Distractions are the silent productivity killers that lurk around every corner of our professional lives. The fundamental truth is that distractions don't just happen; we allow them to happen. It's not social media, email notifications, or the latest trending videos that are inherently distracting—it's our response to them that matters. If you decide to scroll through Instagram or catch up on TikTok videos during your designated break time, it's not a distraction. It's a choice you consciously made. However, when these activities pull you away from essential tasks that drive value to your business, that's when they morph into genuine distractions. In this episode, we'll delve deeper into the psychology of distraction, exploring why our brains tend to gravitate towards diversions and what we can do to regain control. We'll also share practical strategies and techniques to help you combat distractions effectively. So whether you're an entrepreneur juggling a dozen tasks or a seasoned business owner looking to optimise your workflow, tune in to this episode and get ready to reclaim your focus, boost your productivity, and ultimately stop getting distracted in business. In today's fast-paced and competitive business world, it's more important than ever for leaders to take ownership of their success. But what does that really mean? On this episode of the ABQ Business Podcast with host Jason Rigby, we explore the concept of extreme ownership and how it can transform the way we lead our teams and drive success in our businesses. What is Extreme Ownership? At its core, extreme ownership is about taking complete responsibility for our actions and outcomes. It means owning our mistakes, learning from them, and taking the necessary steps to improve and move forward. Extreme ownership requires a mindset shift, from blaming external factors for our failures to taking personal accountability for our results. How Does Extreme Ownership Benefit Leaders? Extreme ownership has the power to transform the way we lead our teams and drive success in our businesses. When leaders take ownership of their actions and outcomes, they inspire their teams to do the same. This creates a culture of accountability and responsibility, where team members are empowered to take ownership of their work and deliver outstanding results. Leaders who embrace extreme ownership also demonstrate a level of vulnerability and transparency that builds trust with their teams. By owning their mistakes and learning from them, they show that they are human and approachable, which makes it easier for team members to approach them with their own challenges and opportunities. How Can Leaders Practice Extreme Ownership? To practice extreme ownership, leaders must first recognize the areas where they can take ownership and make improvements. This may involve identifying areas of weakness in their leadership style or gaps in their team's performance. Leaders must then take action to address these areas, whether it's through personal development, coaching, or implementing new strategies. Another key component of extreme ownership is communication. Leaders must be clear and transparent with their teams about their expectations and the results they are striving for. They must also communicate openly and honestly about their own challenges and successes, and provide feedback and guidance to their teams along the way. In conclusion, extreme ownership is a powerful mindset shift that can transform the way we lead our teams and drive success in our businesses. By taking complete responsibility for our actions and outcomes, we can create a culture of accountability and responsibility that empowers our teams to deliver outstanding results. Life happens, and people are facing adversity all day every day. It just so happens that the host of Breakaway Wealth faced adversity recently in an event that everybody knows about. A little over a week ago, Hurricane Ian made landfall just a couple of miles from Jim's house and nobody heard from him for 48 hours or so. They were fighting through over 150mph winds and storm surges, and Jim was left with no power or water. Experiencing the hurricane first-hand, there are a few things he would have done differently had he known what he does now, and he's sharing his experience and takeaways from this event this week. In the face of adversity, there aren't any easy decisions or solutions. The first plausible step is to simply take action. It is OK to grieve. It is OK to be sad about what you have experienced. But regardless of the experience, what really matters is your attitude. It is always liberating to take ownership of your situation, and whatever that adversity is, it is possible to not let it win, to not let it beat you. Persistency is key, and you need to be bigger, step up – not down – and come out of the adversity on the other side. And that's what Jim and Nick are diving deeper into in this episode. In this episode, Jim and Nick talk about adversity, crisis, and what to do when you are faced with either of these in your own life. In Jim's case, a hurricane hit and damaged people's homes, and people lost their lives. He shares how he handled it, his advice for what to do in a crisis, and some lessons on the different stages of a crisis and how to put them to work in your own life. Find out the importance of vision and the role it plays in handling adversity, and some strategies for handling adversity from Fortune 500 executive Deborah Smith Pegues. All thoughts and prayers here at Breakaway Wealth go out to everyone who has been affected by Hurricane Ian. - Connect with Jim Oliver: Facebook: CreateTailwind & Jim Oliver Website: https://createtailwind.com/ YouTube: CreateTailwind LinkedIn: Jim Oliver Join the Community: https://community.createtailwind.com/ RSVP for the next community Q&A HERE: https://community.createtailwind.com/events Resources Mentioned: Deborah Smith Pegues: Home - Deborah Smith Pegues (confrontingissues.com) Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy Seals Lead and Win by Jocko Willink: https://www.amazon.com/Extreme-Ownership-Jocko-Willink/dp/1250183863

