High-growth, high-performance companies need to do extraordinary things to remain competitive. I recently had the opportunity to see how leading professional services firm Genpact is leveraging their sponsorship of the Envision Formula E Racing team in ways beyond what they imagined when they teamed up in 2018.I was invited to Silverstone, the home of British Racing to view first-hand the Envision Racing cars, as well as speak to one of the team drivers, Robin Frijns  as well as Team principal, Sylvain Fillipi, and understand how Genpact's partnership is giving the team a competitive advantage.Owned by leading digital energy company Envision Group, Envision Racing is one of the founding and leading outfits in the FIA Formula E World ChampionshipAs we will hear in my 2-part podcast series, the championship is more than just a racing series, it's a battle for the future. Formula E cars, powered by pure electricity, are paving the way for the cars of tomorrow.Genpact is a principal partner of the team, and as we will hear from Genpact's Chief Digital Officer, Sanjay Srivastava, their partnership goes way beyond their logo on the cars.Genpact powers many of the solutions to analyse the reams of data from the car after each race and provide actionable insights to tune the car for peak performance under race conditions.Sanjay explains in the first podcast: “Not only have we helped deliver performance on the racetrack, not only have we helped with the race against climate change, we've actually taken these learnings and applied it to a real business.”My discussion with Sanjay was wide-ranging and covered many topics around data, analytics, and how the learnings from the racetrack are making it into their customer engagements in a meaningful way. This podcast is timely, ahead of the London 2022 E-Prix to be held this weekend at ExCeL London – home of the world's first indoor/outdoor circuit where I will be a guest of Genpact to record a second podcast with Shibu Nambiar, their Chief Operating Officer.Resources mentioned on the showLeonardo Da Vinci by Walter IsaacsonMore on Sanjay Sanjay on LinkedInSanjay on TwitterGenpact WebsiteMore on SylvainSylvian's BioEnvision Racing WebsiteLondon 2022 E-PrixDisclaimer: This podcast was a paid partnership with Genpact. Franz Jung, Vice President of China's Envision Group and Chairman of the Board of Envision Virgin Racing, the team that competes in the Formula E electric motor racing series, is our latest guest on the Business of Sport Podcast with the International Sports Convention. What is the future of motor sport in a climate emergency? With Envision Group, the world- leading greentech company as the team's majority owner, Jung, whose career before joining Envision was with luxury car brands like Mercedes, BMW and Porsche, is uniquely placed to answer that question. “We will see a steep increase of electro-mobility racing in future,” says Jung. “I can't imagine that there will be no more [fossil] fuel-powered racing, but electro-mobility races will grow a lot over the next 10 years.” Speaking to Callum Murray, he explains that Envision decided to invest in a Formula E team because it has “exactly the same vision” as the race series, which he summarises as: “Being clean', being hi-tech, being powered by battery, being powered by computing… Possibly Envision, within the entire Formula E teams, is the only company which is 100-per-cent sustainable – and this is one of the major reasons why we acquired two years ago the majority stake.” In its first season, 2018-19, the Envision team finished in third place in the team standings, out of 10 teams, Jung points out proudly, a highly commendable result for a non-OEM (original equipment manufacturer – or major car brand-backed team). Other teams on the grid count the likes of Nissan, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Audi as backers. However, rubbing shoulders with such brands also gives Envision the opportunity to introduce them to its own technology solutions, especially its Artificial Intelligence of Things-powered batteries (for those unfamiliar with AIoT, Jung provides a useful explanation). The technology also helped the team to win last year's race in Paris, according to Jung, enabling it to predict “almost by the minute, when it is raining and where on the circuit.” The 14-race 2019-2020 Formula E season was suspended in mid-March after five races, as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. With a possible resumption of racing behind closed doors