Jon Hare is the co-founder of legendary game studio, Sensible Software, and was behind a host of global best-selling games, such as Sensible World of Soccer, Cannon Fodder, Mega Lo Mania and Sensible Golf. Jon's career as a creative director and game publisher stretches from the 1980s through to today, and is currently launching Sociable Soccer 25. We cover a lot of ground in this interview, from how he found his way into the industry, through to developing hit games and navigating the challenges of the games industry. We also discuss gaming music at length, including insights into working with gaming music legends Richard Joseph and Martin Gallway, and making music with his own group, The Sensible Band. Jon also offers advice to aspiring games developers and gives his thoughts on channelling creativity. It's an epic interview!

We're looking back at how video games have changed how fans engage with football and the titles that influenced the industry and our relationship with the sport. Our guest is Richard Moss, the author of the recently released 'A Tale of Two Halves—the History of Football Video Games 1982-2010'. Richard goes back to discuss the creation of these iconic games, what made them so groundbreaking and their influence on football itself. Getting discussed on the show are... Painstakingly researched and written by football-obsessed writer and experienced game journalist, historian, and documentarian Richard Moss – author of Bitmap's own The Secret History of Mac Gaming – A Tale of Two Halves: The History Of Football Video Games stays keenly on the ball as it shares the rich and influential history of video game football – or 'soccer', for our American readers – striving to understand the very best the genre has to offer; and those releases that go a little wide of their target. A Tale of Two Halves takes you on a fascinating journey from the very first examples of the form all the way through to the genre's 2000s' heyday. It hits the back of the net with expert analysis of over 400 football games, including Sensible Soccer, Kick Off, Match Day, FIFA, Pro Evolution Soccer, This Is Football, Championship Manager, Premier Manager, and both old-school and new-school Football Manager. Gathered together in a single volume, that remarkable spread of releases presents a surprising variety of interpretations of the beautiful game, showcasing one of the medium's most creative, beguiling realms. A Tale of Two Halves primarily focuses on footy gaming's formative years – meaning from around 1980 to 2010 – and carefully divides the genre into two distinct halves, taking a considered look at each. As such, the first half is dominated by the fast and simple 2D action of icons like Kick Off, International Soccer, and Nintendo's Soccer. Then, following the half-time whistle, it turns its attention to the increasingly realistic 3D outings defined by icons like FIFA, Pro Evo, and Virtua Striker. Across its 628 pages, A Tale of Two Halves also features a foreword by legendary commentator Clive Tyldesley, hundreds of meticulously realised screenshots, and 13 interviews with pioneering football game developers. Inside you'll also find a series of illustrations from James Reynolds' 'Unlicensed FC' project – which celebrates Pro Evo's unusual takes on players' real names – as well as perfectly pitched pixel art from the team at 8-Bit Football. Numerous gaming platforms are covered, from the Atari 2600 and C64 to the Collecovison, via the Amiga line, PlayStation 1, Xbox 360, Arcades, and many more. Rudolf Thomas Inderst is a professor of Game Design with a focus on Digital Game Studies at the IU International University of Applied Science, department lead for Games at Swiss culture magazine Titel kulturmagazin, radio host of “Replay Value”, editor of “DiGRA D-A-CH Game Studies Watchlist”, a weekly messenger newsletter about Game Culture and curator of @gamestudies at tiktok. Ollie Houston Blunn - aka Blunners - is one of the team behind the Retro Gaming Revival YouTube channel and a regular presenter on the Total Evercade livestream. He shares his love of Evercade, his strange affection for Foxyland, and what Blaze needs to do next to keep the fanbase happy and ensure it continues to grow. As a grassroots football club chairman, we talk about the absence of decent football games on Evercade, Sensible Soccer aside, and what he'd like to see brought to the platform. Blunners is also a big Nintendo fan and talks about his collection, including his museum piece Virtual Boy, which he claims was ahead of its time.
In case you hadn't noticed, there's another Evercade podcast out there: Total Evercade, which airs every other Monday evening at 8pm UK time. Here we catch up with one of the regular presenters, Oliver Barnett, to explain what it's all about and they have doubled down on the livestream experience for Evercade fans. We also hear about Olly's love of Xeno Crisis, why he plays Sensible Soccer every Christmas (even though he's not a football fan) and get his reaction to upcoming releases from Blaze Entertainment. Phil also pitches a couple of marketing ideas to Olly, because apparently Blaze bigwigs listen ;-) There's also a few references to Olly's collaborator, and head admin for the Evercade Hangout, Ryan Andrews - who appears on episode 5 of Retro Titans, if you want to check that out before or after listening to Olly.
Stoo Cambridge, the legendary artist behind Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder, sits down with Boat to chat about his computing history and career at Kickstart Amiga Expo!

