Hello Adventurers! Welcome to the Year of Our Yoshi-p Twenty Twenty Four. It's going to be an exciting year, this 2024! Not only it's the Lunar Year of the Dragon, it's ALSO the year of the next Final Fantasy XIV expansion: Dawntrail! And earlier in January we got a whole bunch of announcements made at the 2024 Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Tokyo, Japan. From the final CG teaser trailer, to Pictomancer, to hrothgals lion ladies, and even [REDACATED], if it was in the keynote, we are here to talk into microphones about them.Spoiler Levels: Hot! We may say it's medium to hot in the episode, but let's be honest. If you don't care all that much about spoilers, they are medium. If you do care, they are hot. Maybe not Blazin' Knock Your Butt Off... But you'll probably will want to wrap up the latest stuff in Endwalker before you hit play.OSMnotesThanks to Tobias for continuing to pitch hit edit the podcast for Anna, it has been a life saver. Since we almost just go in order of the keynote, we don't really have Time Cues this time. Just kick back, put the podcast on, and go grind some tomes. Tobis did do, however, is that he gave use what music is used in the episode. Which are The Carbuncle Chronicle Theme by Anna and DJ Inubito, "Battle on the Big Bridge" by The Black Mages, "Return to Oblivion (Scions & Sinners) by The Primals, "And Love You Shall Find" FFXIV Shadowbringers, and "Heartless (Chiptune)" by TESTS04.We also have YouTube Channels now! About a month ago we were being nostalgic about that time when we used to do a spoiler show for a Final Fantasy XIV expansion, and then do a final show talking about all of the content that releases after the expansion and leading into the next.  We had a few folks that were not caught up and we set a date in time of wanting to record this show on the 30th, just ahead of the Endwalker release mania.  Last night we recorded this show and quickly realized there was no way that we were going to cram it all into a single episode.  So as a result I bring you the Shadowbringers Epilogue show today covering patches 5.1, 5.2, and the wrap up of the Shadowbringers related story in 5.3.   Next week we will bring out the Endwalker Prologue show because really the 5.4, 5.5, and 5.55 content is teeing up the beginning of the next expansion more than resolving anything related to Shadowbringers.  I hope you as listeners enjoy both of these shows and it should go without saying that these are going to be full spoiler episodes as we cover everything we can remember that happened in each of the patches.