In this episode, Reagan and Austin discuss the books we have read in 2021. We narrow it down to our favorite books (a hard task) and then discuss why we liked them and some of what we have learned. If you follow this podcast, you know that we try our best to expand our minds and maintain peak performance in our lives. The majority of how we do this is by filtering what we take into our minds, aka, reading well. In this episode, we give a picture of the information we allow in our minds. If you'd like to know more of what we read check out our Good Reads down below. In the end, we spent a good amount of time talking about some really dark books looking at humanity in the past. While many of us try to read books we think we will enjoy, it is also important to read books that are hard. Books that are heavy and that expand our worldview. For example, it is essential to know how we got here; reading history is one of the best ways of doing this. Reading about history is very interesting, yet it can be hard to get through sometimes. Some really messed up people had their way and it's not all roses and ice cream cones. History affected real people just like you and me. It can be easy when reading books like that to try to extract information or learn lessons; don't do either. Simply look at it for what it was. Austin's Favorite Books 1. Goals - Brian Tracy 2. Was bedeutet Extreme Ownership eigentlich? Wieso kann man auch als Normalbürger etwas aus den Führungsprinzipien der SEALs lernen? Wie erfolgt der Transfer dieser Prinzipien in den (Berufs-)Alltag? Das und mehr besprechen wir in der heutigen Folge. In diesem Sinne: GO GET SOME. Fan vom Literatursenf? Folge uns auf https://www.instagram.com/literatursenf/ (Instagram)! About the Author Sent to the most violent battlefield in Iraq, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin’s SEAL task unit faced a seemingly impossible mission: help U.S. forces secure Ramadi, a city deemed “all but lost.” In gripping firsthand accounts of heroism, tragic loss, and hard-won victories in SEAL Team Three’s Task Unit Bruiser, they learned that leadership―at every level―is the most important factor in whether a team succeeds or fails. Willink and Babin returned home from deployment and instituted SEAL leadership training that helped forge the next generation of SEAL leaders. After departing the SEAL Teams, they launched Echelon Front, a company that teaches these same leadership principles to businesses and organizations. From promising startups to Fortune 500 companies, Babin and Willink have helped scores of clients across a broad range of industries build their own high-performance teams and dominate their battlefields. The fact that everything is your responsibility (and your fault) in some way – and the more you look at everything as your responsibility, the more effective you’ll be. Waving goodbye to blame and circumstance and all the things that get in the way of us taking control of situations. This idea on its own is incredibly powerful and would make a huge difference in many organisations (and lives). BIG IDEA 1 (5:42) – Belief is key To convince and inspire others to follow you, you must truly believe in the mission. This is challenging in a lot of organisations because sometimes when you ask other people (or you yourself are asked) to do something, you’re not sure if it is the right direction or action. But to inspire others you have to truly believe in that mission. To better understand the mission (and therefore believe in it), you have to challenge it, question it, and therefore understand it. It comes back to a purpose or ‘why’ you’re trying to achieve what you’re trying to achieve. Of course, it is not just you who should believe in what needs to happen or what the overall vision is but as part of communicating that with others you need to give them the chance to question, challenge, and help them understand it. BIG IDEA 2 (8:38) – Decentralise This whole book could be called ‘extreme delegation’. A huge amount of ideas in the book come down to decentralisation and delegation. Jocko and Leif argue that humans can only manage 6 to 10 people – especially when things are going wrong. Organisations, therefore, have to push down as much authority as possible to make sure decisions can be made and action taken. To do this, however, you have to put the ego away – you won’t be able to delegate with an ego and whilst trying to control everything yourself. It comes back to big idea #1 – if everyone truly understands and believes the mission (and you have the right people), they should be able to make decisions accordingly. As a leader, if you are taking on all the work, ownership, and responsibility, you’re losing situational awareness to see what’s going on and be able to plan strategically. BIG IDEA 3 (11:52) – Plan Nothing can be achieved without a plan. Some of the items in their leader’s checklists for planning are analysing the mission, understanding the overall purpose, identifying the people you need, resources and time, determining the course of action, contingency planning, mitigating any risks and communicating the plan to relevant parties. The idea of decentralisation is actually built into the planning process to embed this discipline and thinking into all missions and activities. Finally, part of the planning is doing a post-operational debrief after the activity has happened – something that’s not done often enough in organisations. The planning process put forward by Jocko and Leif is quite intense but this is the crux of their mindset of ‘discipline equals freedom’. By having the discipline of plans, processes, and systems, you then have the freedom to focus on the things that matter, to flex and adapt when needed. Hello and welcome back to the Band Director's lounge! This week instead of an interview, I will be doing a book review. I have been gearing up for this episode for quite some time as the book I am going to discuss is near and dear to me. I am often sharing the book with students as it one of the best books on leadership that I have read in my entire life. The book is called “Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy Seals Lead and Win” but Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. Upon first read of the title you might anticipate a machismo-drill sergeant style approach towards leadership to be laid out within its pages, however it is the exact opposite. U.S. Navy SEALs are probably one of the highest-performing military teams in the world. In “Extreme Ownership”, retired SEAL officers Willink and Babin share the vital leadership principles that have enabled SEAL leaders and teams to achieve extraordinary results, and explain how these insights can be applied to achieve success in all aspects of business and life. Episode Overview Introduction & Update Victory Within Extreme Ownership (06:58) No Bad Teams, Only Bad Leaders (30:00) Believe (35:47) Check The Ego. (40:38) Wrap-up (54:40) I'll post some resources and links to summaries of this book. However if you are interested in picking it up, please consider using the link in the show notes to purchase it through amazon. A small percentage of the proceeds will trickle back to us and help offset some of our operating costs. Thanks again for turning in! We'll see you back here next time in The Band Director's Lounge.
