Like many of us, George Thompson once had a running story in his head that said he wasn't likable, wasn't successful enough, wasn't good enough. Upon studying Taoism and practicing the mindful movement of Tai Chi, Thompson's inner story began to change. He now uses the transformative power of stories to help others reconnect to their own. In this episode, Sean Fargo speaks with George Thompson about how he found Tai Chi and his teacher, Master Gu. They discuss Thompson's latest film, The Subtle Art of Losing Yourself. The film is a retelling of the story of our relationship with nature and addresses the root causes of environmental and mental health challenges. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why having an inner critic is a shared human experience How Tai Chi and Taoism relate to mindfulness Why movement is a significant part of mindfulness practice The benefits of cultivating breath-to-movement connection Why true mindful observation leads to self-compassion What nature has to teach us about interconnectedness Why it's time to retell the story of our role in nature How to use storytelling to help others find their own Learn more about your ad choices. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
Following the outbreak of the American Civil War, the abolitionist movement underwent an “astonishing transformation”, which would in time alter the direction of the war, the shape of the postwar settlement, and destroy the abolitionist movement itself. As the movement's moral outsiders found themselves becoming interest group insiders, not only their approach but also their message and ultimately their goals changed. Ideological differences became ideological conflicts, and personal animosities were soon blended into the mix. This is the argument of Frank J. Cirillo in his new book The Abolitionist Civil War: The Abolitionist Civil War: Immediatists and the Struggle to Transform the Union. Frank J. Cirillo is a historian of slavery and antislavery in the nineteenth-century United States. He has held positions at the University of Bonn, The New School, and the University of Virginia. This is his first book. For Further Investigation The photograph is of, from left to right: Wendell Phillips, William Lloyd Garrison, and George Thompson (an English advocate against slavery). The standard biography of Wendell Phillips is James Brewer Stewart, Wendell Phillips: Liberty's Hero (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 1986); Henry Mayer wrote a popular biography of William Lloyd Garrison titled All on Fire: William Lloyd Garrison and the Abolition of Slavery; for a wider focus, see the second edition of the classic study by Ronald G. Walters, American Reformers, 1815-1860 Numerous conversations on Historically Thinking have dealt with related issues. For an overview of abolitionism, see Episode 82: Abolitionism, A Long Conversation. The overlooked importance of Unionism was at issued in Episode 132: Armies of Deliverance and again in Episode 291: True Blue. The drive for black voting rights by American Blacks was the focus of Episode 294: Black Suffrage. And Abraham Lincoln's racial attitudes were the subject of a conversation with Michael Burlingame in Episode 242: Was Abraham Lincoln a Racist?

Have things in your life ever seemed impossible? We are all capable of so much more than we think we are. I was tested for schizophrenia, and when things seemed impossible, I was shown I had a strength I had no idea was inside me. You have this too. We are all ordinary people capable of extraordinary things. I ended up successfully recovering from schizophrenia, and now I help people with mental illness in developing countries so they can get access to primary mental health care at www.MindAid.ca. Matthew Dickson bicycled across Canada at the age of 20, but shortly afterwards, he developed schizophrenia and was forced to alter the course of his life for many years to get through the disease. While working on his recovery in his home country of Canada, his heart went out to people with mental illness in developing countries who had it much worse than he did. After successfully recovering from schizophrenia, Matthew now helps people with mental illness in developing countries so they can get access to primary mental health care through his Mind Aid platform. 3 top tips for my audience: 1. “Unbeatable Mind” by Mark Divine, mindset secrets of Navy SEALs, SEALs are taught they are capable of 20x more than they think they are 2. “The Survivor Personality” by Al Siebert, how people survived the Holocaust, cancer, natural disasters, alcoholism and thrived afterwards 3. “Verbal Judo: The Gentle Art of Persuasion” by George Thompson, how police officers deal with people with words, not weapons Social media and contact info www.MindAid.ca https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp2Qj2tKgfh9pt4OoLuuUuw https://www.facebook.com/mindaid1 https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthewjdickson https://twitter.com/MattMindAid https://www.instagram.com/matthewjdickson/ https://www.tiktok.com/@mattmindaid

Trauma Responses: Beyond Fight or Flight Childhood trauma can trigger a chronic “fight or flight” response, even when children are placed in safe, loving foster homes. How do caregivers deal with that response to build relationships? George Thompson, Director of Product Management for Benelli, tells Ramsey about adding 28-gauge to the successful Super Black Eagle platform, covering a range of other Benelli-related innovations. Where'd the philosophy "carry a 20-gauge but shoulder a 12-gauge" originate? Why'd they choose 28-gauge and what were some of the challenges--and will there be a .410? What are some of the subtle differences between SBE and Ethos shotguns, and how has the 28-gauge been received by customers? Will the proprietary Benelli Surface Treatment be available in other colors? What makes the 828 U Over-under shotgun unique? How have "performance shop" Benelli shotguns been modified, and why? Whether you're a long-time Benelli shooter or just looking to make a well-informed decision about your next shotgun purchase, you'll enjoy this highly informative episode.
