 4:59  You all, websites are not going anywhere. I don't care how important social media seems to be in your life. And no matter what your be it till you see it is I bet you need a website. Brad Crowell 5:09  I'll be catering it specifically towards Pilates instructors. Lesley Logan 5:12  Yeah. But if you're in a service based businessBrad Crowell 5:14  If you're yoga or anything like that, that's super good, you know, it'll be super applicable for you too. And I'm going to be really digging into things like, let's say you actually have no interest in doing the website yourself. By the end of the webinar, you should be able to have a comprehensive, you know, conversation with your web designer, web developer person, so that, you know, you don't feel like they're talking over your head. Lesley Logan 5:40  Well, and also you want to be able to know like, you don't need them to sell you things you don't need. So when you know what your website needs, you can be really clear, like, this is what I want, how much is this and that way you can really price compare, and you can find if someone's not listening to you be like, oh, like you're gonna have a lot more competence in those conversations. So super huge, you're gonna want to make sure if you're in the service-based industry, you're gonna want to make sure you're watching for our Pprofitable Pilates emails, because the best deal is going to be around the Black Friday, Cyber Monday. So we have discounts on OPC and on Profitable Pilates. So you'll have to go to the website specifically to grab all of those. There's options if you're not an OPC member, but you've always wanted to try it out. There's a deal for that. I mean, we are doing all the things most of them are digital so you can still clean out your house and be clutter free and get these things but you're (inaudible) flashcards just saying. Anyways, okay, so that is all the updates for us. Before we get into the episode with Tamika, do we have an audience question?Brad Crowell 6:36  Hey, we sure do. What a coincidence. This week.Lesley Logan 6:42  I just got this question today on Instagram.Brad Crowell 6:44  What microphones do you use to record your Pilates workouts? Lesley Logan 6:47  Yes, so okay, um, in all honesty, I don't know. But Brad probably does. What we do Brad Crowell 6:54  We use whatever Nate tells us to use.Lesley Logan 6:57  Yes, so Nate is the most incredible, most amazing salesperson at Sweetwater sound, and you guys. Sweetwater is like one of the coolest companies because they're like, they're kicking ass when it comes to selling microphones in all the spaces they're just like they sell more than microphones. Brad Crowell 7:14  It's basically that like in the 90s and early 2000s They were competing with Guitar Center which was brick and mortar and they were a mail order catalog only. And then they went online and then now they actually give Amazon a run for their money for music distribution or for music gear distribution.Lesley Logan 7:33  And they have warehouses now in different places, which is a huge new thing for them (inaudible) yeah, and so they can get you stuff so quickly. So Nate is our guy and so here's how you can find out all the information on anything that we use to record for our YouTube videos and our on demand workouts you go to profitablepilates.com/livestream Brad made a fancy guide and has literally all the things you need to level up your live stream you it's free it's free guide just go to profitablepilates.com/livestream.Brad Crowell 8:06  Yeah and if the if the gear, gear changes over time so you know there's there's direct connection to Nate right in the on that guide.Lesley Logan 8:15  Tell him what you're doing and he'll tell you what you should get. Brad Crowell 8:17  Just reach out to him just email him and tell him that you came from us. Tell him what you're looking for. And we'll help you out.Lesley Logan 8:24  He did our podcast mics, he does he helps us with our Pilates mics.Brad Crowell 8:26  Even this lighting.Lesley Logan 8:27  Oh yeah. And speaking of Pilates mics we have to get a new cord because we're at a year and yeah, these cords just so you know, everyone they're not made for filming Pilates. They're made for maybe filming a spin class.Brad Crowell 8:40  They're not made for rolling around on the microphone cord. No.Lesley Logan 8:43  Correct. And so basically like my cord lasts a year. That's all, that's pretty much all it is. And it's annoying and it's frustrating and yes, it's but it costs money. Guess what? It costs money to make money. I don't, I'm not going to sugarcoat it for you, it costs money.Brad Crowell 9:02  The cord's not that bad.Lesley Logan 9:04  It's like 100 bucks. Brad Crowell 9:04  No, the cord, it's like seven.Lesley Logan 9:06  Oh, okay, well spent. But yeah, but like when you invest the first time for the microphone, it's like 100 bucks.Brad Crowell 9:10   Yeah. The microphone is more expensive. Yes. Yeah, the cord is fine. Lesley Logan 9:14  Anyway, so profitablepilates.com/livestream, you guys send your questions in, we answer questions ranging all host of things. So send them on to the Be It pod we