As the Advent season dawns, gratitude often finds itself overshadowed by the rush of holiday checklists, gift shopping, and endless to-do lists. This Thanksgiving weekend, Patti Garibay is joined by Clayton Greene, CEO and co-founder of GoodKind, to help us reclaim a heart of gratitude that carries through all of Advent.  Clayton's journey with GoodKind began with a desire to help families anticipate Christ's arrival in a way that fosters meaningful moments and lasting memories. Together with his wife Kristen and close friends, Clayton created the Advent Blocks—a devotional tool that encourages families to savor each day of December, centering their hearts on the greatest gift: Jesus. Through GoodKind's unique products, including the GratiKube, families can practice daily gratitude in simple, profound ways that cut through the seasonal hustle.  In this conversation, Clayton and Patti delve into the Biblical roots of gratitude, exploring how the Advent season offers a perfect opportunity to reflect on God's unwavering love. Clayton shares how practicing gratitude not only builds family bonds but also brings kids and parents alike closer to a true appreciation of Christ's sacrifice and love. He offers insights on weaving gratitude into daily routines, from mealtime reflections to meaningful conversations, ensuring that the season's heart doesn't get lost in the decorations.  Clayton's tools for celebrating Advent are now available in the AHGstore, and Patti is excited to introduce AHG families to resources that nurture the soul. Tune in for ideas on keeping gratitude alive, and be inspired to celebrate a season filled with purpose, faith, and the true spirit of giving.  To purchase the GratiKube or Advent Blocks, visit the AHGstore at store.americanheritagegirls.org  Learn more about Clayton's work with GoodKind, visit goodkind.shop  Find an American Heritage Girls Troop near you, visit americanheritagegirls.org    Add even more Biblical wisdom to your parenting quiver, visit raisinggodlygirls.com

Top 5 Activities for a More Meaningful Christmas

Happy Christmas in July! It might not be the time of year where you're used to thinking about Christmas. But we think it's a great time to grab a pool floaty and your family and think through what this year's Christmas season will look like. Plus, we LOVE Christmas. And we love all of the opportunities the season gives us to redirect anticipation toward Jesus' birth. So our team compiled a list of 5 activities to make the season more meaningful, and we know that just a little bit of preparation now will reap huge rewards once Christmas rolls around. Plus, we'd love it more than anything if you'd join us this year with Advent Blocks. It's what started us on this whole journey of celebrating the GoodKind habits and holidays. And we think you'll love it! www.goodkind.shop Top 5 Activities for a More Meaningful Christmas 1. Make space to decorate.  Enjoy the lights and tree (no judgment on if it is real or artificial!) but also put something up central in the home that is about Jesus. We think Advent Blocks is just as good as a decoration as it is a family tradition.  2. Make something homemade.  Christmas crafts are the best! There are tons of options online, but we also have several suggestions for church leaders to use along with Advent Blocks! Sign up here for the local church program for crafts, games, and coloring pages for the whole church to use together!  3. Read a book together.  Repetition is key. And the Christmas story is a beautiful one to craft a family tradition around. Pick a devotional that you will plan to read together year after year.  4. Sing!  There are so many great Christmas carols, jingles, and songs to celebrate the season with. We even wrote one ourselves! 5. Give intentional gifts.  Schedule time to shop together with your kids. Schedule a time to wrap those gifts. The togetherness makes it so special. But before you do any of that, schedule a time to make your list, and make it meaningful. Last year, we even suggested cutting some people out! Trust us, being intentional about the whole gift-giving process may feel like extra work, but it is so worth it to have the confidence that goes with the intentionality! And they will feel it too!

Fellow dads, Clayton Greene, and one of our favorite "Sherpas", Arthur Tew, are here with a special bonus episode this week! Arthur is part of Sherpa Collaborative, a small business accelerator that is has been instrumental in GoodKind as you know it, and all the products we make! Arthur brings alignment and insight to everything we're about, and as he and Clayton began talking about shifts they were making in their schedules this summer, we decided to throw a mic in front of them so that we could share the conversation with you too! We hope it's encouraging and helpful, and also a fun behind-the-scenes look at what some of our daily interactions look like! Top 5 Dad Shifts For Summer Take evening walks. They're great for open-ended conversation! Don't have a plan, just take advantage of the extra sunlight, get out there, and get your wiggles out. Change the location and type of breakfast. Invite conversation and give connection in the morning. Those moments really frame the day for family intimacy. Try competitive sweating. Yes, sweating. Get outside and get some exercise. Work hard and work up a good sweat. It's fun if the kids join in, too. See if you can keep up! Take some "pool afternoons". Leave early on a week day and do a cannonball, already. It is a little bit of extra fun and is incredibly meaningful for everyone involved. Allow for late bedtimes, but don't lose adult time. If your kids are old enough, have them do their bedtime independently. As long as they stay in the room (and stay quiet) then all is well. Give the adults some time to talk and straighten up and be quiet themselves. Bonus Challenge: Try a dad camp. Take a few day (3 - 5) and make a daily schedule that looks a lot like camp. Don't over schedule. Leave space for quiet time, reading, pool, and a strict lights out. Every vacation day away from work doesn't have to be spent on the road traveling.

