Almost every home cook knows that most recipes begin with olive oil, but most can't tell you which brand or type they use, or if they even use 100% olive oil. This inspired Aishwarya Iyer, CEO and Founder of Brightland, a premium olive oil company, to launch her brand and ultimately revolutionize the olive oil industry. After innocently Googling "bad olive oil," Aishwarya stumbled across the fraudulent activities taking place in the olive oil industry. As she searched for premium 100% olive oil, Aishwarya knew it was up to her to tell the story of the farms in California producing quality olive oil. With this partnership, Aishwarya created Brightland, a premium olive oil brand sourced directly from the farmers. Choosing to start small, Aishwarya bought just 1000 bottles, which sold out within three days. In six years, she has grown the business to 8 plus figures and forever changed the way people think about olive oil. Thanks for listening! “The things that you run away from, you end up going back to as you get older.” —Aishwarya Iyer Because of our busy schedules, it's all too easy to rush through meal preparation on autopilot. But cooking with presence and awareness has profound benefits for both body and soul. With each conscious action in the kitchen, whether stirring a pot of soup or mixing a salad, we nourish our mind and spirit, as well as our physical needs. The mindfulness we cultivate over the stove can spread throughout our day, improving mood and relationships toward more conscious living. Aishwarya Iyer's passion for conscious cooking inspired her to create Brightland, where she strives to elevate people's connection to their food through products that encourage mindfulness. By sharing the stories of the farmers and flavors behind each product, she aims to help customers more present and aware during mealtimes, allowing them to reap the mental and physical benefits of living in the moment while nourishing themselves and their loved ones. In this episode, Justine and Aishwarya talked about overcoming self-doubt, the importance of surrounding oneself with knowledgeable people, Brightland's organic and regenerative products, Ash's strategic approach to growing the company, and the value of mindful cooking and making thoughtful choices to nourish both body and soul. Meet Aishwarya: Aishwarya Iyer is the founder and CEO of Brightland, an olive oil, vinegar, and honey company based in California. She launched Brightland in 2017 after becoming passionate about food and cooking oils. Under her leadership, Brightland has grown to produce a variety of high-quality, organic, and regenerative olive oils, vinegar, and honey. Brightland partners directly with small farms to source ingredients and tell the story of sustainable agriculture. Prior to founding Brightland, Aishwarya worked in the beauty industry and tech startups. She credits her experiences in consumer products and the startup world with giving her the skills to successfully launch and scale her own company. Aishwarya is committed to building Brightland through a strategic and calm approach while delighting customers. Aishwarya Iyer was living in New York, cooking often, and started thinking about where the fundamental ingredients from her pantry were actually from. She realized she had no idea what good or bad olive oil actually meant, and this led Aishwarya to start looking into a way to source and produce a better olive oil, and she moved to California to meet different farmers and continue her learning. Aishwarya was new to the world of food, but she believed that there was a real opportunity to disrupt the industry with Brightland. And then this happened.
