First, apologies that there is no week 1. Recently I hosted a study of the book From Object to Icon, by Andrew Williams. Andrew Williams is an Orthodox Christian, and a graduate of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, and Oxford University, and the host of the podcast "Finding the Freedom to Live in the Image of God." Williams says, "The icon is central in our relationship with God; it is a source of healing and sanctification, and through it we can transcend the 'Things and facts of an objectivized and naturalized world.'" He also points out that veneration of an icon is a way of actively participating in the divine graces of God. Icons are not limited to just the wood and paint, but include each of us made in the image of God. Veneration, therefore, is not just kissing a painting, but is a way of seeing(really a way of living in) all of creation. As Christians, we ought to see all creation, especially its people, iconographically. The counterpart is to see the world pornographically. This certainly includes sexual pornography, but is also in fact its own way of living, that being a way that fails both to see others and to allow ones self to be seen in the healing and transformative way that each of us need. So then, in our study, we will explore the following big ideas: What are the spiritual realities present in the icon, and in the incredibly powerful spiritual encounter that takes place every time we practice veneration? What is pornography and what does it mean to see the world through this lens? How ought we to see people? How ought we allow ourselves to be seen, and why? What is a proper response to pornography(sexual imagery, internet pornography, etc)? For us in the care of children, how ought we to speak to our children about sex, pornography, the unforgiving risks of the internet, and the proper way to see themselves and others? William's writing is beautiful and compelling, just as the icons which have so captivated his vision, and sustained our faith. I encourage you to join me in reading through his work, and through our conversations, hopefully connect more deeply with each other. I hope you get to read along! We begin the interview by exploring Mark's work as a translator and the artfulness of translation by grounding our discussion in one of his books, Apocalypse: The Book of Revelation, originally written in Greek. Within minutes, Mark states that religion fulfills one or two purposes: to control or to transform – our conversation explores the latter. We discuss the psychedelic nature of the Book of Revelation, the nuances of translation, living texts, Mark's unpublished translation of the entire new testament, modern Christianity, defining “truth” (as in, “the way, the truth, and the life”) …” – a/letheia: non/forgetting, the Answer to Job found in The Book of Revelation, the conflict in dualism, reconciling dualism, critique of the institutional church, Dionysus and Christ, love, ritual, and more. BIO: Born in Richmond, VA (1954) and raised outside Washington DC, Arey converted to Orthodox Christianity from the Episcopal Church when he was 22 years old. He graduated in 1975 from the University of Maryland (cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) with a BA in Latin Language and Literature. (with distinction) and was subsequently ordained both deacon and presbyter in October 1979. In the intervening 34 years, Arey served six parishes (last as interim Dean of the Archdiocesan Cathedral in New York City), as well as parishes in Baltimore, MD, New Haven, CT, Nashville, TN (twice), Frederick, MD and New York City. In 2006 he was awarded the rank of Economos and in 2007 that of Protopresbyter. In 2013, he asked to return to the ranks of the laity in order to marry, and did so, marrying Lyn Cameron Hayes on December 9, 2013. Arey has one grown daughter, Zoë Arey, who lives in New York City with her three daughters, Lillian, Beatrice, and Evelyn. IN 2014, Arey was invited to be Executive Director of The Hellenic Initiative, Inc. (https://www.thehellenicinitiative.org), a global venture philanthropy organization that does economic development in Greece. Gluttony, sloth, dejection, pride… these are just some of the vices that can hijack our thoughts and poison our souls. On this week’s podcast, Cynthia speaks with Fr. Joseph Longofono, Ph.D. about ways to heal and overcome our negative thoughts using tools from from the toolboxes of both mental health professionals and the Church Fathers. Father Joseph Longofono is both a priest and a licensed clinical psychologist who currently serves as pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church in Topeka, Kansas. Fr Joseph holds a B.S. in Psychology from Trinity College (1979) and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Case Western Reserve University (1983, 1985). Following a year at St Raphael Hospital, New Haven, Ct, Fr Joseph was commissioned in the US Air Force, where he spent 22 years, half on active duty and half as a reservist. His duties as a clinical psychologist included testing, psychotherapy, crisis intervention, security clearance determinations, consultation with military commanders, child advocacy, clinical supervision and health psychology (e.g., tobacco cessation, sleep hygiene, and anger and stress management). He retired in 2009 with the rank of Colonel. While stationed in Greece in the late 1980s, Fr Joseph was fascinated by Orthodoxy, and strove to learn more about the ancient Christian faith. He was received into the Orthodox Church in 1991. After he resigned his active duty commission in 1994, he received a blessing to attend seminary from Metropolitan Philip of the Antiochian Archdiocese. Fr Joseph attended Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, from which he graduated in 1997. After his ordination to the priesthood in 1996, he served parishes in the Antiochian Archdiocese while working also as a reservist psychologist. Fr Joseph’s life took an unexpected turn in late 2001, when he was involuntarily returned to active duty for one year after the 9/11 bombings. He temporarily left his parish in Danbury, CT to serve his country again on a full time basis, and was stationed in Washington, D.C., at Bolling Air Force Base. His duties there included those mentioned above, as well as counseling military members and family members affected by the Pentagon bombing. In November of 2002, Fr Joseph returned to full time parish ministry, while continuing to serve as a reservist psychologist until his retirement from the military. He has also held part time positions as a psychologist in the civilian world. Fr Joseph has brought together the fruits of his training and experience in psychology and theology to give retreats and lectures to both Orthodox and Catholic audiences. He also has explored the connection between military life and Orthodox Christianity, especially as it pertains to Orthodox military saints. He is very much interested in investigating the connections between the healing of minds as practiced by mental health professionals, and the healing of souls as is seen in patristic literature and the lives of the church fathers. He recently completed an interview with Cynthia Damaskos on the My Beautiful Lent website regarding examination of thoughts from the cognitive and patristic perspectives.
