2986: How Automation Can Propel Finance Teams Towards IPO Success

The Tech Blog Writer Podcast

In this episode of the Tech Talks Daily Podcast, we sit down with Robert Israch, President of Tipalti, to explore the critical role finance automation plays in the growth and IPO readiness of tech companies. With the UK's tech IPO market showing signs of revival, driven by potential listings like Raspberry Pi, the strategic insights and planning of finance teams are more crucial than ever. Rob shares his perspective on how excessive manual processes within finance departments can hinder growth and recovery, and how automation offers a path to efficiency and success. Rob highlights the significant burden that manual processes place on finance teams. On average, processing a single supplier invoice can take 42 minutes, a time-consuming task that stifles growth and impedes strategic financial management. Efficient finance operations are essential for companies preparing for IPOs, and Rob discusses how automation can streamline these processes to provide the necessary financial visibility and control. One of the main barriers to automation adoption is the skill gaps within finance teams, along with the challenge of selecting suitable tools and overcoming perceived complexities. Rob offers insights into how these barriers can be addressed and overcome, making the case for why finance leaders should prioritize automation. Tipalti's finance automation solutions are designed to help fast-growing tech companies streamline manual back-office processes such as accounts payable, expenses, and procurement. By automating these operations, companies can achieve a 50-80% reduction in workload, avoid the need for future hiring, improve controls and compliance, and gain better visibility into spending. Rob shares compelling customer examples to illustrate the benefits of finance automation. For instance, Spitfire Audio was able to reduce its royalty payment process from six weeks to just 30 minutes, while Schoold avoided the need to hire an additional full-time finance employee. These examples underscore the transformative impact of automation on efficiency and strategic financial management. For companies considering automation, Rob advises starting by researching options and working with vendors to evaluate fit through live demos. He emphasizes the importance of ease of implementation, user experience, and scalability in selecting the right tools. Tipalti's approach balances the breadth and depth of capabilities with simplicity, ensuring a positive customer experience and long-term fit. Built for fast-growth mid-market companies, Tipalti has a high customer retention rate, reflecting its ability to scale with its clients and support their evolving needs. Join us for this insightful episode as Robert Israch discusses how finance automation can unlock new possibilities for growth and IPO readiness. How is your organization leveraging automation to enhance its financial operations? Share your thoughts and join the conversation!

