Jennifer A. O'Brien, MSOD, joins me to discuss a topic that we all need more understanding around: caregiving. In her book Care Boss: Leadership Strategies and Resources for Family Caregivers she draws from over 35 years in healthcare leadership and personal caregiving experiences to share practical tools, organizational strategies, and compassionate insights for supporting loved ones through serious illness. How can we take stock of what is needed? Where do we turn for help? How can we step into the role of a Care Boss with confidence and clarity? Grounded in her time as an interim CEO of clinical practices and her own deep caregiving journey, this conversation and this book are filled with pragmatic guidance. Yet, she also touches on the immeasurable aspects of caregiving. Is there any way to measure what we give and what we get as a caregiver?

Episode 101: Rev. Michael Sean Harvey, MSOD, MSEd & His Book, Warrior Compassion: Unleashing The Healing Power Of Men ABOUT SEAN Sean is a TEDx Speaker and founder of Warrior Compassion Men's Studio. Sean is an Interfaith Minister whose book, Warrior Compassion: Unleashing the Healing Power of Men offers a roadmap for men's soul-healing as a catalyst for systems change. Sean brings 25 years of experience in leadership and organizational development consulting and taught organizational behavior and change at Cornell, NYU, and Baruch College CUNY. His work focuses on deepening compassionate humanity into hyper-masculine systems and developing leaders as emergent facilitators, compassionate bridge builders, and conscious change agents equipped to transform systems and heal cultures on a global scale. His current research focuses on facilitating bridges across polarized divides. CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS When Sean was asked to show his heart instead of his polish. Sean's pillars of authenticity, connection, and purpose. The messaging for healthy masculinity, for deeper connection, for healing, and for breaking down the walls of isolation and disconnection. "You're not broken, but you might be wounded." "We've had toxic conditioning and faulty teaching." When we're born, we have everything within us. Where shame breeds. "Let's stop saying what the answer is and start creating a set of questions for men to be in their own inquiry, to discover their own truth of who it is that they are that reflects their journey, that honors who they are, and that moves from a place of self-loathing of the ways that they're not measuring up to self-love for gratitude for who they are." The two things we can't do when talking about men's healing, men's growth, men's transformation. The power of seeing someone's humanity even if you don't agree with or abhor their views. he need to get out of the over-intellectualization we do on most topics. The four existential question in every one of Sean's engagements. The difference between learning how to behave vs. learning how to be. How do we heal the wounds that hold us back from being compassionate? The Shame Spiral The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Sean is, What kind of wounds do you need to address and heal in order to move forward with your life and live your truth? Episode 81: Mboone Umbima, MSOD & Her Book, Reflect and Renew: A New Year Workbook This is Mboone's second visit to The Book Leads Podcast. In March of 2022, in Episode 20, Mboone shared with me the story behind the message of and vision for her book, Thank You: The 29 Day Gratitude Challenge. In this episode, Mboone shares some best practices she's developed for assessing her life at the turn of each New Year. For instance, one of her many practices is going through her phone's pictures to remember the energy of the moments throughout the year as the days went by. This process helps her tie moments to the energy she wants to keep and expand on that while recognizing the energy that serves no purpose and should be jettisoned. When it comes to her books, Thank You sought to offset the fear borne out of the uncertainty during the COVID-19 panedemic while Reflect and Renew seeks to build off that understanding of gratitude in a more strategic focus to determine what has served us and what has not in our our approach to life and work. It serves as a guide to help the reader truly, deeply, and carefully reflect. I love the energy Mboone brings to everything she does, whether it's her work in wildlife conservation through the David Rio foundation, her leadership role at David Rio Chai & Tea, Inc., or her numerous memberships across various boards she serves on in her community. She provides a reminder for us to get ourselves right -- to align our lives and work with our hearts and values -- so we can bring the best of ourselves to the world around us. It's an ongoing process to recognize and reinforce the energies we want to keep while calling out and letting go of the energies we don't. CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS How she and the family members who inspired to serve the greater good her are in the people business and making the world a better place business. How painting a vision, as Martine Luther