Announcement: Terrence Shulman, overspending/hoarding/shoplifting therapist joins #MOTM tonight at 8p ET! Tonight on #MOTM, Terence Shulman, founder and Director of The Shulman Center for Compulsive Theft, Spending and Hoarding joins Dr. Peter Sacco and Todd Miller to discuss the definitions of these mental health disorders, how they impact people in the real world, and the various services the Shulman Center offers, both in person and via Skype to overcome their problems. According to the Journal of Consumer Research, 25 million Americans may be compulsive over shoppers and spenders! According to the FBI, Employee theft is “the fastest growing crime in America!” And I think we’ve all watched one of those hoarding shows like “Buried Alive” that shows someone living in conditions where they are absolutely in danger of being crushed by piles of things they’ve collected over the years. Excessive hoarding and cluttering can take over and make you feel out of control. Millions of people suffer from this frustration and embarrassment. Her first year here, Her teacher made fun of her in front of the whole class for not being able to make the “wh” sound. This early occurrence of bullying would cause her to question her relationships with authority figures, those most entrusted to shape our characters in our early days. And she joins Dr. Peter Sacco and Todd Miller to talk about those early experiences and how her books can help teens avoid bullying. Wrestling with words sparked an interest in writing, one that she has fully embraced with “Compulsion” and the sequel, “Persuasion“, hitting the bookshelves in October of 2015. Rugger Burke The Power of 10, Rugger Burke (wisdom, inspirational, nonfiction, adult) The Power of 10 is a practice for engaging the voice of wisdom through inquiry and advocacy. Inquiry raises our awareness of what is through inviting us to examine our current state of being; advocacy prompts us to live into what is possible. Together, inquiry and advocacy evoke the voice of wisdom–the quiet, still voice inside us, the confluence of knowledge, experience, and insight flowing through all living beings that speaks through our bodies, hearts, and minds. As we learn to listen to it closely, the voice of wisdom reveals our true nature and purpose, calls on us to commit to something greater, and guides us toward being our best selves in every thought, word, and action. At its heart, The Power of 10 sensitizes us to our own, unique purpose, and helps us discover that spark of the divine at the core of our being. Put simply, it is a practice for engaging your voice of wisdom to become the greatest you–the you who is meant to be. We chatted with Rugger about how the book is structured to enable you to make progress each day, so that you are not overwhelmed, but that you see gradual progress, all the time! We also chatted about being deliberate vs. cautious, and how Rugger himself did not start down this path of intentional living until some life crises caused him to reevaluate where he was headed. What an incredible interview today! Getting to chat with radio host, publicist and promoter, TV host and self proclaimed "if you need something sold, I can sell it!" salesman Jeff Liberty, was a true honour today. I won't type too much here, but Jeff has experienced some horrific things in his life that lead to a year long battle with depression, including losing his house, his kids into care, being placed on suicide watch, drinking to numb the pain, and more. We delved into his incredible journey to healing and as he says he's in 'remission' from depression, and like any other illness, always aware of his triggers, always protective of his mental health. He also takes care of his body and soul, while also practicing gratitude - just being thankful for the small things in life, like the beautiful blue sky he noticed today while on our show, and celebrating his daughter's graduation this week. It's the small stuff that counts... #libertyslostyear Jeff reaches out continuously to share his story with schools in New Brunswick and has shared the stage with Clara Hughes, another shining Canadian star in the battle to remove the stigma of mental dis-ease. To find out more about Jeff, please visit: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Libertyslostyear/1386442901676912?fref=ts We also have our weekly chat with Ellen Campbell from the Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness, this week talking about 'Safe Haven', an initiative in the US to ensure that mothers that don't want their babies can drop them off safely at a hospital OR have an ambulance pick them them as "Jane Doe" and take them to hospital to