scheduled for July, the Envision Virgin team, like others, is taking part in a virtual e-Sports Formula E racing series, the ‘Race at Home Challenge', in the meantime. Competing in Formula E is expensive, Jung admits, but media revenue growth of between 300 and 400 per cent from season to season justifies the cost, while budget caps imposed by the FIA, the sport's world governing body, and Formula E ensure that smaller, non-SEO teams like Envision Virgin Racing can remain competitive. Jung, who says he never reads management books, also discusses his own management style, after over 20 years of leadership roles in the automotive industry, saying it is built on trust: “I'm not a micro-manager at all. ‘You have your job to do. Please go and do it, and come back to me if you have a problem. And as long as I don't hear anything, everything goes well'.”

Show #467   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 10th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   ALREADY MORE THAN 10,000 REGISTRATIONS FOR THE ID.3 "At a press event held yesterday in Berlin, Volkswagen launched pre-booking in Europe for the first model in its new full-electric ID. model family, the ID.3. Customers’ interest in the special edition, the ID.3 1ST, which is limited to 30,000 vehicles, is significantly exceeding the brand’s expectations. Sometimes, the IT systems are unable to handle the large number of users accessing the system at the same time. This leads to long waiting times and interruptions in the registration process in some markets. Volkswagen is working hard to eliminate the hitches. Nevertheless, more than 10,000 registrations were received throughout Europe during the first 24 hours."   VW ZWICKAU PLANT ON SCHEDULE AS ID.3 ROLLS OUT "The transformation of the VW Zwickau site into a purely electric car plant is fully on schedule. According to VW, more than 200 ID.3 pre-series vehicles have already been successfully produced." reports electrive.com: "Volkswagen claims that this is the world’s first electric transformation of a large conventional car factory. In the future, the Zwickau plant will only make e-vehicles based on the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB) and have a production capacity of 330,000 vehicles a year."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/05/10/vw-zwickau-plant-on-schedule-as-id-3-rolls-out/   DYSON PATENTS AND MEMO OFFER A CRYPTIC TEASE OF ITS FIRST EV "Sir James Dyson has revealed some early details about the company's electric car in a memo sent to employees and seen by Bloomberg and The Telegraph. A set of patents that recently became public also includes diagrams that make it seem like the vehicle will look like a Range Rover. " according to Engadget today: "While we might have to wait a bit before seeing a prototype, the company has reportedly sunk billions into the project, which already has 500 personnel. It's designed in house, after all, and will be manufactured -- in a facility in Singapore -- and sold by Dyson itself. Details unfortunately remain scant despite the sketches, but the billionaire's memo said testing will ramp up in June and that the EV is on track for launch in 2021."   BP CHARGEMASTER PLANS 100 NEW 150 KW CHARGERS IN UK THIS YEAR "British charging company BP Chargemaster (BP acquired the Chargemaster in 2018) announced a plan to install 400 ultra-fast charging stations in the UK by 2021. The first batch of 100 150 kW chargers will be installed by the end of 2019, at 50 locations (most likely at BP fuel stations) starting from July." writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com. Whereas Autocar says: "The rollout will help future-proof the UK’s charging network, as currently very few EVs are capable of charging at 150kW. Audi’s e-tron is one that is, and its 95kWh battery can be charged to 80% in around 30 minutes. Companies such as Pod Point, Fastned and Ionity all claim to be rolling out chargers capable of supplying power at 150kW and above, but there’s currently only a handful that are operational in the UK. BP Chargemaster’s announcement is the biggest commitment so far as a result. "   https://insideevs.com/news/348682/bp-chargemaster-100-new-chargers-uk/   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/bp-chargemaster-install-100-ultra-fast-ev-chargers-year   SEAT ROLLS OUT ITS ELECTRIC OFFENSIVE IN BARCELONA SEAT celebrates its 69 years of history and is participating this year in the 100th edition of the Automobile Barcelona, where it has rolled out its