This poetic polymath was born in Cape Town, South Africa. The daughter of jazz musicians Sathima Bea Benjamin and Abdullah Ibrahim, she was raised in New York City and studied vocal performance at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School. Jean was destined to be an entertainer from her earliest days dancing with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. She is a versatile writer, musician, director, producer, actor, and lightning rod lyricist who enjoys expression in all mediums. Jean put rap music behind her in 2018, but has since self-released her music through her website and Bandcamp. Her latest album, Everything's Fine, was a collaboration with partner Quelle Chris, with cameos from Hannibal Buress, Nick Offerman, Michael Che, and John Hodgman.  Jean developed an online sitcom, wrote an audiobook, and created the non-denominational ministry called the Church of the Infinite You as a way of connecting and motivating people who don't do church. In this episode, she reminds young artists of the importance of getting yourself a good lawyer, and we discuss the power of the “F” word. If you haven't figured it out, Jean is a creative force; if she can dream it, she can deliver it. RockerMike and Rob discuss the Lunachicks. Lunachicks are an American punk rock band from New York City.[1] The band formed in 1987 and had been on hiatus since 2000, with the band reuniting in 2019.[2] The band cited influences including the Ramones, Kiss, and the MC5. Theo Kogan, Gina Volpe, and Sydney "Squid" Silver were students at New York City's Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts when they decided to form a band. Sindi Benezra, an acquaintance of Silver, was asked to join shortly after. They rehearsed and wrote material in Gina's bedroom for about a year. Their first composition, the lengthy "Theme Song", was about killing Kogan's and Silver's English teacher. The band played their first show in 1988 with Theo's then-boyfriend Mike on the drums. https://www.lunachicks.com/ https://m.facebook.com/LunachicksOfficial/ https://mobile.twitter.com/lunachicks?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor https://music.apple.com/us/artist/lunachicks/13828925 https://www.wmm.com/sponsored-project/pretty-ugly-the-story-of-the-lunachicks/ https://www.instagram.com/lunachicksofficial/?hl=en https://www.vogue.com/article/lunachicks-theo-kogan-new-book/amp Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ https://app.hashtag.expert/?fpr=roberto-rossi80 https://dc2bfnt-peyeewd4slt50d2x1b.hop.clickbank.net https://8bcded2xph1jdsb8mqp8th3y0n.hop.clickbank.net/?cbpage=nb Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-lumped-up-with-rob-rossi/id1448899708 https://open.spotify.com/show/00ZWLZaYqQlJji1QSoEz7a https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup #punkgirlsdoitbest #punkgirls #punkgirlsdoitbetter #punkgirlsofinstagram #punkgirlsrussian #punkgirlstyle #music #musicvideo #musician --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support

Our guest for Episode 61 is Esther Alcamo of Esther and the Exiles, a local band that plays around the Lake Norman area. Singer/songwriter/pianist Esther and host Hanna Schoenrock had a great conversation at the D9 Brewery in Cornelius--however, the brewers were doing their brew thing and the brewery sounds took over. This is Take 2! And we had such a great conversation that we decided to keep talking past the usual stopping spot and we've got TWO episodes!  We so appreciate D9 allowing us to use their space to record! Go check them out; they've got excellent brews!  In this episode, Esther talks about growing up with a love of music. She and her sister sang and played together, she performed at church, she plays a variety of instruments (but mostly piano with the band), and she attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of the Arts, known as the "Fame" High School in New York City. She even admitted to having danced on tables in the lunchroom. She shared about her many influences--mostly amazingly talented women who sing and play piano--and she talked about some of the great concerts she's attended. She also talked about the band's sound and about their creative process.  Esther, her husband Sal, and their friend Jon Strickland are the constant 3. The Alcamos met Jon when they moved from NY to Cornelius and their kids played together. You'll love hearing about the fantastic dynamic of a husband and wife plus a friend who create together, travel to gigs together, play together, and hang out as friends together. The band also works with drummers Elliott and Mike. They play mostly around the Lake Norman area, but you can also book them for private events.  