Stephen EvansReason depends on the faith that our cognitive senses—eyes and ears, our minds and memories—are not tricking us. Yet there is no noncircular way to establish that. We cannot test their reliability without using and therefore assuming their reliability. To explain what Wittgenstien means, consider the movie The Matrix. Can you prove that you aren't actually in a vat somewhere with plugs coming out of the back of your head feeding you an alternate reality? We cannot, then, prove these fundamental premises for the operation of reasoning. We take them on faith…To state that there is no God or that there is a God, then, necessarily entails faith. And so the declaration that science is the only arbiter of truth is not itself a scientific finding. It is a belief.Timothy KellerFaith is not opposed to ThinkingChristianity birthed universities, preserved classical learning, and encouraged scientific inquiryNow faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.Hebrews 11:1-3To the writer to the Hebrews faith is a hope that is absolutely certain that what it believes is true, and that what it expects will come. It is not the hope which looks forward with wistful longing; it is the hope which looks forward with utter certainty. It is not the hope which takes refuge in a perhaps; it is the hope which is founded on a conviction.Barclay17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, 18 of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 19 He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.Hebrews 11:17-19Logizomai [considered]: to reckon, count, compute, calculate, count over. (Where the word “LOGIC” comes from.)Faith is not opposed to EvidenceAnd the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered them,[a] “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.' 3 And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed.Matthew 16:1-4The evidence is there, examinable and understandable for those who are open to it and who welcome it. One may objectively prove the Bible is the most unique book ever published and has impacted society more than any other book. But only faith can prove that the Bible is the Word of God. Therefore, this is a belief beyond reason but not in contradiction to reason or against reason.David GuzikDoubt your doubtsConsider the object of your faithEven in times when it seems God expects a faith that contradicts reason, closer examination reveals He does not. For example, it might seem contrary to reason for God to expect Abraham to believe that Sarah's dead womb could bring forth a child. But it is not unreasonable to believe that the God who created life and the womb could do this, and that He would do it according to His promise.David GuzikFuel your faith with God's Word14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?[c] And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.Romans 10:14-176 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and th...

Becoming a believer; follower of Jesus Christ, isn't just about transformation but also transition. We no longer perceive and practice life from a position where we're in control of all we have. Instead, it's life under new management, governed by God's presence & influence. Because God created us where living under His management is the ONLY way to stay on top; get the most of everything in our lives.Focus Scriptures:Psalm 31:14-15Ephesians 5:1; 5:14-17How to give God my time:1. Mark 5:21-43 Mark 5:21–43 (Listen)Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. 22 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” 24 And he went with him.And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. 25 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” 29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?'” 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”35 While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler's house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” 36 But overhearing1 what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37 And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. 38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus2 saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41 Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. 43 And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.Footnotes[1] 5:36 Or ignoring; some manuscripts hearing [2] 5:38 Greek he(ESV)

Mark 5:1-20 Mark 5:1–20 (Listen) Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon 5:1 They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.1 2 And when Jesus2 had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. 3 He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. 7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” 8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” 10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, 12 and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” 13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea. 14 The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed3 man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. 17 And they began to beg Jesus4 to depart from their region. 18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled. We're wrapping up our Bible Highlight Reel series today, as we look at the book of Isaiah and specifically, at chapters 52 and 53. In this chapter, as we are reminded of Israel's exile, that God has not abandoned them. In the midst of this, Isaiah introduces a new character to the story via prophecy: the promise of a suffering servant. In this episode, Nicole and Rachel discuss: 1. How we know that this prophecy is about Jesus2. Why this passage can be hard for us to read and really think through3. Why this is a central passage for entering into Advent (which means "waiting") Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.

If only you knew the Gift of God!• “Living water”?• Satisfaction?• Cleansing?• Eternal life?• The Holy Spirit?• True, spiritual worship?1. What Jesus gives to us: Not just benefits, but a bridegroomThe Gift: Christ himself, though his Spirit, with every blessing in his hands• Christ alone possesses the Spirit “without measure”, and every gift of the Father is placed in his hands (3:34-35)• God himself is “living water” his people need (Jer 2:13)• Drink from Christ, receive the living water of his Spirit (7:37, 39)So What: No a ‘second blessing', but more of Jesus2. Wise Words For A Hurting Church: Our Future BodiesPastor Jay Childs | 1 Corinthians 151. The Resurrection of Jesus2. The Resurrection of the Dead3. The Resurrection of Our Bodies
Today's four-letter word is FULL. We are called to be FULL of the Holy Spirit but how can we be full of something we don't understand? In the book “Forgotten God” Francis Chan argues that most Christians never think about the Holy Spirit. What are your thoughts about his statement? Let's look at this Forgotten part of God- Who is the Holy Spirit?Chan looks at 7 Characteristics of the Holy Spirit: 1. The Holy Spirit is a person- Matthew 28:19- He has a name and works alongside God and Jesus2. The Holy Spirit is God- Acts 5:3-4 The Spirit and God are interchangeable. So when we forget about the Holy Spirit, we forget about God. 3. The Holy Spirit is eternal and holy John 14:16; Romans 1:4 - Our bodies are temples for the Holy Spirit4. The Holy Spirit has His own mind and prays for us Romans 8:27 - Even when we don't know how to pray the Holy Spirit prays for us. a. Have you ever not been able to pray? 5. The Holy Spirit has emotions: Ephesians 4:30 - Our sin causes Him pain.6. The Holy Spirit has His own desires and will- 1 Corinthians 12:11 - He is the one who chooses the gifts that we need to accomplish His plans. 7. The Holy Spirit is Omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient - We should be in awe of Him and worship Him That's all great, but how do we know we are promised the Holy Spirit?Acts 1:8: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”Acts 4:31: After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.Romans 8:11: And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.Scripture says we need to be FILLED with the Holy Spirit (not partly, not somewhat, etc.) but completely FULL. Galatians 5:16-23: So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[a] you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. What keeps you from being full? What does the Holy Spirit want from you right now? How can you cooperate with Him in His work?

Episode Notes: in this episode we look at how God shines a light to show the way for our moral behavior. When we follow this light and keep ourselves “unstained by the world”, our light shines out for all to see.TAKEAWAYS:1. Even though we are all of a fallen nature, and will always fall short. Our strength comes from striving for the example of Jesus2. To build our own character further, it's best to quiet ourselves and focus on listening to God and letting the hearing influence our actions.3. The grace in the situation is that no matter how many times we fail, God will always give us another chance.RESOURCES:Luke 8:16Deuteronomy 4Mark 9:7