This selection is our conversation with Matty and George of The 1975, recorded back in March 2019. EPISODE NOTES John ventures up to Spitfire Audio to meet with Matty and George from The 1975 to talk about how the album 'A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships' was recorded and produced. Somewhat bleary eyed after a massive night at the Brits (scooping two awards), the boys reveal the inner workings of The 1975's production methods and writing techniques. We're treated to demo versions and extensive track breakdowns from their award winning album, showing what it takes to create a 1975 hit. We get to hear why Matty scats to write lyrics, how George uses a Barry White bass trick for creating lush vocals, and hear THE definitive explanation of side-chain compression. MARTIN PHIPPS Coming from a musical background (he is Benjamin Britten's godson), Martin read drama at Manchester University and fortunately for the acting profession, he decided to concentrate his energies on writing music. Since scoring his first TV drama, Eureka Street in 2002, he has won 2 BAFTAs, 5 Ivor Novello Awards and received multiple Emmy nominations for writing music to many of the most interesting series of recent years. These include the BBC's War and Peace, Hugo Blick's The Honourable Woman, Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror and season 3 through 6 of the acclaimed Netflix series The Crown. ANTHONY WILLIS Anthony Willis is a BAFTA-nominated composer, known for his evocative scores for Emerald Fennel's Oscar's Winning Promising Young Woman Blumhouse's Ai hit M3gan, and Fennell's latest psychological thriller Saltburn from MGM/Amazon starring Barry Keoghan & Jacob Elordi. He was named one of Variety's Top 10 Artisans to Watch in 2023 at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival. His recent projects also include Dreamworks' Animation's Annie award-winning How To Train Your Dragon: Homecoming, Seasons 6-8 of Epic's video game sensation Fortnite, and Michelle Morgan's comedy It Happened in L.A. As a protege of Oscar-nominated composer John Powell and Henry Jackman, Anthony has also contributed additional music to many of Hollywood's most beloved franchises including: How to Train your Dragon, Jumanji, Wreck it Ralph, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Pirates of the Caribbean and Rio. Originally from London England, Anthony trained as a chorister of St. George's chapel, Windsor Castle, UK before earning a First class honors degree in Music from the University of Bristol and a later graduate degree in Film Scoring from University of Southern California. Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. BRENDAN ANGELIDES Brendan Angelides' (formerly known as ESKMO) arrival at the world of scoring in 2016 was exactly the opportunity he had been hoping for. It felt conducive to the narrative process and sonic aesthetic he had developed in his work as a recording artist, being deeply in the mindset of The Echo Society, a collaborative of local Los Angeles artists and composer, at the time and recognizing the potential of his sound within a visual framework. Since 2016, Angelides has written the soundtracks for seven seasons of Billions, as well as Echoes (Netflix), Super Pumped (Showtime) and the 2021 film Naked Singularity. While scoring the four seasons of Netflix's celebrated 13 Reasons Why, he collaborated with Selena Gomez to produce a cover of Yazoo's “Only You.” In 2023, Angelides' embrace of new creative territories expands again as he presents his first video game score with Assassin's Creed: Mirage. Bringing his electronic artistry to the Ubisoft adventure set in ninth century Baghdad, Angelides worked with musicians connected with the region and culture including the New York Arabic Orchestra and Tunisian artist Emel Mathlouthi, whose viral protest song during the Arab Spring inspired the theme for Mirage's courageous female lead. The year also marks Angelides' most ambitious project with The Echo Society to date. Their soundtrack to director Darren Aronofsky's forthcoming film ‘Postcard from Earth' was showcased at the world's largest 4K screen at the Sphere, Las Vegas, across 160,000 speakers and 1600 subwoofers. NIMA FAKHRARA Iranian-born composer Nima Fakhrara has honed his craft for nearly twenty years by scoring more than 100 feature films, multiple AAA game franchises and international television shows, as well as crafting commercial music for boutique brands. This massive body of work led acclaimed director Anna Forester to tap Nima as composer for Bad Robot's latest feature film LOU (2022, starring Academy Award winner Allison Janney). His unique blend of East-meets-West and command of striking, sonic textures and timbres led gaming legend David Cage to select him to compose the music for 2018's wildly successful and critically acclaimed DETROIT BECOME HUMAN and the announcement to the Star Wars video game franchise ECLIPSE. Other gaming credits include WARHAMMER: SPACE MARINES 2, RESIDENT EVIL: REVELATIONS 2 and 1979 REVOLUTION. While his music is found all over the American media landscape, the composer's musical journey started back in Tehran at age five. Young Nima lugged his santur up six flights of stairs for each lesson with a master instructor. This early education imbued Fakhrara with a firm grasp of Persian classical music, an unyielding discipline, and a knack for complex rhythms. After moving to the Washington DC area at age 12, Fakhrara later earned a degree in composition from California State University while simultaneously studying ethnomusicology and Music Anthropology. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

Waves at Mosteiros reimagined by Cities and Memory. For this composition we've imagined that there is a lighthouse at Mosteiros in the Azores - there is, in reality, no such thing. In our imagined soundscape, the lighthouse keeper walks up to the door of the lighthouse on a foggy morning, waves crashing either side of him. The huge door opens and closes behind him, and he turns on a buzzing electric light.  Ascending the stairs of the lighthouse, he comes to the engine room, containing the mechanism for turning the huge lamp, as well as the controls for the foghorn. He pulls the foghorn lever twice, with the horn erupting inside the lighthouse. Descending the stairs, he steps outside to make sure that his warning to the approaching ship has been heeded. As well as the waves recording, the following samples were used: Inside the lighthouse on Flat Holm Island, recorded by Cities and Memory. An English country church door closes, recorded by Cities and Memory. "Footsteps, Muddy, E.wav" by InspectorJ (www.jshaw.co.uk) of Freesound.org Heavy-breathing man by Teebee_Deael, courtesy of Freesound.org Old lever pull by DrMinky Fluorescent light switch on off by kyles Walking down spiral stairs by giddster rotating dome.flac by ignotus Metal2.wav by arnaud coutancier Foghorn by Spitfire Audio

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

Frog chorus reimagined by Cities and Memory.  The rhythmic interweaving of the frogs' midnight calls is the basis for this composition, built entirely using Blankfor.ms by Spitfire Audio. Arpeggiated synths represent the different groupings of frogs calls, with the frog call interspersed on every sixth arp repetition. Periodically, the regularity of both music and frog calls breaks down, representing those moments when the frogs, distracted perhaps by a potential threat, break sequence and the calls become irregular before forming a sequence anew.

