Calling all witches! This week on GMTD, we are wrapping up the iconic Halloweentown franchise with Return to Halloweentown! And here to help us, as is tradition, are Maggie Smith and Kyle Mantegna of the Roommate Lovers podcast! This movie has a lot going on, but the most notable (and questionable) thing is that Marnie, our main character, is RE-CAST! Halloweentown without Kimberly J. Brown feels downright disrespectful (though we do love Ms. Sara Paxton). Not to worry though, there's plenty of things to make up for it. Like, no magic being allowed at a Witch University, (Ok?? What's the point???), time travel, witches phoning each other through soup pots and washing machines, an ancient prophecy, a new crush on an old enemy, and a really, really bad witch's broom. Katelyn couldn't be here this week (she's experiencing deep FOMO) but she can attest that this episode is a goodie! Have funnnnn!

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Oddly this episode was supposed to be about the 2009 remake of The Last House on the Left, directed by Dennis Iliadis. However, the topic switches to the notorious original 1972 movie as well where we compare, contrast, and discuss both films and their place in genre film history. The original, starring David Hess and produced by Friday the 13th's creator Sean Cunningham and written and directed by Wes Craven, with its famous catch phrase It's Only a Movie, shocked audiences everywhere. Raw and rough, in comparison the 2009 remake featuring Sara Paxton is well made and in some quarters (specifically Stephen King) considered a masterpiece. Dark Discussions talks about the original's, and in some ways heavy handed, message disguised in grindhouse. We discuss Stephen King's opinion which he wrote about in a Fangoria magazine article, how the original jumped started Wes Craven and Sean Cunningham's career, why the remake is such a well received film despite its subject matter, and compare other classic genre films to the original and why the 1972 film is not considered in the same category as its contemporaries. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. What would you do for easy money? Fifty dollars to drink a shot of tequila quicker than your friend? Three hundred dollars to break the rules at a go-go club? Over four thousand to hook up with a perfect ten? What about $250,000? That's what the new film, Cheap Thrills, ponders as two friends meet up with a wealthy couple that seems like they are still living the frat and sorority life. Craig, highly educated yet recently unemployed, is about to be evicted from his apartment. With a wife and young child, he feels the crunch of the awful economy and is worried that days from now he'll land up on the street. On a chance encounter at a dive bar, he meets Vince, an old high school friend, while drinking away his sorrows. Suddenly a flashy and wealthy couple invite the two over where they begin playing drinking games for free money. Soon however the four enter into a strange and not so innocent night out about town. Starring genre favorites Pat Healy and Sara Paxton as well as standouts Ethan Embry and David Koechner, the film is one scary and bizarre thriller. Intentionally or not, the film asks questions about human motivation, faithfulness to friend and family, the class system, grading one's dignity with both desire and desperation, as well as today's economics; the wealthy one percent and the rest of us. Co-written by Trent Haaga, and directed by screenwriter E.L. Katz, the film won numerous awards on the festival circuit with grand praise from critics. Dark Discussions discusses this new film and whether it is one of the year's early favorites for top genre flick of the year.
