In this episode we'll unravel the haunting events that took place within the walls of an upscale home, belonging to a prominent family in the community in the 1930s. It was none other than the Mattson family home, set against the backdrop of the affluent Point Defiance Park District in Tacoma, Washington. Sound familiar? You might remember an eerily similar case - the kidnapping & ransom of George Weyerhaeuser. On a cold winter night just days after Christmas, what started as a peaceful evening with popcorn and root beer quickly turned into a nightmare as the youngest Mattson child was abducted at gunpoint from his own living room, sparking the oldest unsolved kidnapping case in Tacoma's history.Despite the FBI's best efforts, the mysterious kidnapper vanished without a trace, but not without leaving a bizarre ransom note behind. Though the family complied with the kidnapper's demands, Charles was never returned. Nicola was stalked by a coworker she dated. Nicola had just left an abusive partner and was living in a woman's shelter when she met her coworker. She began to notice him outside of work at places she frequented, so they became friends and then started dating. After Nicola told him she wanted to start a family, he pulled away, so she decided to end the relationship. When Nicola moved out of the shelter to continue rebuilding her life, her ex began following her and texted her non-stop. The situation escalated when he showed up at her house at all hours and threatened her friends. She finally confided in her coworkers, who advised her to call the police. Daniel is being stalked by a man he met on the dating app, Grindr. Although there was no romantic chemistry, they decided to remain friends. When Daniel was having financial problems, his new friend offered to help him out, even letting Daniel live with him to help him save money. After he moved in, Daniel was regularly questioned about his whereabouts, and his friend started drama within Daniel's friend group to isolate him. As the situation escalated, Daniel was sexually propositioned in person, over text, and through social media by his friend turned stalker. His stalker exposed himself to Daniel and played loud pornography from his room. When Daniel confronted him, he invited multiple men over and made sure Daniel could hear them having sex. Daniel left the apartment and sought support as a victim of stalking and sexual harassment. Nikki was seventeen when she met the man she would later date, have a child with, and would eventually become her stalker. During the relationship, he was controlling and abusive. Every time Nikki tried to leave, he lured her back with promises that things would get better. When she became pregnant with their child, the abuse escalated to the point that Nikki was held captive and tortured. When she was able to get help, her stalker was arrested. Nikki moved over 3000 miles away, but when he was released from jail, he found her, threatened her, and continued to stalk her. He called her work, harassed her boss, and made constant threats against her and her family. Francesca is a former bikini model who has been cyberstalked for almost twenty years. After gaining international recognition through televised bikini modeling competitions and photo shoots, an obsessed fan pretended to be Francesca to acquire candidly explicit unpublished material from her photographers. Then the fan leaked the nude photos and videos to porn websites and created fake social media profiles sending the explicit pictures and videos to Francesca's friends and family. She filed a police report against the photographer who sold her stalker the videos, but they told her this was out of their jurisdiction and refused to help. After contacting numerous attorneys with no strong results, she connected with Joey Ortega, a cyberstalking expert who began meticulously investigating, documenting, and organizing the information to build Francesa's case. Darian was stalked by a stranger he met through a random act of violence. When Darian's female friend was sexually assaulted during a night out, they left the scene, but the perpetrator followed and physically assaulted Darian. Days later, a friend of the perpetrator confronted them, saying they should die because they called the police. The man started showing up in places Darian frequented, physically and verbally attacking Darian. He did not know the identity of this man but was finally able to get a clear photo during one of his attacks, and the police were able to identify him. A fan of the documentary reached out to Collier wanting to collaborate on another documentary together. Collier was open to the idea until she began conflicting with his girlfriend at the time. After Collier departed from the project, this person reached out to his friends and family, trying to establish relationships with them. He blocked her online, but she continued to not only reach out to him but also his incarcerated father. Isis was stalked by a boyfriend she met when she was eighteen years old. Their relationship was great at first, but he became insecure and manipulated her into spending all her time with him. He threatened her, physically abused her, called her job, followed her to work, and even told her boss that he would set the store on fire. After his threats got her fired from her job, he followed her to her new one and repeated the same pattern of stalking. He even smashed the storefront window with a rock and a note saying, “it's all her fault.” He sent roses, balloons, and threatening messages and told random men to approach and harass her. Faye is being stalked by an ex-boyfriend who is obsessed with Asian women. While working out at the gym, Faye met an employee who found her personal information in the company database and sent her a Facebook friend request. Their friendship became romantic, but when she wanted to become exclusive, he ghosted her, and it turned into an on and off-again relationship. After Faye started dating a new man, her stalker repeatedly showed up at her apartment, threw water bottles at her windows, and called her non-stop for over a year. She blocked him on social media, but he created fake profiles to reach out, followed her friends and family, made cruel comments on posts, and sent her sexually explicit messages. He showed up in public places and approached Faye, so she obtained a restraining order, but it has not prevented him from continuing to stalk her. It's definitely an unlovely truth that any one of us can become a victim of a stalker, and the crime is much more widespread than you might think. An estimated 6 to 7.5 MILLION people are stalked each year in the U.S. and my guess is that due to the nature of the crime it's likely very underreported, so those numbers are probably quite a bit higher. Prosecutor Rhonda B. Saunders has prosecuted criminals who stalked celebrities, as well as people like you and me, who, for reasons only known to the stalker, chose them as the object of their evil intentions. Her book, “Whisper of Fear: The True Story of the Prosecutor Who Stalks the Stalkers,” shares stories of how she developed the legal weapons to fight stalking. She even gives her thoughts on what's going on in the minds of stalkers, and in my favorite section, she gives lots of resources on how you can protect yourself and those you love against these people who invade their lives. Jaimie Beebe moved from small town Midwest USA to Hollywood to manage a band. She quickly learned she didn't like music management, and became a producer on a movie set, without having been on a set before. Working twenty hour days along with lots of on the job training, she succeeded! Today she is a successful Casting Director and Podcaster.
