EFR 589: Staying Motivated to Train and How Your Mental Health, Biology, and Environment May Be Working Against Your Fitness Goals

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 4, 2022 47:04

In this solo episode, Chase reflects on his seasons of training, unpacking the things that have kept him motivated—and continue to keep him motivated—in and out of the gym. After over 17 years of purposefully and intentionally leading an active lifestyle, one of the most fundamental lessons Chase has learned is the cumulative power of consistency. You could say that just stepping foot in the gym when it's the last thing you feel like doing, is already half the battle. Many times, it really comes down to doing whatever it takes to simply show up, even if that means relying on external motivation to push you forward. Going through your personal seasons of fitness means that there will be weeks, months, or even a few years when that internal motivation that first got you going to the gym is no longer enough. As you “mature” on your fitness journey, you will need to find ways to reinvigorate your passion for training. Chase finds more purpose and excitement in his training today in large part because he found an amazing community of like-minded athletes. He also recently began testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), an ongoing experience which he speaks about at length in this episode. All that said, Chase reminds us to not neglect our mental and emotional health for the sake of our fitness goals. In his words, sometimes “motivation deserves a sit-down” so that we have the opportunity to check in with ourselves in a holistic sense. Chase is also a staunch advocate for tracking your training, because if you can't visually see your progress down to all of those minute wins that add up, it becomes so easy to lose motivation. Finally, throughout your seasons of training, always remember to embrace radical honesty not just to ensure you're really on the right path to growth, but also to assess whether you still have the same passion and excitement for the training modalities you're currently engaged in.   Follow Chase @chase_chewning   Episode resources: Blokes testosterone therapy at https://bit.ly/blokesef  Save 20% at Legion on your entire first purchase with code EVERFORWARD at www.LegionAthletics.com  Strong Coffee Company instant organic coffee is 15% off with code CHASE at www.StrongCoffeCompany.com

Austin Cohen, Founder and CEO of FlexIt Fitness, sits down with Chase to discuss how he was able to keep the momentum going for his “a-la-carte digital fitness solution” in spite of the many setbacks and distractions throughout the past two years. In fact, he says that it is the challenges themselves which incentivized him and his team at FlexIt to think up cutting-edge solutions that they never would have in the old, familiar normal. The company's focus, says Austin, has always been on “broadening access, of helping people understand that they can experience things that maybe they previously felt to be prohibitively costly, prohibitively inaccessible, or uncomfortable or intimidating.” He says that one of the keys to being able to adapt to the situation at hand and adopt new ways of doing things is by staying determined to achieve the same goals one might have for their health and fitness, but being willing to consider options that may be outside one's comfort zone. Austin points to three major developments that the pandemic has spurred on within the fitness industry (and how FlexIt has capitalized on them): livestreaming, pre-recorded content, and hardwire. “None of those categories are new,” he notes. “They just became more widely adopted, more widely marketed, and put in front of our faces more than they ever have been before.” Finally, Austin talks about some of the unique opportunities that virtual training can offer to fitness professionals, and why conducting successful online sessions as a coach is a radically different beast from training clients in-person.   Follow Austin @austin_flexit Follow FlexIt @flexit_fitness Follow Chase @chase_chewning   Episode resources: Save 15% on any metabolic health supplement with code CHASE at www.SugarBreak.com/chase Save 15% on grass fed beef sticks with code EVERFORWARD at www.Paleovalley.com

