Evan Antin, DVM, is Instagram's most-followed veterinarian with over 1.3 million followers. Antin went viral after being featured in People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive issue in 2014, and again in 2016 and 2017. Dubbed the “sexiest veterinarian,” he took the internet by storm. In February 2019, Antin's new television show, Evan Goes Wild, premiered on Animal Planet. In the show, viewers watch him chase his wildlife bucket list as he swims alongside humpback whales in Tahiti, explores caves with bats in the Philippines, and tangles with crocodiles in the Yucatan. Antin brings his passion and love for all wildlife to each adventure where, as a practicing veterinarian, he also lends a helping hand to animals in need along the way.  His summer 2020 Facebook TV show Tusks To Tails with Seeker (under Group Nine) is dedicated to educating viewers about some of our planet's most unique animals and what wild adaptations they have to contribute to their success. Seeker's digital platform is all about bringing accurate, modern science to followers, subscribers, and viewers, and this show is no exception, delivering fascinating, fun, wild information while incorporating a variety of Antin's experience with wildlife so far in his professional career.  In 2018 he debuted Happy Pet, his pet wellness brand that is available online. The products use natural and eco-friendly ingredients and are available in 3 categories—clean, fresh, and active. He will be launching his first book, World Wild Vet, in October 2020 with his publisher Henry Holt (under Macmillan). This book covers Antin's life from young wildlife/animal super enthusiast, all the way to his veterinary and wildlife conservation work around the world. He originally hails from Kansas City, Kansas, where he spent the majority of his childhood in search of native wildlife, including snakes, turtles, and insects. He went on to study evolutionary and ecological biology at the University of Colorado at Boulder and spent multiple semesters abroad in Australia and Tanzania to learn more about their respective ecosystems and fauna.  In addition to his love for cats and dogs, Antin's passions lie in exotic animal medicine and interacting with exotic animals in their native habitats around the world. For more than a decade he worked with wildlife in locations such as Central America, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Eastern and Southern Africa, Southeast Asia, and a variety of North American ecosystems

