What happens when someone who doesn't identify as a "math person" joins a mathematics education organization? In our milestone 101st episode, Nick Love, CPM's Director of Strategic Communications, shares candid insights about navigating this territory that reveal powerful lessons about creating inclusive learning environments. After spending years in school communications without being a classroom teacher, Nick found himself surrounded by mathematics education experts—an experience he describes as both inspiring and occasionally intimidating. "It's a little bit like hanging out with giants sometimes," he admits. His stories highlight what happens when we create spaces where everyone feels welcome to engage with mathematics, regardless of their background or comfort level.Nick recounts a pivotal professional learning experience where a skilled facilitator simply asked, "What do you need to be successful in this session?" This question transformed his participation from anxiety to meaningful engagement. Rather than being tokenized, he was genuinely included in ways that honored his perspective while stretching his mathematical thinking appropriately. The experience shifted from "I don't belong here" to "I'm in with this group"—a transformation that mirrors what we hope all learners experience in mathematics classrooms. We also explore what Nick calls "the art of the nudge"—a communication approach recognizing that when people don't respond to requests, it's usually because they're overwhelmed with competing priorities rather than disinterest. This gentle persistence creates connection rather than frustration, a valuable perspective for educators working with busy students and colleagues alike. As we launch into our fifth season of the podcast, this conversation reminds us why our mission matters: creating conditions where everyone can engage meaningfully with mathematics expands possibilities for learning and belonging. In the penultimate episode of the season, Neil sits down with friend and colleague Kat Flint-Nicol to think through British cinema. The aim was to focus on regionality, but the conversation is much-more wide ranging than that. It captures the complex intersectionality of place, class, genre, industry gatekeeping, and the relationship between industry and culture. Films, places and texts discussed in this discursive chat include Rochester and Dickens, and David Lean's Great Expectations, Terence Davies, The Commitments, Nick Love, Sexy Beast and the crime cinema that followed it, Muscle and Hyena, Guy Ritchie, Last Orders, Ray Winstone, Rose Glass and Shane Meadows. It is fascinating conversation and hopefully provides insight into Neil and Kat's current thinking about the complexities of British Cinema historically and contemporarily. — You can listen to The Cinematologists for free wherever you listen to podcasts: click here to follow. The two quickly find themselves in the local underworld, and when the other Lords join them on the Costa del Sol, the crime family recognizes the opportunity: in the sunny south, they scent a whole new lucrative business that promises a golden future. Pulsating 80s soundtrack The eight-part Sky Original series is a mix of crime thriller and family saga, accompanied by a pulsating 80s soundtrack. Nick Love is creator and head writer of A TOWN CALLED MALICE. The film was directed by Jamie Donoughue. The English Trainspotting. I've decided to include movies in "Gone But Forgotten" where I focus on something either denied classic status on release or ignored today or both in the case of this Nick Love adaption of epic writer, John Kings novel about football hooliganism. It's impeccably cast, moves like a rocket, has surprisingly great cinematography, awesome dialogue and a soundtrack that aces even Trainspotting itself. It also tells a few unknowable truths about working-class Britain.

In today's episode I talk to the well known British actor and writer Eddie Webber. Eddie's childhood began on the working-class streets of south east London in the 60s and 70s. His journey wasn't an easy one with many twists and turns throughout. One event that changed him forever, was being wrongly accused of a series of serious crimes, something that haunted him for a long time. His past has been colourful and interesting. From going to live in a kibbutz in Israel, to enrolling in drama school to becoming a born-again Christian and battling substance abuse on and off for years, before getting his big break in Nick Love's The Business. Since then Eddie has graced the red carpet for films such as The Firm and Rise of the Footsoldier, the ever popular TV series Eastenders and other popular series and films of modern times. He has worked with some of the most well known film directors and actors throughout his career. He has written two books one being his autobiography called Hi Diddle Dee Dee and a book on meditation. He is a passionate advocate of Sri Ramana Maharshi's teachings and it's this way of a contemplative life that has led him to embrace a life of spiritual awareness and gain peace. Eddie talks with deep rawness and refreshing honesty about the intricacy of the human soul and his turmoil, enlightenment and rise to be a huge success, despite the battles in attaining equilibrium. An incredible story that is revealing and yet touching in many ways, showing how courage and strength elevates even the most difficult of destines.

From the patient to the provider to the payer, healthcare is a busy operating system that everyone plays an important role in. Reflecting on his journey in healthcare and the current operating system is Nick Love, a Benefit Strategist with Brinson Benefits. Host of Highway to Health host David Kemp sat down with Love to talk about his journey.Love admittedly became interested in healthcare from an entrepreneurial and financial aspect, but over the years this has changed. “I've experienced healthcare in my personal life and…just how difficult it is navigating the system…that's what I can help with and help people do…that's what's kept me in, is the ability to help people, to advocate for other people and show them better ways to be consumers and buyers of healthcare and healthcare services, really,” said Love.Getting better is usually the #1 priority when you're sick, and having someone to guide you through the process and advocate on your behalf is key. Love said, “That's the foundation of our firm, really is to be advocates for other people. Whether you're an employer, the buyer of healthcare for your people or you're the end user.”Healthcare should not be a confusing topic, but it is often an overly difficult and increasingly murky system. “Why does it cost $1,500 dollars for an MRI at one facility but $350 at another? And which one's better? How do you decide? How do you know that?” reflected Love. While virtual care can bring more attention to those who need it, it can also be misused. This is where patient responsibility comes in. As patients become more aware of the system and the price, patient responsibility is shifting to advocate for more transparent healthcare transactions, or opting out of professionally monitoring their health altogether. With healthcare costs continuing to rise, it falls to the patient, and people like Love, to advocate for change.