It's a tasty episode this week as Elizabeth welcomes Aishwarya Iyer, Founder & CEO of Brightland, a modern pantry brand creating artisanal olive oils, vinegars, and honey from family run farms. She shines a light on many of the current problems in olive oil production today, and why she saw a need to change the industry with Brightland. She and Elizabeth chat about the importance of working through fear, challenging your inner critic, and the benefits of having some “phone away” days. Aishwarya also shares what's next for Brightland and some of her favorite ways to use their tasty olive oil including salads, ice cream, and of course, granola. Brightland might be the first sustainably sourced DTC olive oil company to exist, and it has achieved cult-status for its freshness, its colorful and beautifully designed bottles, and its personal touch. All of this is thanks to Brightland's founder, Aishwarya Iyer, who joins us this week to share her story, and some tips for finding your own success story. It often seems like crossing the distance between an idea and its execution is impossible, especially when you have a product in mind but no clue where to start. In this episode of Ecommerce Building Blocks, Jason wants to find out from Aishwarya Iyer how she went from corporate communications to founding Brightland, the much-heralded sustainably sourced California olive oil company. Aishwarya eschewed the typical marketing tricks used by DTC founders and chose to lean into her skill set. She focused on what she could do, and on how she could educate herself in areas where she needed to learn making every step of the production process into something personal and meaningful. Topics Discussed: -The difference between product affinity and brand affinity, and why it matters for your marketing strategy -How Aishwarya Iyer got the idea for Brightland -Her thought process in telling the story of Brightland -Why she began with PR and Communications instead of branding -How Aishwarya Iyer legitimized her product even without a background in food -Using your superpowers as your marketing compass -The preparation that went into creating Brightland's supply chain: olive education, establishing relationships with farmers, creating packaging -How packaging and shipping are intertwined, and how to prepare for common pitfalls -How to use DTC's major communication advantage when you experience delays -What makes a cult favorite? -How Brightland takes their customers on the journey with them, and why that is so valuable. -Aishwarya Iyer's if she could do it all over again advice to herself as a young entrepreneur ➡️ Building Blocks website: bbclass.co

Grace Young knew she wanted to cook from a young age. She was making Julia Child recipes at the age of 10 and as a teen and washed dishes in exchange for cooking lessons from a local instructor. Grace went on to work in test kitchens and write her own cookbooks, including two classics, The Wisdom of The Chinese Kitchen and Breath of a Wok. Before the start of the pandemic in 2020, Grace found herself in a new role, that of activist, as she started fighting for the survival of Manhattan's Chinatown. On this episode, Liz and Amanda are talking with Hitha Papelu about her multi-hyphenate endeavors as a writer, entrepreneur, speaker, CEO, mom, and more. Following a career-defining year, Hitha reflects on her greatest accomplishments and offers a transparent look at areas of growth that she plans to work on in the new year. Hitha shares about her new book and how she manages her multiple entrepreneurial roles – and motherhood! Liz, Amanda, and Hitha talk about goal-setting, morning rituals, the importance of technology breaks, and her favorite mom hacks. IN THIS EPISODE: [00:01] Hitha Papelu Introduced [02:50] Talking about her new book [04:30] Balancing career and personal life [07:57] Mixing family and work [12:17] Goal Check [17:18] How motherhood changes you [21:21] Hitha's greatest accomplishment [24:00] Thoughts on being an influencer [28:27] Hitha's signature style [32:53] What have you done for you lately? [37:49] Latest obsessions [41:29] Mom hack KEY TAKEAWAYS: How do you do it all? You don't. The only way you do it all is you don't do it all at the same time. Prioritize one to two things you could do very well and let a lot of the other stuff go. Everyone has goals. How you choose to pursue them is on you. So often women minimize their goals and dreams. Bring the people in your life – who want to support you – along on the journey as you pursue your goals. Ask for help or tell them what you want to do and let them offer help. Life is short and your style is going to change. Never stop rediscovering your style and what you want to wear. Stop diminishing art that is created by women for women, or let it be treated as less than. Not all women's stories have to be tortured or a struggle. Let's celebrate women's happiness, too. Mom hack: Ask your kids what snack they want the night before, put it on a sticky note as a reminder to you and accountability to you kids. And set the table for breakfast the night before to save yourself time. Hitha's challenge: Get offline this holiday season and figure out who you are. Reacquaint yourself with how you define yourself and how you want to be defined. Create micro rituals for your morning and start the day off doing something for yourself – like reading a book, meditation, or yoga. In Episode 128, Quinn unpacks the most delicious olive oil in the world, how it came to be, and what it means to start a food business in the age of climate change. Our guest is: Aishwarya Iyer, dreamer, doer, and eternal optimist. Ash is the founder and CEO of Brightland, the new gold standard in pantry essentials. They