The challenges of being a woman in medicine and a woman treated by the medical system are real. Dr. Somi Javaid shares her experience working in gynecology and sexual health, opening HerMD, and the dire need for better education, representation, and resources for women's health.Dr. Somi shares the challenges of balancing motherhood, working at a medical practice, and being a part of a broken healthcare system, which led her to quit her job. Though a frustrating trajectory, this path led her to open HerMD, an incredible comprehensive women's healthcare practice specializing in menopause, sexual health, and advanced gynecology. We discuss the major issues in women's healthcare today, which consistently result in a lack of funding and disparity in research. The need for education is critical. Most women don't know the difference between perimenopause and menopause, how their bodies change after pregnancy, or that hormones are good for them! We then talk about normalizing libido fluctuations, pelvic floor health, and testosterone therapy. Reducing the stigma around sexual health and women's healthcare conversations is deeply important work!Topics Covered:Quitting medicine to open HerMDThe state of women's health and sexual healthcarePerimenopause and menopause symptomsSex is an intimate conversationWomen's health double standardTestosterone therapyConfusion around hormones Guest Info Instagram: @somijavaidmdWebsite: drsomi.comWebsite: hermd.comFollow Me:Instagram: @afinehuman Shop Dame: dame.com This podcast was produced by The Wave Podcasting

On today's episode, Ali talks to Komel Caruso, the Co-Founder of HerMD, about her infertility journey. Komel talks about growing up in a traditional Muslim household and the sex education (or lack thereof) she received as a Catholic school student. It was, "Don't have sex, you'll get pregnant. You'll just get pregnant every time you have sex. I was just so fearful that if I had sex, I would get pregnant. Even if I was using birth control, I could still get pregnant. That fear leads to a lot of anxiety," she says. Komel also talks about having a "wonderful surprise baby" in her early twenties, discovering that she had PCOS, and what happened when she started taking Clomid. She also talks about IUI, IVF, "feeling like a failure," and finally getting pregnant again via ART. She also talks about her sister and co-founder, Board Certified OBGYN Dr. Somi Javaid, and how they created HerMD, looking to revolutionize women's health and pivot away from "drive-thru gynecology." For more, go to www.hermd.com/TOPICS COVERED IN THIS EPISODE:Infertility; PCOS; IUI; IVF; IVF cycles; IVF treatment; twin pregnancy; Clomid; pregnancy loss; pregnancy after infertility; motherhood after infertility; women's health; sisterhood; OBGYN; reproductive rights EPISODE SPONSORS:WORK OF ARTAli's Children's Book about IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technologyhttps://www.infertileafgroup.com/booksDo not miss Ali's children's book about IVF! We couldn't wait to speak with Komel Caruso, Co-Founder & Chief Growth Officer of HerMD, a comprehensive women's healthcare clinic that's creating a safe, inclusive space for patients. We were particularly interested in HerMD's mission in breaking the shame-cycle so often surrounding issues like menopause and sexual health. Komel founded HerMD with her sister Somi, inspired by their mother's experience of being repeatedly dismissed by doctors when she was experiencing pain. While Somi had experience working as a doctor for 15 years, Komel had never worked in the medical field. What she did have was a desire to make an impact in women's healthcare and experience in marketing and social strategy with 16 years of working for Kaplan under her belt. The sisters noticed a trend in women not being believed (about their own bodies!) and wanted to fill this great void in women's healthcare. One thing that makes HerMD stand apart is that all of their obgyn's are trained in menopause and sexual healthcare, which should sound like a given, right? Unfortunately, it's not. Only 20 percent of obgyns are trained in menopause and sexual health care. No wonder there can be such shame and stigma in talking about this stuff! What started with one office quickly grew when Komel noticed patients were traveling to HerMD's soul location from 35 states! Clearly the void was even greater than she or Somi had realized. Thanks to Komel's background in business, what started out as helping her sister with a passion project became Komel's full time job, and a saving grace to women all over the country. To hear more of Komel's career journey, tune in to this episode wherever you get your podcasts!