Looking back on their early writing sessions together, the pair reflect on their very first meeting and the approach they took to get the best out of one another. From scatting line after line over a beat and jamming ideas until something just sticks, to the promise of food as a reward for finishing each section of a song. Alongside sharing their thoughts on blending the worlds of hip-hop and R&B, we're treated to a production deep dive, looking at the intricate relationships between the parts that make up a beat and the small yet essential ingredients that add so much to each track in such subtle ways. HEYMUN and I have been following each others music and art for couple years now, and the level of excitement I think we both had during this conversation is probably very visible through the screen. During our chat, we spoke about Ambient music, things to be aware of being a content creator, live streaming, partnering with brands and much more. It was such a fun conversation and definitely won't be the last one! HEYMUN might have to be a regular guest on Khordmaster Keys. HEYMUN is a music composer, producer and video maker. Between projects, she creates weekly music videos on her YouTube Channel and loves the music community with all her heart + soul. One afternoon HEYMUN strolled into a music store and left with a 99 dollar Yamaha guitar. A sprained left pinky from over-stressing the high E string and several written tunes later, her debut EP “HEYMUN” was released in 2014. Some pretty unexpected things came out of her debut EP. Now it's Spitfire Audio, the most innovative sample library company in the world. This is the story of those two composers, Paul Thomson and Christian Henson! (Note: This is not a paid advertisement for Spitfire Audio. The Contemplative Podcast

In case you did not know this, let me restate. In September of last year, a Contemplative Classical community founded by Michael Price said its farewell. It has been active for three years, gathering a strong following for its expertly curated Spotify Playlist and a podcast where Matt Emery has interviewed contemporary musicians across thirteen (now archived) episodes. I quickly swept in to save this vessel, and in November declared the takeover and the revival of Contemplative Classical anew. Today, I am happy to announce the continuation of my commitment to this wonderful endeavour, with the official Series Two of The Contemplative Podcast. But, of course, I can't take all the credit here myself. This would not be possible without the perseverance of Matt Emery, who is the key to all the magic that is behind this show. I am only a publisher. In this new season, Emery has already put together an amazing lineup for the entire year, and today we kick off with the first episode, featuring Hannah Peel. This Irish London-based Emmy-nominated composer, singer, and arranger has worked on everything from documentaries (on “Game of Thrones”) to Netflix Special TV Series (“Kiss Me First”) to music for theatre adaptations (“Brighton Rock”), and the score for The Deceived. She's also collaborated with Spitfire Audio on creating the Music Box free Labs plugin. But I'm getting ahead of myself, and really should let Matt do the introductions. So here it is, without further ado, the first episode of Series Two!

