In this sixth episode of our Learn about M.E. podcast series, we hear from a Clinical Nurse Specialist in M.E., Keith Anderson, about the vital support that nurses can provide to people with M.E. Keith is joined by a retired Nurse, Midwife, Health Visitor and Clinical Practice Teacher and Carer, Pamela Binny, who offers insight into some of the knowledge on M.E. she wished that she had while she was practising as a Nurse. She is able to describe, first hand, the devastating impact of M.E. not just on the person living with it but the family supporting the person. We hear how Nurses can very quickly update their professional knowledge by accessing a free CPD module on ME/CFS and listening to this podcast. The module takes under an hour to complete and offers 1 CPD point. The revised guidance on M.E./CFS contained in the new NICE guideline is also highlighted as a useful tool for Nurses. It is suggested that rest and pacing are much better approaches to managing the symptoms of M.E./CFS rather than Graded exercise therapy (GET) or Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). The guests discuss how much of the learning can also be applied to nursing people with Long Covid as the clinical presentation can be the same or very similar.

It’s fifty years since the Equal Pay Act became law, though employers were given a couple of years to prepare for the change to take effect. The legislation followed the strike of a group of women machinists at the Ford factory in Dagenham who wanted to be paid just as a man would for doing skilled work. It set out that an individual can claim equal pay for work of equal value. However, it’s proved tricky over the years for women to find out what their male comparators were earning. It’s also proved tricky for women without financial and legal support to use the law. However, cases have been brought over the years and as the law has been strengthened. Last year, Glasgow City Council agreed to pay out a reported £548 million in compensation to thousands of women who were paid less than men working in jobs on the same grade. Jane is joined by Frances O’Grady, General Secretary of the TUC and by Jane Hannon, Employment partner at the law firm DLA Piper Health visiting is one of those professions that most people think is a bit of a non-job. After 40 years in the NHS and 30 as a health visitor, Rachael Hearson tells us why this is not the case. She’s written about her experiences and explains how the role has changed and why it’s needed more now than ever before. Her book is called Handle With Care. Public toilets have been a well-known victim of council cuts, leaving the UK with 50% fewer toilets than a decade ago. Coronavirus has caused even more closures – albeit temporarily. But where does that leave people who need urgent access to the loo? Jo Umbers from the Bladder and Bowel community explains how this issue is affecting women of all ages. Raymond Martin, from the British Toilet Association, discusses the economic and health importance of public toilets in a post-Covid world. Producer: Louise Corley Editor: Karen Dalziel

From a recent CHIMAT email Amy was curious about the latest Health Visitor service delivery metrics and how these compare to figures from 5yrs ago - 2013 - midway through the Call to Action - are these metrics an accurate measure of how Health Visitors are doing? Jenny and Amy hypothesise on why the figures seem to have improved and are the correct things being measured? What are we loosing to maintain these figures and how could this impact on our retention and development - should we keep a look out for and apply for opportunities that come up for further training? Please follow us on twitter: @IamaHV and our FB page: I am a Health Visitor and if you enjoy/find our podcasts interesting then please do share them with other friends/colleagues/anyone who asks “What do you do?” (We’ve got a podcast especially for that one!). In this week’s (quite long) episode Jen and Amy record a basic overview of what a health visitor is, targeted at parents or other healthcare professionals. Share, share, share! Let’s raise our profile! As health visitors we know we are often misunderstood and unfairly dreaded! Usually when we do arrive on your doorstep we (hopefully) debunk some of these myths and put lots of fears to rest… but wouldn’t it be nice if we could do this in advance, so you are less terrified of us from the start?! Health Visiting is a tailored, needs based-service built on relationships with families. Jen and Amy take a look at England's 4,5,6 model of health visiting and have a giggle at some of the misconceptions and myths we have come across! We love our job! It’s fantastic and we want to share it with you. Thanks for listening. Amy recently attended the 1001 critical days APPG (All Party Parliamentary Group) where the government's new green paper 'Transforming Children and Young People's Mental Health Provision' was discussed. This green paper sets out the government's proposals for mental health provision nationally, so it is exceptionally important and relevant for all health visitors. Find out on this episode why the paper has been so controversial and why we are asking for you to please write your own response to the consultation. As a group we health visitors need to advocate for our children and families here. Following on from last weeks episode on Birth Trauma, Jen and Amy chat with Bridget Hargreave, the author of 'Fine (Not Fine): Perspectives and Experiences of Postnatal Depression'. Bridget discusses her experiences with health visitors and how we can help women share how they are truly feeling. We talk about what we should (and shouldn't!) say and do when someone tells us they're having a really bad time, how to use scales like the Edinburgh Scale, the PHQ-9 and the Wholly Questions, how feeding issues and reflux or colic can impact on mood and interventions such as listening visits. We talk about our own experiences in practice, the Nice Guidance on Perinatal Mental Health and Bridget talks from her own lived experience and those of the other women shared in her book. Heather talks to Hazel Stuteley OBE who is a retired health visitor from Cornwall and some of the community leaders from the Beacon Community Regeneration Partnership and Townstal Community Partnership. During the 1990’s Hazel and her fellow health visitor Phil Trenoweth led some multi-award-winning community engagement work in the Beacon Estate, near Falmouth in Cornwall. But she didn’t stop there and has now worked alongside a total of eight vulnerable communities across the UK over the last 10 years to empower residents to successfully transform their communities and in doing so, make huge improvements in things like unemployment, crime and children’s education. Hazel’s work clearly illustrates that nurses, health visitors and midwives can lead some remarkable changes. She will also draw out why she, as a health visitor, felt compelled to act and why she thinks her leadership was so well accepted by those around her. The importance of Hazel’s work is that the successes she has led have now been analysed and developed into a series of clear steps which are now enabling local councils, NHS partners and others across the country to make Big Society a reality.
