Black belt,Ayanah Hill is a white belt who refused to give up until she became champion. Ayanah is an 11 year old that will be starting 6th grade in the fall of 2020. The daughter of Carl and Sarah Hill, Ayanah is a State/National/International Karate Champion, who trains under Sensi Jeff Kohn at North Shore Dojo in Glenview, IL. She has been training since the age of 5 years old and received her black belt at the age of 10. In addition to Karate, Ayanah also enjoys swimming, reading, drawing, and gaming. Ayanah aspires to one day be a Karate World Champion and an action movie star! And by the way is a Zambian American who loves her heritage.

In this inspirational episode from Enduring Health, Dr Shan Hussain speaks with James Wells about his amazing life journey and the links between his approach to martial arts and dominating cancer. James Wells, international karate athlete and two-time cancer survivor has competed for major titles both domestically and overseas since he was a teenager, winning silverware at world level. Before his exploits in business or his successes as an athlete and fighter, James is proud most of all to call himself a survivor.  James describes how he defied the odds, regaining his physical prowess and representing his country again less than 18 months later.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Karate is a martial art that requires not just physical strength but also emotional and mental strength. The discipline required is huge and demands considerable mental fortitude.   Karate is an individual sport, in a competition fight it’s just you and the man opposite you. There are a number of variables which need to be solved and this requires mental strength.   There’s a lot to gain from winning, a lot to learn from defeat Being taught to review every  performance, look back, evaluate and rectify what you’ve done wrong and make sure it doesn’t happen again is vitally important. There is a stigma attached to failure and defeat and as a result we miss out on learning.   You are influenced by the people that surround you. Character in a person is everything and you need people with strength of character around you when you are going through cancer.   Support from family and friends is essential when fighting cancer and as an athlete support is vital to good performance. The best athletes have amazing support networks and family. Mental fortitude and having something to live for makes a huge difference family and friends provide the strength and make it possible to look forward.   It’s important to set short term and long term goals. Write them down so they are there and can be ticked off clearly showing progress. People can forget how to grow and  don’t acknowledge the stimulus around them or take on board its role in their growth.   Competing with cancer is a movement with the long term goal of implementing exercise structures  for cancer patients. What a pleasure it was to chat with world-champion martial artist, actor and instructor Zara Phythian, who has been kicking ass ever since her first karate lesson at the age of seven. Now, she is a role model and inspiration to hundreds of young martial artists, who flock to her Personal Best Academy in the UK to learn self-defence. Her varied film credits include work with top UK martial artists like Joey Ansah and Mark Strange in Underground (2007), thrillers like The Hike (2011), and fighting Van Damme in Alien Uprising (2012). In 2015, she was cast as the Brunette Zealot in the Marvel superhero film Doctor Strange (2016), alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton and Mads Mikkelsen, and fellow British martial arts stars Scott Adkins and Katrina Durden. Her new films include Knights of the Damned and Cannibals and Carpet Fitters. In this episode, you will hear about how the 13-time World Sports Martial Art Champion discovered her passion for martial arts, acquiring her first black belt at the age of 12, running her own classes at 16, and being the first British person to be inducted into the International Karate and Kickboxing Hall of Fame at the age of 21. We discuss the time Van Damme had to jump start her car, what it's like being a female martial arts instructor in a male-dominated industry, and her top-secret Wing Chun film project with Grandmaster Samuel Kwok.