ANNOUNCMENTS Recent live stream success - HSS Live-Artist Spotlights 006 https://youtu.be/GPT-_TGlt84   EAR TO THE GROUND 1 New music is no longer a thing, thanks to a pair of lawyers who created an algorithm to write every single musical melody that can possibly exist. Rather than claiming all music as their personal property, however, the duo have released their entire catalog of tunes into the public domain, in the hope that this will bring an end to copyright lawsuits.   Lawyer, musician, and programmer Damien Riehl came up with the idea after realizing that all singer-songwriters are essentially walking on a “melodic minefield”, because there are only a finite number of melodies that can exist. As such, with each new song that gets written, the chances of creating something genuinely unique decreases, and the possibility of writing a melody that has already been recorded by someone else increases.   In a recent Tedx Talk, Riehl explains that this wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for the ridiculous nature of copyright laws, which state that a piece of music becomes copyrighted the moment it is recorded. Even worse, it is possible to be sued for “subconscious infringement”, whereby an artist may have to pay a settlement to another artist even if they claim to have never heard the song that they are accused of copying. Riehl sites numerous such cases, revealing how George Harrison was found guilty of subconscious infringement after the chorus to his song My Sweet Lord was deemed to be too similar to a track called He's So Fine by The Chiffons. In another example, Radiohead were forced to name a group called The Hollies as co-writers of their song Creep, which apparently included a melody that also appears in one of the latter band's songs.   To try and bring an end to such cases, Riehl teamed up with Noah Rubin to create an algorithm that could produce every 12-note melody that has ever been written or can ever be written, using one octave of musical notes. The algorithm uses the same ‘brute force' technique that hackers use when attempting to steal passwords, by essentially generating every possible combination of characters. A total of 68 billion melodies were generated, which are now all available at allthemusic.info.    The pair argue that their algorithm highlights how musical melodies are essentially just numbers arranged in a particular order, and that since numbers can't be copyrighted, music should also not be constrained by infringement laws. "No song is new. Noah and I have exhausted the data set," explains Riehl. "Noah and I have made all the music to be able to allow future songwriters to make all of their music."   2 It's becoming clear that the Covid-19 coronavirus is going to have a significant impact on all of our lives for the foreseeable future and, sadly, it's likely that the music-making industry is going to suffer.    Of course, there are still plenty of ways that you can indulge your passion - a period of self-isolation might actually help you to finish that album you're been working on or even master a new instrument - but in the world of live events, the picture looks a little less rosy. Around the world gigs, trade shows and other music-focused gatherings are being cancelled on a daily basis and, unfortunately, this is a trend that's set to continue.  To help you keep abreast of developments, and to make you aware if you need to change your plans in any way, I've included a link in the description of this podcast to an ongoing list that Music Radar has put together for live show updates. This guide shows the current impact that the coronavirus is having, and they're committed to keep it updated as news comes in. LUNA transforms UA's industry-standard Apollo interfaces into the most inspiring and fully integrated recording systems available. LUNA Recording System consists of a UA Thunderbolt-equipped audio interface, the LUNA Application, LUNA Extensions, and LUNA Instruments. LUNA will be available as a free download for Apollo and Arrow Thunderbolt audio interface owners (Mac only) in Spring 2020 Deep Apollo Integration — Fast, Natural Workflow Unlike traditional DAW software, LUNA Recording System's tight hardware-software integration allows quickly routing and recording audio through DSP-powered UAD plug-ins with no discernable latency via the new Accelerated Realtime Monitoring feature. Accelerated Realtime Monitoring is poised to be a major revelation for those unaccustomed to working on a $10k+ DSP-assisted recording system; music production will instantly seem more robust, dependable, and intuitive, without latency or monitoring hassles.  Built-In Neve® Summing — Instant Classic Console Sound LUNA Recording System offers precisely emulated audio summing circuitry from the Neve 80-Series audio mixing consoles designed by Neve Electronics in the 1960s and early 1970s, featuring the harmonically rich sound of the Neve 1272 summing amplifier. Far beyond a “summing plug-in," Neve Summing is a LUNA Extension built-in to the fabric of LUNA's mixer — and can instantly transform a clean technical mix into a classic-sounding recording filled with energy and life. Integrated Multitrack Tape — Warmth and Punch on Demand LUNA's audio transport features integrated Multitrack Tape emulation via the included "Oxide" LUNA Extension — providing sonic qualities commonly described by audio engineers as "warmth" and "cohesion" on every desired audio or instrument track. LUNA Recording System users may choose to further explore various magnetic tape sounds with the optional Studer® A800 Tape Recorder Extension (sold separately). All-New LUNA Instruments — Incredible Realism to Fuel Inspiration LUNA is further distinguished by all-new software-based LUNA Instruments — bringing Universal Audio's expertise in electrical and acoustic modeling, sampling, synthesis, and signal processing to virtual instruments for the first time ever. The resulting software instruments are ultra-realistic, responsive, and “alive” with inspiration. At launch, available LUNA Instruments will include: Moog® Minimoog — developed in partnership with Moog Music, the Moog Minimoog is an incredibly accurate and inspiring emulation of the archetypal 1971 Moog synthesizer Ravel™ grand piano — a breathtaking model of a Steinway Model B grand piano based on