Today we're diving into a topic that's not just timely but that can transform education for all students: creating neurodiversity-affirming schools. Joining me to share their vision for what's possible in education are two extraordinary advocates and experts, Amanda Morin and Emily Kircher-Morris who have collaborated on a wonderful new book on the topic, just out today in fact, Neurodiversity Affirming Schools: Transforming Practices So All Students Feel Accepted & Supported. In today's episode, we explored why embracing neurodiversity in schools benefits every student, not just those with IEPs. Amanda and Emily unpacked the barriers to change in education, including stigma and fear, and introduce how strategies like Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can be used to create inclusive classrooms. We also discussed the Neurodiversity Affirming Teacher's Compact, a framework for educators to embrace diverse learning needs, and finally, the importance of fostering self-advocacy skills in neurodivergent students. About Amanda Morin Amanda Morin is a neurodivergent neurodiversity activist, an award-winning author of six books, early childhood specialist, and nationally known speaker, deeply committed to fostering accessible and inclusive environments for neurodivergent individuals. She leverages her expertise in learning and child development, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), special education, advocacy, and mental health to distill complex data into easily digestible information for parents, educators, and employers who want to advance the mission of creating inclusive content, programs, and strategies to make the world accessible to all. Amanda proudly serves as a subject matter expert for the DUCC (Developing & Using Critical Comprehension) project for the Polarization & Extremism Research & Innovation Lab (PERIL) at American University, sits on the advisory board of Digital Promise's Learner Variability Project, the professional advisory board of Matan, and the Technical Expert Panel of the American Academy of Pediatrics Center of Excellence on Social Media & Youth Mental Health. This early insight fueled her dedication to transforming educational practices to be more affirming and supportive. In addition to her clinical work, Emily is the host of the popular Neurodiversity Podcast, where she explores a wide range of topics related to neurodivergence, often interviewing leading experts, educators, and individuals with lived experience. Things you'll learn Why neurodiversity-affirming practices in schools benefit all students, not just those with IEPs Why recognizing and supporting diverse learning styles is essential for effective teaching and how it's possible to do so in traditional classrooms Why fear of stigma and change remains a major barrier in education, and what we can do about it What schools and educators can do to create inclusive, neurodiversity-affirming classrooms What Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is and why it's a critical framework neurodivergent learners Resources mentioned Neurodiversity-Affirming Schools: Transforming Practices So All Students Feel Accepted & Supported by Emily Kircher-Morris and Amanda Morin The Neurodiversity-Affirming Teachers' Compact of Shared Beliefs (PDF) Neurodiversity University Education Hub Learn more about your ad choices. EP-118 Bob's Task Force Adventure On November 22nd 2024 the Washington State Domestic Extremism and Mass Violence Task Force held the first meeting via video conference call. The meeting introduced the the various members of the task force, contracted consultants, and support staff. Although it was not stated, it appears that Senator Elect Bill Ramos will lead the task force. The task force is follows years of work by Governor Elect, and Attorney General Bob Ferguson. In 2022 his office published the 2022 Domestic Terrorism Study. In 2023, after a failed effort to pass legislation HB-1333 that would have created a commission to single out and reeducate victims of misinformation, propaganda, and hate speech, the legislature budgeted funding for this task force within Ferguson's office. Representative Bill Ramos was the lead sponsor of that bill. This podcast takes a listen to the various members of the task force and tries to understand the genesis of its origins. Many believe that the legislative push for government social engineering surrounding "domestic extremism" has been lead by Bob Ferguson as Attorney General, and now Governor. However, during this meeting Senator Elect Ramos, Luis Moscoso, and Jaun Peralez all claim responsibility together. Perhaps the most intriguing member of the task force is the contracted consultant from Illinois and American University, both with PERIL - The Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab. Link to Attorney General's Office Active Groups - Domestic Extremism and Mass Violence Task Force I reached out to Juan Peralez to clarify his comment about the "oncoming Fuhrer" during the Zoom call. He responded to confirm he did use those words. You can hear the voicemail on Twitter using the link below. Ian Rogers of Napa and Jarrod Copeland of Vallejo were arrested and charged with plotting to blow up the Democrats Sacramento headquarters in 2021. Investigators seized 49 guns and several pipe bombs from Rogers and more guns from Copeland. Prosecutors alleged that the two were specifically motivated to violence by President Donald Trump's election loss, the lie that the election was stolen, and the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. They belonged to a radical right wing ideology called the Three Percenters, which was founded in 2008 by militia leader Mike Vanderboegh in reaction to the election of President Barack Obama. The loosely-affiliated movement has many different groups under different names. Rogers and Copeland belonged to the Three Percent United Patriots or 3UP, a national group founded by Mike Morris in Colorado that organized and recruited on Facebook and conducted rogue border patrols in Arizona. Prior to his arrest, Rogers had numerous contacts with law enforcement, including a domestic violence arrest he was not prosecuted for. Some Solano County Sheriff's deputies have displayed support for the Three Percenter movement online, including Daniel “Cully” Pratt, the brother of actor Chris Pratt, Sgt. Roy Stockton, also a Vacaville city councilmember, and Deputy Dale Matsuoka, the department's homeless outreach coordinator. Sheriff Tom Ferrara said that before Jan. 6, he had never heard of Three Percenters. Guests: Shane Bauer, a reporter who went undercover with 3UP in 2016 for Mother Jones, and Kurt Braddock, a fellow in the Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab at American University.

