Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals
The Washington Capitals are looking to jump start their sputtering offense heading into Game 3 of their first round playoff series against the New York Rangers , and it appears coach Peter Laviolette is ready to shake up his forward lines in an effort to generate more scoring. If Thursday's practice was any indication, it seems rookie winger Ivan Miroshnichenko will slot into the lineup on the fourth line, replacing veteran grinder Nicolas Aube-Kubel on right wing. Aube-Kubel was relegated to working with the scratches after practice, a clear sign his spot is in jeopardy.Laviolette has kept his lineup intact through the first two games, both losses, but with the team now facing a pivotal Game 3 at home, the urgency to simply secure a win has reached a fever pitch. Miroshnichenko brings an intriguing mix of speed, tenacity and physicality that could provide a much-needed spark. "His speed was on display and he was tenacious all over the ice on the puck," Laviolette noted after practice. The 19-year-old rookie has seen spot duty with the Caps this season when called up from the AHL, and while throwing a young, inexperienced player into the fire in the playoffs is always a gamble, the Caps have very few options left to try and revive their scuffling offense.Captain Alex Ovechkin has yet to make an impact through two games, mustering just one shot on goal as the Panthers have made stopping him a focus. Ovechkin acknowledged something seems "a little bit off" but tried to project a calm confidence things would turn around on home ice. "We just have to calm down. Yeah, we're a young team, but we still have an experienced team, you know," he said. "We have to calm down, play simple with the puck, don't think about it too much, and it will come." Ovechkin's longtime linemate T.J. Oshie has also struggled, as the duo have combined for just two shots at even strength. With the Caps' playoff lives on the line and the series shifting back to Washington, the team will look to their captain to lead the way offensively. But Ovechkin will need help, and Miroshnichenko will have a chance to provide it and potentially give the Caps the critical victory they need to get back in the series.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Monopoly GO!Get in the game and join your friends. Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals
In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Capitals win over the Kraken. It was a slow start to the game, but the Capitals controlled the pace of the game, and the momentum was in the Capitals favor. TJ Oshie took advantage of a botched play by netminder Daccord. Connor McMichael seized the loose puck and backhanded a goal past Daccord with his second goal in as many games. Charlie Lindgren was in beast mode and the Caps walk away with two huge points. What Do the Capitals do with Ivan Miroshnichenko has now played 9 NHL games. If he plays 1 more NHL game this season, he will lose his slide eligibility and his ELC will officially begin - "burning" the first year. In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about how Alex Ovechkin has taken Ivan Miroshnichenko under his wing. Ovi says that he sees a bit of himself in Miro. When Ovi first came to the US and the Capitals, he knew little English and even lived at the GM George McPhee's house. Ovi is doing his best to help Miro feel comfortable at practice and even taking him to dinner. It's Dan's belief the Ovi is passing the torch to Miro as he sees the end of his time with the Capitals on the distant horizon. Later Dan talks about Peter Bondra's thoughts on Alex Ovechkin and if he thinks he can pass Gretzky. In the last segment Dan talks about injury questions when it comes to the Caps blue line. In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Caps rookie camp and who stood out. The Caps took turns taking shots on goaltenders Mitchell Gibson, Clay Stevenson, Garin Bjorklund and Antoine Keller. Lapierre said he was working on his skating and his overall movement this summer Iorio also looked impressive, he's skating much faster. Something he said he wanted to work on Ivan Miroshnichenko was in top form and solidified my opinion that he would very well join the capitals at some point this season. Later Dan talks about how even Tom Wilson can get insecure. Before his contract was signed this summer all the trade talk got to him, and he had to reach out to the Capitals PR and figure out what's going on. In the last segment Dan talks about the trade deadline this season. The impact it's had on previous Capitals seasons and the impact it could have on this season. The Washington Capitals who are usually in win now mode because of Alex Ovechkin, and their quest to make a push in the playoffs have depleted their pipeline or future players. But recently the Capitals have been smarter and haven't sold the farm just so they can win some games today and forget about the future. In this episode Dan Holmi gives you his draft reaction. Did the Capitals select the right player in the first round by selecting Ivan Miroshnichenko? He has a great offensive upside, but he has health issues, and his defense could be a liability. The Washington Capitals have a lot of questions to answer before Wednesday. The biggest question is who is their number one netminder going to be? The Capitals traded Vitek Vanecek to the New Jersey Devils and now they only have Ilya Samsonov on the team. The Capitals will need to swing for the fences and go after that marquee netminder. Rumors are swirling that Darcy Kuemper will be the next netminder. The Capitals have shown interest in Jake Allen and John Gibson. That Capitals don't have a lot of time to make to pull the trigger on the next number one netminder. The Capitals were busy on day two of the draft. The biggest and best selection was defenseman Ryan Chesley. He is poised to be the next big-name defender on the Capitals in years to come. Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens
Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: With all eyes intently focused on the first overall pick, the Canadiens do also hold another first round pick at 26th overall. If Montreal does go the expected route, and selects Shane Wright first overall, what should they do with their other first round pick? Scott and Laura debate the merits of selecting another centre like Owen Beck or Noah Ostlund to further improve the depth at that position. However, what if they decide to take a winger at 26th overall, such as Filip Mesar or Ivan Miroshnichenko? However, if the Canadiens do decide to take a risk and draft Juraj Slafkovsky, Scott believes drafting a centre at 26th overall is the only way forward, namely someone like the aforementioned Owen Beck. Given Montreal's needs, not grabbing a centre in the first round feels like a gigantic misstep from the Habs front office. The final hypothetical, what if the Canadiens pull off a Josh Anderson trade and move up into the top 15 of the draft? The hosts discuss the merits of drafting a high-end defensive piece and if it's needed considering the current prospect pool. Or is taking a chance on a player like Brad Lambert worth the cost of moving in the first round? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Plus, to close things out, the guys answer listener questions including if it was a fluke that seemingly more “homer run” franchise players were drafted in the first decade of the 2000s as opposed to the second, Corey's confidence in Conor Geekie's NHL projection, the absence of CHL players on Russia's WJC roster, expectations for Brock Faber at World Juniors, which pro league is best for developing forwards age twenty or older, standouts from Detroit's “army of Swedish prospects”, which NHL teams will either make or miss the playoffs in the next few years because of their prospect pool, and early picks for WJC All-Stars and leading scorers. First, Max and Corey look back at the first month of the NHL season and discuss which rookies, and high-end young players, have lived up to the hype so far, including Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond, Trevor Zegras, Bowen Byram, and others, and which ones have struggled to find their way, like Cole Caufield and Alexis Lafrenière.Then, the guys talk about Michigan's top prospect-laden lineup and discuss Kent Johnson's and Matthew Beniers' respective starts, Owen Powers and Luke Hughes leading the way from the backend, and Brendan Brisson as a potential piece in a hypothetical Jack Eichel trade between the Vegas Golden Knights and Buffalo Sabres.Plus, Corey breaks down his most recent 2022 NHL Draft rankings and talks about a slight decrease in exuberance for Shane Wright, despite maintaining his position as the presumptive No. 1 pick this summer, Tier 2 prospects like Ivan Miroshnichenko and Logan Cooley, and the extremely impressive play of JYP's Joakim Kemell to start the season in Liiga. And, to close things out, the guys open up the mailbag and take listener questions about weighing “character issues” in prospect assessments, which of the next three draft classes are the strongest, who could be the NHL's next true power forward a la Brendan Shanahan, which pandemic scouting workarounds could remain as the world begins to open back up, and if Scott Perunovich has done enough to crack the St. Louis Blues lineup.Get an annual subscription to The Athletic for just $3.99 a month when you visit http://theathletic.com/hockeyshowNOTE: This episode was recorded on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, prior to the Jack Eichel trade. Every Wednesday former NHL GM, Stanley Cup Champion and Director of Scouting with TSN, Craig Button and I explore prospects for the NHL Draft. From Top Shelf Talent to The Next Wave to Time Machine and more, the stars of tomorrow are discovered and discussed, here.
On this episode of the DraftCast, Tony is joined by Chris Peters from Hockey Sense with Chris Peters to preview Group B at the World U18's in Texas! After some general thoughts on the tournament, the pair discuss the top players and expectations for all five teams in the group. The Czech Republic roster has some sneaky good talent, especially on the back end. Headlined by Stanislav Svozil, Jiri Tichacek and David Jiricek on defense, they could be a fun team to watch. Finland is always a fun team. Tuomaala, Salminen, and Koivunen should be among their best forwards and their back end has some underrated talent in Malinen, Ervasti, and Heimosalmi. Germany has had some recent stars but is there anyone ready to take the reigns? The Russian team will be really fun with super-prospect Matvei Michkov and the recently cleared Ivan Miroshnichenko providing depth for Nikita Chibrikov and Fyodor Svechkov, The Russians will be a force to be reckoned with. The Americans are missing some key pieces and they have questions in goal but they feature young guns Rutger McGroarty, Lane Hutson, Logan Cooley, Isaac Howard, and Charlie Stramel from the NTDP U17 squad. Accompanying the young talent are Chaz Lucius, Dylan Duke, and Sasha Pastujov. The U.S. will be gunning for gold at the U18s yet again! Be sure to check out the Group A preview with Steven Ellis from the Hockey News as we go over Canada, Sweden, and the rest of the group in-depth as well! Thank you for listening!
