Last year, the American fast-food industry experienced significant transformations. Several chains expanded their market reach and others innovated to adapt to evolving consumer preferences. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about the top 10 restaurant chains in America, ranked by their 2023 revenue. She not only highlights their financial achievements but also their influence on employment and their broad range of offerings. The top three highest-earning fast-food chains in 2023 include Starbucks, McDonald's and Chick-fil-A. Other chains that made the list include Chipotle Mexican Grill, Domino's Taco Bell and Wendy's, among others. The top 10 restaurant chains excel in generating revenue and play a crucial role in shaping dining experiences across America. The team is surprised to learn that Starbucks was the highest-earning restaurant chain on the list and wonders how much third-party delivery apps impacted each company's revenues.  Also in this episode, Sydney talks about a new rule implemented by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) that mandates lower Salmonella levels in frozen breaded and stuffed chicken products. Starting in 2025, poultry producers will be required to decrease Salmonella to very low levels in targeted chicken products. Despite explicit cooking instructions on labels, the persistence of Salmonella-related illnesses underscores the necessity for strict regulations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that Salmonella is the leading cause of foodborne illnesses, with chicken being a significant contributor. Approximately one in every 25 chicken packages at grocery stores is contaminated with Salmonella. This targeted regulation paves the way for broader Salmonella control measures, now under consideration by federal authorities. The team applauds the USDA for considering Salmonella an adulterant and wonders whether this rule will reduce foodborne-illness outbreaks.  They have put a Hamburger with French fries, chicken nuggets from Mc Donald for 4 month outside in the subtropical climate of Puerto Rico. After 4 month still the food was there, it was just only dried; no insect had touched it… This means there are so much chemicals inside of the food from Mac Donald that even insects are running away from such poison food. It is well known that  KFC is putting arsenic inside of the chicken because of the danger of salmonellae … still this should be food. And this is mainly true for all these fast food chains restaurants…They are putting so much chemicals inside the food as necessary, to keep the  food fresh for a long time and that the food is delicious and addicted… The combination of white sugar, sweet- acid, cheap oil, gluten, chemicals… makes the food addicted, for instance:  Ketchup, mayonnaise, French fries, Pizza, Tarts, Apply pie, Potatoes chips, hot dog …If we go farer and look on the beverages that the fast food chains restaurants serve like: sodas, Coca Cola, coffee, beer … then for sure fast food chains restaurants are making the people ill….  A test had proved that children which eating regularly food from the fast food chains are worse in the school than children who don't go to the fast food restaurants… Fast food chain restaurants makes the people fat and causes  Obesity,  Diabetes, Cancer, heart attack….We don't need to go to the fast food chains restaurants, they are even not cheap… Small restaurants with less dishes are normally much more delicious and healthy. Still we have the problem that every cheap restaurant like to save money on the ingredients. This means they cook with cheap oil, using white sugar, ketchup, mayonnaise, white flour… In Thailand they have found out that the cheap Thai Food makes you fat and ill….  In the USA is a law, that protects the Pharmaceutic industry, when they produce heavy poison medicaments that kills people, nobody can make lawsuit against  them… Obama made it worse that today the food producer can produce, GMO Food, irradiation Food, or put as much pesticides and other poison inside the food without that they have to tell you what is inside… and a lawsuit is quite impossible to win against the food producer. In veggie burgers for instant,  they found even rat meat…. And in Europe it is not so, they have to tell you what is inside…. For instance for the beer, they have to describe that the beer is chemical like in the USA, or GMO food, irradiation Food has to be labeled … In Europe you can't sell such awful food… because the people are much more aware it. My video: How dangerous are the Fast food chains restaurants? https://youtu.be/ieaySBdfj8oMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast.A/How-dangerous-are-the-Fast-food-chains-restaurants.mp3

California restaurants are reportedly laying off staff and reducing hours for other team members in an effort to cut costs ahead of a California state law taking effect on April 1 that will raise fast-food workers' hourly wage to $20. In the months leading up to the wage mandate, California eateries, particularly pizza joints, have established a plan to cut jobs, according to state records obtained by The Wall Street Journal. Pizza Hut and Round Table Pizza — a Menlo Park, Calif.-founded chain of 400 pizza parlors, mostly on the West Coast — have said they plan to lay off around 1,280 delivery drivers this year, according to records that major employers must submit to the state before large layoffs, The Journal reported. Pizza Hut already sent notices to employees informing them of their last day. Michael Ojeda, a Pizza Hut driver for eight years in Ontario, Calif., received one of the notes from Pizza Hut franchisee Southern California Pizza in December telling him that his last day of work would be in February. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