King, Jr. did, creates permanence in which that vision can outlive the leaders who created it. Everything is energy, and it's the flow of energy that creates. Ego is about survival, not thinking. What would happen if you chose change instead of change choosing you? The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Mboone is, How do you review your life and work to determine what is working for you and what is not? We are delighted to have Darcy Luoma joining us today! Darcy is the author of the book Thoughtfully Fit. She has spent many years as a coach, training teams and organizations to work better and achieve thoughtful fitness in all their professional endeavors. Today's discussion is based on Darcy's extensive research, coupled with her practical experience. She joins us to shed light on the principles and strategies that form the foundation of becoming thoughtfully fit within a business setting. Bio: Darcy Luoma, CPCC, CSP, MCC, BCC, ORSCC, MSOD is the CEO of Darcy Luoma Coaching & Consulting, a company that specializes in creating high-performing people and teams. She's a sought-after coach and consultant who has worked in forty-eight industries, with more than five hundred organizations, impacting tens of thousands of leaders and employees. Darcy is the author of Thoughtfully Fit: Your Training Plan for Life & Business Success, published by Harper Horizon. Darcy has been coaching since 2004. She is one of America's most highly credentialed coaches, having earned the prestigious Master Certified Coach certification from the International Coach Federation, a distinction held by less than 4% of coaches in the world. In 2012, the University of Wisconsin–Madison sought out Darcy to design its rigorous nine-month Certified Professional Coach training program. She has served variously as the program's director, lead instructor, and director of training and quality assurance since its inception. Before Darcy founded her business in 2013, she served as the director of U.S. Senator Herb Kohl's office for twelve years, did national advance work for the White House, worked for two presidential campaigns, and served as a trusted senior advisor to a governor. Darcy has a Master of Science in Organization Development from Pepperdine University. She received the distinguished Certified Speaking Professional™ award from the National Speakers Association, the largest speaker association in the world. She has spoken at more than five hundred events, in front of audiences ranging from five to five thousand. For the last twenty-five years, she has been an avid triathlete and Ironman. She uses her grit and determination in both her athletic and professional endeavors. Along with her favorite job being a mom of two energetic teenage daughters, Darcy enjoys adventure travel, yin yoga, kickboxing, spicy chai lattes, and afternoon naps. Darcy's Story Darcy's professional path initially led her into government and politics, working for a U.S. Senator for over a decade. However, in 2012, the senator she worked for retired without seeking to be re-elected. Then, a pivotal question from her coach changed her life and encouraged her to envision a future without regrets, and Darcy made a bold leap into entrepreneurship. With the support of her then-husband, who took on the role of a full-time stay-at-home dad, she launched her own business in early 2013, defying the odds of small business failure. Then, in March 2016, her life took an unexpected turn when her husband was arrested for a serious crime. Darcy found herself navigating a tumultuous legal system, undergoing a divorce, and suddenly becoming a single mother with sole custody. Amidst all the chaos, she embarked on a journey of healing and recovery, later writing a book about her experiences. She subsequently learned that everyone has traumatic experiences and has challenges and hurdles to overcome in life. Overcoming Challenges with the Thoughtfully Fit Model After Darcy's husband was arrested, she had to test her concept of being thoughtfully fit. She emphasizes the importance of pausing, thinking, and then acting when faced with challenges and encourages people to have faith that things will be okay, even when it seems impossible. She highlights the significance of training and practices to develop thoughtfully fit responses and actions when confronted with adversity. A Practical Technique to Help with Pausing Darcy believes that it is essential to practice Thoughtfully Fit skills to be able to respond effectively to challenges. However, it is often hard to pause, especially when we witness an injustice or feel conflicted about our values. Darcy explains that everyone has different default responses, like pausing, thinking, or acting when facing challenges. She points out that our strengths can become weaknesses when taken to the extreme. She shares a practical technique called the Pause Pinch for those who struggle with pausing. It involves squeezing a reflexology point to reduce tension and calm the nerves. Navigating Conflict in Teams Most successful teams have healthy conflicts, so it is essential to create a psychologically safe environment where teams can navigate their