Ep. 42 - Thanksgiving: Colonization to Liberation

Bourbon 'n BrownTown

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 28, 2019 64:30

Thanksgiving is a colonized holiday based on genocide, white supremacy, and cultural domination in multiple forms. Still, with competing narratives and histories even in 2019, it’s the second biggest holiday in America and the start of the so-called “holiday season.” With that, BrownTown reflects on what they were taught in school, considers how they have celebrated in their own homes, and unpacks the holiday on a macro-level.BrownTown starts by discussing Thanksgiving in conjunction with Columbus’ Day, now recognized by some states/institutions and (more importantly) many people as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. They quickly make the broader argument that traditional settler colonization, though very much alive and well, is even more insidious--manifesting in culture, language, art, etc. With Chicago at the center, BrownTown discusses the Laquan McDonald action on the Magnificent Mile in conjunction with the Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Day Parade as an interrelated anecdote to break down the intersection of capitalism, white supremacy, and the organized resistance to abolish it. Zooming back in to the holiday itself, they self-analyze how to engage (or not) in ceremonial practices with loved ones while acknowledging and supporting the lasting contributions of indigenous peoples. Before the end, the duo covers various surrounding topics including Standing Rock, Chicago Teachers’ Union and SEIU strike, social media engagement around said holidays, and strategies (and lack there of) on having difficult conversations (David mentions the LARA (Listen, Affirm, Respond, and Ask Questions) method; Caullen sorts centrist white liberals into two camps: Nazi and not Nazi). As these centuries old ago events still plague our present, the fellas discuss how to confront, engage, and support organized resistance for future liberation. This may be as nuanced as talking to your racist uncle at the Thanksgiving dinner table to standing with native climate activists in your community. By any measure, our struggles are interconnected, intersectional.Originally recorded October 2019.--Some of the MANY Native American Organizations with whom to support:Indigenous Women RisingChi-Nations Youth CouncilLakota Law Project--CREDITS: Intro song My People Come From the Land by Frank Waln. On this episode we tackle a huge topic: the importance and power of our Indigenous languages, and the work that's being done to revitalize and promote Native languages. It was too much to fit in with just one guest, so we collected stories from throughout Indian Country, talking to Thelma Whiskers from Southern Ute, Harry Oosahwee from Cherokee Nation, Henrietta Mann from Cheyenne Nation, Amber Heywood and Archie Cantrell from Puyallup, and Tia Averett Pocknett and Sola Santos from Mashpee Wampanoag. Every one of our nations and communities has suffered language loss due to colonial policies, but despite the statistics and very real threats to our languages, there are also so many incredible stories of hope and resurgence. We hope you'll feel inspired to use your language today and every day, even in small ways. Your ancestors will hear you. UN Declaration of 2019 as "International Year of Indigenous Languages": https://en.iyil2019.org/Thank you to Siobhan (Vonnie) Brown, Sola Santos, Adeline & Wesley Greendeer, Eliana Ruzzo, and Jenn Weston from Mukayuhsak Weekuw and all of the other incredible folks we talked to whose voices didn't make it into the episode, you're amazing. This episode we’re super thrilled to have music by Sicangu Lakota rapper and composer Frank Waln! This week we are presenting audio from the Callisto Collective, which is a local collective “addressing conflict, abuse, assault and everything in between” by utilizing autonomous models of resolution, especially in closer knit communities of affinity. This workshop is called Conflict Resolution for folks who do Anti State Organizing. In this workshop, they talk about many things, including anarchist critiques of Non-Violent Communication, which is a developed process in use mostly by leftist organizers, possible tools for dealing with conflict, and also some discussions on yogurt (stay tuned…). This workshop was originally presented at the 2018 Asheville Anarchist Bookfair. If you would like to write with the Callisto Collective, you can email them at callistocollective@protonmail.com! This was an extremely interactive workshop, and to protect the anonymity of participants I had to cut a bunch of material out. This sometimes makes the audio a bit disjointed to listen to, but I hope you'll enjoy it all the same. Before the workshop tho, we want to plug certain hurricane relief efforts going on in town. As you are probably aware, the coasts of North/South Carolina and Georgia as well as many regions off the coasts are being hit right now with a quite sizeable hurricane. Appalachian Medical Solidarity is helping coordinate disaster relief efforts, running supplies inland to the coast and supporting those who are doing on the ground relief efforts. Donations of supplies can be sent to Firestorm Books at 610 Haywood Road in West Asheville. Things which are needed include: Pop top canned foods which are high in calories that people can eat cold and without utensils Wool socks Anti-fungal spray First aid supplies Any and all baby supplies Adult diapers Toilet paper Flashlights and batteries Travel size personal toiletries Hand soap Charged battery packs for cell phones and cell phone chargers Gasoline If you would like to help but cannot send supplies, you can donate to relief efforts in Asheville by going to: https://www.gofundme.com/mutual-aid-relief-supplies-nc If you are going into affected areas as a relief worker, it's very important to be networked with local efforts and to foreground the work of locals and directly affected populations. If people are interested in reading further about cultural competency in disaster work, we would suggest further reading by the Mutual Aid Disaster Network, which is available on any social media platform. You can contact Appalachian Medical Solidarity through their Facebook page, and they are coordinating efforts on behalf of those affected by hurricane flooding both on the coast and in Asheville. . … . .. Finally, we would also like to plug a phone zap on behalf of Jason Renard Walker, a Texas inmate associated with the 2016 prison strike and who contributed to the Fire Inside zine. He has been subject to an increasingly intense campaign of harassment from staff at the Telford Unit, who first issued him with a fake case for threatening a member of staff, and then sent him to lockup, preventing him from even being able to attend his own hearing for the so called case. The prison strike timeline has officially ended, but repression related to the strike is only just ramping up. For a full article on this case you can visit the full article here. . … . .. The music which we used in the intro is the instrumental version of the track “7” by Frank Waln, who is a Sicagnu Lakota rapper and hip hop artist. His work is very searchable on all streaming media platforms. . … . .. Playlist here.