Today's news cycles are filled with stories of polarizing information, soundbites, opposing viewpoints, and shocking current events. Where is the surge of right-wing extremism coming from? And how far does it extend into media, culture, and identity? This episode answers these questions and more. It also features an introduction by SOC Dean Sam Fulwood, and a conversation between the following panelists: Kurt Braddock, Ph.D Asst. Prof. in the School of Communication Prof. Braddock studies the way that language and words affect radicalization processes, and how language can be used to counteract radicalization processes. He also studies how propaganda and messaging affect people psychologically, and inspire them to engage in violence on behalf of their radical ideologies. Cynthia Miller-Idriss, Ph.D Sociologist and Prof. in the School of Public Affairs and School of Education Co-Founder and Director of the Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL) Prof. Miller-Idriss studies symbols and youth cultures, communication systems and signs systems through iconography, graffiti, tshirts, memes, and youth culture. Her personal research also focuses on the far right. The Lab focuses on interventions across the ideological spectrum. It looks at disinformation, propaganda, persuasive extremist tactics, and how to interrupt them. Brian Hughes, Ph.D Research Assistant Prof. in the School of Public Affairs Co-Founder and Associate Director of PERIL Prof. Hughes studies digital communication technologies and their interaction with political and religious extremism and fringe cultures. He focuses on how fringe cultures and extremist individuals and movements use communication technology (digital), and how the affordances of digital communication technology shape the outlooks, operational styles, identity, and selfhood that these extremist groups develop and evolve over time. The work at PERIL centers the needs of victims and survivors of this violence.

There are a few great organizations in our country that have decades-long reputations as effective agents against the crushing impact of hate and racism. In this episode I shared a very personal, yet highly informative conversation with Tafeni English, the wise and warm-hearted Director of the CIVIL RIGHTS MEMORIAL at the Southern Poverty Law Center. Tafeni English first joined the SPLC in 1997 as a research analyst for the Intelligence Project. She later served as the first director of Teaching Tolerance, now called Learning for Justice. Since the early 1970's, the Southern Poverty Law Center, in Montgomery, Alabama, has been dismantling white supremacy, strengthening intersectional movements, and advancing the human rights of all people. This podcast exists to share my deep-dive into learning the layers of realities of life in America for Black people in this very white-centric country of ours… realities that never penetrated my awareness until George Floyd's senseless murder by a white police officer. Some have told me they think what I'm doing is hard, and I get why they think that, but for me it's harder to remain tethered to filtered facts and false narratives, causing me to unconsciously engage in the unwarranted, unjust, imbalanced, disrespectful, harmful and just plain wrong systems of separation that seek to divide people based on their skin color. I love sharing this learning journey, I love and deeply respect the people I've been learning from on this discovery journey, and I'm hoping you'll subscribe, and leave a rating, maybe even sign up to donate $2.00 a month to help me hire someone to do the tech stuff for uploading these episodes… so that more shy but well-intentioned members of the ‘white' race can learn alongside you and me. If enough people put in that $2.00 a month, it would save me hours of time and make a serious difference for my efforts here. But whether or not you donate, the same learning experience will be here for everyone, because nothing else would make sense… so… … Welcome to the One White Woman podcast. My name is Nini White, and I hope you know how very grateful I am to be sharing this beautiful and healing learning with you. So how can we coexist, or even reach a state of mutual understanding, with these people? It's not an overstatement to say that your personal happiness, as well as the future of the planet, may rest in part in our collective ability to hone these skills.  My guest today has done this work in some of the most extreme ways imaginable. She is a reformed neo-Nazi by the name of Shannon Foley Martinez who now works to deradicalize extremists. She's also a consultant at American University's Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab. In this conversation, we talk about how she got into the white power movement, how she got out of it, her methods for de-radicalizing people who are still in the movement, how she applies those methods to more mundane conversations across the many lines of differences that run through our society—and how you can, too. Just a quick note - you'll hear some background noise, from a lawnmower and a barking dog— but that's just the reality of recording podcasts in the middle of a pandemic. Also, as you might imagine, we hit on some pretty sensitive material here, including discussions of hate-fueled violence, racism, sexual assault, and homophobia.  We also want to deeply thank and recognize mental health professionals for your support.