vision of electric mobility with its two new concept cars – the first ever fully electric SEAT el-Born and the SEAT Minimo, a forward-looking approach that aims to become the companion of cities and revolutionis urban mobility. Moreover, CUPRA is also displaying the new CUPRA Formentor, the brand’s own first model, as well as the e-Racer, the first ever fully electric touring racecar. The el-Born concept car is the first SEAT that has been conceived as an electric vehicle and it is scheduled for market launch in 2020. SEAT will be the Volkswagen Group’s second brand to make a model on the MEB platform, whose assembly line is set to turn out a new generation of vehicles based on the market’s most advanced electric and connectivity technology. With a practical range of between 300 and 420 km thanks to its 58 kWh battery, this vehicle is ready to travel beyond urban limits.   BMW'S ELECTRIC SUV SPIED UP CLOSE WITH INTERIOR SHOWING "BMW's next electric vehicle, which will likely be named either the i5 or, appropriately enough, the iNEXT, was spied during testing. These photos don't reveal a lot about the exterior styling of the upcoming electrified crossover, but we do have our first look at the interior of the new BMW. At this point, we have absolutely no details about the powertrain in this new vehicle. All we have are these excellent close-up photos from our spy photographer." according to Cam for Motor1.com: "while we've gotten used to referring to this project as either the i5 or the iNEXT, the steering wheel appears to say "iNEXT" on it if you look closely. It's a small, blue, rhombus-shaped badge placed below the poorly-disguised BMW emblem."   https://www.motor1.com/news/349028/bmw-inext-interior-spy-shots/amp/   ENVISION AESC'S NCM 811 BATTERIES TO EXCEED 300 WH/KG IN 2020 "Envision AESC, formerly AESC (Automotive Energy Supply Corporation) acquired by Envision Group from Nissan (which still holds some 20% of shares), announced new 5th generation NCM 811 batteries." says InsideEVs: "Over nine years, AESC supplied more than 430,000 battery packs for electric cars (more than 90% to Nissan), having three manufacturing plants around the world with a total capacity of 7.5 GWh annually. In the longer term, the company hopes to decrease the battery cost to $50/kWh in 2025"   OPEL CORSA FULLY ELECTRIC VERSION READY TO ROLL "The new generation of the Opel Corsa will celebrate its world premiere on 4 June and can be ordered as a fully electric version from then on. In an interview, Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller promised an “attractive price” for the E-Corsa but did not specify any details." says Carrie at electrive: "At the end of last year, Opel announced its intention to open the order books for the new electric Corsa and the Grandland X as plug-in hybrids in the first half of 2019. The Corsa is likely to have the same technical data as the DS 3 Crossback. Lohscheller promised a competitive price for the market launch, which could be as early as December: “With the new Corsa, we are making e-mobility affordable for a wide range of customers. This will be a real “Volks” electric car.”   https://www.electrive.com/2019/05/10/opel-corsa-fully-electric-version-ready-to-roll/   FERRARI HYBRID SUPERCAR CONFIRMED EVO reports on Ferrari adding batteries to their next car: "Ferrari has confirmed it will reveal a new V6 hybrid supercar in a matter of just weeks, after CEO Louis Camilleri made mention of the new model’s imminent arrival during the firm’s Q1 investors’ financial call. The new supercar will be the first series-production hybrid from Ferrari, after the strictly limited LaFerrari, and will combine its new electrified components with a new V6 power unit."   https://www.evo.co.uk/ferrari/22636/ferrari-hybrid-supercar-confirmed-mclaren-has-been-put-on-notice   TESPLAYER BRINGS SPOTIFY ACCESS TO TESLA MODEL S, 3, X OWNERS "Tesla owners finally have a way to play Spotify in their Model S, Model X and Model 3 thanks to third-party, browser-based app ‘TesPlayer‘ that can manage playlists and play music directly from the vehicle’s center touchscreen." according to Simon at Teslarati "Tesla uses Spotify as its provider of choice in Europe, though vehicles in the United States are equipped with Slacker Radio instead. While Slacker is impressive on its own right, it falls short when compared to Spotify and its insanely vast plethora of content."   