are proponents and advocates for authenticity and transparency in the food industry, starting with olive oil. There are something like six bajillion bottles of olive oil at your local supermarket, and that's just the extra virgin stuff. And yet, despite the options (organic, cold-pressed, etc) you'd be hard-pressed (sorry) to find pure, quality oils – ones that aren't blended, rancid, or worse. Thankfully, you don't have to cross the Atlantic (and the Mediterranean) in order to find the good stuff. It's available right here in California. Ash has been hard at work extending olive branches (you're welcome) to local family farms, getting them to buy into the mission and the message. Brightland is also branching out into sweet and sour territory with truly addictive honey and vinegar offerings. Making a difference often means shopping responsibly. It's wonderful having one more option when it comes to it. Today's episode is brought to you by Avocado Green Brands, where sustainability comes first. They craft their GOTS certified organic mattresses, pillows, and bedding with natural materials sourced from their organic farms in India, in their own clean-energy powered facility in Los Angeles, where their team shares a singular purpose: To raise the bar for what it means to be a sustainable business. Avocado is Climate Neutral Certified for net zero emissions and donates one percent of all revenue to environmental nonprofits through its membership with 1% For the Planet. https://www.avocadogreenmattress.com/?utm_medium=partner&utm_source=email&utm_campaign=INI_November (Find out what it means to sleep organic at AvocadoMattress.com). If you're playing the scarcity game and feeling that, then the person on the other side can feel it, too.”“I think we also have the luxury because we are a small team and I'm building this with a lot of intentionality and not just trying to like blitz scale it in any way, so we have capacity to be a bit more thoughtful about who we're bringing on.”“If wellness and what you're kind of ingesting can be considered beauty, then our product certainly can be."“Your website is basically your storefront, so really understand the story that you want to tell. The more personal you can tell, the greater resonance and customer loyalty you'll build.”“When you feel like you're getting overwhelmed, just take one step forward at a time rather than looking at the big picture.”“Your team is everything, and you are nothing without them and being able to recognize that and celebrate them and be able to understand. Empathy is important for everything.”
Aishwarya Iyer is the founder and CEO of Brightland, a modern olive oil company that champions authenticity in the olive oil industry and celebrates good design & California living. Aishwarya was living in New York City for years, enjoying all the restaurants the city had to offer before she started cooking at home. She started to make more meals at home but, instead of feeling better, she realized she was feeling worse, and ultimately ended up having chronic stomach issues. To her surprise, she learned that the olive oil that she was using in her cooking was the main issue, discovering that 70% of the olive oil Americans consume is either rotten, rancid, or has been adulterated. After years of research into the olive oil industry, Aishwarya decided to change the game and started Brightland in 2018 with a mission to transform the relationship we have with our food.We talk to Aishwarya about her path to finding her calling after years of feeling unfulfilled, the steps she took to build the courage to launch her business, how she overcame the inner critic that so many of us struggle with, and what it takes to disrupt an industry & launch a product with little experience. In this episode, we'll talk to Aishwarya about:* An introduction to Aishwarya, her childhood, and how it influenced her. F*ck diamonds. Olive oil is a girl's best friend! Hippocrates called it "the great healer" and Homer called it "liquid gold." There are few things in this world that are as delicious as they are healthful– hell, it's even a beauty product! But with a reputation like that, why is so much olive oil… dare we say…. utter CRAP? Enter Aishwarya Iyer. Sick of literally getting SICK from consuming bad E.V.O.O (it can happen people! Beware!), she set out to make her own with the freshest olives in California and restore the glory of liquid gold... and thus, Brightland was born. This week, we're going deep into the importance of high-quality olive oil for both your body AND pantry. And fair warning: there are a lot of delicious recipes involved. Joining me on today’s episode is Aishwarya Iyer, the founder behind the most instagrammable olive oil company you’ll ever come across, Brightland. Brightland was founded when Aish was going through an elimination diet to figure out what was causing her stomach issues, and she discovered a frightening fact that 80% of the olive oil we consume is actually rotten. I know, so gross. She decided it was time to take this insight and create her own olive oil and boy oh boy are we glad she did. In this ep we’re covering the fresh approach she took when creating the brand; wanting it to be described like wine and marketing it like a beauty brand. How partnerships have been a critical element to the brands success, and the lessons she learned along the way as a female entrepreneur. For the second episode in our series on Systems In Flux, we’re talking about systems of class and taste. In the past 10 years, new brands have emerged, specifically in luxury and premium categories, that point to a divergence in our social systems around what class and taste are, and how they are achieved.Brand