deliver the babies with NO criminal charges. Ellen believes we need this here and it is legal in Canada to do this, but the policies need to be put in place in Ontario to communicate this to EMS, hospitals and law enforcement. Lovers of legal thrillers will rejoice in this gripping, timely page-turner about religious fanaticism, freedom of speech, courtroom intrigue, and high-stakes mystery. Ezekiel Shaw and his fanatical followers preach a gospel of hate, picketing the funerals of fallen soldiers, and praising God for sending America’s soldiers back in body bags. But when they disrupt the funeral of Second Lieutenant Lauren Hanson, a West Point graduate killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan, hard-charging Fort Worth trial attorney Jace Forman becomes determined to put an end to their crazed crusade no matter the cost. As Jace and reporter Leah Rosen battle the odds and the clock in pursuit of justice and truth in the courts, they draw closer to uncovering a shocking conspiracy—and facing sinister forces that will stop at nothing to keep them from revealing the truth. “Religious extremism is a very dangerous and powerful force,” said Crouch. “It threatens our First Amendment rights and has been used to suppress women’s rights throughout the world (including our own country).” Blending fast-paced action with authentic courtroom drama, The Word will keep readers enthralled from its explosive prologue to nail-biting conclusion. Florence Ann Romano started working as a nanny when she was just 12 years old, and now she’s sharing those cherished memories in her debut book for children making the transition from being cared for solely by their parents to having a nanny in their home. Florence joins Dr. Peter Sacco and Todd Miller on “Matters Of The Mind” tonight at 8p ET to discuss her experience as both a nanny and now author! “Nanny and Me” (May 2015, Mascot Books) is a story told through the eyes of a young girl about all of the adventures she and her little brother have with their nanny. Romano modeled the nanny in her book after herself, and each scene was inspired by her personal experiences caring for children. Romano wants children to read “Nanny and Me” – or have it read to them – and feel a sense of excitement, peace and joy wash over them. The modern day Mary Poppins wants kids to look forward to the time they spend with their new friend, and most of all, wants them to feel loved. I don’t want them to be afraid or upset; or for them to think they did something wrong; or think that Mommy and Daddy don’t love them enough to care for them,” she says. “I want this transition to be a sweet one…something to look forward to and treasure; and I want the kids to understand that the nanny is an extension of their parents.” Romano describes a nanny as “someone who can care for your child, love your child, be invested in your child and protect your child just as you, the parent, would.” “The nanny is Mom and Dad’s eyes, ears and heart,”she adds. Romano hopes parents get just as much out of her book as the children, if not more. Gayle asks, "Did you ever feel like you were born into the wrong family?" Perhaps you aren't quite like your siblings, or there are different rules for you than them. You wonder if you are adopted, as there is constant criticism about your entire being. Or your mother tells you, when you're a girl, that you were supposed to be a boy. Gary, not Gayle. Do you have childhood scars? This is the subject matter of "Look at us NOW Mother!", an amazing new film chronicling the early years right up to present day of Gayle Kirschenbaum's difficult relationship with her mother, and the process that she goes through to understand her mother's upbringing, and how it impacted her parenting style, and ultimately Gayle's well being. Her journey to filmmaking began with a short film called "My Nose" that was created when her mother continued to badger her to get a nose job, and she agreed to attend a consult, as long as she could document the appointment on film. She did the appointment, but the resulting short was discovered and caused quite a stir, and critics were unanimous: “Dazzling self-confidence.” - Washington Post “Hilarious romp” - Jewish Week “A big little movie” - Thrive Gayle says: "Audiences wanted to know how I handled my highly critical mother. After screenings audience members shared their stories. Unexpectedly, I found myself teaching people how I did it by using my “Seven Healing Tools” on how to transform abusive relationships. I soon realized, as a filmmaker who has a huge archive of footage and funny and smart mother who was agreeable, that it was my mission to tell my whole