conflicts, disagree with one another, and voice their opinions respectfully. Darcy highlights the significance of articulating and planning for a psychologically safe culture within a team. Encouraging open dialogue, respecting differing perspectives, and addressing the aftermath of decisions contribute to building a harmonious and productive team culture. Healthy Leadership A team leader must consider the opinions of team members, make decisions, and ask what is required for team members to support those decisions. Darcy emphasizes the importance of addressing concerns immediately to prevent post-meeting discussions and triangulation. She explains that leaders should lead, follow, or get out of the way when responding to situations and team dynamics. Handling Toxic Team Members Darcy stresses the importance of maintaining a healthy team environment and preventing the spread of toxic behavior. Managing toxic team members who resist change or cooperation despite coaching and conversations can be challenging. If all attempts to address their toxicity have failed, the best action is to part ways with the toxic individual because allowing their behavior to persist could negatively impact the morale and culture of the rest of the team. Maintaining Work-Life Balance and Prioritizing Self-Care Darcy maintains her sanity and a work-life balance as a business owner and mother by setting boundaries, minimizing extensive travel, and prioritizing her workouts. She explains that her commitment to regular exercise contributes to her overall well-being. She discovered the strategy of delegating tasks and recognizing her unique abilities to improve her work-life balance and productivity, allowing her to focus on things that only she can do as the CEO and Founder of her business. In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about how helping men to heal will help all of us to thrive. So much of the dysfunction we experience in today's workplaces is rooted in the lack of compassion we have for ourselves, our fragile egos, and the way we perceive others as threats. This is much deeper than impostor syndrome. While we tend to focus on women's challenges in the workplace, a giant missing piece of the puzzle is how we understand men's experience. When men are in pain, and so many of them are, they hurt others on small or large scales. My guest this week is Sean Harvey, author of the new book Warrior Compassion, Unleashing the Healing Power of Men. Sean is an organization development consultant, an interfaith minister and much, much more. One of the things I find most fascinating about his work is the healing work he does with men in hyper-masculine systems, such as police forces and even right-wing extremist groups. Here, Sean and I discuss what our DEI conversations are missing and how compassion will lead us to far greater levels of inclusion. About My GuestSean Harvey, MSOD, MSEd, is an organization development consultant, master facilitator and mentor, professor, interfaith minister, TEDx speaker, and men's soul adventure guide. He received the Saul A. Silverman 2021 Award for Conflict Resolution and Healing from the International Organization Development Association for his healing work with men in hyper-masculine systems. His work in personal, organizational, and societal transformation is inspired by twenty-five years of purpose, talent, and organization development consulting combined with having served on the faculties of Cornell, New York University, and Baruch College CUNY teaching courses in the areas of leadership, management, and organizational behavior and change. Summary In Part 2 of this episode, Renée and I explored the antidote to fear in the workplace: love. Love can manifest itself in various ways in professional settings: > Leaders providing genuine care for employees by showing interest and respect and by creating an environment of belonging > Workgroups functioning like a family – team building and acknowledgment of accomplishments > Supporting individuals during personal crises. Other critical considerations for a love-based culture include > Sustainability, as new employees join the organization and the challenge of leadership turnover. > Screening job candidates for their capacity for love. > Leading with human-centered messaging. Through her research, Renée discovered various fear stories, including > uncertainty after a change initiative, > toxic experiences through betrayal and loss of trust, and > public shaming, harassment, and discrimination. These fear experiences can originate from leaders and team members and have significant physical and emotional consequences for individuals. Fear-based cultures can also have detrimental effects on organizations, such as reduced productivity and higher turnover rates. MagaMama with Kimberly Ann Johnson: Sex, Birth and Motherhood