strategist and sociologist Ana Andjelic places brands like Telfar, Blenheim Forge, Fly By Jing and Brightland in the Modern Aspiration Economy. This emerging economy trades in taste, aesthetic innovation, curation and environmentalism. And what’s remarkable about these brands is that they have all successfully decoupled class from money, and taste from wealth. In her new book, The Business of Aspiration, Ana explores this decoupling and contrasts the Modern Aspiration Economy to the traditional economy where consumers once signaled their status through collecting commodities, Instagram followers, airline miles, and busy back-to-back schedules. Now, it’s about collecting knowledge, belonging to micro-communities, and leveraging influence. As Ana points out, this new cultural and environmental capital changes the way businesses and entire markets operate. We talked about where and when this decoupling started, the ways in which it has changed global markets permanently, and how brands can trade in this new capital.Links to interesting things mentioned in this episode and further reading:The Business of Aspiration (Ana Andjelic):https://www.amazon.com/Business-Aspiration-Ana-Andjelic/dp/0367554402/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=ana+andjelic&qid=1603952181&sr=8-1Big Fashion’s Niche Future (The Sociology of Business):https://andjelicaaa.substack.com/p/the-end-of-big-fashion How Micro-Communities Transform Aspiration (The Sociology of Business):https://andjelicaaa.substack.com/p/what-micro-communities-mean-for-aspirationFor more brand strategy thinking: https://www.theconceptbureau.com/

Aishwarya leaves us with many great takeaways, including her belief to operate like you have time, and the importance of being brave. About Aishwarya Iyer: She is the founder + CEO of Brightland, a modern pantry essentials company based in LA that has been featured by the New York Times, Vogue, goop, Fast Company and more. In the US, more people are shopping online than ever. This stark jump in ecommerce has left a lot of industry experts asking how new ecommerce businesses can successfully launch in the midst of a pandemic, where does the ecommerce experience still falls short, and if the pandemic has permanently changed how we shop. To answer all these questions, we're talking to Dan Frommer. Dan is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of The New Consumer where he researches and writes about why and how people spend their money. We're in California with Aishwarya Iyer, who explains how she built her fast-growing olive oil brand Brightland – then over to Norway where we talk about the future of video meetings with Øyvind Reed, CEO of Whereby.
Presented by Mastercard Aishwarya Iyer was working in Silicon Valley when a bout of stomach issues led her to research olive oil companies. What she learned was alarming--nearly 70% of olive oil consumed by Americans is rotten or rancid. Instead of ditching it from her diet, she decided to disrupt the market and start her own line of olive oil instead. Say hello to Brightland, an artisanal, small-batch extra virgin olive oil label produced in California on a single-estate farm. But the secret to her success isn’t just in the sauce (or the oil, in this case), it’s also in the packaging. Her approach strays away from the typical olive oil branding and replaces it with elevated designs and powder-coated bottles that stand out amongst the competition on the shelves. In this episode of WorkParty, we sit down with Aishwarya to learn about her Instagram-worthy bottle design, why she decided to bootstrap her business, and what it takes to disrupt an industry you have no prior experience in. Tune in to learn how you can master the art of the pivot and build a successful business that challenges the status quo. Join the party on social @workparty and stay in-the-know at workparty.com. Aishwarya Iyer started Brightland, an olive oil company, in 2018 with the idea of describing the products like wine and marketing it like a beauty brand. "Beauty leads the way in terms of talking about benefits, packaging -- the shine and glimmer that beauty's able to do, food just isn't able to do that. Maybe there are some standouts!" Iyer said on the Modern Retail Podcast. What's more, many DTC beauty brands rely on less traditional revenue channels, like big box retailers. Over the last few months, large wholesale sales have gone down for Brightland -- so it's had to focus much more on digital sales and smaller retail partnerships. "Everything's kind of moving back to this quote unquote normal place, save for the larger retailers still because they still probably have inventory on hand," Iyer said. Growing in wholesale's place are digital sales, according to Iyer, as well as and inbounds from gift box companies.
for someone whose background spanned beauty and fintech, our guest today, aishwarya iyer, couldn't have picked a more different field to dip into. but after launching in june of 2018, brightland, aishwarya's modern pantry essentials company, has already made its way into more than 150 doors and graced the pages of The NY Times, Goop and Domino. cliche as it may seem, brightland's success rests on aishwarya's commitment to the brand's story and core values, which include letting the olives, which are lovingly farmed in California, speak for themselves. from working with her dream artists to creating opportunities through smart brand alignments, aishwarya shows us the value of building a business through a unique and studied perspective.more importantly, she shows us that in a digital world where businesses are clambering for a spot on our feed, there is still plenty of room for people to connect through analog means. tune in!