Over 50 million women in the US are menopausal, yet, there is still a lack of education and awareness around menopausal symptoms and treatment options. Why is society still not ready to talk openly (and without shame or stigma!) about menopause and its symptoms? The latest episode of the HerVoice podcast is focused on talking all things menopause with Womaness founders Sally Mueller and Michelle Jacobs. We're talking symptoms, treatment options, cultural views on menopause, and menopause as the (not so silent) glass ceiling. Women are in the prime of their lives when they experience menopause - why are we not celebrating this time and giving women the information they need to treat their symptoms so they can live their lives to the fullest. As Sally and Michelle say, it's the afterparty, and we at HerMD can't think of a better way to reframe the conversation around menopause.

Today we're talking to my friend and fellow sex therapist Danielle Crotty. We went through the sex therapy and sexual education program at U of M together and we're sharing our experiences with private practice therapy,  the reality of sexual health concerns, and the lack of education. How did Danielle land in this field? She started her undergrad in nursing, but realized quickly that was not for her.  She ended up taking a sex and gender course and that was where she really felt like that was something she wanted to do. After about 2 years she got her masters in marriage and family therapy.  Then she worked for nonprofit agency for over 5 years working general mental health.  After going through the for the UofM program, she ultimately moved to a private practice for sex and relationship therapy in Cincinnati. What are the Primary things Danielle works on with people in her practice? The practice as a whole sees a variety of people, but she tends to see more couples, traditional and nontraditional, because of her licence in marriage therapy. They also partner with a sexual health practice called HerMD  because a lot of women are coming in with sexual health concerns, so we want to make sure we cover the physical side of things as well. What would the physical side encompass?A lot of women experience pain during intercourse and they don't recognize that that's not normal, your body is meant to experience pleasure not pain. They could be experiencing different physical health dysfunctions that not a lot of women are aware of that are causing this pain.  Daniele loves being able to provide education and see the spark in women's eyes when they're given hope and realize they don't have to live the rest of their lives like this. Our goal as sex therapists, or any doctor specializing in sexual health is to create pleasure. What does she recommend to someone who's struggling with desire? There's a book she recommends called Come as You Are, because we often neglect to recognize the external factors that influence our desire. The book does a great job of explaining external factors or external stressors that are creating a lack of desire for you. It could be something as simple as clothes on the floor or the dogs are barking.  Once we know those things, then we know we can do something about them, we can adjust our lifestyle around them or adapt when we're going to be sexually intimate. A huge component for a lot of women who have a lack of desire is recognizing that it has nothing to do with you, it has so much more to do with everything going on around you.In your practice and the clients you're working with, is there anything that you see people do to get quicker or better results in their work?Talk about it. So many people are truly shocked about just how much normalizing the conversation and talking about sex can go a really long way. The biggest thing or the first thing people notice when coming to therapy is this is the first time I've talked about this, or told my partner about this. Once you start talking about it, the hesitation goes away, and you're able to talk about sex more freely.Resources for someone looking to learn more about sexual health educationThat Feminist ChickThe Vagina BlogAASECT Gottman CardsConnect with Danielle!IG: @daniellecrottymft Practice Website: Emma-Schmidt.comConnect with Rachel!Instagram: @The_Rachel_MaineWebsite: https://linktr.ee/WellnessSexpertiseFacebook: Rachel MaineEmail: therachelmaine@gmail.com

"My world tumbled upside down. I was managing taking care of three children from home, helping them navigate the realities of our new world while trying to keep my staff employed and safe. I sadly said goodbye to many team members as they made the difficult choice to stay home. We had to figure out how to deliver health care in this new world, where PPE was not widely available, and so many questions lingered about the virus. I had to put the needs of patients, staff, and my children before my own. That’s what we all do as mothers and as physicians. I underestimated how long the sacrifices would last. I watched my schedule increase from three days of patient care to five, along with running the business and managing employees, recording podcasts, and holding educational events. We run a health care business to educate, advocate for, and empower our patients. Yet, in the midst of all this, here I was at the helm, the unhealthiest I had ever been. I had abdominal pain, insomnia, anxiety. I had walked away from working out and was not careful about the food I was choosing to put into my body."