story. That’s why I made this deeply personal feature documentary, LOOK AT US NOW, MOTHER! " Gayle is candid about some of the things you'll see in the movie, as well as the ongoing relationship with her mother, and also discovering more about her abusive father and her father's 'henchman', her brothers. Not only did she survive this childhood trauma, she is now thriving to tell her story, after telling others' stories as a filmmaker, but endeavouring to help others now. Gayle adds: "As I launch this film into the world, my mission is to help others. And together with an incredible team, we will build a movement to do that and welcome your support and participation." Who knew there was so much fascinating information that could be learned from a midwife? And one that also is a USA Today bestselling one too! Patricia Harman is our guest tonight on “Matters Of The Mind” with Dr. Peter Sacco, and we touch upon what a midwife does, what kind of training they can receive (as we found out there are various kinds of midwives), how much they can actually do, the various benefits and risks of home birthing, AND…finally, we talked about her historical novels about a reluctant midwife :-) Is midwifery on the upswing and becoming more popular Patricia is a wealth of knowledge, and supports both the pregnant mom and her partner, almost equally. Obviously, the pregnant mom requires more direct assistance, but can be a great help to a nervous, new father about what to do and NOT to do during the birth event. Good advice :-) Also, a midwife does not replace a partner during birthing, but becomes a director of sorts, an adviser, a coach. We also discussed how midwives can also potentially be pseudo psychologists, therapists, coaches and more during both the prenatal time, and post natal as well, as they typically spend more time with their patients than an OB/GYN does, due to various factors, none of which is poor care, but availability as well. Tune in tonight at 8 pm for "Matters Of The Mind", as Dr. Peter Sacco and Todd Miller have a great conversation with author, writer, actor and musician Lorraine Devon Wilke. Talk about a cultural gypsy! We talk about Lorraine's soon-to-be-released book "Hysterical Love" as well as her previous novels, "She Tumbled Down" and "After The Sucker Punch". Hysterical Love is a fictional story about Dan McDowell, a thirty-three-year-old portrait photographer happily set to marry his beloved Jane, who is stunned when a slip of the tongue about an “ex-girlfriend overlap” of years earlier throws their pending marriage into doubt and him onto the street. Or at least into the second bedroom of their next-door neighbor, Bob, where Dan is sure it won't be long. It's long. His sister, Lucy, further confuses matters with her “soul mate theory” and its suggestion that Jane might not be his... soul mate, that is. But the tipping point comes when his father is struck ill, sparking a chain of events in which Dan discovers a story written by this man he doesn’t readily understand, but who, it seems, has long harbored an unrequited love from decades earlier. Incapable of fixing his own romantic dilemma, Dan becomes fixated on finding this woman of his father’s dreams and sets off for Oakland, California, on a mission fraught with detours and semi-hilarious peril. Along the way he meets the beautiful Fiona, herbalist and flower child, who assists in his quest while quietly and erotically shaking up his world. When, against all odds, he finds the elusive woman from the past, the ultimate discovery of how she truly fit into his father's life leaves him staggered, as does the reality of what’s been stirred up with Fiona. But it’s when he returns home to yet another set of unexpected truths that he’s shaken to the core, ultimately forced to face who he is and just whom he might be able to love. We also had a great chat about the mystery of writing; the various forms of writing, whether for books, films or for her columns in The Huffington Post; as well as shifting gears between the various things she does, including music. "After The Sucker Punch" deals with her experiences in finding her father's journals, revealing his true feelings for Lorraine, and the aftermath of that. While a fictionalized account of her experience, it becomes a cathartic journey for those that read the book. Announcement: Nina Gaby, #author of “Dumped: Stories of Women Unfriending Women” joins Matters Of The Mind tonight at 8p EST! Nina Gaby, editor of the the book “Dumped: Stories of Women Unfriending Women”, chats with Dr. Peter Sacco and Todd Miller about the book , as well as other topics such as why there is an apparent difference between male