In this episode, Danny Hurst sits down to chat with British comedian and author Jeff Green. He was raised in Chester and found his comedy feet in Manchester and London. He now lives and performs in Australia. Jeff worked hard and found fame; it was not unusual for him to do 5 shows a night. He once played The Rovers Return and learned his craft alongside Suzy Eddie Izzard. Danny and Jeff swap stories, including dying at the Bearcat and performing while IRA bombs were going off. KEY TAKEAWAYS In the 80s, Australians and New Zealanders came to the UK bought a 2nd hand camper and toured the UK. Jeff learnt how to do stand up alongside Suzy Eddie Izzard. For 20 years, Jeff did 5 gigs a night. Danny did 3 a night. Jeff won Comedy Store New Comic of the Year. For some gigs, comics had to walk through the audience to get to the stage, being heckled all the way. Comedy is in the blood in the UK, so many members of the public have a quick wit. When a comedian is funny between jokes they are usually very successful. The best comics take risks and break the mould. Many of them also don´t care and say what they want if they think it is funny. Being a comic in Australia is tough, every gig is an overnighter. The audience is calmer but easily offended. Australians like stories rather than one-liners Irish comics had it really rough during the 80s and 90s. BEST MOMENTS “I was getting standing ovations in London and being booed in Melbourne.”” “I was at Eddie´s first ever gig when he performed in a dress.” “We've got our own Susan Boyle in Dave Jones.” “You'd probably make the same money in 89 that you're that you're making in 2025.” “That's the beauty of comedy, you've got everyone in it, from top heart consultants to forklift truck drivers.” “Australian audiences are a lot softer than British audiences.” “I made a lot of mistakes in London; I clearly pissed a lot of people off.” “He said “it´s a homage Jeff”, which is a posh way of saying “I´ve stolen it” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.facebook.com/@comedianjeffgreen https://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/Jeff-Green/author/B0034PJJFA HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. The tenor Russell Watson's remarkable career took him from playing from working mens clubs in Salford to performing at the Vatican. But his life hasn't been completely charmed - he discusses the brain tumour that threatened his life as well as his voice and how he found his way back to centre stage.Jackie Kay is one of the UK's most lauded poets who turned to writing as a child as a sanctuary from the difficulties of life as an adopted, if much loved, half-Nigerian child in Scotland. A new BBC One documentary tells her story "In Her Own Words"; we'll be asking why she wanted to do that. Doctor-turned-comedian-turned-author Adam Kay's first book This Is Going To Hurt sold over 3 million copies and was adapted into a multi award-winning TV series. Now he's taken another career turn into children's fiction with a new character – Dexter Procter, the ten year old doctor. As an actress Deborah McAndrew played Angie Freeman on Coronation Street in the 1990s. She left the Rovers Return behind long ago for a career as a writer and her latest play tells the story of the night an Unidentified Flying Object landed near Stoke-on-Trent's Bentilee housing estate. The show draws on multiple eyewitness accounts from the time to create a warm and funny depiction of an extraordinary event happening to very ordinary people. Plus music from The Lemon Twigs's latest album A Dream Is All We Know. Presented by Nihal Arthanayake Produced by Olive Clancy

It was another frustrating afternoon for Hornets' fans at Vicarage Road, as an improved second half display wasn't enough to force a win against Blackburn. Mike, Jon and Jas gathered after the game to discuss a fixture that saw the long awaited return of Tom Cleverley, Ken Sema and Imaran Louza, with all of the returnees getting the FTRE treatment, along with the rest of the misfiring squad. There is also a look ahead to Burnely, as well as a look back to a previous classic encounter with the the Clarets. Plus a rewind interview from 2011 when the boys talked to then Assistant Manager Sean Dyche and goalkeeper coach Alec Chamberlain. It's another draw. It's another From the Rookery End podcast. Sky's Ian King discusses a jump for Meta's shares after the social media company reported better than expected earnings. He speaks to the chair of the Treasury Select Committee about the government's new Economic Crime Plan. And Heineken strikes a deal with Emmerdale and Coronation Street for its non-alcoholic beers to be served in the Woolpack and Rovers Return.
From its humble beginnings as a row of flimsy wooden house fronts crammed into a tiny Granada studio to the vast expanse used today at MediaCity, Coronation Street has changed an awful lot in the past sixty years. The row of terraced houses with a shop at one end and the Rovers Return at the other is just as recognisable as ever, but beyond that, the street is worlds away from what the show runners could have ever conceived of back in 1960. In this discussion, we chat about the evolution of the external sets over the years, tracking the buildings that came and went, roads that were lengthened and (in the case of Rosamund Street) massively shortened, another changes that viewers have seen come and go. If you'd like to see some pictures to go along with this discussion, take a look at some of the ones we used as reference here: shorturl.at/erDP3

