What does it mean to carry a musical legacy forward—not through imitation, but through living artistry? In this powerful and intimate episode of The Piano Pod, I sit down with pianist-scholar Jarred Dunn and concert pianist Anna Górecka, daughter of the legendary Polish composer Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, to explore his emotional, historical, and deeply human world of music. We discuss the making of their new album, Górecki's World of Piano—featuring the first-ever recording of an unpublished Górecki piano work—and what it means to honor a legacy while creating something new. Along the way, we reflect on Górecki's profound impact, his voice as a composer, and the responsibility of carrying forward a family and cultural tradition through music. This conversation isn't just about music; it's about mentorship, intergenerational collaboration, identity, history, and what it truly means to be a classical musician today.
The writer Colum McCann isn't afraid to take on big subjects – and his ambition has delivered a shelf full of awards, from both sides of the Atlantic. He grew up in Dublin but moved to the United States in the mid-1980s and now lives in New York. That city is the setting for his international bestseller Let the Great World Spin, in which Philippe Petit's tightrope walk between the Twin Towers in 1974 plays a key role. He's also written a novel about both sides of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian people, from the perspectives of two fathers. He collaborated with Diane Foley, whose son James was executed by Islamic State militants, to create a memoir, American Mother, which was published last year. Most recently his novel Twist focuses on the vulnerability of the undersea cables carrying the world's internet data. Colum's music includes Gorecki, Prokofiev, Brahms and Haydn.

As we continue to consider the cultural works of the West, this is another of our Director's live conference lectures, given in 2011, just months after the death of the composer Henryk Gorecki, a Polish Catholic, who's Symphony #3 became an international hit on the popular song charts of 1993. In this work, Gorecki departs from his more avant-garde styles, and takes up a kind of minimalism, into which he injects his Faith. The recording excerpted here is with Dawn Upshaw singing.

Sara Mohr-Pietsch talks to violinist Nicola Benedetti as she prepares for her inaugural programme as Edinburgh International Festival director, becoming the first Scot to hold the position in the festival's 75-year history. Nicola discusses the challenges of balancing the festival job with life as a performer and sets out her vision for opening up music to a wider audience and deepening the culture of listening. We visit English National Opera to find out about a new staging of Henryk Gorecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, 30 years after the first commercial recording of the piece shot to fame reaching number six in the UK pop album charts. Sara talks to Russian-American conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya and director/designer Isabella Bywater about their new production of the piece and how the operatic setting changes our experience of the music. Baritone Lucia Lucas and composer Tom W Green discuss The World's Wife - a chamber opera from 2017 for string quartet and singer which uses text from the poetry collection by Carol Ann Duffy, who presents world history through the eyes of the wives and partners of the men in the history books. They talk to Sara about the use of material by historic women composers, the power of the poetry, and what it means to rework the piece with a transgender opera singer in 2023. And with stories in the media of a sector in decline, we look at what the numbers tell us about the state of classical music in the UK, with contributions from Anne Torreggiani at The Audience Agency on concert-going, Janis Susskind at Boosey and Hawkes on commissioning and audiences, and Dr Adam Whittaker at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on uptake of A-levels and grade exams.

L., Gorecki, D. C., Di Virgilio, F. Abstract: Microparticles (MPs) are ubiquitously secreted by all cells and play a fundamental role in numerous biological processes such as cell-to-cell communication, cell differentiation, inflammation, and cell energy transfer. Ligation of the P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) by extracellular ATP (eATP) is the well-known stimulus for MP release, which affects their contents in a cell-specific fashion. We investigated MP release and functional impact in mouse microglial cell lines characterized for high (N13-P2X7RHigh) or low (N13-P2X7RLow) expression of the P2X7R. Stimulation with extracellular ATP triggered a P2X7R-dependent release of a MP population enriched with naked mitochondria. Released mitochondria were taken up and incorporated into the mitochondrial network of the recipient cells in a P2X7R-dependent fashion. Other constituents of the MP cargo, e.g. NLRP3 and the P2X7R itself, were also delivered to the recipient cells. Transfer of mitochondria, NLRP3 and P2X7R increased the energy level of the recipient cells and conferred a pro-inflammatory phenotype. These data show that P2X7R-dependent exchange of MPs and mitochondria modulates energy metabolism and inflammatory responses, pointing to the P2X7R as a master regulator of intercellular organelle and MP trafficking in mouse microglia. Todd Field began his career as a jazz musician and as an actor; he has appeared in over forty films, including Kubrick's “Eyes Wide Shut” and Woody Allen's “Radio Days”. He then went on to direct two full-length award-winning films, “In the Bedroom” - about grief and revenge in a close-knit family - and “Little Children”, starring Kate Winslet. Both were nominated for multiple Oscars. This week his third feature film “Tar” opens in Britain. Cate Blanchett stars as Lydia Tar, the conductor of a major German orchestra; the film is an exploration of the darker side of the classical music world, the power of the conductor, and of abusive power more generally – it's also a celebration of some really wonderful music. In conversation with Michael Berkeley, Todd Field talks about how he started writing “Tar” by interviewing classical musicians, and particularly women working in the industry. He looks back on his “free-range” childhood in Oregon, and tells how his wife financed his ambition to become a film director by buying a truck, going round flea-markets, and starting an interior-design shop. He reveals the struggle to release his award-winning film “In the Bedroom” after Harvey Weinstein bought it and demanded more and more cuts. Field won the fight and retained the film he believed in, but it took six months and a fiendishly clever strategy invented by his friend Tom Cruise. Todd Field started out as a jazz musician in a big band, and his choices include two tracks by Sarah Vaughan, whom he met backstage at a concert in Oregon. Other choices include Mahler's Symphony No 5; Elgar's Cello Concerto; and Gorecki's second string quartet, which played constantly in his head while making “Tar”.

