Today I interview Matt Travis who had a lot of learning disabilities when he was a kid and it always created a sense of not feeling that he was enough. This made him struggle to speak in front of classes and groups. When he was in college studying to become a teacher, Matt had to learn to become comfortable with being uncomfortable in order to follow his passion. Being able to speak in front of large groups was a big part of that. Now he could happily speak all day! __________________ Matt Travis is a Rapid Transformation Hypnotherapist, he has a Masters of Health, a Certified Functional Strength Coach, Precision Nutrition Pro Coach, Certified Wildfit Coach, FMS Certified, and a non-stop life-long learner. Material stuff can only provide you to some extent. When life gets tough and nasty, the one thing that will help you sail through is your support system with whom you build a great relationship. How do you live in the hearts of many and leave a lasting impact in everyone's world? Brendon Rearick is a husband, father, strength coach, public speaker, teacher, business owner. He's an ice cream lover, bookworm. He's a co-owner and educator at Certified Functional Strength Coach at Train Smarter and Harder at strengthcoach.com and @mbsc.tv. He's also a co-owner and therapist at Movement as Medicine and the director of fitness at Crossover Health San Jose. He is the former performance director at Mike Boyle Strength Conditioning. Beyond the labels, his perfect purpose for living is to make exercise the number one prescribed drug in the world, to spread the positive byproducts of movement and coaching as far as he can. And to collect moments, not things that have become his personal mantra. Any decision he faces is put up against those values. And if it doesn't align, he does not do it. Because in his words, life is not about what we have, but who we share it with. In this episode, Brendon shares how creating real and deep relationships opens you to doors of many opportunities, as it did to him. He also underscores having enriching conversations with as many so you can help more in the process of doing that. And when you help more, that's when you become more successful in the end. These thoughts about relationships tie to what his book is all about, Coaching Rules: A How-to Manual for a Successful Career in Strength and Fitness. He also shares other book resources he finds interesting to base reflections on as you aim to make your life better for yourself, your family, and the tribe you serve. He has a thing or two and more to say when it comes to getting successful at coaching. That you just have to deliver, and when everyone talks about it, that takes care of everything. Illness has a way of giving perspectives we never thought about beforehand. Find out how this setback completely changed his views on many things in life to the point of making it his mission statement to make exercise the number one prescribed drug in the world. The experience of being a father teaches you lessons that go beyond oneself. Let's find out what he says of the lessons he got from his daughter, what experiences and memories we need to create with our loved ones; what we need to declutter ourselves and fill it immensely with instead. With the pandemic changing the fitness world profoundly, he shares what lies ahead for the in-person and online fitness setup zeroing in on people's need for connection which all boils down to relationship building. "The way that you continue living is through memories and moments that you created with people. You don't die with your stuff." - Brendon Rearick What you will learn from this episode: 00:58 - Making it to the forefront his personal life motto 02:51 - How he thinks of relationships 05:55 - His formula for success 08:38 - How they got through all the trials and coming out successful 12:17 - You deliver, and they'll talk about it 13:53 - Ready, fire, aim 16:28 - Talking about his book entitled 'Coaching Rules: A How-to Manual for a Successful Career in Strength and Fitness' 21:45 - Why you can never step into the same book twice 25:23 - What it means for him to read these four books every year 26:28 - Becoming a completely different person when rereading books 29:30 - What his illness taught him 37:22 - Why he is a big believer in having less stuff 42:31 - Why should exercise be the number one prescribed drug in the world for him? 48:51 - The biggest lesson from his daughter: 'It's not about you anymore. It's not about me anymore.' 53:51 - Why it always pays to play the long game 55:58 - Where he thinks the coaching world is going on the horizon 59:51 - Sharing his thoughts of disincentivizing going online and incentivizing coming to live events 01:03:24 - How the connection piece plays its role in the in-person setup not going away Resource: Coaching Rules: A How-to Manual for a Successful Career in Strength and Fitness by Brendon Rearick Connect with Brendon Rearick: Brendonrearick.com Connect with Gavin McHale maverickcoachingacademy.ca LinkedIn Instagram