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm pretty good at recognizing a pattern. It's just been so busy that I haven't been able to write.  Yesterday I spent the entire morning with JessAnn from Group Nine and Mary Beth from the Dodo to let them capture slo-mo footage of our cats to promote Samsung's new phone camera.  Group Nine is the company that pays us for ad revenue share on our YouTube channel and The Dodo and El Dodo have been working with us every week to provide two LIVE shows for them.   Rebecca Chaiklin and Eric Goode returned with a crew on Tuesday (4/3/2018) to get pick up shots, they said, at the direction of CNN.  When they were here before (they've been filming this thing for 4 years) they wanted me to trash talk Joe Schriebvogel, but I told them I wouldn't stroke his ego by even saying his name.  They came back this week saying they just needed to film me filling in a few gaps in their script and to do some overview shots of the sanctuary.   They spent the entire day asking about Don, Jamie's father, my relationship with Don's kids, my family, and just kept trying, in about a dozen different ways to get me to say that all the lies the backyard breeders and dealers tell about me is hurting my feelings.  It doesn't.  I couldn't be any more clear about the fact that I am not defined by anything anyone says about me.  They were so Hell bent on getting me to say it that I'll be interested to see how they edit the footage to get what they want.   Interested, but not concerned.  No matter how they portray me, if the documentary airs it will only be good for the sanctuary.  Any press is good press. I told Rebecca that I can't imagine why CNN would have any interest in the tabloid trash questions they were asking.   Meanwhile...   It's Spring Break and a dozen of our people went to India with Jamie to film tigers in the wild at Ranthambore and Sariska (3/17-3/27).  That left us short handed while dealing with more guests than ever before.   I hired Mojca Mars to help with the Facebook ads for BigCatRescue.biz about 6 weeks ago and her success has meant that I have to create more ads and deal with more sales, and sales related issues.  I interviewed Andrew Swearingen, from Merkato, about handling the ads and listings for our Amazon store but he wants 7200.00 a month to do it plus an ad budget of 3k per month.  Those kind of numbers made me spend days really diving into what's happening there financially, and it's barely break even.  Here is the letter I sent him:   Dear Andrew,   After putting a pencil to this, based on my current margins, I'd have to generate more than 30,000 a month in sales (and maybe a lot more like 145k a month in sales) because the stats I used, from Manage By Stats don't calculate my actual cost of goods, in order to maintain the same mediocre profits.  Given that I'm currently only generating about $4500 per mo. via Amazon sales, I just don't think the products we offer have high enough demand, outside of our loyal fan base, to make this work.   If I were selling even 30k a month it would require staffing to ship out 6 times as many products as we currently do, and that would mean having to hire more people, which eats further into the profits.  Volunteers are great for doing cat related things, but they don't want to be in retail.   I'm sure you could grow our business, but I just don't think we could handle the kind of growth it would take, for this to make it worth all of the time, money and manpower when there is lower hanging fruit.  Our biggest driving factor to getting people to choose us for Smile, is via our social posts, mostly LIVE videos, where I tell people about it and how to do it.  I don't think ads would have as much effect on our warm audience and probably very little effect on those who don't know us yet.   I do really appreciate the time you spent and it was valuable to me to know that outsourcing will be much more costly than makes sense for us currently.  If you are ever in Tampa, I'd love to introduce you to the cats.  For now I will just keep plowing forward as best I can, and will revisit the idea of hiring you when we are more confident in our ability to make the most of it.    So, Jamie said Brittany Mira, came back from India wanting to make a difference with her life for big cats.  I sent her this:   I wonder if you would be interested in trying to grow an online sales channel for the sanctuary in exchange for some sort of commission?   I don't know if your job is full time, or if you have hours at night, to try and build up our Amazon store?   http://bigcatrescue.org/amazonstore   I believe this could be a huge revenue generator for us without being a huge drain on our staff and volunteers, IF I can figure out what sells, and then ship 100 or so at a time to Amazon for them to do the fulfillment.   I've spent the last year learning everything I can about selling on Amazon through their Seller Central University (free online videos) and through podcasts and Facebook groups.   I've just now gotten the store to about break even where it's selling about $5,000 a month.  I think it could be far more profitable, but I'm torn in so many directions, it's hard for me to focus enough time and energy on it to really make the most of the opportunity.   There are other aspects of Amazon too, that I think could generate income and make use of your photography skills.   BigCatRescue.org/shirt takes you to our tee shirts that are fulfilled by Amazon.  All we have to do is upload designs that people will buy and give them names and descriptions that would make them show up when people search.   Photos could work, especially if you have any PhotoShop skills, to add our text or make the edges look, well... edgy.   I also run a for profit store, at CatRescue.biz where I donate all of the profits to our legislative work.  There is a whole section there where people can buy and download images of our cats in different sizes, but the selection is very old and I just don't have the time for making the three size images and then uploading them, & adding all the stuff to the listing that makes it searchable and thus salable.   I can't pay you a set wage to take on these responsibilities, but if they are something you think you'd love to do, then we could talk about some sort of a commission basis that might make it feasible for all of us.  It wouldn't be enough to live on for a while; maybe not even for another year or two, but I think it could grow into something substantial.   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  These are my views and opinions. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/   I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.     You can help feed the cats at no cost to you using Amazon Smile! Visit BigCatRescue.org/Amazon-smile   You can see photos, videos and more, updated daily at BigCatRescue.org   Check out our main channel at YouTube.com/BigCatRescue   Music (if any) from Epidemic Sound (http://www.epidemicsound.com) This video is for entertainment purposes only and is my opinion.  Closing graphic with permission from https://youtu.be/F_AtgWMfwrk

