This edition is supported by our friends at the Climate Majority Project. If you're in the UK, and have decided it's time to do something more than doomscrolling and more useful than throwing paint…on 15-16 March at Limehouse in London.Get more info and tickets here.Fires in Los Angeles at last count had $35 billion plus of insured losses and probably $300 billion plus of economic losses. Who should pay? Here to help decode that we spoke with Dave Jones - former Insurance Commissioner for California from 2011 through 2018. He's now the director of the Climate Risk Initiative at University of California, Berkeley. He recently wrote an oped in the New York Times arguing that the oil companies should have to pay for the damages of the LA wildfires, to arrest the insurance crisis.Steve Coulter of the Green Alliance here in the UK expands on, slight tension, conundrum, paradox. Steve talks about his recent briefing on this point, particularly focusing on Lloyd's of London. And, um, finally, our good friend, returning champion, Dana Drugmand, journalist, publisher of Climate in the Courts and One Earth Now, who's been helping us understand these issues in the US nearly a year now. She helps us explore the counteroffensive launched against the Empire State's 2024 Climate Superfund law by 22 Republican state attorneys general who filed suit against state of New York to challenge the law signed by Governor Kathy Hochul at the end of last year. Dana compares that to some of the other pushback to the first-of-its-kind bill that was passed and signed into law earlier last year in Vermont.06:35 Interview with Dave Jones: Background and Climate Risk08:22 Insurance Industry's Role in Climate Change10:11 Holding Fossil Fuel Companies Accountable15:03 Subrogation and Legal Actions18:12 Impact on Insurance Markets and Homeowners20:15 Financial Risks and Regulatory Responses38:39 Mitigation Measures and Legislative Actions48:06 Industry Split on Sustainable Practices49:09 Lloyd's of London: A Case Study in Poor Performance50:33 The Growing Uninsurability Crisis53:53 Government Intervention and Systemic Risks56:33 Call to Action for Policymakers59:50 New York's Climate Superfund Law and Legal Challenges01:07:34 The Broader Implications of Climate Litigation01:22:40 Conclusion and Final Thoughts Hosted on Acast. Here at Dig Me Out we spent the last ten years starting each new season by looking back at the albums from each year that stood the test of time, disappeared without a trace, and everything in between. We kicked off with a roundtable in 2015 and revisited the albums of 1995, so it made sense to start a new series of roundtables in 1995 as well. This time we're checking out the singles of each year, looking at the year-end Modern Rock/Alternative and Hot 100 charts in the US, as well as charts from Canada, the UK and Australia for comparison. Like with all roundtables, we enlisted the help of some special guests to revisit this interesting transitional year that saw the rise of the second generation of grunge bands like Bush and Silverchair, the continued success of 1994's pop-punk breakthroughs by Green Day and The Offspring, and the juggernaut that was Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette. But that doesn't tell the entire tale, so former A&R executive and audio tech writer James Barber and music writer Kevin Alexander join us to talk about all the hits, the near misses, and the weirdness that was 1995. Lastly, our third guest, S.W. Lauden aka Steve Coulter was unable to attend due to the tragic loss of his and his family's home in the Eaton, CA. fires. If you are able, please consider donating to the Go Fund Me set-up by Steve's friends. Songs In This Episode Intro - You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette (Jagged Little Pill) 12:15 - Possum Kingdom by Toadies (Marvel's Thunderbolts 2025 trailer) 24:48 - A Girl Like You by Edwyn Collins (Empire Records soundtrack) 33:18 - Bright Yellow Gun by Throwing Muses (University) 53:24 - No More I Love You's by Annie Lennox (Medusa) 1:00:23 - Common People by Pulp (Different Class) Outro - Alright by Supergrass (I Should Coco) Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. It's been a long time coming, but another horror franchise was looming large in my to do bin for episode content. I've tackled some of the modern classics, and with The Conjuring franchise in the rearview mirror, it dawns upon me to take on the other Patrick Wilson spooky multi-movie series. So Insidious o'clock, here we are.If you like hauntings and family dramas with emotional resonance, this is the franchise and episode for you. I break down the confusing, but important, chronological order you should watch these in, show you who the real MVP and main character of the franchise is, and lastly, try not to, but inevitably compare Insidious and Conjuring.Make sure to let me know what you think of this horror franchise. Hit me up on social to share if you have had any emotional resonance or tears shed watching any of these movies at @NickNackMovies or @NickNack_IC on Instagram, Tik Tok, Letterboxd or Twitter. It may surprise you which movie I cried at.