UA's proprietary sampling, physical modeling, and new Ultra-Resonance technology — providing all the sonic nuance of this studio classic Shape™ — a complete creative toolkit with vintage keys, drums/percussion, guitar/bass, orchestral content, and realtime synthesis, courtesy of Universal Audio, Spitfire Audio, Orange Tree Samples, Loops de la Creme, and more — included free in LUNA. 3 FREE PLUGS  Xfer Records Dimension Expander - If you're looking to add unique and insane space and stereo width to your sound, Xfer Records Dimension Expander is a must. The four-voice chorus with extended delay times takes advantage of phasing to further enhance the "out of the speaker" width. Two of the chorus voices are out of phase from the other two, which tickles your brain and confuses it in enjoyable ways, creating an unbeatable stereo effect. It sounds great on pretty much anything but shines a bit extra on vocals and cleaner guitars. Try it and find out which other instruments love this plugin. Thrillseeker XTC - Sometimes you need to bring a sound back to life - you hear it has potential, but you know it can be so much more. Bringing back the mojo of a sound (or several) is what the exciter Thrillseeker XTC is all about. In the stylish analog interface, you have ultimate control over the low, mid, and high end with full respective EQ bands to dial it down even further. One of the more exciting features of the Thrillseeker XTC is the "mojo" knob. The Cambridge Dictionary defines mojo as "a quality that attracts people to you and makes you successful and full of energy." Switch out the "you" to "your track," there's your explanation to what the Thrillseeker XTC is all about. I really can't explain it better. It does magic on your track and makes it sound loads better. Krush - Who doesn't love an excellent, free bit crusher? Look no further than Krush. Krush is all about down-sampling, crushing, and driving your sound to insane levels – if you want. Hidden in this gem is a reliable filter and an LFO to manage all controls in the plugin fully. And with the separate dry and wet dial, you can add some exciting flavors to your drum loops, for example. Just a little bit can go a long way to liven up a dull 4/4 beat. It sounds like a bit crusher should and does everything you want, with a bit more to keep things interesting. If you want a free bit crusher, I recommend you check this one out right now.    MAIN THOUGHT   4 The McGurk Effect   Have you ever tweaked a knob on a compressor or an EQ plugin while looking at it on screen and hear an audible difference, only to find that it was in fact bypassed the whole time?   Well, if you've been mixing for very long, I'm sure at one point in time (knowingly or unknowingly) you've done this.    This audio/visual phenomenon is not only real, but it is scientifically proven. In fact it's got a rather Scottish name, it's called "The McGurk Effect" .    In 1976, Chief psychologist McGurk and his partner MacDonald, reported a powerful multisensory illusion occurring with audiovisual speech. They recorded a voice articulating a consonant and dubbed it with a face articulating another consonant. Even though the acoustic speech signal was well recognized alone, it was heard as another consonant after dubbing with incongruent visual speech. The illusion has been termed the McGurk effect. It has been replicated many times, and it has sparked an abundance of research. The reason for the great impact is because it is a striking demonstration of multisensory integration. It shows that auditory and visual information is merged into a unified, integrated percept.   The McGurk effect, in laymen terms, is a perceptual phenomenon that demonstrates an interaction between hearing and vision in auditory perception. The illusion occurs when the auditory component of one sound is paired with the visual component of another sound, leading to the perception of a third sound. (See it for yourself here)   So, what can we learn from this? Well, it demonstrates our brains ability to marry the audio world to the visual and also shows us that we can be easily tricked into hearing things that are not there. Arguably, this is why some say that analog mixing is better musically speaking. Because, tactile knobs and low visibility to the specific ranges found on the mixing board or outboard gear, forces an engineer to use their ears more than their eyes to makes subtle adjustments.    Because of this, some plug in companies have actually went as far as to create a sort of clean slate approach to audio alteration. For instance, one company (Audio Thing) released a FREE (yes FREE plugin), that you can download and try for yourself.  it's called the Blindfold EQ. The Blindfold EQ is a freeware EQ plugin inspired by a quote from Matt Wallace, found in the book Recording Unhinged by Sylvia Massy.  Matt states, “If I were King of the Universe, consoles would have no indication of frequency near the EQ knobs, because when you show the frequency, then most people EQ by eye. […] But seriously, you should have no idea of what frequency you are boosting or cutting. It doesn't matter what number is. It matters how it sounds and how it feels. That's it!” Matt Wallace   Ans so, the Blindfold EQ is created. The Blindfold EQ has 4 bands (LowShelf, LowMid, HighMid, HighShelf), but each knob is blind. Meaning, there are no indicators or numbers to show frequency values, gain values or Q values. You have to use your ears, and in turn you nullify the need for specific values when making adjustments.   Now, although this doesn't completely eliminate the McGurk effect (due to the fact that one could still make changes in bypass and hear audible differences) it does at least minimize the need to have values for everything and quantify music into a little box.    There you have it, a scientific explanation for the embarrassing moment when (Lord forbid) a client sees you adjust an EQ that is bypassed. But then, would they even notice it? Perhaps we could even utilize this as a means of not fiddling with the sound of something that we have painstakingly beat into submission at the artists request. Just simply duplicate the plugin, and then bypass the duplicate. Now show them your making a change and let the McGurk effect work for you instead of against you!    Sources/Links: 1  - 2 - 3 - 4