Today we welcome coach Kevin Carr to the show to talk about the importance of coach/client relationships, movement quality, principles of programming, progressions and regressions, his work with hockey players and endurance athletes, and cognitive health. Kevin has worked at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning for 12 years as a strength coach, personal trainer, and as a manager. Additionally he is a manual therapist and runs a rehab clinic called Movement As Medicine along with four other coaches where they look to help MBSC clients bridge the gap back to training from rehabilitation. Finally, Kevin is also the founder and manager at Certified Functional Strength Coach alongside Mike Boyle and Brendan Rearick. We first get into Kevin’s background and how he got started at MBSC. At age 18, he was a self proclaimed 18 year old meathead working at a Gold’s Gym. At the time he was a CPT and was going to be going to school for Kinesiology, and it was through a member of the gym who had told him about an internship opportunity at Mike Boyle’s facility. Kevin applied, was accepted, and has been there ever since. Around 2014, Kevin and fellow MBSC coach Brendan Rearick had both gone through massage school and opened up their clinic Movement As Medicine within the walls of MBSC. Next, we talk about Kevin’s evolution as a coach from the time he first walked through the doors of MBSC to where he is at now. The first thing he learned was how to train people like athletes and put the emphasis on moving well as opposed to just crushing them with excess load or volume. Furthermore, he learned the importance of communication and how to build relationships with his clients, which flew in the face of what he thought coaching was about at the time. Kevin talks about the value of being personable with every member within the facility, regardless if they’re your client or not. While he is naturally more introverted, coaching has allowed him to develop his extroverted skills and he expects all of his coaches to follow suit and fit within the outgoing culture of the facility. We then transition into some training talk starting with principles of program design. The first thing they address at MBSC is that they don’t want people to be in pain, so they teach progressions and regressions so that clients can work around injuries. The first step of designing any program is the prep work intended to improve movement quality and having alternatives on hand for clients who need to make modifications. The next thing he looks at is basic locomotion (skipping, hopping, bounding) and power development while scaling to the individual. With the actual strength component of a program, he wants to address the fundamental movement patterns, both bilaterally and unilaterally while ensuring that clients are using the appropriate exercise, load, and volume. While the framework of the basic template doesn’t change much from person to person, Kevin still uses an individualized approach by regressing and progressing movements according to what the client is capable of doing. This starts by having an understanding of what is limiting the client along with basic principles of anatomy and biomechanics. Coaches need a keen eye for movement, which takes time in the trenches to develop. This leads into a discussion on exercise selection and not creating more complexity just for the sake of it. As a coach you need to remember that just because you might be bored of an exercise, doesn’t mean that your client is. The basics go a long way and most people will never reach the point of mastery. We switch gears and take a peek at the type of clients that Kevin works with most. While a broad array of people walk through the doors at MBSC, they have created a niche with hockey players and surprisingly to him, runners and endurance athletes. When talking about his work with endurance athletes, oftentimes they will come to him in...

