It's our final recap episode of the season, which means we're not only looking back at the seventh and final round of the Grand Prix, but the 2023 Grand Prix as a whole. Payson first sits down with Velo Reporter Betsy Welch to talk about the dynamic race at Big Sugar. With podiums in both the men's and women's fields that looked significantly different from usual and plenty of on-course carnage, they break down the biggest stories of the weekend. They also look back on the series as a whole, including how the media changed this year, the riders who burst onto the scene, and how they think the field will evolve next year. Then Payson chats with Ellen Campbell for a first-hand look at the women's race. Ellen talks about why she thinks separate starts for women are going to attract more talent to the women's ranks, and shares the highs and lows of her season. Lastly, Payson digs into the numbers to compare the power files of some of the top performers in last weekend's race, from scrappy solo attacks to a racer who had to dig into every ounce of endurance they had to hang onto their top 10 spot in the overall standings. As new addition to the Grand Prix series, the Rad Dirt Fest was an unknown quantity for many of the racers last weekend. Alexey Vermeulen and Lauren De Crescenzo came away with the wins, shaking up the standings and setting the stage for the final race in Bentonville at the end of the month. In this recap episode, Payson catches up with Velo reporter Betsy Welch to talk about the race. Did it resemble Steamboat as the rumors claimed? Was it techy enough? Was it strange to race without points leaders Keegan Swenson and Sofia Gomez Villafane? In addition to answering these questions, they debate whether the era of mass starts at gravel races has come to an end, and go over Payson's front-row seat to the women's finish. We also hear from Ellen Campbell about her impressions of the course and how the women's race played out. She talks about the chaotic start, her favorite part of the course, and what she hopes will change in the future. Lastly, Payson digs into the power files of Alexey and Lauren to see just what it took to land on the top step of the podium at this event. In our latest recap of the Life Time Grand Prix series, we're covering Chequamegon, the punchy, 40 mile mountain bike race in Northern Wisconsin. This year's event saw new riders at the front of the pack and drama in the sprint finishes. Payson talks to Velo reporter Betsy Welch to break down the men's race and Alexy Vermeulen's win. They discuss the 14-man sprint to the finish, the relief of a 40-mile race in the middle of a season dominated by 100+ mile events, and look at the current rider standings. They also look back at Gravel Nationals and look ahead to Gravel Worlds.Ellen Campbell joins the show to provide a first-person account of the women's race. She talks about the crowded course, the contentious jockeying for position, and the riders who stood out. Payson also digs into some of the riders' power files to provide some data analysis, and we hear from listeners who competed in the race. Instagram: @theadventurestache
There was one story that dominated Leadville this year. Keegan Swenson smashed the course record by more than 15 minutes and finished nearly 25 minutes ahead of second place. On the women's side, Sofia Gómez Villafañe won a tight battle among the top five, followed closely by Ruth Winder. In our recap, Payson chats with Velo reporter Betsy Welch about how good both the men's and women's fields have gotten this year, and where Keegan's dominance leaves the rest of the racers. For a first-hand perspective on the women's race, we hear from Ellen Campbell, who came to Leadville this year hoping to top her 7th place result last year. She talks about the dynamics of the women's race, how they used Tobin Ortenblad's blistering lead-out to their advantage, and why pee breaks can make or break the race in the women's field. Lastly, Payson breaks down Keegan's power numbers to see just what it took to achieve such a stunning result. Check out Payson's new film "Crossing Tasmania" here: https://youtu.be/eqI-hKkUoKwInstagram: @theadventurestache
Ellen Campbell has been riding bikes since she was a kid growing up in Durango, Colorado. She raced in college and on the national circuit, but it was only last year that she decided to step into professional gravel full-time. Joining Sarah Sturm's privateer program, she competed in the Grand Prix in 2022 with the goal of finishing every race. This year, she's racing in the Grand Prix again, but her perspective and goals are shifting. In this interview, Ellen tells Payson about why she made up her mind to go professional during a stressful weekend helping her partner, Howard Grotts, and Sarah at Leadville. They also talk about enneagrams, why her mindset on racing has changed this season, and what she thinks people got wrong about this year's Unbound debate.Instagram: @theadventurestache