So, what is sleep fitness? Put simply, sleep fitness is a healthy state of sleep.  It's important that we talk about sleep not the context of illness, but in the context of vitality because sleep not only impacts the way you show up in the world each day, but it impacts your longevity, too. Michael Chernow believes that anyone can reinvent themselves. The New York-based restaurateur, TV host, and fitness personality came a long way, recalling a past defined by depression, unemployment, and crumbling relationships with his own family. “I hated myself, truly,” Michael admits. Everything changed one day when he walked into a Muay Thai gym and was gently yet firmly led by his instructors to live a life of physical wellness (which included a daily bowl of oatmeal for breakfast) along with a heavy dose of self-respect. Asked about fear, Michael distinguishes between living in fear and living with fear and why he believes that the key to growth is through giving up the former and learning to deal with the latter. As for his own fears, Michael says that he has never had a fear of failure, particularly once he had gotten on the road to turning his life around. Michael dives deep into the power of habit, which he illustrates by talking about his meticulous early morning routine involving around 17 activities. Michael contends that each of these activities, when done, is a win, and so “by 6:00 in the morning, I've literally won 17 times,” ensuring that his “ability to make great decisions throughout the day are far greater.” His strong belief in positive rituals—and oatmeal—was the spark that led to the launch of the lifestyle and wellness brand Kreatures of Habit and its plant-based, gluten-free, superfood-laced oatmeal The PrOATagonist.   Follow Michael @michaelchernow Follow Chase @chase_chewning   Episode resources: Get a year supply of vitamin D and five travel packets with your order of AG1 www.AthleticGreens.com/everforward Save 20% on your entire first purchase of Legion Athletics with code EVERFORWARD at www.LegionAthletics.com  Save 15% on Kreatures of Habit with code EVERFORWARD15 at https://kreaturesofhabit.com  Watch on YouTube at

Those interactions made her realize the intangible link – between the mind and the body, making her want to explore it in depth. Eventually, Niyc studied positive psychology and made it her mission to change the lives of humans using its principles. In today's discussion, Niyc and Chase unwind the core principles of positive psychology and how it drives noticeable change in the lives of humans. Niyc explains why positive psychology isn't only about happy things but instead involves finding the light in situations, however bad they may be. As research states, it's about finding ‘three positive emotions for every negative emotion' (the ratio may vary depending on your situation and state, but the principle stays intact). It's about breaking away from rumination and focussing on the ‘now'. You'll learn to differentiate a fixed mindset from a growth mindset and discover the huge importance of cultivating a growth mindset to stay positive. Moreover, you'll learn the changes that can be brought into your mindset by being non-judgmental, curious, and operating at your edge: all foundations to cultivating positive psychology. Mike is a staunch promoter of making fitness a lifestyle instead of a program. In his own words: “Instead of a 30-day plan, I want to show people how to create a 30-year plan.” Creating that 30-year plan for yourself requires going back to basics. Mike invokes the 80/20 rule, in which 80% of outcomes come from 20% of causes. The rule certainly applies to fitness, where a few fundamental principles—four in particular—can be responsible for the majority of results. Those four fundamental principles, which he dives into in today's conversation, are controlling your calories, eating a high-protein diet, consuming relatively nutritious and unprocessed foods, and working out three-to-six hours a week. Asked for his overall view of the role of fitness in one's life, Mike says, “I try not to make fitness my life, an end unto itself.” Instead, he looks at fitness as a tool that he uses in service of the things that really matter, such as relationships and career.   Follow Mike @muscleforlifefitness Follow Chase @chase_chewning   Episode resources: Save 20% on your entire first purchase with code EVERFORWARD at www.LegionAthletics.com  Get Mike's new book Muscle For Life at https://amzn.to/3JTz6VM  Ep. 292 "Training and dieting basics" Ep. 460 "Why you don't need supplements" Learn more at https://chasechewning.com/podcasts/episode/565

EFR 560: Good to Great Using Higher States of Consciousness with Jonathan de Potter