Fast-Food Chains Brace for Impact as California Ushers in New Wage Mandate

Real News Now Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 28, 2024 4:42

Restaurateurs across myriad fast-food chains in California are notifying their patrons of an unavoidable increase in prices as a new wage guideline specifically for the industry is about to take form. This specific mandate, put forward by California's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, is set to alter the current wage baseline in the sector significantly, starting from the first day of April. This novel legislation, endorsed in September last year by Governor Newsom, pushes up the minimum hourly wage in the fast-food industry from the statewide standard of $16. It specifically sets a new industry-specific benchmark at $20 per hour, thus impacting the operational costs of these businesses. With the enforcement of the new wage guideline only a matter of days away, numerous fast-food establishments are strategizing ways to balance their increased expenditure. This recalibration will likely bring about noticeable spikes in the prices customers pay, as well as potential workforce cuts. For some owners in the industry, the effects of this wage hike are being seen as untenable. Considering increasing automation as a potential solution, these entrepreneurs may choose to shift their operations out of California entirely, in search of locations with more conducive business environments. Echoing these sentiments, Harry Holzer, a name recognized in academia as a professor at Georgetown University, and formerly serving as the chief economist at the Labor Department, voiced concern over the potential disruption this could cause. He mentioned that businesses would potentially turn more eagerly towards automation as a way to counterbalance this wage increase. Holzer put forth the possibility that several franchise operations might find it worthwhile to consider relocation outside the state. These could be seen as inevitable side effects to ensure survival and sustain profitability amidst these new wage norms. This incoming legislation is on course to land California with the second-highest minimum wage for workers in the fast-food industry across the nation. The only area that currently surpasses this impending wage floor sits just outside Seattle, which has set a ceiling of $20.29 for select workers. The Governor's bill, signed off in the previous calendar year, will apply considerable pressure on a vast majority of fast-food chains to reevaluate and adjust their payment scales upward. However, the bill did introduce certain exceptions, creating some uneven footing for several businesses in the industry. Amongst these exemptions, it appears that businesses with operations involving not just the preparation but also the sell of bread as a standalone menu item received special mention. This clause in the bill has garnered some inevitable attention. With this exemption causing some ripples, questions arose regarding the popular chain, Panera's conformity to the incoming wage rules. Governor Newsom, however, decisively refuted any claims of Panera being exempt from this new law, thereby guaranteeing its enforcement across the sector. Regardless of any initial confusion, Flynn declared his intent to lift the hourly wage across all his Panera operations up to $20. This pledge came in response to criticism that the law had an exception, despite public affirmation from the Governor about its universal application. This unfolding wage hike, though still on the horizon, has already begun catalyzing significant conversations about its impact within the industry. The adjustment period forthcoming with this sizable wage hike will likely be a challenging one for fast-food operators in California. As the industry grapples with this new wage revision, it offers an intriguing study into the balance between worker rights, fair compensation, and the operational pragmatism needed for businesses to continue delivering affordable meals to a wide scope of patrons. Finally, while the consequent price fluctuations and potential job cuts paint a daunting picture, it remains to be seen how the fast-food industry will navigate this new landscape. One thing remains certain: whether through automation, relocation, or simple cost adjustment, the industry will find a way to adapt and persist in light of this new legislation. Amber has a new friend who has been getting a little too cozy in her car, and she didn't meet him at the 2024 Emmy Awards. Meanwhile, Lacey's dating app is a magnet for the cooky, prompting her and Amber to unveil their latest creation, a segment they coined 'Please Slide Out of Lacey's DMs!' Having sifted through a series of amusingly unsuccessful attempts to win Lacey's affection, the sister duo then steers the conversation to the ultimate debate: determining the top spot in the fast-food hierarchy in another new segment called 'That's Rank'! An AI Therapist? A Pixelated Talking Parrot? Ruining the Lives of Sims? These are just a few of the possibilities one could have found 30 years ago during the rise of the MS-DOS computer game. Episode 128 of the podcast will reminisce about some legendary titles that helped pave the way for the modern wonders of gaming. Mill Hill in West Yarmouth on Cape Cod was a haven of entertainment for nearly a century. The Mill Hill Club is the most well-known establishment while the Mill Hill Pavilion was the original. Sandwiched in between was a spot that was both a novelty and a success story. The Mill Hill Arena spent nearly 40 years supplying Cape Cod with world-class professional wrestling and amateur boxing. Learn its story this week. When it comes to fast food, not all chains are created equally. For every McDonald's and Wendy's that has become ingrained in society, countless others might have had success but ultimately faded away. This week's Top 5 looks at discontinued fast food chains. Whether as big as any chain ever, a relative flash in the pan, or too ahead of its time, many different roads led to these chains ending. There is also a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule featuring one of the most infamous crimes of the 20th century. The Black Dahlia murder was equal parts sad and gruesome, and surprisingly Elizabeth Short has a connection to New England. Furthermore, this investigation found that in some of these fast-food restaurants, their statement that “Many products only include 60 percent meat alongside additives and proteins” included their chicken products—meaning 40 percent of the product is things like additives, preservatives, and other different proteins. ⭕️ Sign up for our NEWSLETTER and stay in touch

Former vice president of her Miami-based gay-straight alliance Milly Tamarez joins Sam and George to start some difficult conversations about America's relationship to fast food, and it's about time! Questions include: Do "Happy Meals" stigmatize people who are depressed? Is Chick-fil-A mocking us by giving all its sauces really gay names? Is it unethical that McDonald's introduces children to the concept of brand partnerships at such a young age? And of course: Would you like that with fries?!