Like many folks born and raised in Durango, Ellen Campbell started riding bikes at a young age and never looked back. She attended Fort Lewis College and was part of the college's famous cycling program. Ellen describes how the coaches and mentors that she has had in her cycling career have helped her progress, and how she is now giving back to the sport as a mentor coach for the local DEVO mountain bike program. Before entering the Lifetime Grand Prix last year Ellen had never ridden over 100 miles. Now in her second year of the series, Ellen tells us the lessons that she is carrying with her into this year that she learned from her rookie season. Announcement: Terrence Shulman, overspending/hoarding/shoplifting therapist joins #MOTM tonight at 8p ET! Tonight on #MOTM, Terence Shulman, founder and Director of The Shulman Center for Compulsive Theft, Spending and Hoarding joins Dr. Peter Sacco and Todd Miller to discuss the definitions of these mental health disorders, how they impact people in the real world, and the various services the Shulman Center offers, both in person and via Skype to overcome their problems. According to the Journal of Consumer Research, 25 million Americans may be compulsive over shoppers and spenders! According to the FBI, Employee theft is “the fastest growing crime in America!” And I think we’ve all watched one of those hoarding shows like “Buried Alive” that shows someone living in conditions where they are absolutely in danger of being crushed by piles of things they’ve collected over the years. Excessive hoarding and cluttering can take over and make you feel out of control. Millions of people suffer from this frustration and embarrassment. And as Terrence says on the show, this is not about a hobby like stamp or record collecting, or even fashion shopping. When the shopping becomes the thrill, then there is a serious problem. And the holidays can exacerbate the situation of finding the perfect present at ANY cost. Join us tonight as we delve into these tricky conditions. Contact Terrence Shulman Web: http://www.TheShulmanCenter.com We also have our weekly chat with the Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness, joining us this week is Ellen Campbell talking about the 13 Days Of Christmas on Q107 ending next week. Announcement: Martina Boone, #author of “Compulsion” joins #MOTM tonight at 8p ET to discuss #bullying… Announcement: Martina Boone, #author of “Compulsion” joins #MOTM tonight at 8p ET to discuss #bullying… Martina was born in what is now the Czech Republic and moved to the United States when she was seven, and she spoke several languages before learning English. Her first year here, Her teacher made fun of her in front of the whole class for not being able to make the “wh” sound. She promised herself right then she was going to master every single word in the English language. This early occurrence of bullying would cause her to question her relationships with authority figures, those most entrusted to shape our characters in our early days. And she joins Dr. Peter Sacco and Todd Miller to talk about those early experiences and how her books can help teens avoid bullying. Wrestling with words sparked an interest in writing, one that she has fully embraced with “Compulsion” and the sequel, “Persuasion“, hitting the bookshelves in October of 2015. Compulsion, her first book for teens from Simon & Schuster/Simon Pulse, is a SIBA Book Award nominee, an RT Book Reviews Top Pick and Editors’ Best of 2014 selection, a USA Today “Must-Read Paranormal,” and a Goodreads Best Book of the Month and Best YA Book of the Month. Rugger Burke The Power of 10, Rugger Burke (wisdom, inspirational, nonfiction, adult) The Power of 10 is a practice for engaging the voice of wisdom through inquiry and advocacy. Inquiry raises our awareness of what is through inviting us to examine our current state of being; advocacy prompts us to live into what is possible. Together, inquiry and advocacy evoke the voice of wisdom–the quiet, still voice inside us, the confluence of knowledge, experience, and insight flowing through all living beings that speaks through our bodies, hearts, and minds. As we learn to listen to it closely, the voice of wisdom reveals our true nature and purpose, calls on us to commit to something greater, and guides us toward being our best selves in every thought, word, and action. At its heart, The Power of 10 sensitizes us to our own, unique purpose, and helps us discover that spark of the divine at the core of our being. Put simply, it is a practice for engaging your voice of wisdom to become the greatest you–the you who is meant to be. We chatted with Rugger about how the book is structured to enable you to make progress each day, so that you are not overwhelmed, but that you see gradual progress, all the time! We also chatted about being deliberate vs. cautious, and how Rugger himself did not start down this path of intentional living until some life crises caused him to reevaluate where he was headed. To find out more about Rugger, please visit: The Power of 10 on Amazon We also have our weekly chat with Ellen Campbell from the Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness, this week talking about their upcoming workshop men that wish to move past being physically and sexually abused, and Ellen shares a bit more about her story. https://soundcloud.com/rtds/sets/matters-of-the-mind Hear Rugger Burke and Ellen Campbell on “Matters