David and Drew share insights into Dr. Provan's PhD research journey, exploring the scarce guidance and fragmented views within academic research on safety practices. They discuss the challenges of painting a clear picture of the day-to-day responsibilities of safety professionals and how this prompted an in-depth investigation into the profession. As we peel back the layers of existing literature, we touch on the difficulty and complexity of condensing a vast array of theories and studies into a cohesive academic narrative. The varied titles and the global patchwork of research that span numerous fields are explored, and although David's search through databases and beyond revealed a trove of about 100 relevant articles, more insights may remain hidden. The discussion culminates with a look at the strategies employed by safety professionals to wield influence, foster trust, and align safety objectives with organizational goals. David's firsthand experiences and academic findings paint a vivid picture of the complex identity and influence that safety professionals must navigate in their pivotal roles. The Paper's AbstractSafety professionals have been working within organizations since the early 1900s. During the past 25 years, societal pressure and political intervention concerning the management of safety risks in organizations has driven dramatic change in safety professional practice. What are the factors that influence the role of safety professionals? This paper reviews more than 100 publications. Thematic analysis identified 25 factors in three categories: institutional, relational, and individual. The review highlights a dearth of empirical research into the practice and role of safety professionals, which may result in some ineffectiveness. Practical implications and an empirical research agenda regarding safety professional practice are proposed.Discussion Points:Safety professionals - are they a “necessary evil”?The role and perception of safety professionals, scarcity and fragmentation of literature, and challenges in condensing research. Safety positions have many varying titles globally.Institutional, organizational, and individual factors, regulatory environments, and professional associations Safety professionals face challenges when reporting to line managers, limiting their ability to challenge leadership and prioritize protection over workers.Balancing safety independence and bureaucracyA construction industry study - testing bureaucracyAlliance vs. Influence - Safety professionals act as the conscience of the organization, using constructive challenge and alliances to advocate for safety and align goals with broader objectives.Influence and trust in safety management - relational legitimacy, influence tactics, and symbolic enablers to promote best practices and trust within organizations.Practical takeaways from the paperThe answer to our episode's question is, “This is still an area of safety science that is a prime candidate for more PhD and postdoc research.” Quotes:“I went into this going, what has been published on the safety profession? And to do that, went to a couple of the key databases and used very deliberate keyword searches…” - David“That was probably one of the first challenges- is that this role gets called so many different things in one country, let alone globally.” - David“The included pieces were all in peer-reviewed publications, but there's a range of quality to those publications.”- David“This connection between the bureaucratic activities of safety professionals and the value that the people who are exposed to the risk see in having a safety team was one of the most stark research findings in the literature.” - David“Don't learn how to do your job from a TED Talk regardless of how inspirational a new view that talk is.” - DrewResources:The Paper: Bureaucracy, Influence, and BeliefsThe Safety of Work PodcastThe Safety of Work on LinkedInFeedback@safetyofwork

Disclaimer - Profanity used throughout this video The survey results are in...... Thanks to everyone that completed our "Safety Professional - are you ok?" survey. The results were thought provoking, and in light of Blue Monday just passed (15th Jan) we share some of our thoughts here. We discuss the state of mental health surrounding the safety profession, how our sleep is affected, the challenges that exist relative to workload, loneliness and isolation, uncertainty, and prioritising our own ambitions. We give our thought on the notion that "good is expected", as well as the importance and power of networks, communities and peer to peer support, along with challenges between individual occupational groups and industry wide sharing. We'd also love you hear your thoughts - do you think it would be valuable to know more about actual issues and events as and when they're happening to trigger discussions on H&S topics, and how the consultant network can come together on this for the greater good of the profession?

Nick hopes to contribute to companies' established safety culture as a safety specialist, starting at Crystal Finishing Systems after graduation. He feels that safety is all about keeping people safe, building a safety culture, and protecting companies from fines. Nick emphasizes that the best way for people to learn and understand safety protocols is through hands-on experience, in addition to learning through reading books or attending lectures. He highlights the importance of safety culture in the safety programs of companies, emphasizing open communication and trust with employees. Nick also shares the significance of safety culture in a company's safety program or process. He suggests that building a culture of safety requires not only commitment from the safety department but also upper management's trust and support. Barb and Ted agree that forming a culture that values safety and open communication can positively impact the entire organization's culture. They discuss the importance of PPE safety and addressing employee pushback to safety protocols or concerns. Barb, Ted, and Nick offer some tips for younger individuals pursuing a career in safety. Nick recommends staying open-minded, looking for opportunities to grow and learn, and being able to communicate effectively through public speaking and involvement in safety committees and boards. In this episode of Ted Speaks, Ted and Barb, talk with Carly Baez, a safety manager and a member of the American Society of Safety Professionals. The discussion revolves around the issue of distracted driving, which is a major safety concern in the construction industry and beyond. Carly shares her experience in educating the public about distracted driving and discussed strategies for reducing distractions while driving. Carly also highlights the importance of combining work safety with public safety, and how laws alone are not enough to create a safer environment without proper training and education. Behavior is often rooted in past experience and Carly shares her experience in creating a community challenge that addresses the behavior of distracted driving, rather than simply telling people to stop texting and driving. The challenge requires participants to hold their phones in their hands, face up, with the ringer and volume on, and ignore any calls or messages for 30 minutes. The goal is for people to experience and understand their own response style and relationship with their phones, which is crucial to changing the behavior behind distracted driving. Ted, Barb and Carly also share personal anecdotes about their own experiences with distractions while driving and the importance of this approach, as well as the difficulty of mentally shutting off the automatic response to phone notifications. This episode provides valuable insights into how to address distracted driving and emphasizes the importance of creating awareness about distracted driving and promoting safe driving habits to keep employees and families safe.References: Safety FMTotal Health & Safety SolutionsCarly Baez

In this episode, Mary Conquest speaks with coach, speaker and podcast host Andrew Barrett, the founder of Safety On Tap, a consultancy specializing in the development and growth of Health and Safety leaders.Andrew has created an evolving model of marketing for Health and Safety, and in this fascinating interview, he explains how this model works and what EHS professionals can learn from marketing to improve their effectiveness. He takes key marketing concepts - such as customers, products, services, matching needs, ensuring appropriate fit, transactions, feedback, consultation and engagement - and applies them to workplace safety.Andrew explores who safety professionals' customers are and highlights the potential conflict between the needs of frontline workers and leadership. Regardless of everything that HSE practitioners are doing, a great starting point to develop a marketing approach to safety is asking: who are you trying to help, and what problems do they have?Getting feedback and consulting with internal customers is a great way to co-create safety initiatives that end-users will want to adopt - rather than have to adopt. Andrew shares great practical advice on the best ways of achieving these goals and ensuring that safety management products and services are a good fit.Andrew highlights the importance of validating the adoption and effectiveness of safety programs and gives top tips on how to do this efficiently. He also challenges HSE professionals to give more consideration to ongoing service and support post-implementation.A deeper understanding and engagement with humans and relationships underpin the entire model.
