Dan Sullivan and Steven Krein discuss Dan's latest quarterly book, Capitalism—And Everything Else, and explain what capitalism really means, why many people believe they don't like it, why it's misunderstood, and its five growth stages. Highlights: Some people incorrectly approach capitalism as a rival to ideologies like communism and fascism. Capitalism isn't in competition with anything. Capitalism involves capitalizing on your own talent and time, your production, your abilities, your profitability, and on living in a world of greater prosperity. Communism, feudalism, fascism, and Nazism aren't methodologies, they're ideologies. If you multiply the impact of your uniqueness over a span of years, you'll have done it through the methods of capitalism. There's a deep emotional element to success from capitalistic activities such as building a business and entrepreneurship. Systems that are anti-capitalist in their ideologies invariably use capitalist methods to achieve success. Wherever capitalist methodology is followed, things improve. Some people are bothered by capitalist methodology because it demands extraordinary individual accountability. Philanthropic efforts often fall flat because they don't operate within a capitalistic framework. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is indeed going to announce his candidacy for president of the United States. He's going to announce it on Twitter alongside Elon Musk! Highlights: ● “Some have suggested that choosing Twitter as his announcement platform is actually a sign of his weakness.” ● “With Musk's support, DeSantis is showing that he represents the next generation of Republicans that can attract a wide swath of support among disaffected Democrats.” ● “My personal view, at this point, is that DeSantis is simply not going to be able to recalibrate disaffected Democrats around the Republican Party in any way comparable to the way Trump did so with white blue-collar workers, and with Latinos, and with black men.” ● “It's being widely reported that as we speak, allies for Ron DeSantis are amassing upwards of $200 million dollars to defeat Trump in the 2024 presidential race. So her's reactions are optional, but healing resp, healing responses are not. And I wish that I had understood that early because so many people use good tools at the wrong time and in the wrong dose. From your customer’s perspective, what do you think makes them want to buy something? Is it having the right words? Trigger questions? A good slogan? Discounts? Well my friend, in today's episode we're going to break some myths and talk about how to increase your sales opportunities. A couple weeks ago my family was visited by a door to door sales person and I’m breaking down this real-world example we just experienced to help you see how to apply this to your own business. Let’s dive in! Biggest Takeaways: The answer will always be no, if you never take action. You do not need to offer a discount. Ask yourself if it’s really required? Think more about how you can provide more value to your customer vs giving a discount. You have a brilliant ability to do exactly what your customers want. When you give high quality advice around the things that your customers need, it's going to be much easier for you to add more sales onto your bottom line. Don't allow yourself to be overly nervous and those nerves to spill over into all areas of your interaction with your customer When you’re able to do exactly what you're meant to do, and you carry that confidence forward, it doesn't matter if you don't have the exact words. Here we are AGAIN!! And let us tell you … one god or another (MARDUK, IS IT YOU??) did not want this recording to occur, but we persevered! You’re welcome?? Esther was only slightly present in mind and body thanks to THE LAG OF JETS from her recent travels, but thankfully Kristin was there to steer us all straight into the loving arms of … YOU’LL SEE. Here you’ll find our second ever duel (Creation Myths!) featuring a sacrificial muskrat versus a Salty Mama with a side of Double God. Listen for the moment where jet-lagged Esther almost collapses under the weight of the Sumerian retelling (“Is … Earth here yet?”). Other nuggets: we provide some free (for now! WINK) advice to the otherwise-perfect Tom Hanks, Kristin recklessly invents a new guest star for our night terrors (“It’s the American way!”), and Esther does not tell you as much about her cross-country trip so much as she tries, kinda fruitlessly, to describe how red-eye flights work. Takeaway quote: “Toby take the wheel!” Take home question: How much demented mucus does it take for one’s system to push out a mighty storm demon? Highlights: + Some real fun terrible adult conversations: Surprise dental work! + TAXES! The Chicago city sticker system being a huge racket! Donkey Kong ruining cars with bananas and driving Kristin out of the midwest! + Did we forget to introduce ourselves? Is anyone on this podcast named Rhonda? + Praise be to the sacrificial muskrat! And his tiny mud-filled paw! + “I feel like it’s going to have corn in it” Always applicable, always appropriate + DAAAAAAMN, Kina! Kingu, king-WHO? + #JUSTICEFORTIAMAT + This may be the first mention of MONOBRAIN, but is definitely not the last

“We’re not going to change the purity of the game. We’re just going to enhance the experience in a way bigger than we ever imagined.” (click to tweet) Welcome back to Verizon Ventures. On today’s episode, we are discussing the rise of sporting technologies that enrich the fan experience. From VR headsets to live-streaming in multiple languages, there are many different ways in which tech can be integrated into our sports-viewing paradigm. Joining us are the talented: LJ Rader, Product Manager at Verizon Jeff Angus, Head of Marketing at Verizon Ventures portfolio company, Playsight “If you have a Head of Innovation, you’re doing it wrong. Innovation is a department.” (click to tweet) Highlights Some innovation comes off as gimmick-y Innovation is a department, not a single person effort Look at PlaySight’s SmartCourt as an example of how innovation intended for one purpose (player development) can be reappropriated for another purpose (live-streaming) There’s a trend in sports broadcasting where spectators harness live-streaming platforms like Facebook Live to commentate Real Madrid is the most valuable sports team in the world; not because of their fans in Madrid, but because of their fans all over the world It’s getting increasingly more expensive to attend live sporting events There is still a long way to go with VR before you feel completely in the venue The social component of VR will make you able to sit amongst your friends’ avatars Look to the chat logs of sporting event live-streams to see the power of social in fan experience Broadcast technologies will empower viewers to choose commentator of genre choice (ex: funny vs. tactical/strategic) “When the technology catches up to the in-person venue experience, that’s when it gets exciting.” (click to tweet) Resources PlaySight SmartCourt https://www.playsight.com/ Full Show Notes at: VerizonVentures.com/podcast