can answer your questions on the next episode.Brad Crowell 9:26  Okay, now let's talk about Tamika Robinson, founder of Jar Fit. Tamika shares her journey as a personal trainer, focusing on 80 women to achieve their body goals. She's committed to empowering her clients celebrating their small wins and fostering self-belief through each step of their fitness journey. And I don't know if you've gone to her website to see pictures of her competition body. But she's amazingly impressive. When it comes to, she competes. And I think she's won titles and stuff. So it's amazing to see. You know, so you can do that. Her husband, I believe also competes because he's massive. Lesley Logan 10:13  I know. But you know, like that, that means that parts of the year they only have rice and salmon. And like, that's a whole world of life. We didn't really dive into competitions, just because I wanted to be, yeah, no, yeah. Because I want it to be like what you can be till you see it. And I really like. So we had on James Patrick a while back and he hosts an amazing event every year about getting like booked for gigs. Hello, August. And getting booked for gigs. And we are one of the media outlets that they can get booked on. And he has been on the show. So he knows what we're looking for. And out of the like 500 people he's like, here are the best people I think you'd like. So take a look at all 500. But I think you would love these. And I did look through about 100. But I looked at the five that he sent me. And Tamika, I just like I really so which what came through on her stuff is very much this. Like she said, if you get better 1% every day, that the end of the year, that's 365%. Now I'm sure there's a mathematician who is actually going to say, well, actually, if you start off at 100%, it does compound, so it's even more amazing. It's even more amazing. And I loved it because it made me think of Allen Stein Jr. But how he's always like, did I get 1% closer to my goal today? And so I think like, especially because the women who listen to this podcast, hi, I see, you might type a perfectionist, we tend to think it's all or nothing if I didn't improve 100% I did nothing today. And it's like, actually, what if you do just one thing, one thing today that got you closer to your goal, at the end of the year, it's 365 things, you probably are going to surpass that goal. You know. And so when we make it up so hard, so she, she does this a little bit more specifically, we got into like, how she does with her weight training and like helping people. But I want to like more importantly, I want to talk about how she like, uses positive reinforcement to motivate her clients, you guys positive reinforcement is actually how habits are created. No one gets anywhere being shamed. You cannot shame yourself to hit your goals, period. And I'm sorry, you might be able to shame yourself to get out of the fucking bed a couple times a week or maybe get to the wherever the place but like you cannot shame yourself to achieving anything because it doesn't work is the same thing as like motivation. Like if you're waiting to be motivated, like that's going to come on you I was motivated at 4am this morning. That is not a consistent thing. It's just because we got home and we're still working on getting up at 5am. But I was like motivated and ready to go. That's you know, you can't just wait on motivation. It's going to come up with the worst times, right. And she also talked about like, how she really encourages her clients to journal and on their experiences and reflections. And I think this is really great. We listen to a guy on his podcast and he writes everything down. He must write his everyday down. Because he remember his his stories he's like on this day, 23 years ago, yeah, this thing happened to me. And I'm like, What the fuck? Is he reading his journal? Like, how does he know what happened on this day to himself in 47 years? Like, what is happening?Brad Crowell 13:27  Well, yeah, obviously he has it all catalogued too, so he could flip through? Yeah. And like immediately reference like, this day, on all these years previous. I mean, Lesley Logan 13:38  What if we just did that for that recaps instead of like, it's this day in the world right now. Like, okay, on this day, 27 years ago, in my life, I went on my first date. No, but like, if you can take whether you want to journal in the morning, or in the evening, find a time to like, talk, like write down your experiences from the day write down three things that happened to you, and then reflect on like, how did you like that? What was your favorite part about that? Because those kinds of things help you really understand yourself. I with Brad and I were in a coaching session today with our coach. And I was like, Oh, I journaled today. And I became extremely aware of like, how I've been holding myself back this year. And it's not like in a negative way. It's like, oh, aha moment. Whoa, like, these things are really important. So I love that she does that and then she really encourages them to acknowledge their own progress. So they can feel good about their achievements. So