Simon was raised in Devon, UK. “I have this amazing memory of my Dad taking me to see Raiders of The Lost Ark when I was 9 and just being blown away! I had no clue then I would end up behind a camera years later.” Studying Graphic Design at Torquay Fine Art School he discovered a love of B&W photography as well as daydreaming about movies and movie making. “So I borrowed lights and a Super 8 camera from the school and made my first short film with my brother as the lead and my mum as the gaffer!“ He attended the Napier Film School in Edinburgh wanting, like most, to be a director yet discovered another key role he felt instantly drawn to - cinematographer. He spent his entire grant on old Arriflex ST camera from a former BBC Cameraman and began shooting a number of music promos and shorts films with friends, learning as he went. (One short, SEX & DEATH, won a Scottish BAFTA Television Craft Award for Lighting). In 2002 he shot his first feature film THE LAST GREAT WILDERNESS for Oscar winning director, David MacKenzie. His first real break came with feature film THE SWEENEY (2012 d. Nick Love) based on the 70’s TV show. “I remember taking my parents to see it at a Multiplex in Devon and that feeling of shear pride and knowing no matter how hard this industry can be, cinematography, and the artistry that came with it was my lifelong passion.” For his first TV experience he shot one episode of DOCTOR WHO (2013 d. Vanessa Vanderpuye British born actress Vanessa Vanderpuye is a star on the rise. Before drama school and before her modelling career took off, Vanessa achieved a degree in Criminal Justice, which has set her up in a very unique way for her latest role in Sky One's Bulletproof Season Two, which airs on the 20th March. The series is created by Nick Love, Noel Clarke and Ashley Walters, with Noel and Ashley also starring in the show. Vanessa will takeover a key role from actress Lashana Lynch, who has left the series to film the new James Bond movie. She will play Arjana Pike, partner of Ashley Walter’s character Ronnie Pike. The new series sees East London cops Bishop and Pike once more tracking down hardened criminals and going undercover to inflitrate an international crime empire, but this time from London to Amsterdam and Cyprus. The ‘Groundbreaking British series’ (IndieWire) is also available now available in the US and creators Clarke and Walters hope that black American as well as British audiences will be proud that creative team behind the series is two black guys. A three part special of the show will also air later in 2020, when the drama takes them all to sunnier climes in South Africa, uncovering the underworld of Cape Town. Vanessa is also known for her roles in the multi award winning series Dreaming Whilst Black, which resulted in two nominations for Best Actress, Sky Atlantic’s comedy drama series Venus vs Mars and The Legend of Tarzan. Vanessa was diagnosed with the extremely painful condition, endometriosis, two years ago, which lead her to overhauling her diet and fitness regime in a bid to battle her symptoms. Two years post surgery, Vanessa is still dealing with the ongoing difficulties of her condition and as a result she is now gluten and diary free, eats a lot of plantain - this is her absolute favourite thing - and she drinks 2/3 litters of water a day. She also follows a healthy gym routine, all of which has really helped her manage her pain. Ten years on from its release, the gang reappraise Nick Love's 'Outlaw' - a fascist critique of the dying days of Blairism that was absolutely "cunted" by critics when it hit cinemas in 2007. With help from Nick Love and co-star Danny Dyer's audio commentary, we dissect the art of Outlaw, examine it in the context of their respective bodies of work, and give some serious thought to what it says about Blair's Britain. And, because (as reprinted in the Daily Mail!) we know the political shit-slinging keeps the punters coming, we spare some time towards the end to discuss Esquire's extensive profile of the reprehensible George Osborne.

John King will forever be recognized for his debut novel The Football Factory - an instant word-of-mouth success. Heralded as a ‘state of the nation’ novel by some reviewers, others criticized its aversion to political correctness. Football fans and the wider public made it a best-seller, with more than 250,000 copies sold in the UK to date. Filmed by director Nick Love, starring Danny Dyer and Dudley Sutton, the presence of a number of known Chelsea hooligans among the film's extras caused great excitement in the media. Join us for a fascinating conversation between Garry and John, whose interests are far and wide... football (obviously), music (of course) but also John's publishing company, London Books, which is dedicated to both today's emerging authors and the marginalized fiction of London’s forgotten working-class writing. And in the meantime, join in the discussion on the website.
With Mark Lawson. The Booker Prize-winning writer Howard Jacobson has just published Zoo Time, the tale of an author who fears the novel is dying. He explains where his fictional hero ends and he begins. Fresh from the success of his portrayal of Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody in the US TV series Homeland, British actor Damian Lewis's latest role is in Nick Love's new film version of The Sweeney, based on the TV series. Lewis plays Frank Haskins, the office boss of the notoriously violent and rule-breaking unit who 'act like criminals to catch criminals'. Damian Lewis discusses The Sweeney and his 'uniform' roles - Homeland and Band of Brothers. Scripted by rock star Nick Cave, Lawless is a new film set in Prohibition-era America and tells the story of a band of brothers who produce moonshine under their floorboards and go toe-to-toe with a new law enforcer in an increasingly violent turf war. Sarah Churchwell gives her verdict. Producer Stephen Hughes.