Jonathan de Potter is the Founder of Behold Retreats, a health and wellness platform that provides holistic plant medicine programs in beautiful, conscious, and soulful locations. He advocates unlocking true human potential by tapping into the inner self using holistic practices and plant medicine, a journey that stemmed from his desire to find his own life's purpose. In 2016, as an atheist confined in the corporate web, Jonathan took a year off from his full-time job for his first-ever plant medicine retreat in Peru. Humbled by the experience, he started spending more time researching plant medicine, and in the process, realized its connection with the human subconscious and how it helps embody life with more purpose and meaning. Today, he imparts this learning and wisdom as a healing facilitator to help transform the lives of many more people, unlike popular practice that consolidates knowledge into a product or periodic program. In today's conversation, Jonathan explores what it takes to master the journey of a true healer, including profound connection and surrendering for deeper exploration of the subconscious and conscious realms. Moreover, he intertwines science, culture, and the community's power to explain energetic interactions (that exist beyond your physical body) and talks about using plant-based medicines to intentionally release inherent trauma or lower-level energies to live a more conscious, content life. But what if your life is already free of the said trauma and is as happy as you know it? Is there a higher level of self you could experience? As Jonathan explains, there's a level beyond your present state of consciousness that involves greater trust and confidence in the universe; a life that serves not only you but also inspires the world outside you. That's where energetic healing has the potential to take you.   Follow Jonathan @behold_retreats Follow Chase @chase_chewning   Episode resources: Save 30% on any Organifi superfood product with code EVERFORWARD now through Dec 31, 2021 at www.Organifi.com/everforward  Save 15% on any Cured Nutrition functional mushroom and CBD product with code EVERFORWARD at www.CuredNutrition.com  Learn more and get complete show notes at https://chasechewning.com/podcasts/episode/560

Heart rate variability, or HRV, is an essential parameter to measure your heart health and stress levels at any point. While a higher variability of the metric signals that your body can push past strenuous exercises some more, a lower measure is an indication that it needs a break. Today we explore identified ways to improve your HRV – and all that they demand of you are simple, conscious changes in your everyday habits. Chase uses his personal story and backable science to teach you 10 simple tips that improve HRV. Referencing Mark Van Deusen's article on Heart Rate Variability (Whoop), he touches on its nervous system origination, significance, stress impact, and applications so you can know why the HRV is a breakthrough metric for wellness. In addition, you'll learn about the body's regulatory processes of homeostasis and allostasis that are responsible for maintaining equilibrium despite internal and external changes (both central to your brain's stress handling mechanism). Challenges suck, but needless to say, they're an inevitable part of life. Whether they're personal or professional, they can strike when you least expect them and leave you feeling helpless and adrift… forcing you into situations you'd have never imagined before. What does it take to pull yourself from back there? How do you not fall apart? This week, Chase sits with Casey Adams on The Casey Adams Show podcast to revisit his journey as an ex-military man, health coach, and established podcaster, explaining how he reinvented himself continually to chase his passion despite the problems.  Burdened by a queue of stressors post his father's death, Chase battled with himself for years after the tragedy – physically, mentally, and emotionally, including an injury that led to reconstructive surgery in both his hips. The experience had a profound impact on his personal and professional life, and unexpectedly enough, turned it around for the better. Despite the odds, per his father's advice, Chase lives and advocates a life ever forward, one that's led by passion and a desire to do better. In this discussion, Chase breaks down his journey, explaining the pile-up of challenges and the succession of events that led him to the world of podcasts. Chase explains his uncompromising principles in life and how they've shaped his life's trajectory, the most important being a willingness to continually chase the next big thing and always show up. Matthew Paetz returns on Ever Forward Radio to share how he has been navigating the seemingly endless period of uncertainty brought about by the pandemic—particularly around how he has been striving to shift from being what he calls an “unconscious consumer” to being a “conscious creator”. “I'm creating a life I've never had by doing things I've never done,” says Matthew, adding that his focus has been on building on himself over his achievements. One of the major ways he has been doing this over the past 18 months is by immersing himself in the world of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy as a modality for addressing trauma. Matthew defines these guided sessions as “medicines for the soul”—contrasting it with alcohol which he calls “medicine for the ego”. He then breaks down the development of our ego and how these sessions allow you to detach from that ego and see your life from a completely different perspective. “These medicines, in a guided session, would be the greatest gift I could give the entire world,” says Matthew. He believes that, should the public embrace this gift, Western medicine as it pertains to mental health would be “eradicated” in a matter of months.   Follow Matthew @matthewpaetz Follow Chase @chase_chewning   Episode resources: Matthew first appeared in episode 383 Save 15% on Cured Nutrition with code EVERFORWARD at www.CuredNutrition.com  Learn more and watch the full video at https://chasechewning.com/podcasts/episode/556
