Today, we're happy to share an episode from Learn with Dr. Emily, where she interviews comedian and ADHDer, Penn Holderness. Enjoy! --- Growing up, Penn Holderness knew he was different than his friends. He had tics. He was called a spazz. He would cry really easily. In basketball practice, he would nearly chew through his shirt if he wasn't running around enough. If he was growing up in the 2020's, he'd be treated for ADHD pretty quickly. But back in the 80's, ADHD information wasn't widespread, and it wasn't until college that he was officially diagnosed. On today's episode, Penn talks about growing up with ADHD, finding his passion for music and performing arts, learning how to accept his limitations and lean into his superpowers, and how he would design a school for ADHD minds. I met Natascha at the [y]our2040 gathering in Switzerland in June this year and spoke to her for a short interview where I found out that she had been part of the Exxpedition Atlantic crossing and wanted to know more about it. Somehow we managed to also discuss differing opinions on feminism and identity politics and the value of common decency which just made it all the more interesting : ) Exxpedition is an all women's sailing voyage across different parts of the world's oceans where the participants collect data, mainly about plastics in the oceans with the help of trained professionals, founded by the skipper and ocean advocate Emily Penn. Natascha shares her memories from this three week voyage and the experiences and learnings that she had out on the water. Natascha is an outspoken feminist and wants to do her part to contribute to a whole and more just world in different ways. We open up a conversation about the meaning of feminism and other labels that people tend to give themselves and sometimes even feel obligated to. We try to get closer to the reasons for division and occasional misuses of different words and phrases and if they should even be as important as they are made out to be in today's "hyper aware and correct" political climate. This conversation touches on many different issues and thoughts that we feel should be discussed openly and in respectful manners - much more so without "cancelling" one another but rather inviting in discourse, trying to open ourselves up to different view points and realities. Like the currents of the ocean we let this conversation flow in different directions and we hope you enjoy this Talk

Emily Penn is a British sailor and the co-founder of eXXpedition - a series of all-women voyages exploring the impacts of plastics and toxins in our oceans. "The only way to reduce the potential impacts on human health and the environment is to reduce consumption," she says. But where to begin? For the next two years, a total of 300 women will sail around the world on eXXpedition's voyages of discovery, to look deep into what's going on with plastic in our oceans, and try to come up with solutions.  Why XX? Women are underrepresented in science and sailing  - the XX in the title refers to the female sex chromosome. But it's the impacts these toxins might have on women that will blow your mind. Could plastic pollution be gender discriminatory? Could women suffer greater effects from it than men? Remember, pollution can bio-accumulate - the fish eat the plastic, and we eat the fish. We know that, but there is much we remain in the dark about. Of the estimated 700 contaminants in our bodies, many have barely been researched. Emily Penn's appearance on this week's edition of The Sustainability Report Podcast couldn't be more timely. Next month, the ocean advocate and skipper will embark on her most ambitious project to date: sending 300 multidisciplinary women around the world to conduct scientific research on the growing ocean plastics crisis. The eXXpedition crew will experience 30 voyages (equating to 38,000 nautical miles) over a two-year period attempting to find a solution to the declining health of the Earth's waters, that are being impacted massively by the ubiquity of the material in our everyday lives. It's estimated that eight million tonnes of plastic is being dumped in the ocean every year, polluting the water and posing a significant threat to marine life.During this episode, Emily will discuss her decade-long campaign to raise awareness of the issue and her quest to encourage every one of us to reevaluate our relationship with plastic.Crucially, she will talk about how the sports industry – a major purchaser and provider of single-use plastic – can change its behaviour and offer more sustainable products related to athlete hydration and food and beverage packaging for fans.Emily has worked with World Sailing, The Ocean Race and Sky Ocean Rescue – which has collaborated with several Premier League football clubs to provide reusable cups for fans during games – to move the needle in sport. But her message is crystal clear: an awful lot more needs to be done by all stakeholders.“You have governing bodies in each of these different sports and if they can come along and change the rules a bit to incentivise people to do things sustainably, then that means you can be competitive and move the bar on sustainability at the same time,” she says.“It's really important to get buy-in from all parties – we need the governance there, but we also need industry coming to the table, and the competitors and individuals passionate about the issue as well.”

This is an episode close to my heart. Emily Penn is an ocean advocate, skipper and campaigner. She is on a mission to get us all to save our oceans and understand the impact of plastic pollution on particularly female health. So whilst we speak about success, there have been few routines in Emily’s life, but ambitious goals to make this world a better and cleaner place. Her journey is amazing and what I took away from this episode is even more awareness on how many plastic bags we use, how polluted the oceans are and that it isn’t too late for us to save our planet. Feel free to learn more about Emily’s adventures on her website or reach out to hear on Twitter @emilypenn.