Geek to Geek Podcast

In This Episode: We talk about where we stand with the Final Fantasy franchise right now. There's the FFVII Remake Demo on PS4, some FFXIV Shadowbringers talk, and even Void getting to the FFXV DLC that really should have been part of the main game! FF7 Remake Demo, Misc Thoughts: Void - Combat is fine. Not the best, not the worst. Curious to dig into the materia system. Beej - it’s not great, but at least it’s not totally button mashing with no real depth Void - Likes it better than FFXV.  It feels more responsive. Beej - It feels like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy XV had a baby, and XV has the dominant genetics  Void really wants to replay it in “classic” mode to see how it feels. No jump button. Beej hates. You jump like in older 3d Zelda games, by running up to a ledge. It’s awkward. And I want to jump while running around, dangit. The buttons change their function based on combat, so if you get aggro and expect to dash away, think again. You’ve just opened up your tactics menu for a party member. The character swapping/menu opening during combat seems counterintuitive. Pressing X to open the menu instead of the D-Pad Up/Down made Beej constantly swap party members back and forth when all he needed was a Potion or to cast Thunder. Other SE games trained us that D-pad was how menus work in real-time ARPGs. Why change it now? WHY? It’s already obvious that it’s going to be much more fleshed out, both in terms of the world and the story. It will be filling in the gaps between the screens of the original while still making everything logically connect on the map is super impressive. Our primary concern is making the city of Midgar not seem samey all over. We want diverse locations and neighborhoods. The voice acting is top-notch -- except for Barrett. If he never speaks again, it will be too soon. Cloud and the others are all distinct and unique and it never felt out of place the way some voices feel in games. Talking to you as you move through the levels like in FFXV, getting to know your companions organically. Hype Level and Final Impressions? Void - much more excited (and I was already excited) BJ - I’ll buy it now. (Had cancelled my preorder and was waiting on initial opinions from people I trust) FFXV DLC Gladio - What if FFXV was a series of melee battle challenges? Prompto - What if FFXV was a Third person shooter? Ignis - What if FFXV was an area control game? There’s a part of Ignis’ story that should 100% be in the main game and not the DLC.  Can’t believe this got cut from the story of the main game. If there’s one DLC that you should play out of all of them… it’s this one. Ardyn - What if we had more of the background story of the main villain of the game? Makes him even more sympathetic and understandable Comrades - Just bad. Bad bad. Bad...bad. Bad. Final Fantasy XIV Austin started playing again with a new account on Leviathan, and so did Beej. Austin's character is Vinn Astoltia and Beej is Lesser Wyrmsbane. No idea how much either of us will be on, but feel free to hit us up. We have a Free Company called Bluth. It's Arrested Development themed, and we have a house in Mist. Beej is kind of tired being the human lady he was through Heavensward and Stormblood. Likely gonna toss a tenner at the Mogstation to get a vial of fantasia to change my appearance. Let's be honest, he's gonna probably go back to Lalafell. Because Beej. Support the G2G Network! Email Subscribe: geektogeekmedia.com/subscribe Weekly Geekery Beej: Bonding on Netflix is funny, vulgar, and not for children. Morbidly fascinating and totally not for everyone. Dragon Quest X on Switch Austin’s how-to post did super well on the site and people went nuts on FB for it since someone broke it down on how easy it was to get working in the US. (https://geektogeekmedia.com/geekery/dragonquestaustin/how-to-play-dragon-quest-x-in-america-on-nintendo-switch-for-free/) The whole of 1.0 and part of 2.0 are basically a free trial now, and you can play up to 440 hours. Prologue is short, and you don’t really need to know Japanese to do it. (https://geektogeekmedia.com/geekery/dragonquestaustin/adventures-in-astoltia-part-1-playing-the-prologue/) Combat is interesting. It’s not MMOish at all. Turn-based and menu-based, too. Void: Waking Sleeping Beauty is great. Watch it to learn about how Disney almost wasn't an animation studio. Dooku Lost really feels like they’re trying to wrap up the prequel trilogy expanded universe with new canon material. A lot of the most recent books touch on that time period and clone wars is coming back out This is the first Dooku focused story that I’ve actually liked. It's put together as a full-cast audio drama This feels like them tying a bow on some things and cleaning up dangling plot threads before the High Republic era kicks off Support the Podcast on Patreon You can go to https://patreon.com/geektogeekcast to support the podcast, and you can get some cool stuff, too. S4E27 - 2019 Summer Games and Movies - “Mario Maker 2, Spider-Man, Shadowbringers, and More”

Geek to Geek Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 10, 2019 67:20

In This Episode: We discuss a bunch of the games and movies that are finally releasing this summer!  We cover things like Mario Maker 2, Spider-Man Far From Home, FFXIV Shadowbringers, Magic The Gathering Arena Core Set 2020, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Stranger Things Season 3, and more.  Plus we sneak in some bonus geekery near the end of the show and Beej gets a new furry friend. Things are finally releasing again!  The late spring / early summer slump looks like it’s over. Mario Maker 2 BJ - Making levels is a lot more fun than I thought it would be New components Void likes infinite Mario levels with more variety, but I don’t really do the level building We have an awesome Mario Maker 2 channel on our Discord server that you should totally join and share your creations! Mario has always been Void's favorite platformer The story mode is fun since you get ~100 levels designed by nintendo in the mario maker engine BJ - I love just taking some time and seeing what the “Newest” ones that have been uploaded are. I think that’s the most fun to me. I’m not generally a fan of the most popular ones Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Void forgot that he never really liked the PS1 era of Castlevania games. He is having a decent time with it but thinks he had more fun with the 8-bit version, Curse of the Moon. This feels like a modern iteration of the PS1 era of Castlevania games, so if you really enjoyed Symphony of the Night and want a modern version of that, then you really can't go wrong here. Magic: The Gathering Arena - Core Set 2020 Core cards and concepts that relaunch for the year They only use evergreen keywords It’s made to be much more approachable for new players Not as strong of a theme, which made more of an impact on Void than hethought. He didn’t realize how much the theme worked for him in the last few sets until he saw this core set that is basically theme-less. Mastery pass is like a season pass for the mastery tree and gives you bonus rewards Void is a bit less excited now that he sees what the Core Set 2020 is. He was most excited for premade decks because he loves piloting a good deck You earn stuff at every level if you have the season pass The free tier gets you things every few levels No unlocking premade decks It’s a new way to unlock card packs and cosmetics by leveling up XP is capped per day This replaces the 3 packs per week you could win before…(boo, hiss) The actual mastery orb tree is an offshoot of the leveling ideas… but it only unlocks cosmetic card looks The core of the system isn’t the mastery tree, it’s just the Fornite-like level up system No more collection resets even though it’s still technically beta Historic is any card currently in MTGA. Think Type 1 for physical cards. FFXIV Shadowbringers Character stories are as strong as ever. Expansion by expansion they keep getting better and better at writing really good emotional moments for characters  Political stories are less interesting than normal since this is set on a new world that we are not nearly as invested in Threads don’t get dropped, though. They’re paying off things they set up years and years ago in previous expansions. Villains are much much sympathetic and understandable (for the most part).World consumed by light and they need to bring darkness back They have legends about the warrior of darkness It’s doing a great job of tying into past events and characters while still being a completely new setting Kind of the Outland of FFXIV in a way… but executed a lot better. They mostly get away from the politics we know and it lets them tell more compelling character stories Duties (dungeons) pull no punches, even right from the beginning. Everyone who has gotten to this point has made it through so many complicated mechanics in past duties that they know they can challenge us Queue times are short because of the new tank class, Gunbreaker, which people are super excited to play. Stranger Things 3 No Spoilers, but many feels and better than Season 2 The story is tying up to where the final season (Season 4) should be pretty satisfying unless they really drop the ball. Hopper is awesome this season. Eleven is Eleven, which is great. Beej actually felt for Will this time around, which made him amazed. And Dustin and Steve's relationship continues to be the most delightful part of the show.  Spider-Man: Far From Home Beej loved this movie, and he thinks it is better than Homecoming, and part of the reason is that it’s so character centered. The villain(s) don’t matter so much as the relationships and how they impact the characters NIGHT MONKEY Such good discussions on Slack and Discord Spoilers in the cast for this one that we couldn't put in the notes. Geek to Geek Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 5, 2019 55:10