and female ‘refriending’, and also chat about Patricia Arquette’s Oscar speech! Why do women ‘dump’ other women? This book is full of candid, relatable stories by established and emerging women writers about being discarded by someone from whom they expected more: a close female friend. There are 161 million women in the USA today, and our friendships are still as primary and universal as back when Ruth and Naomi, Elizabeth and Susan B., and Thelma and Louise made history. When a romantic relationship breaks up, no problem—there’s an Adele song for that. Health concerns; problems in school; issues at the workplace? We’ve got our chums to prop us up. Until we don’t. When our most sustaining relationships dissolve—those with the women friends in our lives—there’s never been the fanfare that accompanies the loss of other relationships society deems “more important.” Until now. In Dumped: Stories of Women Unfriending Women, twenty-five established and emerging writers—including Jacquelyn Mitchard, Ann Hood, Carrie Kabak, Jessica Handler, Elizabeth Searle, Alexis Paige, and editor Nina Gaby—explore the fragile, sometimes humorous, and often unfathomable nature of lost friendship. These, like your own, are stories that stay with you—maybe for a lifetime. Neil Spector is a leading oncologist at Duke University Medical Center whose terrifying misdiagnosis almost resulted in his death. His story is one of personal struggle, hope, survival and advocacy. He was in peak physical health when he began experiencing bizarre symptoms that doctors attributed to stress, but Neil suspected there was something much more serious going on. After years of inconclusive results and more than a decade of living with only 10% heart function, a series of life threatening complications resulted in heart failure. Neil even considered taking his own life after being told he had only 72 hours to live without a heart transplant. Fortunately for Neil, he survived with a miraculous heart transplant and has become an advocate for patient care and protection. In addition to his own experience from the perspective of a patient and a doctor, Neil can talk about the pitfalls of the medical system, what patients need to know to protect themselves and his medical research among other topics. Neil chronicled his experience in a new book, “Gone in a Heartbeat – A Physician’s Search for True Healing” that came out on Feb. 14. Neil joined us to chat about the book, his incredible 11 year journey to the root cause of his health issues, as well as a few near-death experiences, where his heart rate skyrocketed and he felt the end was near, if not for a ‘warmth’ that enveloped him and made him feel safe! What do the Accused Boston Marathon Bombers have in common with a Sri Lankan teenager who wanted to be a nun, a Tunisian honors student, and a Norwegian who wanted to be a physician? Preventing “home grown” terrorism starts with understanding why and how young people all over the world are becoming radicalized, recruited, and convinced that the best way to a meaningful life is through violence. Terrorism expert Alice LoCicero has spent years researching this phenomenon, spending time with survivors of horrific terrorist attacks providing comfort and guidance, and getting inside the minds of these radicals. She talked about the importance of good parenting, but also that it takes a village to raise a child. As well, more people are killed in traffic accidents in the United States than by terrorism, so although we need to keep a watchful eye on why recruiters are targeting our children, we also need to remain calm and keep things in perspective. Her book, “Why Good Kids Turn Into Deadly Terrorists”, helps parents, educators and law enforcement understand the motives and tools used to turn these kids against society, and work towards eradicating terrorism. And tonight she joins Dr. Peter Sacco and Todd Miller in a deep conversation about abuse, childhood trauma and other situations the force young women into a life of prostitution, and how Thistle Farms is offering help to rewrite their stories! She demonstrates that love is good business and raises millions of dollars annually for the organizations she runs. The fantastic President of the Canadian Centre For Abuse Awareness, Sanderson Layng, joins Dr. Peter Sacco and Todd Miller tonight at 8p EST to discuss all aspects of #bullying, both ‘real’ and cyberbullying. The real costs are astronomical, and the impacts very real, as Sanderson relays one story of a particular family that needed to move from the US to Canada to escape bullying. From the CCAA website: “Over 20 years ago, Ellen Campbell approached Sanderson Layng at a