We're going back to the days when the geeks inherited the earth...specifically, the bands that were influenced by the monumental commercial and artistic triumph that was Weezer's 1994 self titled album (or, as it's affectionately known, The Blue Album). That's the subject of the new oral history and accompanying 11-track compilation album Generation Blue, out now from Big Stir Records and Spyderpop Records. Compiled and edited by this week's Third Lad, S.W. Lauden, Generation Blue is a fascinating celebration of the '90s Hollywood scene that included bands like Ozma, Nerf Herder, Baby Lemonade, Chopper One, and more. S.W. Lauden (aka Steve Coulter) was not only an active participant in the Geek Rock and Power Pop scenes, drumming for a series of LA bands like Ridel High, Tsar and The Brothers Steve, but is also accomplished writer. He is the editor of the essay collections Go All The Way: A Literary Appreciation of Power Pop and Forbidden Beat: Perspectives on Punk Drumming. His power pop-themed crime fiction novellas include That'll Be The Day: A Power Pop Heist and Good Girls Don't. He is also the author of the Greg Salem punk rock PI trilogy, starting with Bad Citizen Corporation. Find more of Steve's music writing on Substack at Remember The Lightning, including his semi-annual print/ebook Guitar Pop Journals. Generation Blue is also available as on Kindle: Generation Blue: An Oral History of The Hollywood Geek Rock Scene in the 1990s & 2000s - Kindle edition by Lauden, S.W., Koch, Karl, Fisher, Justin. This week Andrew & Ted sit down to discuss what they took away from Amazon Prime Video's original "Shotgun Wedding", starring Jennifer Lopez (Darcy Rivera) and Josh Duhamel (Tom Fowler) in this Romance / Comedy / Action movie. "Shotgun Wedding" is basically a "what can go wrong in the last 36 or so hours before Tom and Darcy tie the knot" movie. The short answer is ... apparently a lot!. Where do we start ... Darcy's old boy friend Sean (played by Lenny Kravitz) shows up, "unexpected to the bride and groom", to the rehearsal dinner via an entrance that has the table cloths blowing away, the bride (Jennifer Lopez) doesn't have cold feet about getting married, but feels the best time to discuss her displeasure about the wedding itself, planned by the groom (Josh Duhemel), is to discuss it with her husband to be as the guest are literally taking their seats ocean side for the ceremony itself. Did I forget to mention the pirates? But before I get to the pirates ... side stories ... bride's mom (played by Sónia Braga) and dad (played by Cheech Marin) are divorced, she's bitter and he's dating a woman half his age. There is however a neat little spin to that relationship (dad and younger woman) that won't be spoiled you'll have to watch and yes the bride's mom is bitter about the woman half ex-husband's age. Groom's parents (Jennifer Coolidge and Steve Coulter) seemingly have the most perfect marriage ... guess what ... they don't. Won't spoil that either. Granted the "truth" encompasses about a minute and a half of run time ... but is shockingly funny. By the way ... Jennifer Coolidge ... she brings her "A" game to her role. Okay ... the pirates. You see the wedding takes place on an island in the Philippines. Viewers are left with impression that this island and the single resort on it is a "budget" island / resort and Tom (Josh Duhamel) is seemingly constantly reminded of that at the beginning of the movie. Anyway ... the area is "known" for having pirates raiding boats and resorts and Darcy's and Tom's wedding seems like the perfect place to pick up a few "million bucks". Plot twist there ... won't spoil it for you. In the end ... there is a beautiful beach sunset and lots of music and dancing. At least for the cast and crew ... Andrew & Ted on the other hand weren't dancing after they watched it. Not to say they didn't like it ... but they found a singular reason why one might not like it. Tune in to find out what Andrew & Ted thought.