In this episode, Kimberly and Ali discuss how food intersects with physiology and psychology. Specifically, they discuss how to identify our physical and emotional needs, how to send safety signals to our bodies, and how to unpack some of the deeper impacts of socialization and culture around eating and body image. We may be more connected than ever before; yet studies show we are also lonelier. Further, research indicates that for the first time, the emerging generation (Gen Z) is feeling more isolated and lonelier than the elderly population, and this was pre-Covid. Ryan Jenkins and Steven Van Cohen share with Kevin that we underestimate how much we need connection. When people show up lonely for work, they are 7x more likely to be disengaged, 5x more likely to miss work, and twice as likely to think about quitting their job. We need to be intentional about our connections and less transactional. This episode was recorded during our Mental Fitness Day, a Virtual LeaderCon event in April 2022. Key Points In this episode, Ryan and Steven discuss loneliness in the workplace. They share the difference between loneliness and solitude. They talk about belonging as an antidote to loneliness. Meet Ryan and Steven Name: Ryan Jenkins and Steven Van Cohen Their Story: Ryan Jenkins, CSP and Steven Van Cohen, MSOD are founders of LessLonely.com, the world's #1 resource for addressing workplace loneliness and creating more belonging at work. They are also the authors of Connectable: How Leaders Can Move Teams from Isolated to All In. Highlights: “One of our primary goals is to destigmatize loneliness, and to make it much more accessible because it's a universal human condition and we all experience it. So it shouldn't be shameful, it's simply a signal.” [8:10] Ryan explains the stigma of loneliness and how he and his co-author, Steven Van Cohen, want to help. “Let's bring the book front and center; Connectable, what's the big idea behind it? It's not just a book about loneliness…is it?” [11:52] Marcel introduces Ryan's book, ready to dive deep about the meaning of loneliness in the workplace. “Work is the most fertile ground to lessen loneliness because there is routine, and there's meaningful relationships that can occur, there's purpose, there's learning. There's all these loneliness lifelines that we can all grasp onto.” [12:22] Ryan shares the thinking behind his book why connection is important and how work can make the difference. “This is so real for people that are listening, they understand ‘oh this is happening right now'....let's start with the why…why are so many workers suffering right now from loneliness?' [15:00] As Marcel relates the rising loneliness rates to his audience, Ryan explains the big ticket reasons as busyness and social media! “Loneliness was an epidemic pre COVID, and then COVID comes along…BAM...now we're in crisis, there is an increase in loneliness and isolation. People go remote for the first time, they don't know how to manage…that work life blend.” [18:30] Acknowledging the escalation of loneliness caused by the pandemic and the increase of remote work, Marcel challenges how to engage isolated workers. “If we experience loneliness our reaction should be to reach out and connect with others but what happens is we turn inward and it just creates this downward spiral where we isolate further.” [26:46] In Connectable, Ryan and his co-author share 10 ways to identify signals of loneliness, here he shares a few ways to see this in your co-workers or friends. “Even as an introvert, you still need to connect as well. It is in your human design to do that.” [32:50] Marcel recognizes that there are some personality types that may be assumed to prefer less connection, but still genuinely benefit from interaction. “Leaders at any level of the organization, one of the best ways is to communicate clearly. Make sure everyone knows what's going on: What we're doing in the organization, why we're doing things in the organization. For every leader, they should make sure that people know how they're fitting into that bigger picture.” [43:30] What can leader's do to create belonging in the work environment? Ryan shares some closing advice for leaders to foster connection in their organizations. Resources: Less Lonely Connectable: How Leaders Can Move Teams From Isolated to All In

THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… workers who are seeking validation and understanding in the loneliness of their workplace environment and managers who are striving to create a more connected workforce to inspire, engage, and properly appreciate their employees. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… While managing the emotional state of employees might not directly exist on a team leader's job description, the fact is that disengaged and lonely employees are less productive and more susceptible to burnout. We must find the balance between caring about people and getting stuff done if we want to succeed as a healthy workplace. WHAT I LOVE MOST… The business case for caring about employee loneliness is clear: workers who feel seen and heard perform better for your team. Building workplace connections is in your best interest because it inspires people to come to work as the best versions of themselves – everyone wins. I'd like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.Have you ever been at work and thought, “I can do that better”, or looked around and thought, “Things need to change here”, but felt overwhelmed