Tanaya Winder is a citizen of the Duckwater Shoshone Tribe. She is also Pyramid Lake Paiute, and Southern Ute. She grew up in Ignacio, Colorado, on the Southern Ute Reservation. She describes herself as a writer, artist, manager, and oh yeah, the Director of an Upward Bound program. As a kid, Tanaya knew she would attend Stanford. She just knew it. Tanaya thought she would become a lawyer, but wanted some exposure to liberal arts while an undergraduate. She applied to other schools, and was admitted to these schools, but ultimately decided to fulfill her goal that she had for years to attend Stanford. There were some moments when the certainty was in question. After her grandfather passed away while she was in high school, she spent time working at a casino instead of attending school (though she had enough credits). She thought that she would just continue working at the casino until she realized her grandfather would want her to finish her education. When she returned to school, one of the few classes that would allow her to enroll was a creative writing class. Tanaya Winder found the writing helped her through the difficult time after her grandfather’s death. While attending Stanford, Tanaya eventually switched majors to focus on her creative side. It took time for her to overcome imposter syndrome. After enduring a friend’s suicide, she found that the creative writing continued to help her process her grief. She eventually went on to earn a Master's of Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico, all the while trying to find her voice as an artist. She did, and now she has a collection of works published in the book Words Like Love. While attending school she also began working for Upward Bound after a position opened that was too good to pass up. This is where The Hustle emerged. To pay for her tuition she also was teaching at the University of New Mexico. For a while, she was commuting between Albuquerque and Boulder. After completing her degree, the Director position opened up with Upward Bound and she was able to step into the role at Boulder. She continued her hustle; teaching at the University of New Mexico, and then added a new title to the mix: manager. Tanaya Winder met Frank Waln during a performance at the University of Colorado. They became friends and eventually, he asked her to be his manager. She also now manages Mic Jordan and Tall Paul.   Last but not least, Tanaya Winder and Frank Waln created Dream Warriors Scholarship to support Native American artists in higher education. It’s awesome to see such a talented person putting all of their energy into the world through a variety of outlets Be sure to check out Tanaya’s work, and the artists that she is supporting through her management and through the scholarship.