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: We discuss... spoilers! No, we're not trying to keep the topic from you. We are talking about how spoiler culture exists today and how radically different people can be when it comes to their reaction to spoilers.   In terms of when we were first introduced to the idea of spoilers and keeping things sacred, so to speak, differed for both of us. For Void, it was when Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was released. People would drive around at the book releases yelling what happened out of car windows and trying to ruin everyone else's fun.  For Beej, it was the movie The Sixth Sense when people wouldn't even discuss the movie before asking, "wait, have you seen it yet?" because the twist was such a big deal. And then there's the idea of not watching trailers or partaking in reviews for fear of spoilers ruining the media for you, whether it's a movie or a book or a video game. While for others, those are the sneak peeks and sometimes extra content that makes the wait for the new thing more enjoyable and great. Plus, we can't not talk about cultural movements like Game of Thrones or Avengers: Endgame because of the ridiculous way that we all reacted to spoilers. Even Disney was putting out a spoiler embargo until the first two weekends were finished to give people a chance to see it if they were really into the franchise. But then there's GoT where people would spoil the events of the episode while the episode was still airing with the idea that if you weren't watching it when it was on, you didn't care enough not to be spoiled. Just the idea of spoiler culture in general is interesting to us, and we wanted to give it a deeper dive than would have been possible otherwise. It came up during our Avengers: Endgame spoilercast, but amazingly, we didn't have enough time to talk about spoilers while we were talking spoilers. So here we are. Let us know what your thoughts on spoilers are! Weekly Geekery For Geekery Beej got Persona Q2, which might be the swan song of the Nintendo 3DS. It might be the last major 3DS release, but it has all the style of P5 on the PS4. He also (finally) started listening to The Adventure Zone and had a ton of questions for Void about the show. He also watched Always be My Maybe and John Wick (both of which are awesome) and got back into FFXIV Stormblood.   Speaking of Stormblood, Void wrapped up all the Stormblood patch content to prep for FFXIV Shadowbringers, and he talks about how well the politics and different storylines are brought together to lead into the new expansion. And in more Final Fantasy news, Void has started up another FF series playthrough, and he bounced off of 1-4 for various reasons. Not that they aren't good, but he thinks FFV is the place he will have the most enjoyment as he begins going back through the series chronologically. Tonight we talk about a bunch of differing topics… that sorta blend together into a mix of ideas.  We start off with some discussion of Thanksgiving Leftover abominations. From here Belghast talks a bit about his experiences with extremely Hardcore players on mobile phone games.  This sorta leads its way into discussions of MMO Design problems, which itself leads to talking about the FFXIV Shadowbringers expansion announcement. We discuss the problems with the Blue Mage and how the Limited Class construct is probably not the right way to do it.  This leads eventually into a discussion of the shenanigans that Tam and Kodra and crew have been up to in Fallout 76. Topics Discussed: Thanksgiving Leftover Abominations Hardcore Mobile Players MMO Design Problems Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringer Blue Mage Limited Job Fallout 76