or powerless to effect these changes? Here's the thing, you're a leader now. You have a voice at the table now, all those times that you complained about the company, the culture, the boss, all of it. Now, you have a chance to start making those changes. They'll very likely be incremental changes, but any forward change is a start to systemic and institutional change. And so, in this episode, we'll discuss these feelings and thoughts, and then go one step further by providing some advice and insight into ways that you might be able to make these changes, and we'll do this by speaking with Haley Grayless, MSOD, founder and CEO of Vaxa Collective, where we'll hear her story of how she helps change toxic cultures by revolutionizing leadership and management in the workplace.Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front is humbled to have been listed in the Top 20 for Best Canadian Leadership-themed podcasts in 2021.Reviews are the best way for us to know what we are doing right, what we are doing wrong, and what we should talk about in the future, so please click on the links below and let us know if this episode was helpful. Growing up in Billings, Montana, Michael Leckie was one of those kids that everyone would seek out when they needed to talk about important issues. This sparked his interest in psychology and he thought he would eventually become a psychotherapist. In college, he prepared for that path, but for reasons he cannot explain he lost interest in it. Upon graduation, Michael got what he called the “worst job in the world” working for the county welfare system in Southern California which he experienced as a horribly dysfunctional department. Interestingly, Michael wondered if he applied his psychology degree to help organizations. He decided to go to grad school for an MBA. One of his first classes was in organizational behavior. The professor was impressed with Michael's participation and approached him inquiring why he wasn't enrolled in the MSOD (Master of Science in Organizational Development) degree program. He was completely unfamiliar with that discipline, but once he became aware of it, he withdrew from the MBA and applied for the MSOD. The rest, as they say, is history. Over the past 20 years, Michael has brought leadership and consulting experience to several companies in driving transformation within a digital world. He believes that organizations can only make quality digital transformations by addressing both the social and technical systems of which they are made. Michael has led transformations and cultural change from startups and private equity to small and medium enterprises to fortune 50 companies across a wide variety of industries, and sectors. In the past 15 years, he has focused on the emergence of the increased need for change demanded by our digital world. Michael has loved every minute of it. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Michael's journey: Michael shares his expertise in his book, The Heart of Transformation, Build the Human Capabilities That Change Organizations for Good. He speaks internationally on the art and science of leadership, digital leadership, culture change, influencing and communication skills, and the changing role of the CXO leader in a socio-technical world. Althea's 24 Hour Challenge I want you to make 10 sales calls in the next 24 hours, 10 calls. I want to give you some guidelines around it, because I know you can do this, I want you to take one of your best-selling offers. And I want you to think back to your past clients, prospective clients, people who you see online, who just light you up, whom you would love to work with. I want you to write down their names, write down their contact information, and I want you to pick up the phone and invite them to learn about this offer that you believe will help them. Now it's really important that you truly believe it will help them. And the goal is to have a conversation with them, not to leave it on their voice message, but to really have a conversation with them, and hear what their goals are, what challenges they're coming up with. And if you truly, truly believe that you can help them share how, with this offer. This is what I'm inviting you to do in the next 24 hours. I want you to embrace it with your sales courage, knowing that your gifts are valuable, that people are praying about your services right now that they are in so much pain, they don't know what to do, and they're praying and hoping and wishing that “someone” i.e., YOU will provide a solution to their problem. You can't get this wrong, you will absolutely make money. Will you get some NO's? Probably. That's okay. Because NO's are not personal. What this is about is you getting outside of your sales comfort zone about you taking a leadership role, and inviting people to solve their problem for good. So that's your challenge. I'm so excited for you, you can absolutely do this. If you want to make more money then this is a route that will help you. Let us know how the challenge goes by posting on our Instagram or Facebook page. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/authoritycreators/message