just I think more coaches like her affecting more women out in the world she does it through weight training, but like my goodness, you guys don't You don't have to wait train with her to get this you can actually like take these things and like apply them to your life the way you do them.Brad Crowell 14:42  Yeah, totally. And, you know, when when? Well, she said a bunch of things that I also dug. One I thought it was really fun that she mentioned. She and her partner both share similar personal goals and so that's why they started working together. And that was fun. Because that's how life is for us. And it made me think about that. But I really loved when she was talking about, like her transition into becoming a coach. Becoming a trainer actually. And so she said, if you're planning on starting your side, hustle or leaving your full-time job, you must know what it is that you need to make, so that you can enjoy Lesley Logan 15:31  I knew you'd love this. Brad Crowell 15:32  Yeah. So you can like enjoy being, you know, in your new role. And because she, it was really interesting to listen to her talk about like, the idea of being a trainer. And that being her profession, right, because she comes from like, she went and got a Criminal Justice background degree, like master's degree. She was like, trying to work for the FBI, like three times she applied and wasn't getting the FBI. Lesley Logan 16:02  I mean, their fucking loss, because she's amazing. And also, like, she's so sweet. I feel like the FBI would like just like...Brad Crowell 16:08  Yeah. Let's she, you know, so she had this preconceived notion of like, who am I? What am I supposed to do with my life, and then she just enjoyed the training and then started, you know, she got certified and then started training people. And but I still think even she mentioned that even after she started taking clients, she still wasn't like, convinced herself that this is her job, her profession, right. And it took a long time for her to settle in and actually did really lean into it. And, you know, so I think, when she was first starting out, she was a little unsettled, like, I'm not, you know, making my insurance or I'm not making my, my, you know, the money that I think I should be making or whatever. And so she then reflects on that and teaches her clients like, hey, you know, know what you need to make before you quit. And she said, also, what I thought was really nice is that it was messy. It was a messy process, I thought that was really cool that she was so transparent. You know, it didn't happen overnight, she didn't like immediately start making her goal income right away all the things. In fact, she, she started writing herself a check for 10 grand, every single month, even if she wasn't able to cash that check, she began to visualize this concept of like, this is the amount of money that I know that I want to make. I'm gonna write myself this check until I can cash (inaudible).Lesley Logan 17:38  I'm obsessed with this and so many reasons. reasons. One of the reasons is a too often people who work for themselves don't pay themselves an actual paycheck, they just like take from the bank account. Like, they don't actually get the same paycheck every month. Right? And the other reason I love it is like she's practicing writing down $10,000 paid to, to make it like the reality. Brad Crowell 18:00  I think she started talking about like, Monopoly money, though, because she was like, I don't have a checkbook.Lesley Logan 18:04  Yeah. But also okay. But also like seeing that, or this is something I talked to, like people who like, that's too much money to charge. It's like, say it out loud all the time. So it doesn't sound foreign. It's like, you the those these things can be come a little esoteric, or, or I guess it's the best word for this. Yeah. If you if you only think about them in your head, but if you actually, like, write the check, like we've had, or like, when we got this houseBrad Crowell 18:31  It doesn't feel real like it's you know, it's like, telling yourself, good job, but you don't, you know, doesn't really benefit you.Lesley Logan 18:40  I think like, the best you could do is like write yourself the check. Even if you don't cash it or, you know, grab Monopoly money,Brad Crowell 18:46  You got to associate it with an action, llike doing celebration is more than, you know, you inside your head saying I did it. You have to talk it out loud. You have to like, actually do something.Lesley Logan 18:58  And say, say these prices andthese goals out loud, because $10,000 might seem like a lot. If you're like me, you came from no money. Oh my god. Like, that's a lot of money. But if you start to say it out loud, and you talk about these numbers with your friends and things, I think it's so important for men to talk about how much money they make. And not in a boastful way. This is not like an arrogant way. This is a we have to start seeing these numbers as normal. It is normal to make $10,000 a month. It should be normal. And I know that like if you're like, oh my god Lesley, I barely make $2,000 a month. I'm like, so poor. Yeah, but talk