Of The Mind” with Dr. Peter Sacco at 8p EST on Wednesday by clicking the Listen Live button at the top right of the page, but if you miss it, it will be on demand Thursday, right here, or find us on iTunes podcast at https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/rtds-listen-up-talk/id910538503?mt=2 Rugger Burke at Tedx: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6zqyV1wX0s #mentalhealth, #depression, #endstigma, #BellLetsTalk, #mentalillness, #mhcanada, #nokiddingmetoo, #nkm2, #addiction, #recovery, #ADD, #autism, #ASD, #kidsmentalhealth, #CCAA, #CMHO, #HubertCrouch, #EllenCampbell, #sexualabuse, #suicide, #bipolar, #schizophrenia, #ADHD, #MattersOfTheMind, #MentalHealthMatters, #author, #books, #religious, #fanaticism, #sharia, #law, #immigration, #libertyslostyear, #JeffLiberty, #RuggerBurke, #ThePowerOf10, #Amazon

I won't type too much here, but Jeff has experienced some horrific things in his life that lead to a year long battle with depression, including losing his house, his kids into care, being placed on suicide watch, drinking to numb the pain, and more. We delved into his incredible journey to healing and as he says he's in 'remission' from depression, and like any other illness, always aware of his triggers, always protective of his mental health. He also takes care of his body and soul, while also practicing gratitude - just being thankful for the small things in life, like the beautiful blue sky he noticed today while on our show, and celebrating his daughter's graduation this week. It's the small stuff that counts... #libertyslostyear Jeff reaches out continuously to share his story with schools in New Brunswick and has shared the stage with Clara Hughes, another shining Canadian star in the battle to remove the stigma of mental dis-ease. Ellen believes we need this here and it is legal in Canada to do this, but the policies need to be put in place in Ontario to communicate this to EMS, hospitals and law enforcement. The fantastic President of the Canadian Centre For Abuse Awareness, Sanderson Layng, joins Dr. Peter Sacco and Todd Miller tonight at 8p EST to discuss all aspects of #bullying, both ‘real’ and cyberbullying. The real costs are astronomical, and the impacts very real, as Sanderson relays one story of a particular family that needed to move from the US to Canada to escape bullying. From the CCAA website: “Over 20 years ago, Ellen Campbell approached Sanderson Layng at a police conference and introduced the concept of a national organization addressing the needs of sexual abuse survivors. At the time, Sanderson was serving as president of the Alliance for a Drug-Free Canada , a national corporately supported charity that focused on issues related to drugs and alcohol in the workplace. Ellen helped Sanderson to understand the relationship between drug abuse and the trauma that comes as a result of childhood sexual abuse. Ellen asked Sanderson to help her create a new organization including incorporation and a Board of Directors. The new organization would be survivor friendly with a mandate to always put survivors first in all planning and programs. Sanderson agreed and became the first Chairman of the Board, a position he was elected to for 12 consecutive years by his fellow Directors. In recognition of his service as Chair of CCAA, Sanderson was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for service to Canadians and Canada. In 1999, when Ken Dryden, president of the Toronto Maple Leafs, needed expert assistance with the sex abuse scandal brought to public attention by Martin Kruze, it was Sanderson who was hired by the Maple Leafs to set up a counselling program to respond to the needs of those survivors. The innovative model adopted for this approach is now a template for other programs working with abuse survivors including CCAA’s work with First Nations survivors of residential school abuse. Sanderson resigned as Chair in 2005 but continued to serve as Past Chair and Executive Vice-Chair on the Board. In May of 2009, the Directors asked Sanderson to work more directly with the organization to look after administration and compliance as well as operations which led to him to serving as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. During this time, Sanderson maintained his own career undertakings as an award winning television producer and he still serves today as the Executive Producer of “Living Clean Living Well”, CCAA’s weekly live television show on the CTS television network. This show is the only one of its kind in Canada dealing with abuse, addictions and mental health issues. In 2012, “Living Clean Living Well” was awarded the Peter Armstrong Award of Excellence for Community Service. Sanderson was appointed President on June 1st, 2013.” Catch up with the #CCAA here: http://www.AbuseHurts.ca https://twitter.com/Abusehurtscom Hear Sanderson on “Matters Of The Mind” with Dr. Peter Sacco, at 8p EST on Wednesday, but if you miss it, it will be on demand Thursday, right here! #AbuseHurts.ca, #AbuseHurts.com, #CCAA, #kendryden, #leafs, #martinkruze, #mentalhealth, #podcast, #SandersonLayng, #selfesteem, #stopbullying, #tml, #TMLTalk, #torontomapleleafs, #bullying, #charity, #cyberbullying
