As we continue to consider the cultural works of the West, this is another of our Director's live conference lectures, given in 2011, just months after the death of the composer Henryk Gorecki, a Polish Catholic, who's Symphony #3 became an international hit on the popular song charts of 1993. In this work, Gorecki departs from his more avant-garde styles, and takes up a kind of minimalism, into which he injects his Faith. The recording excerpted here is with Dawn Upshaw singing.

Sara Mohr-Pietsch talks to violinist Nicola Benedetti as she prepares for her inaugural programme as Edinburgh International Festival director, becoming the first Scot to hold the position in the festival's 75-year history. Nicola discusses the challenges of balancing the festival job with life as a performer and sets out her vision for opening up music to a wider audience and deepening the culture of listening. We visit English National Opera to find out about a new staging of Henryk Gorecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, 30 years after the first commercial recording of the piece shot to fame reaching number six in the UK pop album charts. Sara talks to Russian-American conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya and director/designer Isabella Bywater about their new production of the piece and how the operatic setting changes our experience of the music. Baritone Lucia Lucas and composer Tom W Green discuss The World's Wife - a chamber opera from 2017 for string quartet and singer which uses text from the poetry collection by Carol Ann Duffy, who presents world history through the eyes of the wives and partners of the men in the history books. They talk to Sara about the use of material by historic women composers, the power of the poetry, and what it means to rework the piece with a transgender opera singer in 2023. And with stories in the media of a sector in decline, we look at what the numbers tell us about the state of classical music in the UK, with contributions from Anne Torreggiani at The Audience Agency on concert-going, Janis Susskind at Boosey and Hawkes on commissioning and audiences, and Dr Adam Whittaker at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on uptake of A-levels and grade exams.

Of success and sorrow: Gorecki's Third

On today’s date in 1977, the Third Symphony of the Polish composer Henryk Gorecki was performed for the first time in Royan, France, by the Southwest German Radio Orchestra. Gorecki’s Symphony has a subtitle—“Symphony of Sorrowful Songs”—and sets three texts set for solo soprano voice: a 15th century Lamentation from a Polish monastery; a prayer inscribed on the wall of a WW II prison cell at the headquarters of the Polish Gestapo; and a sad Polish folk song. Fifteen years after its 1977 premiere, a recording of Gorecki’s symphony featuring the American soprano Dawn Upshaw and conductor David Zinman received some airplay on a British radio station and quickly soared to the top of the pop charts in the U.K. Radio stations in the U.S. started playing it as well, with the same effect. Was it a sign of an international religious revival? A delayed reaction to the collapse of Communism in Europe? Even Gorecki himself was perplexed: “Perhaps people find something they need in this piece of music,” he wrote. “Somehow I hit the right note—something, somewhere that had been lost to them. I feel they instinctively knew what they needed.”

Henryk Gorecki's 3rd Symphony, often referred to as the Symphony of Sorrow, is one of the most popular pieces of classical music ever composed and with good reason. Sonically dense, and often brutally minimalist in construction. In other words a perfect fit for saxophonist Colin Stetson's frequently off-kilter sensibilities.WIth little help from friends like Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire) and Greg Fox (Liturgy), Stetson has crafted a work that is as reverent of the original as it is audacious. Colin Stetson's Sorrow is music for grown ups that challenges, moves, and satisfies in the way few pieces canJoin us along with our friends Chad Clark (Beauty Pill) and Louis Weeks as we dive deep into this stirring modern classic from one of the most versatile and innovative artists working today. Man time flies!  Where did January go?  And February too for that matter?  You'll have to pardon the delay.  That what happens when I try to work on three podcasts, SXSW research, and a couple other things that I will tell you about next time.  Anyway, I've put together a really great selection today, if I do say so myself.    I eschew the high energy sounds so ofter featured on the podcast for something a bit more minimal.  The collection is pretty diverse.  There's some prepared piano, some classic minimalism, some straight classical, some jazz, even some stuff from tribal Burundi.  Like I said, diverse.  And also, really good.  I'm excited for you to hear it. On the SXSW tip, for a seventh year in a row I will listen to every artists performing at SXSW.  Just like last year, I am forgoing the Unofficial SXSW Torrent I used for the first five years and instead, I have created genre specific playlists on Spotify including every artist performing at SXSW this year.  (I'll tell you all about the really slick method for making those later) As more artists get added to the lineup, I will add them to the playlists.  There are approximately 1600 artists on there so far.  As I listen to them, I am generating playlist of my picks.  I've gone through about 1000 so far and let me tell you, it is gonna be a good year!  You can find all of that by following ActiveListener on Spotify. Oh and yeah yeah, I realize now that the Ludovico Einaudi album Divenire came out in 2007, not last year.  I only first heard it last year thought so I'm standing by my statement that it was my album of the year okay?! Links Nils Frahm - Says (Live on KEXP) The Roots - You Got Me Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists. JG Thirlwell came out of the early ’80s New York underground scene and, under multiple pseudonyms that all had the word “foetus” in them, made lots of intense albums that evoke what AllMusicGuide has called “a harrowing netherworld of death, lust, disease and decay.” You can hear the Foetus influence in bands like Nine Inch Nails and Ministry. Over the years, Thirlwell broadened his musical scope to the point where he is now an acclaimed new music composer, as well writing scores for film and television, and developing site-specific audio installations. And he’s kept his hand in rock music, collaborating with a wide range of rock musicians, from the Melvins to Zola Jesus to Sonic Youth. He’s composed pieces for various renowned new music ensembles, including the Kronos Quartet. One could argue that the chart-topping, prize-winning, multiple Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet is the most famous string quartet in the entire history of string quartets. Over their 42-year existence, they’ve exposed many different kinds of audiences to many kinds of music by breaking down, or at least ignoring, barriers between genres. They’ve played art-tango with Astor Piazzolla, backed up Tom Waits, David Bowie, Paul McCartney and Björk, and covered Bob Dylan, Ornette Colemanand Sigur Rós. But most importantly, Kronos has been a major player in nurturing the contemporary repertoire, working closely with iconic composers such as Steve Reich, Arvo Pärt, Terry Riley, Laurie Anderson, Henryk Gorecki, Osvaldo Golijov and Philip Glass. And lately, they’ve also begun collaborating with — and commissioning pieces by — a wide variety of younger musicians: Bryce Dessner (the National), Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Amon Tobin, Glenn Kotche (Wilco) and Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), among many others. Kronos has commissioned and performed two pieces by JG Thirlwell: “Eremikophobia” and “Nomatophobis,” with a third piece on the way. So we put together these two thoughtful and visionary musicians for a Talkhouse Music Podcast.