Republic of Ireland midfielder Jack Byrne chats to Raf Diallo and Conor Neville about returning to Shamrock Rovers, APOEL in Cyprus, what he has made of Stephen Kenny's Ireland from afar and memories of interacting with Sergio Aguero as a Manchester City academy player.
A resurgent Blackburn Rovers came to Dean Court full of confidence after their incredible run of games, and they continued that form thanks to a goal either side of half time. Indeed, a dispirited AFC Bournemouth failed to make inroads against a well drilled and well-organised Tony Mowbray team - and this left the Cherries just three points clear of third - ouch! Sam, Jeff, Tigz, Tom, and Neil get together to work out the hows, what’s and why’s - as, despite the 2-0 home defeat, it was the manner of the performance that was more concerning, with a lack of intensity and flair which has served us so well for large parts of the season. Just what went so wrong? Thank you to everyone who has contributed to all our platforms. Queen Elizabeth II visited the set of Coronation Street in London on July 8 to mark the 60th birthday of the TV soap opera. The monarch was all smiles as she walked along the cobbled street. She also visited a studio. Inside the studio, the crew and cast film the interior of the Rovers Return pub. It was the second time the queen, 95, has visited the set of “Corrie.” The first time was in the early 1980s, at the show's original studios in Manchester. She told the cast it was “really marvelous you've been able to carry on” during the pandemic. She also took time to chat to backstage staff including writers, camera operators, set designers and sound engineers. The soap opera focuses on the lives of residents of Weatherfield, a fictional town in northern England. Coronation Street is the world's longest-running TV drama series. No, we don't want Alex Neil out. Yes, we've criticised him, how could we not after that? We also discussed transfer policy, those at the top of the club and much, much more. We also answered some listener questions because surprisingly after a defeat there was a lot of them as well as a few other bits and bobs. Not a "short midweek episode". From Central Perk cafe in Friends, to Corrie's Rovers Return, building up a memorable environment is essential in storytelling. Our own lives and emotions are heavily influenced by the places we visit, so it stands to reason that location affects our characters' lives too. This episode delves into the often unseen art of Wayfinding. Alison Richings from Endpoint explains the impact a poorly laid out building or space can have on our mood, the benefits and risks of familiar locations, and proves that wayfinding is about a lot more than just signs!

After fixing a sound clip I thought was lost, I present to you the brilliant Tori Hargreaves (@torihargreavesuk) , who I caught up with in Central London in November 2019. We talked about training together, Canteen Chips, Blood Brothers, Bad Girls, the joys of working on New musicals, her new found love for teaching, a longing to be serving pints behind the bar in the Rovers Return, and her long overdue entrance into Strictly Come Dancing.......At the time of recording, Tori was starring in Soho Cinders at the Charing Cross Theatre. We've got another early podcast for you this week, covering the four episodes between the 6th and the 8th August. What great episodes they were, though! If you've listened to the podcast for any length of time, you'll know what big fans of Jenny Connor we are, so to have her and Johnny become owners of the Rovers Return this week was pretty much a dream come true for us. Not only that, but we've also been very much enjoying Abi recently, so it was great to see her get more time in the spotlight this week, as well as other favourites like Gemma, Henry and Imran - top stuff! After Street Talk, we're excited to be joined once again by the newly crowned Queen of the Rovers, Sally Ann Matthews, who chats to us about how she feels taking on such an iconic role, as well as sharing her thoughts on Johnny's recent behaviour and old vs. new Corrie. That's followed by The Kabin, where we tell you everything you need to know about the upcoming cast vs fans quiz in Manchester later this month, and we finish off the podcast with various listeners' thoughts on the Craig/Bethany/Kayla storyline in the feedback section. Street Talk - 00:08:44 Interview: Sally Ann Matthews - 01:26:45 The Kabin - 01:44:47 Listener Feedback - 02:02:41
Michelle Collins must have one of the most recognisable faces in the UK as over the last 30 years she’s had long, prominent and starring roles in two of the nation’s favourite soaps – AND with some of the juiciest story lines. First she was stalking the Square in EastEnders as bad girl Cindy Beale and then she was conquering the cobbles in Coronation Street as Stella Price, landlady of the Rovers Return. However, she’s also done a plethora of other TV, film and theatrical work including baring ‘nearly’ all in Calendar Girls on the West End, drinking elephant urine with Bear Grylls, time travel with Doctor Who and she’s even been running her own production company working with Jo Brand and Sheridan Smith. Michelle talks to Caroline and Claire about being turned down by half a dozen drama schools as a teen but persevering, working hard and rising to become one of the most successful actresses on the British screen. Listen to her fascinating story and excellent advice on this week’s unmissable Brits in the Wood podcast. Welcome to the second Coaxial podcast, with Gareth Kavanagh and Christian Cawley. This week, we chat about the changing faces and fortunes of ITV's pair of premium soap operas, Coronation Street and Emmerdale (Farm). Are the glory days of both soaps now long-since past? Has Emmerdale found itself accidentally socially relevant simply by being set in the countryside? And do the toilets in the Rovers Return really lead into Ken Barlow's sitting room?
British TV loses another legend with the sad passing of Paul Shane; Kelly Brook has been lax with her parking documents; and the Rovers Return is finally reopening.
Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the actress Julie Goodyear. For a quarter of a century her Coronation Street character Bet Lynch set the gold plated standard for big, brassy, back chatting blondes. Behind the bar of the Rovers Return her bosom swathed in leopard-print and her head piled high with platinum curls she was Manchester's answer to Mae West. Her MBE was awarded for her services to drama - and when she left the series in 1995, her departure pulled in 19 million viewers.Yet whatever the scriptwriters came up with it was never as dramatic as the life she's lived beyond The Street. She got pregnant at 17, her second husband abandoned her for their best man, and in 1979 she was diagnosed with cancer and told she'd a year to live. She's now married to her fourth husband. She says, "If anyone should be interested in an epitaph for my life, I would like them to consider, 'At least she tried."Producer: Cathy Drysdale.

Kirsty Young's castaway is the veteran Coronation Street actress Betty Driver. For more than forty years she's been pulling pints and dishing up her hot-pot in the Rovers Return. But her career in showbusiness started decades before she took up residence on Britain's most famous street. She was a child when her mother put her on the stage and she toured the country with an act that showcased her stunning singing voice - it brought success but not happiness. "I did it for over twenty years," she says, "and hated every day of it." Although she has been working now for an incredible 80 years, she says: "I just love work and I will never retire. They'll have to shoot me to get rid of me!"Producer: Leanne Buckle.