Check out this episode, and then go find Esther and the Exiles at one of the many cool venues they play at and listen to some awesome live, local music. And then...wait for it. Episode 2 will follow in a week! Camille Thurman grew up in Queens, New York, and developed her love for music at an early age, practising flute, piano and vocals. As a teen, Camille was accepted to Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts, where she first picked up the tenor saxophone at age 15.Although some of Camille’s experiences in her final years at high school almost drove her away from a career in music, through the support and mentorship of experienced musicians, she found her way back to jazz. In her short-but-prolific career, Camille has received numerous awards, played alongside some of the world’s greatest active jazz musicians, and recorded four full-length albums as a band leader, including her 2018 release, Waiting for the Sunrise, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Albums Chart. In 2018, Camille was also invited to join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for two seasons as a saxophonist, and is the first woman in 30 years to tour and perform full time with the world-renowned ensemble. Until the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, when not touring with jazz at Lincoln Center, Camille could usually be found on the road leading her own band, The Camille Thurman Quartet.Camille and I caught up via Zoom in December to discuss her earliest influences in music, her experiences at high school - including the gender-based bullying she endured in her later years there and how this contributed to a loss of confidence in her musical ability - the value of mentorship in the development of a young artist, her experience touring with Jazz at Lincoln Center, and some reflection on how integral representation and community outreach are in bringing more women to jazz, and in restoring jazz to black communities.https://www.camillethurmanmusic.com/https://music.apple.com/au/artist/camille-thurman/514867580 https://www.facebook.com/CamilleThurmanMusic/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCESDy03qieJ44FiWxVz4CLg The Haven Hang Playlist on YouTube: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaOa12r61_SBKOB--RkVFJrobzGwkH6jtSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/womeninjazz)

A CEO’s Virtual Mentor Episode 19 Redefining Leadership in a Traditional Industry with Mary Powell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Green Mountain Power Corporation Welcome to Episode 19. I am joined by Mary Powell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Green Mountain Power in Vermont.  This Episode 19 presents a unique CEO profile in Mary Powell.  Many of the CEO’s that we have featured in the past have come from science, technology and engineering disciplines or law or finance backgrounds.  Mary was raised in an artistic household on New York’s Upper West Side.  Her father was a hardworking, constantly auditioning New York actor.  Mary attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts made widely famous by the 1980 dramatic film Fame based on student life at the School of Performing Arts. Mary studied art with a particular passion for charcoal drawing with its kinetic form of big, bold, and fast movement.  She was graduated with a degree in Liberal Arts from Keene State College in New Hampshire.  Her career experience prior to Green Mountain Power included a breath of variety – for a large fund manager specializing in money markets, for state government, and in banking. Through our conversation it will become very apparent how Mary’s creative and liberal arts background and variety of experience renders her as a uniquely effective leader in a utility industry that most often abides by tradition. I’d like to express our special thanks to the clients of Lyceum Leadership Consulting that enable us to bring you this podcast.  Thanks for listening.  We can’t improve without your feedback – write us through our website www.LeadershipLyceum.com and subscribe wherever you listen to your podcasts.  See you next time.   Informative and Helpful Links An April 3rd 2013 article on architecture website Arch Daily entitled “Can Architecture Make Us More Creative?” by Jonathan C. Molloy posed an interesting lead in question: “What do MIT’s Building 20, the Ancient Greek Agora, 18th Century British teahouses, and early 20th century Parisian cafés have in common?”  “They were some of the most creative spaces in the world.” Goes the answer.   The Green Mountain Power INSPiRE SPACE. Power’s 2016 electric utility residential customer satisfaction study. Mary has served as president and chief executive officer for GMP since 2008.  She initiated and implemented a strategic and comprehensive restructuring of the company that dramatically transformed GMP, and she has been the backbone of a cultural transformation and service quality improvement.  Fast, fun, and effective is her motto.  Under Mary’s leadership, GMP became the first utility in the world to become a member of B Corp, showing a commitment to use energy as a force for good. Mary has delivered on an ambitious energy vision to provide low-carbon, low-cost and highly reliable power to Vermonters.  As a result, GMP became the first utility to offer to help customers go off-grid, built Vermont’s largest wind farm, made Rutland, Vermont, the Solar Generation Capital of New England, and installed smart grid technology across GMP’s service territory. In 2012, Mary led the acquisition of Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS), with a promise to generate $144 million in savings for customers.  GMP has grown from serving 88,000 customers in 2008 to serving over 260,000 customers, with revenues of more than $640 million and $2 billion in assets. And in 2015, Mary led another partnership with Tesla, with GMP becoming the first utility anywhere to offer customers the Tesla Powerwall battery. In 2014, Mary was recognized by Powergen as the Woman of the Year, in 2015 The Burlington Free Press named her Vermonter of the Year, in 2016 Fast Company named Mary one of the 100 most creative people in business, and in 2017, Mary was named one of the top 25 Most Influential Women of the Mid-Market by CEO Connection.    Your host Thomas B.
