I pretty much go at this work non-stop because there's a lot to get to and I have a reputation to keep. A reputation for my dedication to doing the work. Is dedication or is it something more stubborn? Either way, I didn't put shout-outs in this one because I want to get it out the door so I can move on to writing two stories for C-Ville Weekly, possibly doing land use transactions, prepping what will likely be a fairly short Week Ahead, and then getting ready for next week's stories. But Fridays are a good day to send out this list of social media sites where you can help share the work. And here are some social media possibilities:* I created a BlueSky account because I missed Twitter but I don't do much except post links to Information Charlottesville stories. That may change.* There are 445 followers of the Town Crier Productions Facebook page which is currently solely used to let people know when a story has been posted to Information Charlottesville. I may begin using this to do live video of podcast recording. Interested?* There are slightly more followers on Instagram, but I have paused posting here because I want to make the images look better and so far that's not been worth investing the time.* I post a version of the Week Ahead on Reddit each Sunday which is a little shorter. This is intended to attract people to the newsletter and many of you got here from there. But there is no official page and you have to know my username. Maybe I'll change that in the future?* Except for reposts of this show, there is no new content on the Charlottesville Podcasting Network but it predates this newsletter by 15 years. I had a good idea and all I wanted to do was tell stories about the community. Here I am still, hoping to get more people involved.* I'm not doing video. The government has confirmed major changes to New Zealand's secondary school qualification system, officially replacing NCEA with a new subject-based model. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Education Minister Erica Stanford announced the shift in Orewa, saying the current NCEA system is too complex and doesn't clearly show how well students have mastered their subjects. From 2029, Year 12 students will begin the New Zealand Certificate of Education, followed by the New Zealand Advanced Certificate of Education for Year 13 in 2030. Level 1 will be removed in 2028. Under the new structure, students will take at least five subjects, and must pass a minimum of three to earn the qualification. Every subject will include internal assessments and an exam, and results will be reported using a six-point grading scale from A+ to E. Certificates will list each subject and the grade achieved, with endorsement awards for top performers. Year 11 students will face new compulsory subjects — science, English or te reo rangatira, and mathematics — and all students will need to pass the new literacy and numeracy Foundational Award. The curriculum will also expand to include new subjects such as Civics, Politics and Philosophy, Advanced Mathematics, and Journalism and Media, alongside industry-developed subjects like building and construction and primary industries. Stanford says the changes are designed to move students away from “credit crunching” and toward genuine learning progress. Current Year 9 students will be the first full cohort to move through the new system. So all the statistics point to NCEA failing but like all tools it's because of the people who used the system not exclusively because of the system A common reaction amongst older New Zealander is how tis resembles the School C, UE system we grew up with so it was less of a revolution and more of a return to basics that were well understood The easy criticism for older folk was the marking system. For some reason parents and employers did not understand the Excellence, Merit and Acheived rankings when obviously Excellence means an A, Merit a b and Acheived a C. The A to E system is one that parents grew up with but in the cold light of day is just as abstract as the NCEA rankings. The real problem lay in the rorting of the credits with students choosing easy to pass subjects and avoiding anything that seemed challenging. But the real responsibility for the credit crunching surely lies with the parents as well And the strength of NCEA was recognising that there is not one education for all. That some people don't cope with maths or English or Science and the system recognised what talents they had. My youngest and I had a big to do over his Year 13 subject choice. He detested maths and wanted to study photography. I said you have to have maths. he argued that he had as much maths as any average student would need for real life. He won. And now he is a successful photographer doing his own taxes and playing Sharesies particularly well. So he was right. But I'm just lucky he's such a rounded individual But while the new system re-emphasises 3 basic pillars of knowledge in English Maths and Science a lot of those BS credit crunching subjects remain. Other arguments are amongst those who say exams are artificial and how do you sit an exam on Food Technology which is the new fangled name for cooking. Or photography which still exists. The question exists is this a brave new world or will the old problems still remain. Luxon also used the event to comment on global instability, national security, and recent speculation about a potential National–Labour coalition, dismissing the idea outright. Eric Paul Dennis, research associate for infrastructure at the Citizens Research Council, joins Guy Gordon for the first podcast of 2026. Earlier this week, Dennis' research brief, How the 2025 Transportation Funding Package Accidentally Cut Road Funding in FY2026, contrasted the promise of new funding in the current fiscal year with the reality. Guy and Eric pick up where their conversation left off in late 2025 — at the start of fiscal year (FY) 2026 — when the Michigan Legislature passed and Governor Whitmer signed Michigan's 2025 transportation funding package, billed as delivering more than $1 billion in new road funding for FY 2026. But the reality is that Michigan road agencies have seen a more than 15 percent decrease in state funding distributions in the months following the adoption of the package. This discrepancy between a promised funding increase and a realized funding decrease is largely due to differences in formal state accounting and the timing of funding distributions to road agencies. Additional delays and uncertainties are imposed by statutory details and bureaucratic complexities related to new funding sources provided by the 2025 transportation funding package. Road agencies will see funding increases beginning in April 2026 (the second half of the fiscal year). However, the increases in the final six months of FY2026 are likely to be smaller than the decreases seen in the first six months. Although the official state budget may reflect an over $1 billion increase in road funding in FY2026, road agencies may receive less funding than in FY2025. The promised FY2026 funding increase will likely be distributed to agencies in FY2027, with some disbursed in the final months of FY2026. However, the exact timing and amount of this funding remain unclear.

