Episode 359 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Matt Douglas, Founder & CEO of Sincere. Boston has this legacy reputation that you can't build consumer companies in the area, yet there are so many great companies that have scaled like Wayfair, DraftKings, iRobot, SimpliSafe, and so… so… many more. Plus, don't get me started on how many brands, especially footwear, are located here. Anyway, Sincere is another example of a great consumer company at scale. It is highly likely that you've used one of their products like Punchbowl to plan a party, Timehop to relive past memories, or Memento, where you can collect and preserve memories together for a group video or photo album. Sincere's latest brand is Lovebird, a new platform for the wedding industry which is taking on The Knot and other outdated incumbents and as highlighted in this interview with Matt, there will be more coming from Sincere. In this podcast, we cover: * A discussion around the legacy of an entrepreneur and what led Matt down the path of starting a corporate foundation at Sincere for charitable initiatives. * Matt's background story, growing up with 5 brothers and how he started his entrepreneurial roots early on. * Getting his career started and how he became the youngest Product Manager at Adobe. * His brushes with tech luminaries like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Alexis Ohanian, Justin Kan, and Dharmesh Shah. * The background story of Punchbowl and the three key characteristics he used for building a business. * Why the expansion into the wedding market with Lovebird made sense for the company and how they are differentiating themselves from the competitors. * Matt's philosophy around buying premium domains and a hint about his best 5 letter domain that is not even live yet. * And so much more.

Ronnie's story is truly unique. He was raised to focus on his education and then have a successful career in a traditional field. He listened to his parents and graduated from Columbia Law School and then got a job at a prestigious law firm. After a couple of weeks, he quit. He hated it. He always had a passion for sports but to make a career out of it, you need to start at the bottom. And that's exactly what he did. He got an unpaid job working for a women's basketball team. His family thought he was crazy. But he loved it, and knew he was on the right path, so he stuck with it. He got a job at a minor league baseball team and really learned how to market with no budget. Around that time, he started getting into NBA 2K and became one its best players. He was an active participant in the community and he showed up on the NBA 2K team's radar. This was 15 years ago, when Twitter was just getting started, and Ronnie saw its potential. So, he asked an executive at 2K if he could create an account on Twitter: Ronnie 2K. That simple email changed everything. Listen to the full interview to hear about his journey to success and how you can land your dream job too.

In 2011, when Emmett Shear pivoted the live streaming service Justin.tv into the video game platform Twitch, people warned him that gaming was just a niche. But unlike his first two ventures, video games were something Emmett instinctively understood: he and his co-founder Justin Kan had been playing them together since they were kids. Emmett built a user base on Twitch by asking streamers exactly what they wanted and giving it to them: revenue opportunities, streamer fan clubs, customizable emoji. As it grew, Twitch attracted users from the darker corners of the web, but Emmett believes the site is first and foremost a way for people to come together and build supportive communities. In 2014, Emmett sold Twitch to Amazon for just under a billion dollars but stayed on as the CEO. Today, the platform has 31 million daily visitors who stream trillions of minutes of live video every year. Not bad for a niche business. Carter begins with a deep dive into the GameStop short squeeze: how it started, how the Cathedral (CNBC specifically) and Wall Street reacted, and who is connected to whom in the web of elitist cronyism. Next, Keri and Carter discuss the FBI charges against Ricky Vaughn, who was arrested and charged with "criminal infringement of the right to vote" for posting some memes. They contrast this with the FBI's lack of interest in Keri's former client, Kristina Wong, whose actions on Twitter were nearly identical to Ricky's, but targeted against Trump instead of against Hillary Clinton. Might the Deep State have a bias? Finally, they chat about Biden's latest among a slew of Executive Orders: "Advancing Racial Equity." They note how first Biden appeals to notions of "equal opportunity," then muddies the definitions of "equality" vs. "equity," and ends with a blatant proposal to implement institutionalized racism. Keri observes that Biden's mannerisms border on the uncanny valley, and the two contemplate the ridiculous idea that Biden's recent press conference appearance was actually a Deepfake.