like talk these numbers out so that 10,000 doesn't seem so far away. It seems one, you earned it, you deserve it. You deserve more than that. You're worthy of that and two, when you say your prices, it's not about your budget, right? It's about what you're worth of the effects that you make, that your talent has on these people's lives.Brad Crowell 19:52  The impact that you're having. Lesley Logan 19:54  You're not charging for the 55 minutes you're charging for the impact it's having. And so Danny J, whe should have Danny J and Joel on the pod. We should just do that. Okay. If you're listening, ladies, just text them out for this. But Danny J had us, like, take what we charge and double it and go around and say how much does it cost to work with you? And I'm like, okay, so I took the OPC most expensive membership. And I said, okay, it costs $1,400 a year to take. And I said, How many classes that that membership included was like six times 12 is 64, 66, 64?Brad Crowell 20:31  I wasn't actually paying attention. Lesley Logan 20:33  So how much is 12 times six?Brad Crowell 20:35  You get 104 classes? The most expensive? Okay, so 152.Lesley Logan 20:39  152. So 152 for $1,500 It's only 150 We don't try to generalize guys, but the point was to take what you charge and double it. And so if you think holy, that's fucking $10 cost well guess what, my rates are actually half that. So it's five dollars a class to work with me for a whole year. That's so cheap, right? But we think about oh my god $700. Like we think about the bigger number, right? Breaking it down. So Danny J had us like, take the money, double it. And then walk around saying that so that when you say your actual price, it sounds so inexpensive.Brad Crowell 21:16  Well, in that same vein, I she recommended a book. Lesley Logan 21:20  I can't wait to read this. Brad Crowell 21:21  Overcoming, called Overcoming Underearning by Barbara Stanny. And, you know, it was interesting to listen to her talk about that. I think that would have been really beneficial for me. When I was first getting started, you know, too because I was like, Oh man, if I can only make $100 today, you know, or if I can only make $30,000 a year if I can only make $50,000 a year. And you know, I think it's really important that we, like you said talk about the money side of it. But also it is expensive to live in a city. Period. So doesn't matter which city you're in. It's expensive to live in a city. And you know, to make 50 grand in a city. You're barely paying your bills. You know, 50 grand seems like so much fucking money for me.Lesley Logan 22:18  Yeah. Because I mean, I knew what my parents made, like my mom. I'm gonna say this because you want to know how schoolteachers make. My mom taught private school and in the 2000s. And I guess they call it the arts. I don't really understand what that comes from. In the 2000s. She made $22,000 a year as a full-time fifth grade school teacher. What the fuck? That is McDonald's employees back then made more money in a year full time. Okay, so she's the college-educated person who was making that. My father was making a little over 40 something at some point when I heard his salary. Me getting paid $50,000 I was like, I'm slaying right, I'm killing it. No, I could barely pay my bills, like where I live? Because I live in a city like you did. And so it's like, but because my mindset that seemed like, that's so much money, it was I did not have a mindset that was likeBrad Crowell 23:14  Oh, my gosh, I was like, if I can make 75 I'm going to be rich.Lesley Logan 23:17  Yeah. If you move to I don't know, I don't even know where you can live for 75,000 anymore. Maybe Alabama? I don't know. Brad Crowell 23:25  But, but I think but so this book, it was interesting to hear her talk about it. And so, you know, we're, we're, we're gonna check it out, too. We haven't actually checked it out, but Overcoming Underearning by Barbara Stanny. Yeah. So, you know, she, she also talked about when, you know, identifying her current situation and desired goals, she created a plan, saying I'm going to calculate all my clients figure out what I'm paying rent what I need, and then I'm going to figure out the plan. So for those of you who have worked with us in Agency, that probably sounds really familiar. We obviously talked about the magic number calculator, and it really helps create that clarity for what you need to set for your rates to help you work backwards, just like she was talking about here. So that you can make the money that you need to make to include time off, sick days off, you know, all those kinds of things. And I just thought it was really aligned with what we are all about. So yeah, great stuff.Lesley Logan 24:28  Yeah, I'm in love. Tamika, we love you.Brad Crowell 24:32  All right, so finally let's talk about those Be It Action Items. What bold, executable, intrinsic, targeted action items can we take away from your convo with Tamika Robinson? She said if you are stressed cry, it's okay, you're allowed. You're allowed to do it. She said feel your feelings crying is perfectly acceptable. So you know this is interesting. I was never really taught this.Lesley Logan 25:00  I cry all the time. Yeah, but I had to remind myself it's okay.Brad Crowell 25:08  All right. Okay, I'm still talking over here. So my so what I was never really taught this and my, my feeling my feelings. I would wait, wait, wait until it became anger. And then I would feel my feelings in an explosive way. And that never benefited me. Anyone else around me none of that stuff. So I thought it was really helpful to just hear that. You know, you're you're supposed to feel your feelings that's being human. And if that, you know, turns into tears, that's okay. It's allowed.Lesley Logan 25:46  Yeah. Yeah. Well, I'm really glad that you heard it now. And I thinkBrad Crowell 25:52  Would have been really helpful. 