Fresh from a mid-season break, we talk to gaming journalist and YouTuber Andi Hamilton and get his take on the latest Evarcade news, the growth of retro gaming and his love for Duke Nukem, Street Fighter and Sensible Soccer. As usual we have the Desert Island Carts feature, where Andi tells us his choice of device, carts and music to take away on a desert Island. Do make sure you subscribe to Retro Titans to never miss an episode and give us a review, if you have a moment to spare.

The secret war against drugs’. This week Eddie and Jay take a look at a whopping FOUR games!Originally planned to be a Portal 1 (61) and Portal 2 (96) Special, it quickly became apparent that there wasn't an hours worth of content, so like all professional athletes we called an audible and threw Sensible Soccer (51) and Sensible World of Soccer (44) into the mix too! What ties these four games together I hear you ask? Well, it's the complete indifference one half of the BLG team has toward them respectively. As a little Kings Coronation Bank Holiday treat, we've even thrown in a rant about quite possibly the worst football game ever made, and the added danger that we may well get sued over it...Enjoy! We introduce our newest member of the Sega Mania mag/pod crew this episode, as Tom joins in the madness that is quickly becoming the messiest ranking of Mega Drive games in existence (as well as the best). We're still going through Issue 4's games (from 1993), laying down judgement almighty upon Jungle Strike, FIFA International Soccer, Sensible Soccer, TMHT: The Hyperstone Heist, Bubsy In: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind, and Shining Force. We have a letter from a weasel that asks us about games we've recently completed, movies we've watched, and more! Don't forget to send your questions to podcast@sega-mania.com if you want to get involved and be our mate. 00:00 - Willington Day, our favourite seasons, and the number five. 03:46 - "You couldn't read it". 07:04 - Super Arcade Football is from OutOfTheBit - of Super Arcade Racing (as heard on Ep77) fame - and it's a delightful “jumpers for goal posts” game that feels like a spin on Sensible Soccer, but given a modern fit and finish. 28:57 - WizKids's latest is Greece Lightning, which is somewhat of a racing board game simulation of Wacky Races in that it requires deviousness, cunning, and a little bit of luck. 40:43 - We've been chomping through Midnight Mass, which has a Jamesian “pleasing terror” to it, and is, in many ways, more unsettling than Midsommar. Perfect for a bit of Hallowe'en spookin'. All that, and some unacknowledged hiccups, with Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Oh and hey! Give our Spotify Playlist set a go if you're after something else to listen to after this episode. Lots of good stuff in there. Links to where you can find us - StayingInPodcast.com Note: sometimes we'll have been sent a review copy of the thing we're talking about on the podcast. It doesn't skew how we think about that thing, and we don't receive compensation for anything we discuss, but we thought you might like to know this is the case.
Pause musicale : Dreams Come True - Tsugino Seno! Extra special guest Jon Hare joins regular panellist Dan Brigham and perennial host Michael Bailey for The Athletic's Norwich City podcast. Ben Gibson's injury is a big blow to the club's defence, but it's almost a blessing that it didn't happen earlier in the season. We also talk Sensible Soccer, of course, and consider how our internationals will fare in the upcoming fixtures. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

.¿Sobremesa o portátil?, ¿Intel o AMD?, ¿Nvidia o AMD?, ¿PC o Mac? ¿DDR4 a 3,2 o a 3.4? ¿Cuánto tiempo dedico a ellas?