https://www.teslarati.com/how-to-play-spotify-tesla-music-streaming/   TESLA MODEL 3 TRACKER: CUMULATIVE PRODUCTION EXCEEDS 250,000 InsideEVs has been looking at the Bloomberg Tracker and Model 3 just hit a big number: "Today, Bloomberg’s Tesla Model 3 Tracker shows for the very first time that a quarter million Tesla Model 3 have been produced cumulatively. The counter stands at 250,276 Model 3 produced, out of which about 218,612 was confirmed by Tesla at the end of March 2019. The Tracker assumes that another 31,664 were produced in almost 40 days (more than 800 per day)."   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #429.   Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 29th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Hello to two new patrons of the show. Welcome to CLIFF BATES and PRODUCER GEOFF GATES   KIA SOUL EV 2020 REVIEWS CNET says: ”As for the all-important driving range, the Soul EV is extremely competitive. The EPA officially rates the Soul EV at 243 miles of range, which bests the Chevrolet Bolt (238 miles), Kia Niro EV (239 miles) and Nissan Leaf Plus (226 miles). Only the Hyundai Kona Electric can go farther than the Soul, with its EPA-rated 258-mile range. Paddles on the steering wheel activate different levels of brake regeneration, with the maximum Level 3 offering for the sort of one-pedal EV driving characteristics that many people (myself included) love. That said, the Soul won't regeneratively brake to a complete stop like some other EVs, though if you press the Auto Hold button on the center console, you can let go of the brake when you're stationary."   Autocar were impressed by the tech: "Adaptive cruise control and lane following afford a useful amount of autonomy in heavy traffic, there’s an extensive suite of electronic safety systems, a head-up display and various features designed to maximise the battery pack. These include cooling and heating the 64kWh battery with liquid rather than air, while a button enables you to control heat or chill only the driver’s portion of the cabin if you’re one-up and need to eke. An in-built heat pump recovers waste heat from the coolant, while driving modes that include Eco and Eco Plus help. If you want one, your chief issue will be the wait – orders for the e-Niro stretch to 2020, and the Soul EV does not go on sale until late this year. But by that time, Kia’s plans to increase production of its EV powertrain may well have been realised."   Steve Fowler at AutoExpress: "We’re big fans of the Soul EV’s bigger brother, the eNiro, so it stands to reason that we’d love the similarly–powered new Soul, too. However, the Soul seems have a more youthful spirit and more character, in keeping with the car’s slightly smaller size and funkier design. And Kia hopes it will be cheaper than the eNiro. A lot can happen between now and when the first cars arrive at the end of the year, but Kia would like it if the first cars could come in at just under £30,000 including the current government EV incentive."   LIGHTNING INTRODUCES THE ALL-NEW $13K STRIKE "After two months of teasing, Lightning Motorcycles has finally lifted the veil off the all-new Strike, its long-range, low-price model." Says Sabrina at RideApart.com: "Lightning announced that the model will be available with three battery options. The entry-level “Strike Standard” receives a 10kWh battery with an estimated range of 70 miles on the highway and 100 miles in the city—this is the model the manufacturer has been announcing at the highly appealing price point of $12,998. The “Strike Mid-Range” is powered by a 15 kWh battery able to power the vehicle on 105 highway miles and 150 city miles. This version of the Strike has been priced at $16,998. Last but not least is the long-range “Strike Carbon Edition” which 20 kWh battery allows the bike to travel up to the much-advertised 200 miles in the city—this version is offered at $19,998. It isn’t the under-$13k price Lightning has been teasing for two months, but it is still a lot more affordable than a number of electric motorcycles currently on the market.Lightning is expected to start rolling the first Strikes out of production in July 2019 in the United States, starting with the top of the line Strike Carbon Edition. The company will announce its plan for international expansion later this year."   