Subscribe on Apple Podcasts and SpotifyHope everyone's 2022 is off to a good start. I'm kicking off a new mini-season of episodes this month that will focus on what to expect this year in digital media. To start, I spoke with Axios media reporter Sara Fischer, who has chronicled the industry for the past five years with the Axios Media Trends weekly newsletter.  As a reminder, please leave a rating and review of The Rebooting Show on Apple Podcasts. The key to sustainable media business models is having a tight relationship with your audience. That means understanding them. Audigent helps leading publishers like Penske Media and Fandom to unlock the power of their audiences with an industry-leading data activation, curation and identity platform that's supported with best-in-class tools and teams that boost business outcomes. Audigent was founded on the belief that first-party audience data is a critical asset, today and into the cookieless future. The Audigent Platform is a flexible, turnkey solution that improves business for publishers of all sizes.I've always thought of the opacity of the digital media system as more of a feature than a bug. As a reporter that means sorting out what success looks like in an industry where smoke and mirrors have long been deployed as a strategy.“The industry is going through sort of a reckoning around measuring success,” said Sara Fischer. “It's hard to quantify progress in the industry, whether it's television or digital. We just don't seem to have a ubiquitous understanding of how to measure success.”Here's what Sara expects to be major storylines in digital media in 2022. Expect more consolidation, only smaller deals2022 presented a unique M&A market for the digital media industry. With a booming stock market and ample opportunities for financing, the focus was on big corporate moves like BuzzFeed's SPAC and Vox Media's purchase of Group Nine. But the year to come will likely be less splashy as big digital media players do smaller deals.“There's going to be less talk about consolidation happening through SPACs. It's going to be more traditional and that's just because we've seen with BuzzFeed that there are some challenges to doing it that way. The SPAC market is cooled. What you're going to see more consolidation, but it's going to be private. So similar to what you saw with Vox Media, merging with Group Nine. You're also going to see more low hanging fruit continued to get scooped up. We're going to see a lot more of the Some Spider Studios getting acquired by Bustle.” The pivot from general newsTrump was very good to news publishers. Top news publishers racked up record audience gains and the obsessive attention Trump commanded from those who support and oppose him gave a boost to these publishers' subscription programs. Of course, what goes up often comes down. For Sara, that means expecting news publishers to follow the lead of The New York Times and diversify their products into lifestyle categories to expand their customer bases beyond political obsessives as people increasingly tune out a “boring” Biden presidency.“Given the absence of a very volatile news

Last year proved to be one of the most challenging years on record for the media industry with ad revenue drying up in the second quarter, but for Group Nine, it was magnified by its entry into its first full year following the merger with PopSugar. In the first few weeks of the merger, the company’s chief revenue officer Geoff Schiller came onto the Digiday Podcast to talk about the vertical sales strategy he implemented at the beginning of 2020 that required sellers to have a deep endemic focus — a strategy carried over from his time leading sales at PopSugar. This would allow sales expertise that normally fits with a brand like PopSugar — like entertainment — transfer to a brand like Thrillist, after main sponsors in the travel and restaurant industry took a big hit and pulled back from advertising in 2020. Navigating last year helped Schiller realize the horizontal focuses all of Group Nine’s titles needed to account for as advertisers’ needs shifted throughout the year. Pivoting to include the horizontal with the vertical, Group Nine’s revenue in 2020 was flat with 2019, according to Schiller, but the fourth quarter ended up being the best on record for the company.

Geoff Schiller served as chief revenue officer of PopSugar until stepping into a similar role for Group Nine, the company that acquired it late last year. And some aspects of the two companies' strategies remain much the same. The PopSugar playbook was all about its verticals: "pets, finance, food, all the way through," Schiller said on this week's episode of the Digiday Podcast. "With how that scales across Group Nine, it works even better because now you have five brands to play with," he said, referring to Thrillist, NowThis, PopSugar, Seeker and The Dodo. Group Nine's editorial emphasis on a young demographic and optimism seems to have rubbed off on Schiller as he goes about his work trying to diversify his company's revenue streams, with advertising remaining a big piece of the pie. Young readers "spend more time with us than anyone else in the entire competitive set," Schiller boasted, referring to estimates the company has made based on Comscore research. Schiller discussed how his media group is capitalizing on its name recognition to stage events and the way his company is diversifying its revenue sources beyond advertising, as well as competition between legacy media companies and young digital challengers.

We start the show with the Morning Disaster. This band wrote (and recorded) songs that were a cut above the run-of-the-mill garage band. For some reason, though, the tapes of their 1967 recording session were never released -- until Arcania International got hold of them, that is. From that legendary session we play their original tune "Urban 44."Longtime listeners know our theme and background music is "Days of s Quiet Sun" by Wilson Castle. But it's not the only version of the tune. Group Nine first recorded the song, and as you'll hear it's very different then the later Wilson Castle track. The Soul Duo take the Soul Spotlight with a cautionary tale, "This is Your Day." In this song the duo take the roles of a good woman and triflin' man. Fine mid-sixties soul.As a group, the Woo Too Country Band didn't last a year, but they managed to accumulate a large following in both Arkansas and Missouri. Their track "Only Going Up the Road" is as gritty as they come, and help explain the band's popularity.Remember, you don't need an iPod (or even an iPhone) to enjoy this podcast. They follow the Group Nine with a mellow track of sunshiny psych titled "Common Attitude."Laurie Tate steps into the Soul Spotlight with an outstanding ballad from 1965.
