EPISODE 66 - “WHEN CLASSIC FILM'S SUPPORTING ACTORS STEAL THE SHOW” - 12/16/2024 There is nothing quite like watching a film when suddenly a supporting character comes in and walks away with the film. (Think THELMA RITTER, S.Z. SAKALL, or GALE SONDERGAARD in almost every one of their films!) This week we are focusing on some of our favorite supporting charters who come in and snatch that scene right about from under the big stars. From JOANNA BARNES' Gloria Upson declaring, “It was just ghastly!” in “Auntie Mame” to the impassioned monologue about love that BEAH RICHARDS delivers to SPENCER TRACY in “Guess Who's Coming To Dinner,” we take a fun look at these powerful performances that we're still talking about today. SHOW NOTES:  Sources: The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (1997) by Roger Lewis; But Darling, I'm Your Auntie Mame!: The Amazing History of the World's Favorite Madcap Aunt (1998), by Richard Tyler Jordan; Tennessee Williams & Company: His Essential Screen Actors (2010), by John DiLeo; “Judy Holiday, Winner of Oscar, Does of Cancer,” June 8, 1965, Los Angeles Times; “Mildred Natwick, 89, Actress Who Excelled at Eccentricity,” October 26, 1994, by Peter B. This is a month of fond and not so fond farewells. In IS THIS GOODBYE, CHARLIE BROWN? from 1983, Mr. VanPelt has been transferred so Linus and Lucy have to move away! Will Charlie Brown get over the loss of his best friend? What will become of Linus's blanket? Will Charlie Brown follow through on the promise Peppermint Patty made for him to take her out to forget about his loss? Or will he leave her on the porch? In episode ten of THE CHARLIE BROWN & SNOOPY SHOW, also from 1983, in a not-so-fond farewell, Lucy kicks Linus out of the house! Lucy herself is kicked off the baseball team! Peppermint Patty's dad is out of town and she shacks up in Charlie Brown's guest shack. Snoopy doesn't want to lose the "neighborhood dog of the year" contest.  Plus, I give a report about my visit to the traveling "Snoopy & the Red Baron" exhibit at the Elmhurst History Museum in Elmhurst, Illinois. It's leaving Elmurst June 17 and going to other points unknown. More farewells! The Peanuts by Schulz short this month was "Off Key". Nobody goes anywhere in that one, I don't think. Don't forget to send in your "Random Strip of the Month" submissions! Here's that Peanuts Gang Singing 2112 by Rush link I promised. The Peanuts Gang Gangnam style. Thanks to Kevin McLeod at Incompetech.com for creative commons use of his songs "Mining by Moonlight" and "Bass Walker"? Thanks to Henry Pope for use of his "Linus & Lucy" remix. Check that out and much more of his music on Soundcloud here. It's a Podcast, Charlie Brown - show notes, social media and so much more on the website here. Atari Bytes - Hey! That's my other show! This week, the randomizer forced upon us the well known (by a certain age group) movie Goodbye Charlie! Charlie is a rat, a fink, a cad, a gross womanizer. Likely he dies in the first 3 minutes of the movie. Sort of. When Charlie comes back to life in a different body, a REALLY different body. Charlie figures out there are few ways he can take advantage of his new "situation", and that is when things get GROSS. I mean, funny gross, but still gross. We announce a contest in this episode! If you tweet about the podcast and include our twitter account in the tweet (@outerspacepod), you will be entered into a drawing to receive free stuff! If you picked any scene in Goodbye Charlie you would likely think that is a well acted, written and directed movie and you would be right. But something gets lost along the way to putting all the pieces together into a whole film. Is it the editing? Maybe too many subplots? Maybe too complex of an interweaving storyline? There’s a delicate balance to strike in making a movie and sometimes even the top talent just misses the mark.

When a chauvinist pig (Scott Baker) gets shot for harassing women, he's reincarnated as a woman (Jane Hamilton) in order to learn a lesson about life. Chuck Vincent's Cleo/Leo is a terrific look at gender relations and institutional sexism.

This is my latest podcast and it's called favourites, as it is the first full mix of nothing but my favourite dance tracks that I have discovered since I started DJ-ing over 2 years ago. These tracks are some of my favourites I love to throw into a set from time to time and some are just played on repeat in my home, but they collectively give listeners a window into my musical soul, and the types of music that really push my buttons. This mix includes tracks by Celine Dion, Adele, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Plumb, Delta Goodrem, Brandy plus lots more and what I think is one of the most stunning Whitney Houston remixes ever.. As a bonus track, I have also included my brand new mashup of Dreams by Deep Dish Feat Stevie Nicks and Hold Me on The Dancefloor by new UK girl band Goodbye Charlie Enjoy this very personal mix and I hope you enjoy all my Favourites.