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/315837/lightning-strike-electric-motorcycle-launch/   10,000 ELECTRIC CARS REGISTERED IN NORWAY THIS MONTH: HALF ARE TESLA "According to the latest registration data (as of the end of March 28, 2019), new all-electric car registrations in Norway already reached 10,000 for the month (probably including a three-digit number of imported used BEVs). The official results will be announced inthe first days of April, but it’s already certain that we are watching a groundbreaking record of records." Reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The biggest splash in March was done by Tesla, which reportedly noted 5,000 registrations, including over 4,500 Tesla Model 3. It was just 4,000 recently! With many new compelling plug-in models on the horizon, Norway could be just a year or two from almost entirely switching to electric cars."   https://insideevs.com/10000-bev-registered-norway-half-tesla/   PROGRESSIVE BRAKES ADDED TO MODEL 3 New release notes for Model 3 in Europe: "If you are driving over 50 km/h and brake forcefully, the brake lights will now flash quickly to warn other drivers that your car is rapidly slowing down,” reads the description for Tesla’s Dynamic Brake Lights feature. In addition to flashing the tail lights in situations that call for unexpected heavy braking, the vehicle will also flash its hazard lights. If your car stops completely, the hazard warning lights will flash until you press the accelerator or manually press the hazard warning lights button to turn them off."   PORSCHE TAYCAN ENTERS FINAL TESTING PHASE AHEAD OF SEPTEMBER REVEAL Simon at Teslarati has the lowdown on the final testing stages of the Porsche Taycan: "Porsche engineers are currently taking advantage of the summer in the Southern Hemisphere to test the Taycan’s driving dynamics in warm temperatures. At the same time, teams from the company are also testing the vehicle in Scandinavia, just a few miles away from the Arctic Circle, to evaluate the electric car’s performance in frigid temperatures. Porsche notes that the Taycan’s testing spans 30 countries, in temperatures that range from -35 to 50 degree Celcius (-31F to 122F). Porsche initially plans to start the Taycan’s production at 20,000 units per year, though positive reception from reservation holders have encouraged the company to raise its estimates for the all-electric car’s manufacturing. The Taycan will be capable of sprinting from 0-60 mph in under 3.5 seconds and have a range of over 300 miles on one charge. The all-electric car is designed to support 350 kW charging, making it possible to replenish over 60 miles of range in just 4 minutes."   The most significant facts from the Taycan testing phase:   Overall distance covered: Approximately six million kilometres, of which two million were endurance run kilometres Countries: A total of 30, including the USA, China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Finland Temperatures: From minus 35 to plus 50 degree Celsius Air humidity: From 20 to 100 per cent Altitude: From 85 metres below to 3,000 metres above sea level Charging cycles: Over 100,000 using various charging technologies across the globe Development team: Around 1,000 test drivers, technicians and engineers   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-q1-2019-model-3-estimates-excessive-negativity/   EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH FORD’S CHIEF OF ELECTRIFICATION Bradley at InsideEvs.com has been talking to Ford's Ted Cannis. "Cannis confirmed that Ford’s crossover EV will have at least 300 miles of range in E.P.A. testing, but he declined to commit to target numbers for horsepower or acceleration. Cannis said that “most interest from consumers [for EVs] is in performance vehicles.” When asked how Ford is striking the balance between power and driving range, he conveniently replied, “We will not sacrifice either. The company will continue to include hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure EV in its electrification portfolio. For regions and specific customers not wanting to go “cold turkey” (as he put it) on combustion, hybrids with and without a plug will serve their needs. Talks with Volkswagen about sharing EV platforms and tech are focused on filling in gaps in overseas markets. “We’re looking at efficiencies around the world so we can get more scale,” he said. Cannis mentioned the impact of local incentives on EV adoption.”   https://insideevs.com/interview-ford-chief-electrification/   NISSAN COMPLETES SALE OF BATTERY BUSINESS TO ENVISION GROUP Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has completed the previously announced sale of its electric battery operations and production facilities to Envision Group, a world-leading digital energy company.