In this podcast, Piotr Gorecki introduces the Reichskammergericht, the new central court created in 1495 by emperor Maximilian I, and the so-called “reception of Roman law” in the Holy Roman Empire.
This podcast focuses on the Holy Roman Empire and its laws. It provides an overview of the sources of law and presents four phenomena that can be attributed to the law in this area. It also distinguishes the position of the king and the emperor from the other contemporary European kingdoms.
In this podcast, Piotr Gorecki explains that law in medieval Eastern and Central Europe was mainly customary. He analyses the origin of the word “custom”, how it was used at the time, and the concept of “Ius Teutonicum”.

Episode 13 features an incredible interview with Glen Soderholm. Glen is the pastor of Two Rivers Church in Guelph, Ontario. Two Rivers began as a single house church of what he calls “a collection of strays, orphans, and exiles,” born from the idea of actually being neighbours with the people you live close to. He had so much to share about the Spiritual life, including his theology of Spirituality and the very practical things he does.As an accomplished musician, Glen spoke about the role of music in the Spiritual life and shared his love for some musicians that you may not have heard of. There are some links below to some of them. Check them out! There is a discussion of icons, which is fascinating, and I've included in these notes images of two mentioned in the episode.Glen has an amazing way of remembering quotes. Check out the quotes section below to read some of what Glen said. Some of what we talked about:Spirituality is being included in the Triune communion of God.What it means to listen to God? How do we listen in our inner life.Being limited by a cognitive approach to spirituality.Healthy spirituality begins to integrate all the senses.Icons - what are they and how are they helpful? How prayer life and spirituality changes over time.Having a prayer binderJournalingThe power of habit regardless of how we feel, but not driven by guilt. The idea of Jesus being our great high priest. That Jesus prays for us! The Spirit intercedes for us. Two thirds of the Trinity are already praying for us!It is not about persuading God. God is pursuing us and longs for a connection with us.Memorizing Scripture, in particular PsalmsThe role of music in Spirituality (see links below!)Quotes from Glen Soderholm in the Podcast“In this day and age, the last person we expect to be our neighbour, might be our actual next door neighbour.”“Spirituality is a gift that comes to us from God. God is the initiator in the spiritual life.”"Creation is the result of the overflow of God's life of love.”"Spirituality means talking to ourselves in healthy ways."A Prayer that he uses every day...I am the beloved child of God the Father. I am the beloved friend of God the Son. I am the beloved Temple of God the Holy Spirit. I am enfolded in the Three in One.Quotes from Others"Prayer is the gift of participating through the Spirit in the Son's communion with the Father.” - James Torrence"Prayer is listening to God tell you that you are the beloved child.” - Henri Nouwen“It is you that lights my lamp, the Lord, my God, lights my darkness.” - Psalm 18:28“Prayer is not overcoming God's reluctance. It is laying hold of God's willingness.” - Julian of Norwich“The energy of reconciliation is the dynamo at the center of the universe “ - Eugene PetersonMusic RecommendationsPalestrina (listen to Palestrina's Motets for 5 voices on YouTube)Bach (listen to Bach's Magnificat on Youtube)John Tavener (listen to Tavener's Fragments of a Prayer on YouTube)Henryk Gorecki (listen to Gorecki's Totus Tuus on Youtube)Arvo Part (listen to Arvo Part's Magnificat on Youtube)Bifrost Arts - https://bifrostartsmusic.bandcamp.com/ This is a public episode. "Life can only be remembered backwards, but it must be lived forwards." The central piece provides the title for this mix: Solace - "Comfort in sorrow, misfortune. Consolation." This Fovea Hex track literally breathes consolation in every single note, so it seemed a good starting point for this mix. It is also one of the few tracks in the mix that are included in its full length. Even though there are quite some dark moments in this mix, I hope it may bring some 'solace' - if needed. (If not needed: even better...! It still can be nice to feel a bit melancholic for a while, can't it?) --- originally published on Ambientblog --- Playlist start time - sample length - Artist - TitleAlbum Title, Year, Label Details 00:00 01:02 Radiohead - DaydreamingA Moon Shaped Pool, 2016, XL Recordings XLDA79000:22 02:32 Ryuichi Sakamoto - The Revenant Main ThemeThe Revenant Soundtrack, 2016, Milan 399 758-201:20 03:52 Northaunt - Extinction EventIstid I-II, 2015, Cyclic Law 72nd Cycle03:24 00:44 Radiohead - DaydreamingA Moon Shaped Pool, 2016, XL Recordings XLDA79003:58 03:01 Daniel W.J.