Haverhill Public Schools are getting ready to close the current year, but planning ahead for summer school and expansion and improvements in the fall.The School District is expanding enrollment at its Gateway Alternative School next year and will holding a cookout this afternoon for parents, guardians and students to meet the staff and ask questions. School Superintendent Margaret Marotta, a guest Tuesday on WHAV's morning program, said the Gateway School has been a small program for students struggling at the high school level. Starting this fall, it expands to include students in the seventh and eighth grades.“So, it's going to be located, presently, at the Crowell School, over in Riverside. We are going to start our school there. We'll probably grow it eventually and, for anybody who might be interested in those grades we are having a cookout this Thursday night starting at five at the Crowell School. People can go to our website and we'd love to have people just come down, meet the staff and see if the school makes sense for them,” Marotta said.Marotta said the Gateway School is limited to around 120 students versus the 2,000 students at Haverhill High School. She said some of the indicators that a student may benefit from the program may be that a student believes Haverhill High isn't a good fit for them or they may have issues with attendance, grades or the social aspect to going to school. Marotta says some students just need a smaller, more personalized, school to thrive.On another topic, Marotta said finals at the high school are this week. Next Tuesday night will see ceremonies marking the end of the school year, and Wednesday, June 15, is the final day of the school year.“So, we are winding down next week for this school year, but then we are winding back up at the end of June for the summer program at the high school and, mid-July, for our summer camps and summer programs at all of our other schools. So, if there are any parents out there listening, just realizing now that summer is two weeks away and they need to make a plan for their child, we do have some space left, and they can get in touch with the office at their school,” she notedMeanwhile, registration is ongoing for students entering kindergarten in the fall, along with new students to the Haverhill School system. Haverhill school officials are in the process of hiring teachers and support staff for the new school year.Support the show

I recently spoke with Rob Henderson about the HBO show Succession. We both have found the series a smart and compelling take on our contemporary politics. Some themes we touch on: differences between conservative and liberal elites; the unusual lack of diversity for a series in our “Current Year” atmosphere; how we define “pervert” and whether one of the Roy children qualifies; the portrayal of both the conservative and liberal perspectives on political divides; why even those on the left are probably more likely to find a portrayal of a conservative family more interesting than one of a liberal family; and how the show captures intellectual currents and dynamics within the conservative movement. At one point, a character actually says the words “He's a neocon pretending to be a paleocon!” The show includes a clear stand-in for Bernie Sanders. I also see depictions of Mike Pence, Marco Rubio, the version of Tucker that exists in the liberal imagination, and a senator representing some kind of integralist-alt right synthesis. Is there a Trump? His shadow hangs over the whole show, and we discuss the arguments for and against his existence in its universe. I explain to Rob why I think that one particular episode serves as a kind of artistic representation of my article, “Why is Everything Liberal?”, while the series as a whole is also consistent with themes from “Liberals Read, Conservatives Watch TV.”You can listen to the podcast here, or watch the video at YouTube.