Tune in as returning guest Guy Bradford joins Arthur for a review and recap of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, the newest Marvel Cinematic Universe series to premiere on Disney+. With its sitcom format, meta comedy, and fourth-wall breaks, how did it fare at introducing viewers to Jennifer Walters, a single 30-something lawyer and cousin of Bruce Banner/The Hulk who faces new obstacles in her personal and professional life after gaining Hulk powers via cross-contamination with Bruce's blood? On top of covering all that, Arthur and Guy chat about topics like knockoff merchandise, the ridiculous burdens that VFX teams are continuing to endure, the two middle fingers that She-Hulk gives to misogyny and incels, and the surprising end to a relationship arc in the finale of Boston Legal. Created by head writer Jessica Gao and leader of the directing team Kat Coiro, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law stars Tatiana Maslany, Jameela Jamil, Ginger Gonzaga, Mark Ruffalo, Josh Segarra, Mark Linn-Baker, Tess Malis Kincaid, Tim Roth, Megan Thee Stallion, Benedict Wong, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jon Bass, Rhys Coiro, Griffin Matthews, Patti Harrison, Steve Coulter, Charlie Cox, Brandon Stanley, and Drew Matthews. Heating and cooling concerns about 1/3 of all greenhouse gas emissions. With the convergence of advanced clean energy technologies, the chance of being fossil fuel free now appears! In New York's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, more commonly known as the Climate Act, the most aggressive greenhouse gas reduction goals have been turned into law. Did you know that it not only aims to achieve 40% reduction by 2030 and 85% by 2050, but also envisions giving 35% of all benefits to communities that have been most disadvantaged by climate pollution? We have been successfully moving towards our 2025 goals, and now, through NYS Clean Heat, we can take another step forward with heat pumps! The entire world is heading down this road. Why not do it today and be ahead of the game? Anyone who gets into this program now is on the cutting edge, ahead of everyone else. With numerous incentives, this is undoubtedly what contractors (existing or new) need to grow in the geothermal space. Check this episode as we engage in a conversation with people who can help you increase your profit, lower your competition, and make a positive impact with geothermal installations! Featured Speakers: Wendy MacPherson is the Assistant Director of Clean Heating and Cooling for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Wendy leads New York State's efforts to develop markets that support renewable, high-efficiency, and clean thermal systems, including air-source, ground-source and water-source heat pumps. She is charged with conceptualizing & driving strategies to advance building electrification within New York State. Steve Coulter is the Clean Heat Program Manager at Con Edison. In coordination with the statewide New York State Clean Heat Program, Steve implements Con Edison's heat pump incentive offerings - helping utility customers save energy and money with clean heating and cooling. Steve recently worked with Con Edison's Non-Wires Solutions team where he developed customer-sided solutions to reduce electric peak demand on constrained areas of the distribution grid as alternatives to traditional utility capital projects. Prior to his work at Con Edison, Steve has been passionately engaged in a range of clean energy initiatives in previous roles at Southern California Edison and the Los Angeles Business Council Institute. Mike Seidenberg is the Owner of Eco Energy in Rochester, New York. 14 years ago, Mike left his job as a Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning technician to start his own HVAC company and specialize in geothermal heat pumps. Maggie Seidenberg is a BPI Building Analyst & Owner of Energyvana LLC. Growing up around the HVAC industry under the wing of her Dad, Maggie was never a stranger to the changing tides of energy efficiency. After intending to study Biochemistry as a possible energy source, she saw that the very root of energy efficiency lies within the user. Her goal and success is helping New York State homeowners make a lasting impact that promotes a greener future – and a greener pocket! Moderator: Ron Kamen is the CEO of EarthKind Energy Consulting in Rhinebeck, New York. For decades, he's been catalyzing exponential change in sustainable energy adoption with governments, non-profits, and businesses through his expertise in the field. Ron hosts the AWESome EarthKind podcast and helps empower people to make clean energy transitions to reduce their carbon footprint and save money. In this episode, Wendy, Steve, Mike, and Maggie join forces as they talk about the process on how a contractor can achieve greater success by becoming a Geothermal HVAC Contractor. Here, they discuss the Climate Act, the NYS Clean Heat Program Incentives, and answers questions with regards to geothermal installations and its benefit to you and the earth. Valuable Resource: Please read Section 4 of the the NYS Clean Heat Program Manual to learn about the Participating Contractor requirements and how to enroll. Visit the NYS Clean Heat Contractor Enrollment Page for more information and application documents: https://saveenergy.ny.gov/NYScleanheat/become-participating-contractor/ Call (844) 212-7823 for enrollment related inquiries. Topics Covered: 03:14 – Ron introduces himself and this web class' speakers: Wendy MacPherson, Steve Coulter, Mike Seidenberg, and Maggie Seidenberg. 08:40 – Wendy discusses New York State's climate goals. Here, she highlights the Climate Act and the NYS Clean Heat alongside the reason behind the need to focus on heating and cooling. 