A discovery in the dark depths of the Pacific Ocean has been challenging the scientific consensus of how oxygen is produced and has even called into question how life on Earth began.Photosynthetic organisms like plants and algae use energy from sunlight to create the planet's oxygen. But new evidence published by Prof. Andrew Sweetman and collaborators, including his former PhD student Dr Danielle de Jonge, has shown how oxygen is also produced in complete darkness at the seafloor 4,000 metres below the ocean surface, where no light can penetrate. Now Prof. Sweetman is returning to the Pacific with custom-built equipment, thanks for funding from The Nippon Foundation, to find out how this phenomenon is occurring. In this episode Prof. Sweetman and Dr de Jonge share their experience of making the Dark Oxygen discovery and the 'rollercoaster' they've experienced as their research paper continues to make global headlines. The Ocean Explorer podcast is produced by the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), an ocean research charity and partner of UHI based in Oban.In each episode, we take a deep dive into marine science topics with SAMS scientists and special guests.Interested in working or studying with us, or helping with our work? The ocean covers  71 percent of Earth, but collectively little is known about it. In this Ocean podcast episode, Ernst van der Poll, talks with Host Kate Wing from Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica about successful ways to connect people with the ocean, offering experiences from the beach to the depths. Using STEM education and new technology, Connect Ocean is inspiring new explorers to gather data and expand their knowledge of marine ecosystems in their own backyards. Connect Ocean is setting the stage for  community scientists to make a difference and have an impact where they live. Ernst began his work in Dubai, where he founded Tawasul to encourage youth to put down their digital devices and get outside and connect with nature. He worked to get people underwater, from  first bubbles in a pool to the first dive into the ocean, in under an hour, followed by education and skill development. Now Ernst works to connect scientists and communities to gather critical data and take action.  In a project in the Tampa Bay, Florida area, local participants used a marine debris identification app to explore the intertidal zone and collect trash. .. They then shared that data with a coalition of NGOs, known as Suncoast Rise Above Plastics, that are working to stop single-use plastic.  Tune in to learn more about developing guidebooks for all inclusive participatory science as a force in overall conservation practices. Hear how participants are making an impact on climate and ocean by learning to map and better understand their local ecosystems via technology and exploration. BIO Ernst Van der Poll is an Ocean Explorer and PADI Course Director with more than 10,000 dives experience. He grew up on the shores of Africa's east coast and the Ocean is part of his professional life ever since. During his 14 years in the Middle East, Ernst founded Tawasul, the very first marine-themed, place based experiential learning program in the region. The program engaged more than 2000 kids from 2002 to 2011, many of whom are studying marine sciences now. He was also appointed personal diving instructor and safety officer for the Crown Prince of Dubai and worked with Palestinian refugees with physical disabilities. After moving to Costa Rica, he founded ConnectOcean and one of the first All ability diving programs in Central America, helping people with life changing injuries to enjoy the Ocean through scuba diving. Today, Ernst conducts Corporate Team Building and CSR programs, and keeps on teaching scuba diving as his schedule permits. He collaborates with many internationally renowned educators, researchers and innovators in order to inspire the next generation of environmentalists and leaders. On this episode, hosts Peter Ravella and Tyler Buckingham welcome Peter Neill to the show to talk about the new World Ocean Explorer DEEP SEA exhibit, a virtual aquarium launched in partnership between the World Ocean Observatory and the Schmidt Ocean Institute. THE DEEP SEA is an educational, interactive online platform for ocean exploration and discovery, utilizing high-resolution video, models, and descriptive materials of newly discovered deep-sea ocean species and environments observed during science expeditions. The DEEP SEA exhibit was designed to bring three-dimensional ocean literacy and marine science education to a worldwide audience of educators, students and individuals interested in the full spectrum of biodiversity and related value provided by the ocean–the largest, most essential natural system on earth. The virtual aquarium allows users to explore deep-sea ecosystems that cannot be observed in a traditional aquarium setting, such as hydrothermal vents, whale falls, and interactions with 3D models of newly discovered species. Peter Neill is founder and director of the World Ocean Observatory, a web-based place of exchange for information and educational services about the health of the ocean. Throughout his career, Mr. Neill has contributed to organizations devoted to marine affairs, education, and culture.

Episode 22, 13th August 2020 - In a longer than usual episode SUT CEO Steve Hall interviews Dr Jon Copley about his career in deep-ocean exploration and research. Jon was an SUT-sponsored student back in his university days, and has gone on to become one of the world's leading experts on the deep ocean environment, currently he's the Associate Professor in Ocean Exploration & Public Engagement in the School of Ocean & Earth science at the University of Southampton, and also works as a freelance science communicator, contributing to publications such as New Scientist magazine, and training scientists how to communicate effectively. Jon is one of the small number of human beings who've spent time exploring the abyss on board human-occupied vehicles such as the DSVs Sea Cliff, Shinkai 6500, Johnson Sea Link and others. Jon is also a user of deep-rated Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) - indeed he followed Steve Hall's stint as 'Autosub Science Missions' Programme manager at the UK National Oceanography Centre in the early 2000s, taking the work to the next level as the 'Autosub Under-Ice Science Missions' Programme Manager.Jon speaks about hydrothermal vent ecosystems, the technology needed to explore them, what it's like to dive into the depths of the ocean far beyond the limits of military submarines, and includes tips for young people interested in a career in ocean discovery. We also talk about using robots to explore the oceans of other worlds, and how today's work in Earth's ocean will make that possible in the not-too-distant future. He also speaks briefly on deep ocean mining to supply raw materials for a post-hydrocarbons world, and the need for effective planning and legislation to ensure it is conducted in the safest & most sustainable manner. Find out more about Jon at http://www.joncopley.com His book 'Ask an Ocean Explorer' is available from the usual sources, ISBN-13: 9781473696877.