If have not already done so, please head to the link below and make sure to download our podcast reflection sheets. They're absolutely free! https://artofcoaching.com/podcastreflections/ Imagine this; you wake up alone in a hospital. Every time you touch your skin, no matter how gently, you bruise. To the point, if you roll over wrong or you scratch an itch, or you rub your eye, you may wake up the next day with hundreds of bruises. Not only that, but you're also told by doctors and surgeons that you have a disease, an affliction that only one in a million people will ever get. How would you act? What goes through your mind? If you've ever spent time in a hospital, you know what that environment feels like. You know the smell. You know the sounds, and the footprints. You see the urgency of doctors and nurses, the beeps, the clangs, and the bangs. There's a deafening silence while you sit in your own head thinking, "where am I, and what's going to happen?". Everyone, our guest today has an extraordinary story, and everything I've just described is a part of it. Brendon Rearick came back and is in remission from a very rare condition called Aplastic anemia. I'm going to let him tell this story, but I encourage you to listen up. As with every episode, please understand that nothing in these podcast episodes is just for strength coaches. Nothing is for people in any vacuum type situation. The lessons we experience in our lives are the very things that shape our outcome and our profession and our personal lives. So take heed, listen, and write notes. There's a lot of great stuff coming your way on today's episode. Brendon's personal mission is to spread the positive by-products of coaching and movement as far as he can using strength and conditioning as his platform. With a degree in Kinesiology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Brendon got his start at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning (MBSC) in Woburn, MA. The growth-focused environment at MBSC motivated Brendon in a way he had never experienced. Over a few short years he progressed to become the Program Director and earned his massage therapy license. Soon thereafter, he started an education company with four co-workers – Certified Functional Strength Coach. In five years, CFSC has certified over 6,500 trainers in over 50 countries. Now a California resident, Brendon travels and coaches often for Certified Functional Strength Coach, and has recently become an active speaker at the Perform Better summit conferences. His next venture will be opening a gym Train Smarter and Harder with his wife Jenny in the beginning of 2020. With an inexhaustible drive to learn more, practice his craft, and be the best version of himself, Brendon dedicates his free time to continuing education, dancing with his 3-year old daughter, reading, writing, and enjoying the outdoors. On today's episode of the fat m.e.l.t.ing radio podcast, Joe interviews Licensed Massage Therapist, Certified Functional Strength Coach, Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist. Kevin and Joe discuss how to become more preventive against injury instead of being reactive, the importance of really good basics, root cause of neck issues & Plantar fasciitis, how to stay fit as you travel and much more! Show notes Rather than place band aids on stuff, audit whats going on and ask “why?” Think preventive NOT reactive The quality of exercise determines the outcome Neck issues are often result of us living in an extension based world o Made worse by stress and respiration issues (vertical breathing patterns). o Reset respiration problems by checking in throughout the day to see where breathing is coming from and focus on using nose not mouth. o Think “360 degree” breathing or “everywhere breath” around your low belly, sides and low back. Shin splints/ Plantarfasciitis are often caused by overuse injuries (50% load, 50% muscles) and poor mileage management. o People often make the mistake of “running to get fit” when it should be “getting fit to run.” Training shoe spectrum: o First and foremost ask –“how do you feel” in the shoes? o Practice home foot care; roll bottom of your feet, wiggle your toes, make an arch and work on ankle mobility. Travel Fitness & Nutrition: Find things you can do when you’re traveling. o “You can’t make perfection out of an imperfect schedule.” o Focus on keeping a healthy routine, even as small or different as it might have to be. o Think 1 x 365% o Its not about the one off, its about the cumulative result. o Identify healthy snacks you love and bring them with you.

This is one of my favourite episodes EVER! I am so honoured to have my friend, colleague and mentor Mike Boyle on the show. Mike was so influential in my development as a strength coach. So many gems, so many golden nugget take aways and so many laughs between to coaches who never take themselves too serious. That may just be the secret to life! "Why do I feel bad about taking money? Pink talks about Re-framing. I had to re-frame my role as a trainer to 'I am helping that person feel better and I am giving them health care instead of them going to get sick care.' It makes me feel better about what I am doing and why I am charging for that service." Brendon Rearick, owner of Movement As Medicine and Certified Functional Strength Coach, is on to talk about To Sell Is Human. From the publisher: From the bestselling author of Drive and A Whole New Mind comes a surprising--and surprisingly useful--new book that explores the power of selling in our lives. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, one in nine Americans works in sales. Every day more than fifteen million people earn their keep by persuading someone else to make a purchase. But dig deeper and a startling truth emerges: Yes, one in nine Americans works in sales. But so do the other eight. Whether we’re employees pitching colleagues on a new idea, entrepreneurs enticing funders to invest, or parents and teachers cajoling children to study, we spend our days trying to move others. Like it or not, we’re all in sales now. To Sell Is Human offers a fresh look at the art and science of selling. As he did in Drive and A Whole New Mind, Daniel H. Pink draws on a rich trove of social science for his counter-intuitive insights. He reveals the new ABCs of moving others (it's no longer "Always Be Closing"), explains why extraverts don't make the best salespeople, and shows how giving people an "off-ramp" for their actions can matter more than actually changing their minds. Along the way, Pink describes the six successors to the elevator pitch, the three rules for understanding another's perspective, the five frames that can make your message clearer and more persuasive, and much more. The result is a perceptive and practical book--one that will change how you see the world and transform what you do at work, at school, and at home.