police conference and introduced the concept of a national organization addressing the needs of sexual abuse survivors. At the time, Sanderson was serving as president of the Alliance for a Drug-Free Canada , a national corporately supported charity that focused on issues related to drugs and alcohol in the workplace. Ellen helped Sanderson to understand the relationship between drug abuse and the trauma that comes as a result of childhood sexual abuse. Ellen asked Sanderson to help her create a new organization including incorporation and a Board of Directors. The new organization would be survivor friendly with a mandate to always put survivors first in all planning and programs. Sanderson agreed and became the first Chairman of the Board, a position he was elected to for 12 consecutive years by his fellow Directors. In recognition of his service as Chair of CCAA, Sanderson was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for service to Canadians and Canada. In 1999, when Ken Dryden, president of the Toronto Maple Leafs, needed expert assistance with the sex abuse scandal brought to public attention by Martin Kruze, it was Sanderson who was hired by the Maple Leafs to set up a counselling program to respond to the needs of those survivors. The innovative model adopted for this approach is now a template for other programs working with abuse survivors including CCAA’s work with First Nations survivors of residential school abuse. Sanderson resigned as Chair in 2005 but continued to serve as Past Chair and Executive Vice-Chair on the Board. In May of 2009, the Directors asked Sanderson to work more directly with the organization to look after administration and compliance as well as operations which led to him to serving as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. During this time, Sanderson maintained his own career undertakings as an award winning television producer and he still serves today as the Executive Producer of “Living Clean Living Well”, CCAA’s weekly live television show on the CTS television network. This show is the only one of its kind in Canada dealing with abuse, addictions and mental health issues. In 2012, “Living Clean Living Well” was awarded the Peter Armstrong Award of Excellence for Community Service. Sanderson was appointed President on June 1st, 2013.” Catch up with the #CCAA here: http://www.AbuseHurts.ca https://twitter.com/Abusehurtscom Hear Sanderson on “Matters Of The Mind” with Dr. Peter Sacco, at 8p EST on Wednesday, but if you miss it, it will be on demand Thursday, right here! #AbuseHurts.ca, #AbuseHurts.com, #CCAA, #kendryden, #leafs, #martinkruze, #mentalhealth, #podcast, #SandersonLayng, #selfesteem, #stopbullying, #tml, #TMLTalk, #torontomapleleafs, #bullying, #charity, #cyberbullying

ZOMBIES! The Walking Dead! Army Of Darkness! Shaun Of The Dead! The “ZombieSquad” joins “Matters Of The Mind” this Wed at 8p ET! There have been movies about zombies for decades, but in recent years the appreciation for the ‘undead’ has reached mass saturation, leading to the incredible success of TV shows like “The Walking Dead” and movies such as “Army Of Darkness”, “Shaun Of The Dead” and perhaps the originator of the modern genre, “Night Of The Living Dead”. We examine this phenomenon on this week’s “Matters Of The Mind” with Dr. Peter Sacco, and have as our guest Aleks Rakocevic, President of the Southern Ontario chapter of Zombie Squad, a company whose mission is to educate the public about the importance of personal preparedness and self reliance, and to increase its readiness to respond to a number of disasters such as Earthquakes, Floods or Zombie Outbreaks. Our mission is to protect civilization from the infringement of the walking dead upon the rights of the living to a peaceful existence. Zombie Squad does this through the implementation of a three step plan of action. Find the Problem Through a combination of paid informants, tips from the public and our unique undead tracking techniques, Zombie Squad is constantly alert to incidents of revivification. Get to the Problem Any mobile strike force is dependent on a strong logistics and transportation arm in order to carry out it’s orders, and Zombie Squad is no different. Eliminate the Problem Information and logistics are an important part of the organization’s structure, but at its core, Zombie Squad is an elite strike force dedicated to the eradication of the undead in all theaters of combat. So watch the graveyards and mortuaries. Watch your friends and relatives. Be aware that the undead can be anywhere. Be ready for their attack. If you should encounter the undead menace, then don’t hesitate to call Zombie Squad.
