Discover how Brendan Daisley is on a mission to save the honey bees by using probiotics! Learn how he aims to address microbial imbalances in bees to promote ecosystem health and sustainable agriculture. Join Brendan and Rupesh on this Two Nobodys Podcast episode as they discuss this critical research! Keywords: probiotics honey bees, saving the honey bees, probiotics, bee gut health, Brendan Daisley -- Dr. Brendan Daisley is a distinguished Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Guelph and serves as the current SFA Vice President of the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP). He earned his PhD in Microbiology & Immunology from Western University in 2021, where he was honored with several prestigious awards, including the Armand Frappier Outstanding Student Award from The Canadian Society of Microbiologists. Brendan has a broad range of experience in environmental application of probiotics to honey bees and, notably, he was the first to introduce the theory of ‘missing microbes' within the field of honey bee microbiome research. During his doctoral work, he coordinated several large field trials across North America (including Ontario and California) showing that supplementation of probiotic lactobacilli strains to honey bees could improve colony-level health outcomes. During his postdoc, he has since developed a microbiome database tool (BEExact) for improved detection of uncultivated ‘microbial dark matter' using Illumina next-generation sequencing technologies, established a bioreactor model of the honey bee gut microbiome (the RoBEEgut), and co-founded the Canadian Bee Gut Project (https://beegutproject.uoguelph.ca) – a nationwide crowdsourcing initiative that aims to deeply characterize thousands of bee microbiome samples to increase our knowledge on the multifactorial drivers of honey bee mortality. Ultimately, his research goals are to improve beekeeping practices through the management of both beneficial and pathogenic microorganisms associated with honey bees. Ultimately, Brendan's research is dedicated to improving the health and survival of bee populations as well as development of microbial management techniques in agroecosystems. His contributions are paving the way for innovative solutions in the field of microbiome research and environmental sustainability.

Dr. Emma Allen-Vercoe is back for a second episode and we chat about the influence of probiotics and antibiotics on the gut microbiome. Could there be missing microbes contributing to food intolerances? And why researching the microbiomes of honey bees is helping our understanding of their survivability and social behaviors. Dr. Emma Allen-Vercoe obtained her BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry from the University of London, and her PhD in Molecular Microbiology through an industrial partnership with Public Health England. Emma started her faculty career at the University of Calgary in 2005, with a Fellow-to-Faculty transition award through CAG/AstraZeneca and CIHR, to study the normal microbes of the human gut. In particular, she was among the few that focused on trying to culture these ‘unculturable' microbes in order to better understand their biology. To do this, she developed a model gut system - the Robogut - to emulate the conditions of the human gut and allow communities of microbes to grow together, as they do naturally. Emma moved her lab to the University of Guelph in late 2007, and has been a recipient of several Canadian Foundation for Innovation Awards that have allowed her to develop her specialist anaerobic fermentation laboratory further. This has been boosted by the award of a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Human Gut Microbiome Function and Host Interactions. Emma's research focuses are very broad, although they are all united under the banner of microbial culture and the microbiome. She has current projects focused on the human gut microbiome, on colorectal cancer, diabetes, xenobiotic metabolism, and 'missing microbes'. More recently Emma has entered the fascinating realm of the insect gut microbiome - specifically the microbes that colonize bees!

Chet Galaska discusses everything you need to know about diabetes from the perspective of those who have it. It's not as well understood by the general public as you'd think and this can lead to stigmas being placed on those who have the disease. -- Chet Galaska graduated from the University of Hartford with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. After working in several industrial operations, he co-founded and was president of a company that produces stainless steel castings for heavy industry. He has had type 1 diabetes since 1981 and has managed it well. Because of this he was asked to participate in a long term study by the Joslin Diabetes Center at Harvard University. Chet isn't a health care professional. He is simply a person who understands diabetes and sees the disease from the perspective of those who have it. It became clear to him that messaging about the disease underlies misperceptions that have damaging consequences. This is a huge problem in the world of diabetes that doesn't get recognized, let alone addressed. He realized that people need to know the facts if we're to motivate diabetics to do the hard things the disease demands. As a first step, he wrote The Diabetes Book: What Everyone Should Know and spoke to many groups about it. He then developed the Challenge Diabetes Program which was presented in participation with college, medical, civic, business, church and other organizations. In recognition of this work he was presented the Heroes Walking Among Us Award by the Massachusetts Foot and Ankle Society. These are doctors who deal first-hand with the consequences of diabetes ignorance. His purpose is to create an informed and supportive social environment that respects diabetics who fight the beast and encourages those who don't to take it seriously. He appears on podcasts to reach as many people as possible.