Kevin Carr, owner of Movement as Medicine and Certified Functional Strength Coach, is on to talk about Extreme Ownership. From the publisher: Sent to the most violent battlefield in Iraq, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin’s SEAL task unit faced a seemingly impossible mission: help U.S. forces secure Ramadi, a city deemed “all but lost.” In gripping firsthand accounts of heroism, tragic loss, and hard-won victories in SEAL Team Three’s Task Unit Bruiser, they learned that leadership―at every level―is the most important factor in whether a team succeeds or fails. Willink and Babin returned home from deployment and instituted SEAL leadership training that helped forge the next generation of SEAL leaders. After departing the SEAL Teams, they launched Echelon Front, a company that teaches these same leadership principles to businesses and organizations. From promising startups to Fortune 500 companies, Babin and Willink have helped scores of clients across a broad range of industries build their own high-performance teams and dominate their battlefields. Now, detailing the mind-set and principles that enable SEAL units to accomplish the most difficult missions in combat, Extreme Ownership shows how to apply them to any team, family or organization. Each chapter focuses on a specific topic such as Cover and Move, Decentralized Command, and Leading Up the Chain, explaining what they are, why they are important, and how to implement them in any leadership environment. A compelling narrative with powerful instruction and direct application, Extreme Ownership revolutionizes business management and challenges leaders everywhere to fulfill their ultimate purpose: lead and win. Every episode, we provide a free Readitfor.me summary of the current book we are discussing. Get the Extreme Ownership summary here
Do you remember what it was like to be a child at the playground? When you first arrive and see the equipment, the sand, the grass? I remember that feeling well – the desire to jump, crawl, run, do summer saults and cartwheels. But somewhere along the line, that feeling began to fade. For many of us, our enthusiasm for physical play went out with our teddy bears and blankies. I think many adults have these memories and, dare I say, even the desire to be able to play that way again, but our bodies are very different than they were when we were children. If we tried to crawl, jump, do somersaults and cartwheels, we’re afraid we’d end up in the ER. But JJ and Brian would like to challenge us all to give our bodies another chance to embrace physical play again. In this second episode of the “Can Fitness Really Be Fun?” series, I’ve invited personal trainer JJ Kovacevich to join me and Brian Bristol to explore how adults can re-learn the basic movements children take for granted. We also discuss the role of shame and how it can keep us from even trying in the first place. JJ Kovacevich is a movement junkie with a fierce commitment to body positivity, and she wants to help you find ways to celebrate what your moving body is capable of! She has a diverse movement background as a professional dancer, vinyasa yoga instructor, and circus artist and is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and a Certified Functional Strength Coach (with additional certifications in modalities such as TRX and kettlebells). Sessions with JJ are tailored to fit each unique person’s needs and abilities, and her passions include working with folks new to movement practices and those working with challenging relationships to body image, food, and exercise. We have a super knowledgeable personal trainer with us today. His name is Ross Oberlin. We will be talking about building youth athletes for the future. Ross Oberlin owns and operates RC Training and Fitness in Oak Park, IL. He is a Functional Movement Specialist, Certified Functional Strength Coach, and Strong First Kettlebell Instructor. Ross found his calling early, and at 31, he already has a decade of experience under his belt helping people reach their full potential. Before becoming a strength coach, Ross ran a Special Olympics program for several years. It was here that he learned how to be an adaptable coach and how to best communicate with his athletes. Backed with years of experience that started with training himself for wrestling and later mixed martial arts (mma), Ross found the perfect intersection his talents and passions in Strength & Conditioning. RC Training & Fitness works with both athletes and adult clients. During the summer months, their athletes program takes center stage. In just a few short months, the gym must help a variety of athletes from different sports with different abilities. It’s only with a structured plan and vision, that this goal is achieved. There’s a lot of misinformation out there on youth training. Flashy programs designed to simulate what the pros do are tempting, but can have serious consequences. Ross is here to break down what an athlete or parent should be looking for in a Strength & Conditioning coach/facility.