David is - wait for it - An academic, having studied a PHD in Psychology, Director of Sensible Soccer and a Research Consultant at Manchester United Football Club. It's fair to say he is a busy man but these days his life is much less busy and much more settled than it has been in the past. As a Lancashire lad growing up in Burnley, like many lads he was an aspiring footballer. His dad managed to get him into a local Catholic school which had a good reputation for being a 'good football school' despite the fact that he wasn't Catholic at all. Actually his Dad met the headmaster of the school in the local pub (where most of us Northerners form many friendships). Back in those days football wasn't the way it is now, the money was nowhere near and they didn't offer academy places to the youth, though many clubs did have Under 16's sides and David was lucky enough to play for Burnley and Blackburn at that level. He was also offered a YTS (Youth Training Scheme for you youngsters) at Blackpool but he turned that down and stayed on at school to study A-Levels. Trying to balance a football career with full time studies didn't really work well for him and he found himself fledgling at both rather than excelling at one or the other. He had basically compromised and this was a wake up call for him. He went on to get a job in a local paint factory and then in the Warburton's bread factory (best bread ever btw - northern lasses opinion and nobody paid us to say that!) and he played football for Accrington Stanley (who are they? - another 80s reference, when did we get so old?). His friends by this point where at Uni so he was basically living the student lifestyle whilst trying to carve out a football career, again, not the best combination. What sport had done for him though was allow him to meet a load of people he probably wouldn't have otherwise met and this enabled him to get a 'proper job' in an IT firm and he stayed in this industry for about 12 years, that's where he met our Michelle - what a lucky fella! He was still paying football at this point but was approaching his 30's and realised that when football was no longer an option for him he didn't want to be stuck in that particular day job. This revelation led him to start studying coaching which then fed his interest in the psychology side of sports so he went on to study that via an Open University Course whilst he worked part time in community clubs and schools. One of these clubs at the time was of particularly interest to the academy scouts (academies now exist by this point) who came along to see the players and spotted the coach (we love this part of David's story). So he then went to work at Bury FC and met their Head of Psychology who inspired and encouraged him to go to University and finish the degree where he did his dissertation entitled Talent Development and Serial Winning (Manchester United Football Club) which ended up getting published - you might say he got noticed. After this he worked for quite a few football clubs then was poached to golf for a few years where he went on world tours and led a very busy and hectic life. Then something amazing happened, something that he describes as the best thing that ever happened happened, his son Jordi (now 7) was born and that lifestyle became unsustainable as he didn't want to be away more than he was at home. Next step, lecturing at Universities, consulting in various sports and setting up his own company www.sensiblesoccer.co.uk, a business that distributes football supplies to clubs, schools and the general public. He also became a Research Consultant at Man Utd FC which sounds like such an interesting role and involves David and therefore the club being at the forefront of sports technology - you are going to have to listen to find out more!