20 years ago.Lesley Logan 25:54  I well. Isn't that the, I think...Brad Crowell 25:56  Even 10. Lesley Logan 25:57  Well, can I just be honest, girls are told not to cry. And especially Brad Crowell 26:01  So are boys. Lesley Logan 26:02  Well, girls can, but not at work. Don't let anyone see you cry at work. And it's like, okay, but your passion is actually super. Like, if you if you're crying all the time, like maybe go take your hormones, but like, if you are so passionate, something you're so fresh, it makes you cry, because like the like, it's okay to like have those feelings, because if you shove them down, there is a really great book. I want to say it's called Burnout. It's like two sisters. I don't know that Burnout. I heard them on Brene Brown's podcast, but they said like that it's so important. To letLesley Logan 26:03  It is Burnout. Yeah, Emily and Amelia Nagosaki. Lesley Logan 26:08  Yes. So they said like, sometimes in the moment, it's not appropriate to feel you're feeling Brad Crowell 26:19  No. Nagoski.Lesley Logan 26:43  Yeah. It's not it's not. It's not always appropriate. So like, for example, you may be walking on the street and somebody like, calls out like, I'll just say, I'll, I'll do an actual example in my life. I was run in LA I used to run and this guy who was dressed like a gnome, I swear to God. Brad Crowell 27:08  A gnome? Lesley Logan 27:09  Yes. You heard me say it. He (inaudible) hobbit. He had a foil, little cap on Brad Crowell 27:14  I was thinking about the Seven Dwarfs. Lesley Logan 27:16  Oh, he, maybe but like really sort of The Hobbit like kind of like the like the bigger guy with a braid on his beard? I'll be running with my own, and he'd go you're a whore. Brad Crowell 27:27  What? Lesley Logan 27:28  Right? Because He's cray. He has he has mental problems. Okay, so he has more problems than I have. It doesn't feel good to feel be called that, right? So when I was out of arm's reach of him, I would laugh out loud because like, if I were just to like, shove that down, and every Sunday, this man would call me a whore. It is actually not Oh, you don't want to be called that doesn't feel good to be called that there was another guy that Eric used to hear. He would like, he was this other crazy dude on Wilshire, and he would call it something. And I just started going, you know, may the Lord open, blessed be like, oh, but I would like to make a joke about it. Because I had to let out I had to have a reaction to let that out. And their whole point is like, maybe in the moment, you can't let it out. Like, in my case, I was in an area where I could like, let like joke about it or laugh it out. But if you do have to, like hold it together, because maybe someone says something in a meeting and you can't say anything in the meeting, you can't cry in the meeting, then you need to actually get home, get to a pillow, scream in the pillow, like let it out. Because if you don't, if you don't feel your feelings, they bottle up and they actually do cost stress on the body. And they can keep you from becoming the person you're meant to be in this world. So I love that Be It Action. Mine is she said to write down 100 things on your to-do list. And I swear to God when she said that I was like maybe we are editing this Be It Action Item. Because this is not aligned with my values. But then she said, then after the fifth thing, cross everything out.Brad Crowell 28:59  She said, Yeah, she said take the top five and cross out 95 of them. Lesley Logan 29:06  Yes, yeah, yes. And I love this actually just kind of a book club meeting with Agency members called do the book was like, Do the One Thing or The One Thing or whatever. And I love this because it's so true. We put all these things on our list. But really the first five things are the most pressing things so they're top of mind the other 95 you're just like, look at me, I'm so busy. Look at me, like all these important things to do. So I thought that is so fun, because then you can get all that shit off your head, anyway. Brad Crowell 29:33  It's brain dump total, brain dump.Lesley Logan 29:34  Such a great brain dump and then you know what your top five priorities are boom, way to go. It helps to underscore the importance of having clear tangible steps and a pathway to achieving your personal goals. So way to go Tamika, you're so fun. I'm so glad that James introduced us.
