The congressional hearings surrounding Jeffrey Epstein are less about justice and more about optics. Behind the staged outrage, secret depositions, and selective leaks lies a carefully managed narrative meant to pacify the public while protecting the powerful. Key figures tied to the original Non-Prosecution Agreement—Acosta, Mukasey, Filip, Menschel, Villafaña—have never been subpoenaed, a glaring omission that reveals the process is not about uncovering truth but about burying it. Rather than transparency, we are handed redactions, secrecy, and closed-door questioning that serve only to shield institutions complicit in Epstein's protection. What the public is witnessing is a modern-day bread and circus. Instead of gladiators, we are given congressional theatrics designed to create the illusion of accountability while ensuring nothing of substance changes. Survivors remain sidelined, critical testimony is hidden, and the system that enabled Epstein continues untouched. The hearings are not a path to justice but a spectacle of distraction, meant to drain outrage, exhaust demands for truth, and keep the machinery of power intact. Until the curtain of secrecy is torn down, accountability will remain an illusion.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

In a sworn affidavit filed in 2017, Marie Villafaña, a Department of Justice official, laid out the government's formal defense of how federal prosecutors handled the Crime Victims' Rights Act during the Jeffrey Epstein non-prosecution agreement. Her core argument was that the CVRA's notice and participation requirements did not apply because Epstein had not been federally charged at the time the deal was negotiated, framing the agreement as a pre-charge exercise of prosecutorial discretion rather than a criminal proceeding triggering victims' rights. Villafaña asserted that prosecutors were operating within long-standing DOJ interpretations of the law, emphasizing that the CVRA was never intended to require victim notification during confidential plea negotiations or before formal charges were filed. She presented the government's position as legally cautious rather than deceptive, insisting that secrecy was necessary to preserve the integrity of negotiations and avoid jeopardizing a potential federal case.Villafaña also used the affidavit to push back against allegations that prosecutors intentionally misled Epstein's victims or acted in bad faith, repeatedly stressing that DOJ personnel believed they were complying with the law as it was understood at the time. She argued that internal DOJ guidance supported limiting disclosure to victims before charges, and that there was no clear judicial precedent then requiring broader notification under the CVRA in pre-indictment settings. Framed this way, the affidavit portrayed the Epstein deal not as a calculated effort to sidestep victims' rights, but as a legally defensible—if controversial—exercise of prosecutorial judgment. That position would later come under severe criticism from courts and victims' advocates, but in 2017 Villafaña's filing stood as the DOJ's most explicit attempt to justify its handling of the Epstein case under the CVRA.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:gov.uscourts.flsd.317867.403.19.pdfBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-moscow-murders-and-more--5852883/support.

Sofia Gomez Villafañe has many accolades to her name. Olympian, winner of the Cape Epic, winner of Unbound, and winner of Leadville are just a few of her claims to fame, and she also happens to be this year's winner of the Life Time Grand Prix after clinching the overall victory in just five races. Payson caught up with Sofia a few days before the seventh and final round of the series in Bentonville, Arkansas for a wide-ranging and long overdue conversation. In this episode, Sofia talks about how approaching cycling as a career rather than a passion has shaped her life on and off the bike, and how her single-minded approach to racing has led to consistent success. She discusses whether her goals will shift next year now that she's won the Grand Prix and how she thinks the tactics in the series will evolve now that the riders know the courses so well. She talks about moving to the U.S. from Patagonia when she was 12, and how her goals as a cyclist changed after she met her partner, Keegan Swenson, and her coach. She also addresses how we handled the ice pack controversy at Unbound, and the less dramatic reality behind it. Instagram: @theadventurestache

There was one story that dominated Leadville this year. Keegan Swenson smashed the course record by more than 15 minutes and finished nearly 25 minutes ahead of second place. On the women's side, Sofia Gómez Villafañe won a tight battle among the top five, followed closely by Ruth Winder. In our recap, Payson chats with Velo reporter Betsy Welch about how good both the men's and women's fields have gotten this year, and where Keegan's dominance leaves the rest of the racers. For a first-hand perspective on the women's race, we hear from Ellen Campbell, who came to Leadville this year hoping to top her 7th place result last year. She talks about the dynamics of the women's race, how they used Tobin Ortenblad's blistering lead-out to their advantage, and why pee breaks can make or break the race in the women's field. Lastly, Payson breaks down Keegan's power numbers to see just what it took to achieve such a stunning result. The third round of the Life Time Grand Prix is an Infamous gravel race in Southwest Utah with over 10,000 feet of climbing over a punchy 69-mile course. This year's race was defined by a distinct lack of drama, but it was still historic. Keegan Swenson became the first (and only) rider in the event's history to finish in under four hours, while Sofía Gómez Villafañe smashed the women's record by more than six minutes. Payson and Velo reporter Betsy Welch talk about these wins as well as some of the other noteworthy finishes. From Matt Beers to Paige Onweller, there were many riders who staked their claim on the leaderboard last week with breakout performances. One of the riders with an attention-grabbing race was Nathan Spratt, an Indiana native who started racing gravel in 2022 after years of racing on the road.