In this week's season finale, Edward and Ian play International Super Star Soccer Deluxe, the plucky cousin of the Winning Eleven Series of games that have long since cornered the market along with their FIFA counterparts. Much resolution is reached, too, with the definitive call on all coin tosses, Global Hypercolour kit designs and (after admittedly some initial shots are fired) signs of a rapprochement in the Sega-Nintendo console wars. Is Turkey in Africa? Would a robot that just barks out factual statements of the thing that just happened be better than Peter Drury? Will we get all the way through a podcast which isn't about Sensible Soccer without mentioning Sensible Soccer? And is the introduction of VAR to video games a good idea? The answer to several of these questions is no. Find out to which over the next pulsating, gyrating, arcade action-packed hour! Scorchio! will return with season two, The Seasoning, later this year. There’s a bunch of different ways in which you can subscribe to the 200% podcast. This week, Edward and Ian have been playing Striker on the Mega Drive, one of a number of Striker games that were available during a period of the early-to-mid-1990s now known to historians as The Striker Era.It's an all-encompassing arcade-style football game which seems to have pleased them both and brought memories of halcyon days of video gaming flooding back. Gaming histories and peccadillos are laid bare all over the place, and our heroes give due consideration to whether or not being good at video games should be considered a life skill. There's stories of a communal Sensible Soccer league that by the sounds of it could easily have gotten out of hand; FIFA 95 gets a new hole; shots are fired once again in the (previously dormant) Sega vs Nintendo console wars and - in what is rapidly becoming a semi-regular feature - Edward recounts the details of another absolute shoeing he was on the receiving end of from a 16-bit games console's 30-year old CPU.It's almost as much as the human psyche can endure, which is also the mission statement for this podcast series. And finally, a humble request. This week, Edward and Ian continue to be cockteases of the worst possible kind, playing a football game programmed by Sensible Software that isn't Sensible Soccer, while you all sit around on tenterhooks. Vinegar strokes or no, World Championship Soccer II on the Sega Mega Drive is an interesting curiosity, part fun-filled arcade romp and part calamatously shonky and infuriating missed opportunity. A slap in the face for anyone who ever thought that World Cup football might be good and pure. Can England overcome the odds at Italia 90 this time around, now that United Arab Emirates are off the menu for some completely inexplicable reason? And is a farm without a barn full of ducks even a farm at all? We find out. There’s a bunch of different ways in which you can subscribe to the 200% podcast. My guest today is Simon Byron, formerly a videogame journalist and PR person, now a co-host of videogame radio show One Life Left, Publishing Director at Curve Digital and creator of hit mobile games Bang Man and Up Down Left Right. Welcome to Outrage, Outrage, Outrage! A 5-part documentary podcast that looks into controversies in different aspects of our media. In the inaugural episode of the podcast we take a look at a little game that told us war has never been so much fun... and ruffled a few feathers along the way. CANNON FODDER. So listen in as your podcasting host chats to game producer Jon Hare and magazine editor Stuart Campbell, who tell us about the furor surrounding the game and its marketing. The game itself is a simple shooter, tasking you with controlling a small platoon across a map in order to wipe out the enemy. It’s retro gaming heaven. But it was this promotional image which caused upset when the game was released for the Commodore Amiga in 1993. The British Legion took umbrage with the use of the poppy, and tabloid The Daily Star spotted a juicy story, and poor old Jon came under fire. But if that wasn’t enough, The Star went after Amiga Power, too, due to their having the poppy (the Cannon Fodder version anyway) on the cover of the December 1993 issue. This is not the original cover, but rather the hastily altered version that publishers cobbled together to dodge the ire of the British Legion. And before we even get to all that, we take a little stroll through the annals of controversial video games past, such as Mortal Combat and Night Trap. These two games so worried people at the time of their release that congress took up the issue, ultimately resulting in the establishment of the video games ratings system. The guests Jon Hare is a legendary computer game producer, known for his time with Sensible Software, and particularly flagship games like Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder - now retro gaming classics - among many more. These days Jon is still making killer games, and you can find the Sensible Soccer revival, Sociable Soccer, here… and here… Stuart Campbell is a games designer and former journalist, who was the editor of Amiga Power at the time of Cannon Fodder’s release. He then went on to join Jon is Sensible Software, working on Cannon Fodder 2 among other titles. Stuart now writes on his political blog Wings over Scotland https://wingsoverscotland.com/ And on video games, media, politics, snacks and other things here http://wosland.podgamer.com/ OUTRAGE! OUTRAGE! OUTRAGE! In the beginning there was an explosion, that filled an impossible void. And then there were planets that defined something from the nothingness. Then came life… first minute, then large and cumbersome, and then… man. And man had to learn to survive, to make fire, to find meaning in life. And once all that was sorted out, man learned to get annoyed about stuff. So this is a podcast about some controversies… not the big stuff… not war or politics or corporate fraud or any of that… controversies you may not have even know happened, or how weird they were. So join Andy Smith on a five-part miniseries delving into four little controversies in four different aspects of our media.

(raf)
Hello. Welcome to a very special One Life Left. Why? Because -- OMG -- we're 100. Numbers aside, we've always been 'special', haven't we? And this is every bit as special as our previous, metaphorically and occasionally literally unbroadcastable hours with features, news, reviews, music and game-related nonsense aplenty. In this week's show: * The team sing! It's OK, they get that bit done with pretty early on. The cake comes later. That's not even a lie, * Superguest Jon Hare, creator of Sensible Soccer, one of the greatest videogames of all time, tells us about his new projects, * We actually play Best Worst Game, promise. Also new stuff from Dr Avatar and The Doyouinverts. Music on 100: Cruisin' Mah '95 Pimpmobile by Kulor Le Road To Bordeaux by Thomas Armstrong Facebook / Twitter / Email / Call us (details in the show). We'll see you next week and for a while after that, we hope.