As we've camped out around this idea of a “sabbath community” the last few weeks, we've explored the possibility and very real struggles of what that kind of commitment to sabbath looks like for pastors. This week we're speaking with a pastor whose community is living out that practice in a variety of ways. In Ruth's conversation with pastor Rich Villodas, he speaks about the power of a community oriented around sabbath and the ideas his church members are exploring as they try to make rest available to all, and not just the privileged few.    Rich Villodas is the Brooklyn-born lead pastor of New Life Fellowship, a large, multiracial church in Elmhurst, Queens, whose congregants represent more than seventy-five countries. He is also a key speaker for Emotionally Healthy Discipleship—a movement that has touched hundreds of thousands of people. His award-winning book, The Deeply Formed Life, was released in September 2020; followed by his second book, Good and Beautiful and Kind, in July 2022. Today's conversation is an honest and vulnerable one about the challenges of leading communities in the ways of the sabbath. Ruth sits down with Christine Lee who leads a busy church in New York City. Christine shares her own journey of practicing sabbath herself and the struggles she sees to “lead a sabbath community.” She also speaks tenderly about the fear that is stirred when she considers letting things lie dormant in service to making space for her congregation to experience the sabbath.   Christine Lee is the Priest-in-Charge of St. Peter's Chelsea, an Episcopal Church in New York City. She is married to Jimmy, her husband of 19 years, and they became pandemic dog parents to their rescue puppy, Baxter. She served as Vicar of All Angels' Church before coming to St. Peter's in October 2019 with a team as part of a church revitalization effort in the Diocese of New York.    Purchase Ruth's new book! Over the next few episodes we are turning our attention from a leader's personal sabbath practice towards how they can form and shape their communities around sabbath. We'll be talking to a number of pastors and leaders about their efforts and challenges in leading others in the practice.   Today Ruth sits down with Jeanne and Jarrett Stevens. As co-pastors of a busy church in Chicago, the Stevens have been saved by rhythms of work and rest. Ruth talks with Jeanne and Jarrett about their own practices of sabbath, the ways they've tried to incorporate these rhythms in their church, and the challenges and opportunities presented in this as we emerge from COVID. They also pose the question, what would it look like as a leader to leave a legacy of sabbath keeping in their community?   Jarrett & Jeanne Stevens founded and have served as co-lead pastors of Soul City Church in Chicago, IL for the past 11 years. They have both authored several books. Jarrett wrote “The Deity Formerly Known as God,” “Four Small Words”, and his latest release, “Praying Through.” Jeanne has authored many devotionals, “Everyday Brave,” “Grit & Grace,” and “You are Enough.” She is a contributing author to “Twelve Women of the Bible” and “Real Women, Real Faith.” She has a new book released in May of 2022 called “What's Here Now?” They are both passionate about helping people wake up to the transforming love of Jesus and experience soul-level change in every area of their lives.  Purchase Ruth's new book! Today we're joined by two guests, Phaedra Blocker and Vicki Degner.   In the first half Phaedra and Ruth talk about sabbath keeping in seasons of singleness. Phaedra shares the ways in which the church can often fail to support single people in the practice, and what she does to make the day feel special and set apart. She also shares her own perspective on the notion that the sabbath is a privileged concept.   Then we hear from Vicki, who shares about her experience with sabbath during seasons of intense caregiving. Kyle and Charity are parents to three school-aged children and began carving out a sabbath practice when their kids were all very small. In this conversation they share how they reframed their posture towards the day in a season where life at home was anything but restful, how sabbath has shaped what they look for in a church and the ways in which it allows them to give their kids a different kind of presence on that day.