With Brightland, you know exactly what you’re getting - authentic olive oil that’s never rotten, over processed, or fraudulent. With absolutely no fillers or artificial preservatives. On this episode Michelle catches up with LA based CEO and Founder Aishwarya Iyer. The two discuss how Aishwarya got her start in the industry, and the important role a good olive oil can play for our bodies.
Most people don’t understand the muddy manufacturing process of olive oil. Aishwarya Iyer is changing that. She is the founder of Brightland, a new olive oil brand that’s grounded in honest, conscious production and local sourcing of olives. After working in public relations and marketing for startup and technology companies in New York, Aishwarya switched coasts and careers. Now, she makes fresh, traceable olive oils with farms she trusts in California. The hand-harvested oils are meant to make you feel alive, awake and nourished from deep within. On this episode of Well Made, Aishwarya talks about building a traceable olive oil supply chain (7:14). She reveals moments of self-doubt before taking the leap of faith into entrepreneurship (8:21). A particularly warm harvest led to a switch in olive varietals. Aishwarya talks about how sharing that openly with their customers led to one of their largest sale days (12:40). She unveils how she vets her partners (15:35) and the practicalities of launching a brand (27:17). She describes the inspirations for Brightland’s photography, color palette, and white powder-coated glass bottles (29:22). Finally, Aishwarya shares her favorite ways to use Brightland (36:52) and the lasting influence of her mother’s cooking (46:13). Also mentioned on the show Blue ocean strategy Well Made Episode 72 with Backdrop Home: Connecting with Color Brightland's Spotify Link and images can be found on the Lumi Blog.
Aishwarya Iyer shares her journey from the tech start-up world of New York City to the scenic olive mills in California to found the artisanal olive oil company Brightland. With zero experience in the food industry, launching an olive oil company was nothing the 32-year-old ever could have predicted. A few years ago she decided to begin cooking dinner at her apartment (instead of ordering take-out) and she started routinely using olive oil. Suddenly, Aish started feeling sick to her stomach after every meal. After eliminating products, she determined the culprit was the olive oil; it was dated and rancid. In this show we delve into how Aish invested everything she had and moved across country to develop a healthier, high quality oil that avoids many of the issues in the scandal-plagued industry. Plus, her tips on how to purchase fresh, tasty olive oil at the grocery store (it’s not just about the expiration date) and her surprising advice on using it at high heats (the “smoke point”).
After discovering the rotten truth about most olive oils on the market, Aishwarya Iyer was inspired to start something different. Brightland is a California-grown olive oil that brings taste to your table, both in flavor and design aesthetic. To learn more and shop Brightland’s blends, visit brightland.co. Aishwarya Iyer of Brightland—a modern olive oil company based in Los Angeles, California—is transforming the way we think about food. Despite being a first-time founder, Aishwarya is already making big strides in the slow food industry by raising the standards in production, as well as leading the charge in having transparent conversations regarding where the food we consume is coming from in the first place. In this interview, Aishwarya shared her thoughts on how slow content has been an intrinsic part of Brightland and what legacy she hopes to leave behind as a slow and sustainably-minded entrepreneur. The episode also opens with a story contributed by Jordan Soderholm of ABLE.
We met Cyber Peacekeeping Forces (CPF) at the Blockchaingers hackathon in Groningen (2018) and are now, months later, curious to learn bout their proceedings. CPF is becoming lots more then just an idea on a hackathon. As we speak their concept is being developed and they successfully applied at Brightland campus for the incubation program. Of course we want to know all about the unique concept and their ambition.