14:59 – Steve starts by introducing himself then proceeds to talk about the NYS Clean Heat Program Incentives, the opportunities, and the how-to's of enrollment. 26:50 – Father and daughter Mike and Maggie talk about their company and how their process keeps clients motivated in this transitioning movement towards a clean and green space. 31:24 – Maggie explains how helpful the manual is in seeing and understanding what your house actually needs. Moreover, they discuss the advantage they put forward as they help train customers into effectively knowing how to approach their own geothermal space. 36:19 – What are the certifications contractors need to plan about and have in order to be able to roll a product? Are there any upstate opportunities when you do the geothermal cycle? 39:37 – Mike shares what they do with hot water then proceeds to talk about the equipments geothermal installers need to make their practice successful. 42:40 – How long does it take for them to close a deal and finish the installation process? What is the difference between geothermal and air source heat pumps? What are the benefits? 45:36 – Are there any additional license requirements imposed by the State? What are the challenges in insurance? What are the terms of warranties? Are there maintenance contracts? 49:41 – Steve mentions the biggest incentive out there as people transition more into heat pump water heaters. Wendy talks about the best way to have that state support in trainings and the participation process a contractor needs to go through in order to apply. 54:28 – Contractors are too busy with traditional business. They cannot expand their business with this limited work force. How could this be accomplished? 56:14 – As we continue transitioning, we'll later on need to change codes. What is Wendy's take on this? 58:40 – A quick summarization of the speakers' stated points in today's web class. Valuable SuperNovas: “There is no way New York State is going to meet these decarbonization goals with the current workforce installing heat pumps at the current pace. We need public and private sectors working together to drive this significant change. We need you to install heat pumps. We need you to be a part of the electrification revolution.” – Wendy MacPherson “How do I become a successful geothermal contractor? Become a NYS Clean Heat Participating Contractor.” – Steve Coulter “It is a good environment to sell on because you're showing them that you care not only about their project but [also] their home, their comfort, everything that makes it up. It's like a full body investment in a house.” – Maggie Seidenberg “I'm pessimistic. I believe that everything is going to break someday, so it's nice to have two sources of heat, which makes the customers happy when it does break.” – Mike Seidenberg “There is nothing that is more important right now than building electrification.” – Wendy MacPherson Connect: Wendy MacPherson: wendy.macpherson@nyserda.ny.gov Steve Coulter: coulters@coned.com Mike Seidenberg: mikes@ecoenergyny.com Maggie Seidenberg: maggie@energyvanallc.com Ron Kamen: ron@earthkindenergy.com

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jeff Whalen from the Maya Hotel in Long Beach! **This interview was recorded prior to the COVID-19 pandemic** As the guiding member of the glitter punk band Tsar, Jeff Whalen was well known to connoisseurs of bubblegum-flavored power pop. The band released two records in the 2000s before the music industry chewed them up, then after some recovery time (and a brief reunion) Whalen went solo. His debut album, 2019's 10 More Rock Super Hits, was a poppier version of the already sticky-sweet sound of Tsar. Whalen first hit the music scene as the singer, guitarist, and songwriter for Tsar, a quartet from Los Angeles who formed in 1998. Along with guitarist Daniel Kern, bassist Jeff Solomon, and drummer Steve Coulter, Whalen concocted a sound that was equal parts Cheap Trick, the Monkees, and Guns N' Roses. His knack for writing bubblegum melodies, then singing them with a knowing wink as the band thundered along caught the ear of record labels, and after a bidding war the group signed with Hollywood Records. After enlisting the production skills of Grammy winner Rob Cavallo, the band delivered their self-titled debut in 2000. The album was an exciting, hook-filled modern power pop record that nobody bought, despite (or perhaps because of) the band's subsequent opening slot on a Duran Duran tour. The group released a promo-only EP in 2001 (King of the School) and then, due to label politics, nothing. They continued writing songs and recording, finally winning their release from Hollywood in 2004. After some lineup changes (Chuck Byer replaced Steve Coulter in mid-2004, Derrick Forget replaced Jeff Soloman in early 2005), Tsar released Band-Girls-Money for new label TVT in June 2005. It was a spikier, more hard rock-influenced record and it met the same fate as their first album. The band decided to take a break and it wasn't until 2010 that the original lineup got back together to play some shows and record an EP, The Dark Stuff, which was released in 2012. They also released a split 7" with the band Killola that year. It wasn't until 2018 that Whalen re-emerged as a solo artist. Working with producer Linus of Hollywood plus a small cast of musicians including the Dollyrots, Tsar drummer Steve Coulter, and Os Tyler of the Aahs, Whalen recorded a batch of songs that took Cheap Trick at their power poppiest as a guide. The recording process was crowdfunded and the resulting album, 10 More Rock Super Hits, was going to be self-released in 2018, but the Supermegabot Music Concern label stepped in and issued it in early 2019. A Caçada.
