10-December-1941. While serving as a midshipman aboard the Royal Navy Battlecruiser HMS Repulse, Midshipman Robert Ian Davies MID participated in the first major naval engagement of the Pacific Campaign. We delve into the remarkable story of Midshipman Robert Ian Davies and his role in the sinking of the British battleships HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse during the Second World War. Despite limited firsthand accounts of Davies' actions, his bravery and leadership caught the attention of his superiors, leading to his nomination for higher recognition. We explore the Valour Inquiry and the challenges faced in honouring Davies' gallantry. While the Tribunal ruled against awarding him the Victoria Cross, the testimonies of respected naval officers shed light on his courageous actions. We also reflect on the fate of the sunken ships and the unfortunate illegal salvage activities that have disturbed their resting places. Join us as we uncover the life, service, and legacy of Midshipman Robert Ian Davies, a symbol of sacrifice and resilience during a tumultuous time in history. Links: Go to episode page (with resources) Subscribe to Sigma Nutrition Premium Receive our free weekly emails Introduction: Discordance between low-density lipoprotein particle (LDL-p) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) occurs when the levels of these two biomarkers do not match up as expected. Discordance between Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is similar, except rather than counting just LDL particles, ApoB is a measure of the numbers of lipoproteins that have an ApoB attached. Discordance between ApoB and LDL-C can lead to either an underestimate or overestimate of ASCVD risk. And therefore there may be important implications for someone who does have discordance. Additionally, it is such cases that suggest that a measurement of ApoB may provide additional information beyond traditional lipid measures in assessing a person's cardiovascular risk. Recent work from researchers at Liverpool John Moores University has investigated whether discordance is associated with certain dietary patterns. In this episode, one of the researchers involved, Dr. Ian Davies, is on the podcast to discuss this work in addition to wider questions in the diet-lipids-CVD field that remain to be answered.

On Wednesday 10 November at County Hall in London RNIB held the ‘See the Future Differently' summit bringing a number of key people from across health care and the sight loss sector together to talk about the future of eye care and support for blind and partially sighted people. During the summit there were three main discussion streams focusing on: No Diagnosis Without Support - examining the challenges of ensuring patients get the help they need at national and regional levels Mental Health and Wellbeing - exploring the link between physical and mental health And finally Prevention, Cures and Treatments - focusing on the latest research and the ways of turning innovation into patient applications. Connect Radio's Toby Davey was at the ‘See the Future Differently' summit catching up with some of the key speakers and delegates and Toby caught up with Ian Davies, Master of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers. Ian began by giving Toby a brief background to the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, their 400 year history, the role they play in bringing people together to raise awareness of sight loss to a wide range of people such as the high costs of eye health care, the issues around the low levels of blind and partially sighted people in employment and working with others to try and resolve some of these issues. Ian also reflects on how the summit went, the strong feeling for change and coming together across the sector and what he will be taking back to the members of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers. For more details about the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, do visit their website - https://www.spectaclemakers.com More information about the outcomes of the ‘See the Future Differently' summit will be posted on the RNIB website in the coming weeks. After receiving loads of my old podcasts from listeners Ian Davies and Vincent Boucher for which I will always be in your debt, lads, I have decided to alternate my Social Media episodes with episodes from one or other of my earlier podcasts from around 2013/14. I was very disappointed with my last podcast, but am going to carry on, but with more humour and less angst. They will get better, but, hopefully, will also be thought provoking. Please do not listen to any of my (Uncle Arthur) podcasts if you are easily offended. They are very offensive. You have been warned.
Our special guest this episode is Ian Davies of Atlantic Mavericks. Ian is part of a four man crew looking to cross the Atlantic in December of 2019 as part of TWAC. Fundraising, duck races, tips for people who do donate to the cause, and so much more! Music from bensound.com
The knowledge and effort required for building a fully functional web application has grown at an accelerated rate over the past several years. This introduces a barrier to entry that excludes large numbers of people who could otherwise be producing valuable and interesting services. To make the onramp easier Meredydd Luff and Ian Davies created Anvil, a platform for full stack web development in pure Python. In this episode Meredydd explains how the Anvil platform is built and how you can use it to build and deploy your own projects. He also shares some examples of people who were able to create profitable businesses themselves because of the reduced complexity. It was interesting to get Meredydd's perspective on the state of the industry for web development and hear his vision of how Anvil is working to make it available for everyone.

Spring is right around the corner. And if you're going to be birding, you might as well be eBirding. You should definitely be eBirding on May 5th, eBird’s annual Global Big Day. Last year birders recorded more than 6600 species from 160 different countries on one day. eBird’s Project Coordinator Ian Davies joins host Nate Swick to talk about the Global Big Day initiative. Also, radar ornithologist Kyle Horton talks about Cornell’s Birdcast project, which recently launched live migration maps, an amazing tool to help birders maximize their opportunities to see great birds this spring. Nate is back in the driver's seat to talk about warbler obsession, Florida birding, and birds at airports. You can help us out by participating on our listener demographic survey here. Ian Davies is a guy who I met around 18 months ago, and I instantly recognised him as someone who is as passionate about helping people overcome their problems as I am. It’s one of the reasons why we quickly became friends. As soon as you talk to Ian you can tell he knows his stuff and the fact that his knowledge comes not just from textbooks but through years of practical experience makes his advice even more powerful. Ian is a Biomechanics Coach and specialises in injury rehabilitation and prevention. Ian has his own clinic in Berkshire where he see’s people from all different walks of life from professional athletes to lawyers and school teachers and helps them correct their imbalances, return from injury or simply bulletproof themselves from future pain and discomfort. . I have wanted to get Ian on the show for a while because I think it’s extremely important for people to hear what he has to say about why injuries occur and what you can do to get to the root of your injury problems and correct them should you have any. In this episode we cover: Ian’s journey into the Injury and Rehab world What makes his programs and structure different to all the others out there The most common injuries he sees Why people are getting more and more injuries The assessment he uses to evaluate clients What people need to do to avoid injuries Why having a clean diet is important when rehabbing an injury & much much more. It’s always fun for me to get friends on my show who I can personally trust because firstly it means I know you guys are going to get tremendous value out of the episode, and secondly it’s great for me to catch up with someone and be able to give you guys free information whilst doing so. This was a really fun episode to shoot and Ian gives out lots of quality information that you can go away and put into practice. You can find Ian here: www.InjuryClinicBerkshire.com Enjoy the show and as always don’t forget to share it with your friends and family, as well as writing a review on itunes.
